The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is a Turbo-Electric Sledgehammer in a Cutthroat SUV Segment
Вставка

- The 2022 #HyundaiTucson gets some bold new changes for the all-new fourth generation. @hyundai heard complaints from previous owners and the result is a #TucsonHybrid and #TucsonPHEV that looks to beat its main rivals from Toyota and Honda. The new #Tucson is anything but forgettable and it should do extremely well at chipping away sales from its Japanese rivals.

4:12 Your camera man needs a raise. He did a great job showcasing exactly what you were talking about, you guys are a GREAT TEAM!!!
I’m not even remotely looking at this segment for a new car, but this thing is VERY nice! If I needed a commuter, this is at the top. I love Hyundai’s and Kia’s safety suite with the side view cameras, man. That interior! The lux, comfort and convenience features! Hyundai only has to overcome the brand loyalty stubbornness of Toyota and Honda owners to become a winner in the segment.
this may be an unpopular opinion, but i am actually glad hyundai didn't do the blue badging for the hybrid. its nice to be able to reap the benefits of a hybrid without getting the ugly styling
H...Hyundai.
Lack of capital letters at the start of your sentences is highly unpopular too!
Indeed! Having blue whatever just to show hybrid option looks ugly
Yeah, I don’t mind the Tucson being low key about the Hybridness. I don’t need to gloat.
But the font for the hybrid badge is a bigger eyesore than the blue outline though lol
Yeah they never should've copied Toyota in the first place. Glad they grew out of that phase.
Is impressive how much the Tucson has grown since it's debut.
Most people are overweight/obese, they cant fit into human sized vehicles.
@@mynock250 As someone who is short and yet weighs over 600 pounds, I concur. I've grown sideways over time unfortunately.
Big=impressive in their simple customers' minds so they keep making it bigger. Because it sells cars.
It's really not, all cars have gotten much larger
I agree. I just saw a video on the new Honda Civic and it looks bigger than previous Honda Accords 😳
This Tucson is legit in and out. The design stands out among all segments of suv out in the market today. Home run Hyundai!
Capacitive buttons for audio and hvac are stupid. Somebody at Hyundai needs to get a clue.
@@xuimod cry me a River.
Crazy to see this is how the Tucson is now it’s a really nice car
The silhouette at 3:47 is actually really cool!
Hybrid is definitely the way to go. I have seen a lot of reviewers said this. I hope it doesn’t get overpriced when people start buying them.
In Arizona the queue for the Rav4 Hybrid is getting absurd. I want a Rav4 XLE Hybrid Premium... the dealer tells me there are 12-15 people ahead of me in the queue. Also the Rav4 Prime is simply unavailable in Arizona and will remain so throughout 2021. If Hyundai can meet demand they will make out like bandits with their Hybrid.
@@davidgapp1457 but the queue should tell you something. The Hyundai is shite. Toyota is the best in the business when it comes to hybrids
@@sammyjammy6647 I've driven the Rav4 Hybrid and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid. While I have reservations about the wisdom of the turbo, the Tucson Hybrid has the Rav4 beat in almost every area. Handling, brakes and power are all clearly superior in the Hyundai. Styling is personal, but to my eye the Tucson is a much better looking vehicle. As I'm an engineer and restore vintage cars as a hobby, I took a really good look at both vehicles, much to the consternation of the respective dealers! I see absolutely nothing wrong with the construction and overall design of either vehicle, although the electrical system on the Rav4 is considerably more complex. I do prefer the integrated electric drive-train / eCVT planetary gear transmission on the Rav4, but the Hyundai solution looks to be a capable solution. Finally, the Hyundai does not rely on electric motors for the rear axle - so anyone wanting a truly off-road capable vehicle might want to look at the Hyundai. The other big drawback on the Tucson is the lack of a spare tire - the Rav4 Hybrid can carry a full size spare. To me it's ridiculous to manufacture an off-road and back-country capable vehicle WITHOUT a spare. What were they thinking?
Your 'the Hyundai is shite' requires an explanation. Certainly I could see nothing to substantiate your view. If anything the Rav4 is the more 'plastic' of the two vehicles. 90% of the trim is plastic; held on by a combination of press-studs and a few screws. The rear 'bumper' (the metal behind the plastic, is the flimsiest I've ever seen. Fortunately I took mine off and replaced it with an OEM tow hitch which has a way stronger cross-beam and attaches by 8 bolts to the subframe - could make the difference between a write-off and a relatively affordable repair in cases of mild shunts. The Hyundai has a stronger looking rear frame arrangement which I suspect would fare better in any kind of rear collision.
As for 'queue' the Rav4 has momentum. Until the Hyundai it really had no challengers - the CR-V is a good vehicle and would appeal to Honda loyalists, however it is eclipsed in most areas by the Rav4. I expect the Tucson Hybrid and the Tucson PHEV are going to steal Toyota's thunder and maybe force a redesign of the ridiculous (and poor aerodynamic) exterior. The interior is also let down by a low resolution (and generally far too small) screen, a power seat that in most trims doesn't have seat memory and the weakest interior lighting of any car I've seen in the past 10 years - especially the cargo bay.
In the end I DID buy a Rav4 Prime as I could no longer wait for the Tucson PHEV. Yes, it's good, but the buying experience was a nightmare and the SE is disappointingly equipped, even will all available packages. Still no power passenger seat or seat memory or 6.6kW charger or 1500W inverter. I consider the Prime XSE but I didn't want the panoramic roof and to get the features I wanted... I would've been forced to take the panoramic roof! Very poor packaging of fundamentally disparate features! Do I like the Rav4 Prime? Yes. It's basically a hybrid on steroids and my recommendation to ANY Rav4 buyer is to get this version. Worth the hassle of shipping the car across country! However when the Tucson PHEV becomes available I expect demand for the Prime will pale rather quickly as Hyundai are bringing their PHEV to ALL States, not just the 12 or so who followed California with zero emission regulations.
@@davidgapp1457 without a doubt this is one of the most thoughtful replies I’ve ever seen from a UA-cam commentor. I’m not sold on the Hyundai brand and I would need to be more familiar and confident with their track record of reliability. I don’t wanna put my money into something that’s new and questionable, especially the Tucson which has a turbo. Toyotas reputation for reliability is legendary AND the other huge factor for me was the resale value. After 5 years the depreciation is maybe 39%? Finally as you said before, looks are subjective, and the rav4 5th gen looks ruggedly handsome especially from the front. Oh yeah the one I made a deal on is being shipped from Japan, an XLE hybrid with all the packages in Lunar Rock for 31k OTD
I discovered the Tucson for myself in December 2020 and got mine mid January 2021. Full spec in black.

