I have nothing but respect for Music Theory; I'm an old lifelong musician, but U can learn SO much ("straight from the gate") by very closely watching & listening (REPEATEDLY) to the intro video, stopping it & copying the shapes, "connecting the dots," relying on your ear, looking for the simple & familiar instead of the complex & puzzling. Learn your theory, but never let all the vocabulary & complexity take time away from the instrument in your hands, carefully watching & listening to the good players laying down what you want to learn. Remember, you have technology that's pretty new. T-Bone Walker didn't have UA-cam, REWIND, etc. & I doubt he could read music, but WOW!

Paul I love your videos man! They have brought me back to the guitar and now I'm learning and practicing more then ever! Got this down in a week. Also using the looping extension from chrome and adjusting the speed of the video makes it perfect to play along with the beginning of the video. I put the loop between 00:00 and 00:25 and that makes a perfect loop. adjusting it from 0,5 gradually to 0,7 and 0,8 and 0,9 and..1! I can finally jam along! Maybe this trick helps some other people as well!

Started this year (Jan 2017) on acoustic and got an electric a couple of months ago but was stuck in a "rythm rut" cause it took me forever to figure out volume, tone and amp settings... Am now "transitioning" my playing time towards a greater balance between the two and this is exactly what the doctor ordered as I focused strictly on rythm for the first 4-5 months. Have a shitload of songs but no licks between chords. Your lesson truly gave me the road map to my focus for the remainder of the year! Thank you so much for this fantastic tutorial, brother.

I think this sounds beautiful. I am a Fingerstyle Solo instrumental Fingerstyle guitarist. Most of the stuff I play I play chords with Notes more like hey Chad Atkins style of playing guitar. Been playing like this for years I fluently read notation and tabs this is a beautiful way playing a guitar I’ve had some people tell me I play a guitar like someone would play a piano. I love the way you play I watch your videos you’re a great guitarist and a great teacher one of the best on UA-cam thanks for your videos I appreciate ate them very much have a great day👍😃🎸🎼🎶👍

I went back to this video yet again and really tried breaking the modes down. Since I'm not the best at memorizing too much stuff, I dumbed it down a little for myself. The minor pentatonic scale is included in the blues scale and the dorian mode, and the major pentatonic scale is included in the mixolydian mode. The blues scale has the added Eb in it, the dorian mode is the "minor feeling" mode (with the flat C) and the mixolydian is the "major feeling" mode (with the C#). With my dumbed down understanding of it :
Over the A7 chords (A C# E G) he uses the blues scale (with the flat C to "clash") and the mixolydian mode (still with the C as passing tones/grace notes), then over the D7 chords he uses the dorian mode because A dorian is the same as D mixolydian (same mode, different key, keeps his jam sounding "consistent" when he changes chords). I was asking myself what E mixolydian would be (he only plays an E7-Eb7-D7 descending line during the E7 bar), E mixolydian is the A major scale, which he didn't mention but the whole song is in the key of A major anyway

  • @Quinton-zu6hy

You do the best job of explaining what you are playing, if I was advanced enough to really understand what Dorian, or Mixilodian really is in context withe what you are playing.

Very nice. There are two major things I can notice which separates Blues from Rock licks, although they both use the Pentatonic scale: 1) Blues tend to start the beginning of phrase bent note on an upbeat pickup, which catches the listener by surprise, and 2) the use of triplets which provides a fluid feel, not being so tied down to the structure of the rhythm. Curious to hear your thoughts...

Hey Paul, i see the quality in your playing, actually it oozes, tone, timing, pieces to learn, you are someone that inspires me, shame you don't live close to me, but then what a nightmare that would be haha. I'm 'mid-life crisis guy' taking up playing guitar, get lessons from a cool dude who is a perfectionist (like you) i like that, what has inspired me is your choice of 12 bar 'stuff' because its very easy (for me) to play the licks, (The inverted A7 is new, but love it!) I've spent all day on this and its a revelation... why? - you explain whats going on: scale, chord inversions, and each lick is easy to digest and simple over the chords. OMG I sound like I'm good!! and YOU did that so THANK YOU VERY much for that :-)
Anyhow this is what I want to say to you :) do MUCH more of this on UTube for free, building a fan base, do some marketing research to see what others like you (check the USA) are doing and fill in the gaps, for me thats accenting the beat and same on 2 and 4 |(I struggle and NO ONE teaches this!!) learning how to practice, using a metronome correctly (play until IT sounds good not you), picking up your rhythm from the drums, how to start improvising, playing blues Major (dom7) over minor penta - why? what is Mixolydian in a blues context? create a course for people to go from beginner to blues improvising and sell that for a £100 - based on what I see on your channel I'd pay... why? because I know you can play and I know you can teach things in a way that I understand plus you want to do it, so you are motivated - right?
Big appologies for a long comment, all this is a good thing being a mid-life crisis kinda guy - I know some stuff :) and my teacher is amazing, like you!
BTW talk about your amp, settings, pedals, guitar, tone and pickups. How can I sound like you on bread and butter kit?
Thanks again Paul, subscribing was VERY easy. My feedback is there to help you. Everyone wants to be cool these days without putting in the work, be honest with us! at best you will inspire a few very successful guitarist |(I hope so anyway) and at worst you will save a few (many) folks from wasting their time. LOL Now that has to be the comment of the century!!

    Hey Paul,
I love your Videos, they are covering exactly what i want to learn on the Guitar, and not just how you play the A-minor Pentatnoic/Blues scale. You show us how to use them!
I also just learned the Johnny B Goode Riff from you. So this is pretty simple if you once got the muscle memory.
Hence my Question: Did you improvised this Blues with the inspiration of Chuck Berry, if so, could you tell us how you improvise, especially how to use the special notes of the Dorian/mixolydian scales? Did you said to yourself right before the Jam:"I will use those notes over the D chord" or did you just felt like it in the heat of the moment? Im new to imporv and i would really appreciate your advice.
You are one of the few guitar teachers here on youtube who know what the students what to learn and you teach it so amazing, i hope you will never stop doing lessons like this.
    Thanks in advanced.
