  • 18 months ago, the transom on our J16 Carolina Skiff cracked and our boat has been dry ever since. In November of 2023, we finished the entire transom rebuild along with redoing our rear deck in order to support a poling platform. After a long and frustrating journey, the skiff if water ready and we are fishing on it several times a week! In this video we will walk you through the process of creating a truly amazing rear deck to support our new poling platform. This DIY video will show you some of the things I learned along the way as this was the first time I have ever done a project of this magnitude. We hope that you can gain some ideas, wisdom or insight if you are going to rebuild your small boat or skiff.

Yes, doing glass work in heat and sun is a no-no. But the main issue on the first side was that you doused the glass and THEN tried to put it in place. You learned your lesson on the back side by placing the piece of glass over a the surface that had wet resin on it and then put resin over it.

In fact, glassing on a hot day isn’t so bad if you use a slow setting epoxy resin.

@@watchyourlip3209 you make youtube videos brother, right here on youtube are countless videos about fiberglassing, your content is interesting enough but your glass work is boo 😢 don’t mind me though, my comment was to be taken as funny criticism, my apology if i touched a nerve 👋

@@ratballs007 haha. No worries. I was just curious. I’d much rather make fishing vids but stuff like this earns evergreen $. I included all of the “warts” of the project for transparency, authenticity and showing reality for guys like me that dream of doing a project like this but have never done anything like this before. I had a lot of advice from guys that know what’s up but wanted to get my “hands dirty” and learn while documenting what we did.
It’s solid as a rock now. I learned a lot - but most of all, that I don’t want to do fiberglass work professionally!!!
Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment

What is this foam board for deck material

    • @watchyourlip3209

its a marine foam that they sell at marine fabricator locations. There are different thicknesses for different types of projects. I do not recall specifically what it is called.