My best friend just got one- she (we) love it... it is very spacious. It's bigger than a typical compact suv but smaller than a large one. The headlight design turns alot of heads. You can customize the dash, the sound system is of great quality. I personally love the design of the vents. Being able to just open the lift gate without waving under a sensor is a great feature (especially if your hands are full) It has wireless Apple play & Android auto. Different drive modes to include snow (which will come in handy living in PA).. Gets great gas milage!!!
Cons we agreed on was- Turn signals are now low on the rear bumper (and side mirrors but no arrow just blinking led lights that barely wrap around) Heated steering wheel is not included in the premium package neither is passenger power seats (has the manual pull lever) My personal con is it not having a V6... (however it is light enough for it to drive well as 4 cylinder) Oh and since its so new- weathertech does not have custom mats for it yet....
Overall- its an awesome vehicle and our gripes are what we call "first world problems" I am seriously considering to trade in my vehicle for one... (Hyundai also has the best warranty)
I think out of all the manufacturers hyundai seems to be making the biggest splash....changing all their designs and stuff. giving ppl a funky pickup truck...suvs, but also give ppl N versions of the elantra and veloster with automatic options...they are doing things right
No. Automatic in a sporty car = bad.
I don't care how good it may, or how quick it can shift. I'll never be a situation on the road where that 1000th of a second shift time will make a difference.
It takes away from the drive.
I just hope they (Hyundai, Kia and Genesis) can continue to shake off the bad image that sometimes persists for them, because from what I've seen from them in the past 3-5 years has been very impressive!!
@@UltimaRSfan boohoo the future is now. A lot of the car reviewers have said they prefer the DCT on the Veloster over the manual.
It’s easier for a company that was used to making horrific quality cars inside and out, to make themselves look good among the competition, by focusing more on their quality. To the consumer, it looks like a MASSIVE change, because they weren’t used to a Hyundai being “good quality”.
To companies like the Europeans, they’ve been making superb quality cars, especially interior wise, for decades, so they don’t really stand out as much. They’ve always been nice...

