"People" are watching, they don't want to ruin the scene for the people. That's why after Point of No Return, the soldiers finally held Phantom at gun-point.
I love the way Ramin does this scene. Instead of being Erik, he's Erik *playing* Don Juan, adding an accent and really playing up the fact that this is a play within a play.
So much of what Erik does in the musical is just this. Playing a part. He crafts himself personas and plays them, the protective, watchful angel of music, the dreaded opera ghost, the seductive phantom, the supreme composer. We only see the glimpses of his true nature underneath all those roles he takes on after Christine pulls his mask off for the first time and during the final lair sequence
Apparently that was not an acting choice. Ramin was really trembling we was having such a case of nerves. There is another instance in a different scene earlier in the show where you can see his hands are shaking but I can't think of exactly where at the moment.
I also loved the fact that he bothered to tear up in a lot of the emotional scenes even tho he knew people wouldn't see it, if you look closely at some scenes you can see a tear in his eye
Verdi was slated for his operas being too sexual, but that was around 40 years before this and they still were very popular. I think they'd most likely be more outraged by the discordant semi-atonalism in the previous song.
The fact that Eric was so desperate for love that he would even sing Christine's and Rauls song, just grasping at straws, trying even to copy Raul just so he could have what Raul has...The fact that he would use the song that broke his heart in a desperate attempt to fix it and to get her to love him...That's what makes it heartbreaking...He feels like the real him isn't enough for her...so he tries being someone else she loves...Oof...
The acting in this scene is fucking incredible. Sierra’s seductive play that slowly turns to fear upon realizing who is under the cloak, Ramin’s shaking hands as he reaches for Christine’s, it beautifully captured the phantom’s desperate longing for Christine and his reaction to her touching him like that. Also the way the phantom occasionally slips out of the fake accent during more intense lyrics of the song. Just all the little details are amazing. I honestly wish the movie had adapted the scene more like it was here.
I never knew that or thought of that. I think that’s why it kinda makes sense that the Phantom would go into “All I Ask of You” after “The Point of No Return”.
Indeed the film make zero sense for this sense. She realises who is under the cloak half way through, that's why the phantom is signing with a slight Italian accent
Exceptional acting, yes. Not sure of how "fucking" is a compliment to the performance, though. I wouldn't attach a crude term for a sexual act to a beautiful performance.
I love the way this scene is choreographed to show Christine slowly realising that this isn't Piangi. Because it's safe to assume that the Phantom wouldn't let anyone touch his beloved Angel of Music in the way he does in this song, Piangi was probably given entirely different, more tame stage directions for this scene. So when the Phantom starts this song, touching her in more intimate ways than rehearsed, Christine probably first assumed that this was improvisation, so whilst she was mildly uncomfortable and still worried about the threat of the Phantom looming over the production, she probably didn't have alarm bells ringing yet. But then he takes it too far in his passion and touches her in a way that she is definitely uncomfortable with. Piangi seems dedicated to Carlotta, so this would be out of character for him. So she runs, because even if it is Piangi, he isn't meant to or allowed to do this. She gathers her courage and goes back to him, pretending she didn't just run away during what's meant to be an intimate scene, but she feels the mask under the cloak. When she tries to run the second time it's too late. It's just brilliant how much is expressed without speech.
How does it feel to completely alter the way I interpret this scene with a UA-cam comment? It always kinda confused me why she would run away halfway through, but then return if she hadn't figured out it's Erik yet. This makes SO much sense!!
omg where did you buy it i can’t find it anywhere!! my parents wouldn’t let me get the dvd since “technology has changed so much” and the blue-ray wasn’t available but they might consider the digital version!!
I know this Phantom of the Opera is not by the book, it is adapted, so I don't know the history of this Eric, but watching this scene it made me think. If you go trough whole play, Eric actually imitates people. He sings to Christine what he wrote in his opera, which is inspired by the book he has read. In this instance he confesses his love the same way he saw Raoul did it. It is like he doesn't know how to interact with people, so he imitates what he has seen or read in books. Maybe because he spent his whole life watching people interact in operas, he is so dramatic, obsessive, why he is easy to kill people, taunt them, control them. He doesn't know any better. Part of his life he was treated badly, and the rest he tried to learn about people trough exaggerated operas. The moment he experienced something different, when Christine showed mercy and love to him, showed forgiveness, he let her and Raoul go, imitating what he learned.
@@MunroMcLaren As I said this is a musical, and is quite different from the book. So in the book the backstory of the Phantom (Eric) is described, but in musical it was not specified.
