Yeah, it reminds me of Coraline. The grandma treats him very well and gives Gary everything SpongeBob couldn't (like the car driving), but It's not who she seems to be and has a dark secret..
14:56, 15:44 That granny actually ate her pets by overfeeding them until they died. That's why she was feeding Gary so she can eat him. She's so dark and creepy 👵👵👵🐌🐌🐌😱😱😱
This is one my favorite SpongeBob episodes in general. It’s sad and heartwarming by the end. It has one of the best song. This is the first time that a SpongeBob special felt like a actually special and not extended with patchy segments, which there’s nothing wrong but it’s better without patchy.
There were two different theories about the grandma and what she did to previous snails. 1st, she was feeding them fat to eat them later, 2nd, she was overfeeding them until they all died.
@@kristijanEX This was largely due to censorship. According to technical writer Vincent Waller, the tray of cookies she was swinging at Gary was originally supposed to be an axe. Even as it is, her throwing the cookies like ninja stars suggests malice more than obliviousness/senility to me.
@kristijanEX the way she’s throwing the cookies at him as if they were weapons and the tone of her voice as she chases Gary let’s us know her intentions were dark and disturbing
@@Heroshii15I bet there’s some senility there because there’s absolutely no way she wouldn’t notice the snail Gary pushed out wasn’t him. Unless she just moved on to that snail as her next victim and called it a day.
This special never gets old. So cinematic, emotional, epic yet simple and overall a masterpiece. That grandma is still scary, DoodleBob, Strangler and Dennis might be tougher and stronger, but that old lady is genuinely creepy.
We're gonna ignore that he did, Tea at the treedome, Sleepy time, suds, mermaid man barnacle boy, rock bottom, culture shock, your shoes untied, wormy, grandmas kisses, Christmas who before hand, probably more that i forgot too. but nah, he improved after dumped@@Loner098
I think the BEST part of this whole episode is actually what somebody else mentioned: Notice how in every flyer, billboard, ad that Spongebob makes it's not a typical lost pet thing. It's not like, 'If you find my snail, call this number.' It's literally, 'Gary, I'm sorry. I love you, but want you to make the choice to come back.' 💔
But it does. While Season 4 has gems, the humor leaves a lot to be desired compared to seasons 2 and 3. I will say, Dunces and Dragons is honestly in my top 10 SpongeBob episodes and if memory serves, it’s a season 4 special, but I still believe the decline is somewhat noticeable this season. The plot of a lot of episodes just feel a bit too forced and lack the creativity and charm of its previous seasons.
This one is a bit of a sad episode, but let's not forget the funny scenes in this one with Gary throwing himself on SpongeBob's face toward the beginning and Squidward screaming his head off when SpongeBob and Patrick barge into his bathroom unexpectedly 🤣🤣😂😂
Compared to specials that came after, this one felt a lot more cinematic. The characters are drawn different and there’s a lot of detailed close up shots. I know this isn’t made by the same team before the movie but it’s different, but still good. And of course the song is the one of the best things to come out of this.
i always cry watching this episode. i always think about my grandma. who would watch SpongeBob with me my whole life, until she passed when i was 11. she always imagined me as SpongeBob and her as Patrick. ❤
Oh I thought this episode was later down the road... the Gary come home song was depressing as it was infectious, this why you take of your pets. BTW lemme know if this episode reminded you of that spongebob computer game, on the Nickelodeon website where you find Gary? (If you were there for that era).
Many people don't seem to realize that this episode is not even sad, but also very dark. Especially the scene when the snails in the picture tell Gary to run, it just shivers down my spine. Thank God I didn't understand what they said when I was a kid. Otherwise that scene would have been even more traumatizing :D
Does anyone else remember that Nick had a contest to decide what the message in the sky would be when this first came out? I always thought that someone legit wrote and submitted that to Nick and then got on one knee and proposed to this “Lisa person”. Then thought that SpongeBob was a weird place to propose.
Well, if Gary stayed with SpongeBob he would have starved. As sad as it is, SpongeBob is not capable of caring for a pet if one new obsession is enough for him to completely ignore Gary.
I forgot how emotional this episode was. Gary Come Home actually got me teary-eyed a little bit.

Dumped was done right. It wasn’t meant to be deeply emotional, it was meant to be hilarious with the undertones of a soap opera 😂

There were two different theories about the grandma and what she did to previous snails. 1st, she was feeding them fat to eat them later, 2nd, she was overfeeding them until they all died.