Amazing what Hyundai/kia have become in just 10 short years. Bravo!
In the next 10 years, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis/Ioniq will be among the class leaders in EVs...

Hyundai hybrid system is nothing like Toyota or Honda.
they wont last 50,000 miles. DO NOT BUY THEM
@@gree9963 how would you know? Have you owned one?
@@gree9963 I had a Kia hybrid that operated flawlessly (for 100,000 miles until I sold it) which is basically the same system. All the reviewers I've watched so far are saying this system is better than the RAV4. It operates seamlessly as opposed to the RAV4 feeling clunky. After 25 years of experience making hybrids, Toyota should be ashamed of themselves.
I love my SEL 2.5 w/ premium pkg!! The intense blue looks amazing! I wish the hybrid was out when I got mine almost a month ago. The 2.5 is adequate for everyday driving but coming from a 14' Kia Optima SX Turbo makes it feel slow. Overall I agree that this is a fine compact with a premium feel in terms of tech, looks, and ride quality. And Sofyan isn't lying about the rear legroom. I'm 6'3 and I can sit behind myself without my knees pressed against the seat. One friend said she felt like she was flying first class with the room combined with a steep long recline angle. Hyundai has a winner as long as these engines don't fail.
Congrats Brian!

@@stevenweiss2148 I think I'm good with it now after breaking it in. It seems to be more responsive. How is your gas mileage with the SEL pkg?
“the gas engine models don’t get the hybrid badge” - thanks Sofyan
😂 I’m sure we’d all be surprised at the insanely dumb questions they get about those types of things haha
I didn't realise Hyundai made a gas version of this car. My understanding is either diesel or petrol.
@@johnvandeven2188 petrol = "gas" in the US (short for gasoline, not an actual gas lol confusing)

Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have become my favorite car manufacturer.... coming from a Ford F-150 truck guy. I love what Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are doing overall but personally I love the design of their vehicles. With the exception of the Ram, I think Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have the best interior as well. Can’t wait to see what they do in the future with hybrid/EV space.
I literally picked up my 2022 Tuscon hybrid today! So excited to learn all its features! It was a really good deal and I love the interior design.
What do you consider a really good deal?

They’re finally size-competitive with the RAV4 and CRV. They’re really gunning for segment leaders now
I recently purchased a 2023 Tucson Hybrid on 12/3/22. I loved the car when I test drove it and watched hours of reviews from UA-cam. One thing that every single review failed to mention, is the issue Hyundai has with their panoramic sunroofs, as well as the small piece of glass inbetween the sunroof and the front windshield. There have been class action lawsuits filed against Hyundai because apparently these pieces of glass like to spontaneously burst. This happened to my 2023 Tucson after just ONE WEEK of driving. Walked out to my car ready to head to work, and noticed this giant crack in the glass, expanding from one end all the way to the other end. Car is back at the dealership right now, allegedly getting fixed at no cost to me. But some of the personal stories I've read online make me hesitant to believe that Hyundai is actually going to cover it. I'll come back with more details once I get an update. But just wanted other buyers to be aware of this common issue. I am not very pleased.
Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is absolutely killing it in recent years. They deserve all the accolades they're receiving, especially since they offer the best warranty in the business. PHEV is a vehicle segment that I am personally looking to purchase in the next couple years, so I am very excited to see how the plug-in version of the Tucson performs. Although they should have done better with the electric range, 32 miles trails the Rav4 Prime's range by 10 miles, which is an unforced error on their part. However, if the price is significantly lower on the Tucson PHEV, I might be able to overlook the lacking range.
My 1988 Hyundai Excel did not even come with a RADIO!
Reason is stated for the loss of the ten MP. The 6 speed trans, not being the 8 speed STV.

You are so right..... Rav4 hybrid is the way to go for sure
Only one issue. the touch sensitive buttons instead of real buttons/knobs. What the heck were they thinking! The rest is great!
The new Tuscon has voice recognition that can control temperature and volume. And you have controls on the steering wheel. Take advantage of technology!
@@jraheemjefcoat429 Of course you can but that is not my preferred method. Nor most people I believe.