Loving the fact that "the bridge is crossed so stand and watch it burn" apply differently and mean different things to both of them. Erik is telling her she's lost the chance at freedom, so sever all of your relationships with everyone else while Christine is telling him he has crossed the line with his actions and they can never get back to the friendly relationship they had ever again. To the characters, Erik has passed the point of salvation (at this moment). He, up to this scene, is irredeemable because he has done far too many awful things. To Christine, her decision to betray Erik, the phantom, her mentor, (possibly) her romantic interest and her father figure means she is now a transformed person. She has grown from a naive girl into an adult. She has crossed the line and there will be no more relationship with Erik after this, but it marks her growth into a mature woman. They've both passed the point of no return.
That's only your personal interpretation and the meaning to this line is most definitely not like that but okay. Remember, this line is supposed to be part of an opera, Christine is purely acting, she's not aware of what this line means, looking at her face when she sings this line, she seems to be paying more attention to who the man inside the cloak is more than what the lyric actually means. The lyrics's context here mostly only apply to the situation in Don Juan Triumphant, and "the bridge is crossed so stand and watch it burn" means more like "we've had sex and our affair begins and we can't go back now" in the context of the opera they're acting in. It could also mean that after everything that happens Erik and Christine's life will forever be changed and they can not go back, but I definitely don't see this as her telling him to fuck off and that she will cut all relationship with him. You're probably a Raoulstine shipper I guess.
@GeorgeWashingmachine (this message is replying to the comment you deleted previously) 1) as you have said, it's an interpretation and an opinion, and I dont think a literary analysis can be considered "wrong" unless I have severely misinterpreted the scene and stated points with little to no or very weak evidence. 2) Christine most DEFINITELY knows it's Erik, because it has been established that he will appear, and not to mention, she literally felt his mask under the cloak and took off which led to him grabbing her wrist and dragging her back to him. All other portrayals by other actors have done the exact same. Elizabeth Southard's version even explicitly felt his face and faltered before running away. 3) I think it's a bit weak of an argument to say that since they're "acting" they cant mean what theyre saying. If you say it's wrong to say that Christine IS seduced by Erik during this song then you are most likely correct. However, my analysis was based on that one line and how it perfectly encapsulates the Buildungsroman genre (Christine's growth into a mature woman). Would you care to elaborate on why you said I was wrong? I'm fine if you disagree, but I would like to know why I was "wrong"
When he grabbed Christine, I could HEAR that angry grunt. It literally gave me chills. Not only because I fear the phantom quite a lot , _ , But because it really gives off the desperation and anger he's going through at that moment trying to get Christine on his side. I LOVE IT!
The thing I like about this version of Point of no return is that the Phantom sounds like Piangi in the beginning, but after Erik grabs Christine, he sounds like the phantom.
Yeah, he's one of the few phantoms I've heard who actually makes an effort to disguise his voice. Crawford still has his trademark ghost voice, and don't even get me started on Butler's "disguise".
My dad literally told me yesterday that by by birthday (in a week), I have to stop being so obsessed with this musical and find something else. I almost cried
3:30 I love the detail that, to me anyway, Christine felt the Phantom's Mask through the cloth of the hood and knew _for a fact_ that it was him, and thus bolted.
Well didn't he kind of touch her like that in music of the night? Maybe I’m wrong? So maybe it was like she knew what his touch was like, so she recognized it a little and got suspicious
I think that her suspicions came when he did things that weren’t blocked in the opera. For example, him touching her probably wasn’t scripted and so Christine made a bolt since it obviously made her EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Then again, I think her blocking was meant to take her to DSL, but since he grabbed her, she knew that it was him and he’d gone too far.
@@ThatFandubGirl i completely agree with you, i think she knew it was him because the way he touched her was just like in music of the night, i’ve always thought of it that way, and then after that she decides to play his game
Ramin's voice is like honey, he truly captures the seductiveness of the phantom, and his trembling reminds us of how scared the phantom is. The chemistry between Ramin and Sierra truly solidifies the fact that they are the best Phantom and Christine.
@Anne Boelyn yes , I love the thought that as any normal person *inspite of the horrible things he's done* he still gets nervous and tense by the though of the woman he loves approaching him in that way
It really shows how he's been caught off guard. She's no longer on stage with HIM. He's on stage with HER. A master usurped by his student, even for that one moment.
Also, at 3:19, when Christine sings "The sleeping bud bursts into bloom", if you look at Phantom's head, he's not just following her hands like he did just before... No, he's actually craning his neck to look at her face!! When I realized it, it felt both longing, desperate AND creepy!! Someone give Mister Ramin Karimloo an award, PLEASE!!!
Easier said than done for people with certain health conditions :/ plus the mask isn't covering his mouth and only covers his right nostril. So it's kind of a poor comparison.
