The harbour developed when the Short Sea Route to Portpatrick was established in 1662 and was active for 200 years but it declined as vessels grew and better port were developed. In the 1820s, steam-driven paddle vessels were introduced and the Post Office financed improvements to the harbour facilities.
The lighthouse was built on the harbour’s breakwater in the 1830s with a fixed light.. i.e. a non-flashing light showing red mainly to seaward and white over the harbour and towards Belfast Lough. It’s constructed from limestone and it was painted white with a black plinth in the late 1860s. A fire damaged the light and lantern in 1900 and it was converted to an unwatched electric light in 1934 (Ireland’s first to be converted to electric).
The RNLI station was inaugurated in 1910 and it’s current lifeboat, 14-21, is a Trent class lifeboat with a maximum speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles. It also has a small XP boat to access shallow and inaccessible areas.

Donaghadee is a small but attractive town in County Down, Northern Ireland, on the Ards Peninsula about 18 miles (29 km) from Belfast. The harbour is relative ‘new’ but the town is much older with a Anglo-Normans motte-and-bailey castle built over an earlier ring fort. Donaghadee is well worth a visit 👍.