We are a big Hyundai family with nine of their cars and was ready to buy the 2022 Tucson until we saw the placement of the rear turn signals. Major safety issue just waiting to get rear ended. We'll wait for the safety upgrade thanks.
I like the temporary side camera on dash when turning blinker on. Very underrated.
Looks really nice, I love my Palisade, Hyundai and Kia are knocking it out of the park lately. I'm really interested in the plug in version. I seriously doubt my next car will use gasoline.
If you get a plug-in hybrid, you will still be using gasoline mate 🤔
Currently deciding between this and the RAV4. You certainly get a lot more standard on the Tuscon. I personally find the styling a bit too busy. I like the rugged look of the RAV4 better, plus is has that great lunar grey color. It is gonna be a hard decision.
I don't like how kia and hyundai have made their headlights, rear turn signals and reverse lights lower in the bumper
@TDKR
Only the Venza
It’s frustrating. I hated them when I started seeing them on some Land Rovers and Kia Sportages. I find it difficult to anticipate traffic changes from several cars back because the cars ahead of you are blocking the turn signal that is too low to the ground. And when that car gets dirty you can’t see the signals at all because the lights are so low and covered in junk.
@@fabulousprofound Don't tailgate and wash the car?
Yeah they've done it as far back as 2011 Sportage, and before them other manufacturers as early as in the 90s too. I really don't like it, it takes a second longer to notice turn signals when you're expecting to see them in main taillight assembly. Kia/Hyundai now do it on majority of their cars and to me it seems like a bad design.
I agree about the rear turn signals but I think the lo were headlight is how every car should go. Lower headlights are better at lighting the road in foggy situations and don’t blind people that still drive lower vehicles like regular coupes and sedans.
Hey Hyundai! If you're reading this, please put the turn signals back where they belong. It's ridiculous to have them that low in the bumper. In heavy stop-and-go traffic, the person behind you may not realize that you're getting ready to make a right or a left turn.
I'm seriously looking at the Tucson, the Santa Fe, and possibly the Santa Cruz. I really like the interior on the Tucson and the Santa Cruz better than the Santa Fe. If the Santa Cruz's bed was a little longer, I wouldn't be looking at the other two. Also, can't beat that 5000 pound tow capacity.
Looks great in white. My only complaints are the overuse of piano gloss black, the capacitive touch buttons, and lack of a volume knob. The dash looks cool, but it's not as usable as the previous model year.
Watched this on a whim after your Rav4 videos and it is my 1st time to even consider a Hyundai and the 2022 Tuscon Hybrid in Limited trim in white is now very high on my list. Great review and impressive vehicle!
Just got my white/black interior hybrid. Very solids don’t safe car!
Kinda amazed watching so many reviewers possibly miss mentioning Tucson's rear wiper which is beautifully hidden under rear spoiler without blocking driver's rear view when sitting behind the steering wheel but just mention its emblem on the glass. If you understand its designer's intention, it looks pretty slick.
Hyundai always pushing the envelope instead of incremental tiny upgrades like the rest of the competition. Very impressive!
2:34 I know that camera shutters struggle with LEDs, but that motion looks cool. I assume they are just "simply on" in the flesh?
This white looks so premium and classy!…this tucson will give its competitor hard time to compete…its time for this car to shine!…
Not a fan of their new design. Looks really busy. But hats off for being an experimental manufacturer
Yea i agree im not the biggest fan there design language
Screen seems a bit low. I would've preferred Hyundai prioritize function over making the air vents look like one piece.
@@Lucky8s Actually it is normal to be lower. It is adviced by the experts to keep your sub monitors lower than the main one, because if you turn your head, your line of sight naturally goes down a bit. The screen is tilted and is in the same sight as the buttons. This is more ergonomic than a tablet style non tilted screen.
Ok, I admit I’m a bit of a Hyundai/Kia fanboy but they really do make great vehicles. I’ve owned 10 Hyundai/Kia cars and loved them all (I still have 4 of them). Had a 2006 1st Gen Tucson and the wife currently drives a 2011 2nd Gen. This new 4th Gen is beautiful.

Pretty impressive. It will sell well, but I'm not sure how well it'll age.
I'm sure it'll sell well too. But the thing about SUVs these days, most of them do not age well, especially these newer "bolder" designs. The only exception I can think of is Mazda, somehow even seeing and old 3 or CX7 out there it doesn't look that old, but most others do.
@@richardnavratil9661 I find the older CX-5s did not age well in terms of design with their large taillights. I agree that Mazda's designs are pretty classy overall, though. I still like the CX-9's design even though they haven't changed much since its release five years ago as a 2016 model.