Not virgin, just with very high amount of desire. When the woman you love and adore is right in your arms and seducting you... That's really gotta get you vibin'
I JUST REALIZED THAT ERIK IS SINGING LIKE PIANGI AT FIRST ( as we can see from piangi's original way of singing with his accents , & the rolling of his Rs ) , AND SLOWLY SLOWLY REVEALING THAT HE'S NOT PIANGI TO HER man i feel bad for Piangi's fans who came to see Don Juan Triumphant who were thinking ' OMG THIS GUY IMPROVED SO MUCH ' then realizing that THIS GUY IS NOT PIANGI when Christine removed the hood then realizing OMG PIANGI'S DEAD
At 2:38 when Christine’s chorus starts, there’s an addition to the music: that little clicky beat. And I just love it. It gives me chills. It adds extra *spice*
Yeah its a flamenco-style pair of castanets if I'm not mistaken, which makes sense as Don Juan was originally a Spanish stock character before Mozart's Don Giovanni.
My absolute favourite scene, the symbolism in the lyrics, the costume design, the suble emotion in the acting is amazing, not to mention the vocals. I love the intensity.
Can't believe I only just noticed. At 3:31 Christine pressed her face to his and felt his mask through the cloak. That's why she suddenly ran away. O_O
@@Hellothere_453 exactly! And what’s really cool about Sierra’s acting with this is that you can almost read her mind with this action. Like “okay, that was a pretty weird” and then her composing herself and getting back into character at 1:42. Really fantastic.
4:00 I hate how underrated is this scene, and those people that hate Christine don't even realise what she was trying to do: she literally screamed "TURN" and Erik realized what she was trying to say, he turned (before whisping _"turn"_ as he realizes) and saw Raoul almost shooting him. He knew he was going to die, so before that, he asked Christine if she would love him, and here is the moment where she remove his mask to make him mad enough to run away. She was trying to *SAVE HIM* and not humiliate him. Sure, she didn't know Erik would take her _with_ him, but still. Christine was afraid and upset for Erik's toxic behaviour, but she STILL loved him and cared for him. Both antiChristines and antiEriks are equally wrong.
That’s how I always interpreted this moment, first Christine did not want to be the bait to catch the Phantom in the first place, Raoul guilt tripped her into it, and as scared of the Phantoms violent behavior as she was, he was still her Angel, and she knew their were about a dozen guns pointed at him. Taking off his mask was her attempt to get him to snap out of it and save himself, of course she didn’t expect him to take her with him.
*IT HAPPENED PEOPLE! WE DID IT!!* Before we know it they’ll have posted the entire show permanently for us in small clips and they won’t even know it..😈 Good work team
The emotion that Ramin is able to inject into All I Ask of You (here and in the Reprise) is so heartbreaking that both times, you almost forget the Phantom has just straight-up murdered someone
Ironically how the Phantom sings reprise of "All I ask of you" after he's killed someone. The first time, Buquet. The second time, Piangi. It's like a haunting reminder that THIS is why Christine cannot return his love. As she later says: This haunted face holds no horror for me now. It's in your soul that the true distortion lies.
These two. Their voices. Their acting skills. Their facial expressions. All the passion and emotions. Ramin's phantom hands and his imitation of Piangi's voice. Their exploading chemistry. They're so PERFECT. I CAN'T. The BEST Phantom and Christine for ME forever ♥️🖤
I get why Ramin is the favorite Phantom, he's a sad boy and sells it completely. Also I love how Sierra plays Christine as intentionally seductive. She knows who she's dealing with and lulls him into a false sense of security the entire song until she springs the trap. I love cunning Christines!
This song is so much better on broadway than the movie. I love how even though you can’t see him, he’s provoking so much emotion using his hands. At 3:03 when she comes behind him and he’s anticipating the part where she grabs his hands, he’s clutching the fabric of this cloak at his knees and it just shows how he’s longing for her to willingly touch him. And the part when his hands shake, ugh!
I totally agree. I saw it live in London first and then watched the movie. The movie is good too, but this scene is better when he's totally covered. It also makes more sense, since he's supposed to be pretending to be somebody else (in disguise).
I wanted everyone I know to watch it.!!! It is my favorite opera. Download the broadway app pay a monthly fee and you can watch it as much as you'd like💙💙💙💙
What I love most about this scene is the character evolution of Christine. Up until this point, Christine has expressed fear about the idea of the Phantom, but that has always been tempered by her awe and admiration of him and has never felt fear in his presence. She obviously knew that "Don Juan" was the Phantom but was supremely confident in her ability to thwart him by throwing his hood up at 3:58 . The moment the Phantom began to sing at 4:18, she realized that she had grievously underestimated the Phantom. She could see how quickly he adapted and how he preferred to flaunt his proposal. That was the only moment when Christine felt nothing but fear of the Phantom. What did she do, though? She made the choice to have the Phantom's joy turn to ash by shattering his mystique in front of the very audience that he had seconds before been feeding off of while gloating about his plan's apparent success. That takes strengths and smarts. She evolved from a token ingenue into a multilayered character practically instantly. What a great scene!
