From what I've heard the similarities are very intentional. Wilkinson was the first Phantom Ramin ever saw perform and served as an inspiration for him. Karimloo modeled his Phantom after Wilkinson's. I will disagree with you though on one thing though. Anger is a significant part of the Phantom's character. He hates society for rejecting him and that has to come through in the performance.

If i read again that crawford was anywhere close to as good as colm as the phantom im gonna puke, crawford is terrible, colm is the phantom end of story

But he is extraordinary sexy in Susan Kay's noble, though he is deformed.