I am in a deep love for the new Tucson. So edgy and so dynamically styled. LOVE that interior, but the exterior wins it for me.
Hoping to review one here in the coming weeks. Might make a combo review if they get hybrids in soon.
But I do have one thing to say Sofyan, I have a 2016 Tucson, and I'm by no means tiny (I'm 6' 2"), and I have lots of legroom in the back of my Tucson. Granted I sit closer to the wheel than a 6'2" guy would. If I pull my seat as far back as it can, I somehow still manage to fit. Not much wiggle room, nor do my knees go into the back of the seat, but I still fit just fine.
That leg room is almost as crazy as the new Forester, I can literally put a backpack in front of my legs in the back of my 2020 Forester
Legroom is close. I wonder how the front legroom is compared 2 eachother but this definitely is the opposite of the forrester. Very stylistic and fresh compared 2 the forester
I just bought one. It's very nice
I would wait just a little bit before running out and buying this. The all new Sportage, the Kia cousin, is going to debut very soon in Korea. You can at least see it to see if you like it better.
Wise recommendation, John. Rumor has it that the Sportage may lean toward a more "rugged" look. That would match the differences between the Palisade vs Telluride and Sorento vs Santa Fe where the Hyundais, while very similar, project a more budget luxury image and the the KIA's opt for a more rugged look and feel.
There's no question that the Tucson is a huge improvement over the last generation and a potential winner for Hyundai even with the RAV4 and CR-V gobbling up huge portions of the market in the US. For me, though, Hyundai's entire external design language is flawed with creases and bulges seemingly added everywhere on top of a clean design.

In the very expensive Rolls (and almost every other car you’ve reviewed), “I wish Apple Car play could use the whole info screen”, in the new Tucson, “I like that I can split the info screen and only use part of it for Apple Car play”. Well my 2019 rav4 is noisey as hell and also doesn’t come close to the quality and features of this Tucson. Wow am I impressed!! Great review
I don't get excited about many ICE vehicles these days but this seems worth checking out, especially if you are in a state where a hybrid actually makes more sense environmentally than an EV due to power plant sourcing (e.g. West Virginia using lots of coal).
"if you hit something you probably shouldn't be driving" that is fantastic!!! LOVE IT! So true to!
Your reviews get better and better.🕺🏾🥳 Mann I almost bought a 2021 but after this 😬😬😬😬 I might have to wait.
For only a $1100 premium, the Hybrid model sounds like a bargain.
I have had my Hyundai Tucson for almost a week and I love it! It has everything! I would highly recommend it!
I pick up a 2022 SEL Hybrid tomorrow. Very excited. I wanted a Limited but vehicle prices still now just don't make it worth it when you get 90% of the tech in the SEL for much less.
I wish adaptive cruise was offered on every vehicle , would make for more relaxed driving, constant reset is a pest.
Another advantage to the hybrid model, that was not mentioned, is fuel range between gas fill ups. Both the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine and the 1.6 turbo/electric have the same tiny 13.7 gallon gas tank. The 2.5 gets about 397 miles to the tank. But the Turbo/electric, with the same tank capacity, gets about 506 miles before fill up. 109 more miles. With that range I could drive from the Ohio East border, after a fill up, to Port Jervis on the Pennsylvania East border and New Jersey and still have enough gas left over to fill up there.
A lot of comments are casting suspicion on the reliability of the small-displacement turbo. But this kind of engine has become the norm for this segment, including from brands like GM, Honda, Ford, and Nissan. If anything, it is less strained in the Tucson because it's helped by the electric drive. This 1.6T is also in the K5 and the Sonata, yet no one finds it a problem in those cars.
The plug in hybrid is going to be a hit with the federal all credit and available state credits. It’s going to be perfect for a majority of peoples commute.
I appreciate Hyundai taking risks and making bold moves (in terms of design), but this look is a no for me. In my opinion it is the side panels that through me off. Although the Santa cruz wears this look better.
Same im not a fan of how it looks and i think it won't age well
Very detailed review as usual from you. Thanks for sharing.
Phenomenal review. My favorite auto review channel by far. Happy 4 year subscriber here....
Always liked the Tuscon but now I'm in love with this car I need one
I have a Subaru BRZ and about to get a Lotus....pure sports cars and swore against SUVs....but I might just cave in for something like this hahah this looks amazing.
And I've been driving my friend's 2019 Hyundai Ioniq and I LOVE it. 650+ range on one tank compared to my 200 miles...love what Hyundai is doing
I think this will set the standard in the compact crossover market. Hyundai has a winner here.