Still here, just to listen again and again Ramin's "Anywhere you go let me go too" (4:54). Can'r even think of a better representation of Erik's desperation for Christine's love.
That moment where Christine realizes it's Erik and rushes away from him. It lasts only three seconds but damn is it impactful. Along with Erik's contained lust/rage almost coming to the surface then him regaining control...it's great acting. Ramin and Sierra have great chemistry together. It's hard to find a performer to get in that zone with but these two come off so naturally.
Srsly, the 25th aniversary version is just... CHEF'S KISS. The little details you can notice in the acting, the tension and the music is completely fantastic. I don't know how many times I had watched this performance. I just love the slowly way she recognizes she's singing with Erik and how caught off guard he is just by the touch of her, leans on her a little and tries to see her through the cloak while she is singing, pure longing. One of the few times Christine is actually in "charge" of the situation. He misses the touch of her when she finally knew he's the Phantom and not Pianggi, I think by feeling the mask under the cloak. Kinda sad because in this moment he went "past the point of no return", doing cruel things to win her and she can see it. Singing "all i ask of you" is like the last and a desperate attempt, seeking salvation in her. Everytime I watch this I could catch more details, but the point is that Ramin and Sierra did a powerful and amazing performance. The chemistry is incomparable. One of the best Phantom and Christine, if not the best. PS: sadly I watched this performance before the movie, I didn't like it that much because I had this bar set asdgshg. But the customes and ambientation were beautiful there.
BeautifulDisaster it’s is I love how at the end phantom just wanted Christine to love him the way he loved her. And I hate when people say that phantom is a bad guy for killing people. Don’t get me wrong that was messed up and I don’t tolerate what he did but he didn’t know better. He doesn’t know how to express his love because he never got it.
The moment Christine realizes it's not Piangi, but Erik...I've seen the show time after time after time, and that still sends my heart right up into my throat. Ramin and Sierra have a chemistry no other Phantom/Christine have.
Past the point of no return No backward glances Our games of make-believe are at an end Past a thought of "if" or "when" No use resisting Abandon thought and let the dream descend What raging fires shall flood the soul What rich desire unlocks its door What sweet seduction lies before us Past the point of no return The final threshold What warm unspoken secrets Will we learn Beyond the point of no return Christine (Aminta): You have brought me To that moment when words run dry To that moment when speech disappears Into silence Silence I have come here Hardly knowing the reason why In my mind I've already imagined Our bodies entwining Defenceless and silent Now I am here with you No second thoughts I've decided Decided Past the point of no return No going back now Our passion-play has now at last begun Past all thought of right or wrong One final question How long should we two wait before we're one When will the blood begin to race The sleeping bud burst into bloom When will the flames at last consume us Both: Past the point of no return The final threshold The bridge is crossed So stand and watch it burn We've passed the point of no return Phantom: Say you'll share with me One love, one lifetime Lead me, save me from my solitude Say you'll want me With you here Beside you Anywhere you go Let me go too Christine, that's all I ask of ...
I'm pretty sure that The Point of No Return was almost every theater girl's sexual awakening lmfao. Also WE NEED ALL I ASK OF YOU NEXT!!! I miss Hadley!!!! ;___;
Sierra and her "surgical precision" recorded for the books! The voice, movements, the facial expressions... The choreography! She was Christine Daae until the curtain call. Classic!
Not to mention the low grunt as he does so! The entire bit renders the "those who have seen your face draw back in fear" line in the title song all the more convincing. I believe he is feared not for his grotesquely disfigured face alone but also for his whole demeanor, as it is nothing short of a menace-whether he is masked or unmasked. I literally kept on repeating/watching that part though. I honestly just love Ramin's brilliant acting choices, alongside the smallest of details he incorporates into his character, in this particular performance. It is only one of the many reasons why he is my ultimate favorite Phantom. He is just THAT great.
Erik singing Raoul's lines is so painfully perfect. When it's sang from another character like the Phantom truly gives out different meaning. Suits him so much and I love it. 💯🫶
God, she was already imagining the things she was feeling if they were already in bed together!! Boy, Sierra Boggess can definitely portray the joys and pleasures of the flesh!!
Tars Lin I was really glad to hear news that they come to Japan. Luckily, I am a university student and have a lot of time that I can spend freely. I am going to go to see Ramin & Sierra using that time.
Tars Lin they may not anymore, it’s only a couple of months away and travelling is still not really recommended. They could reschedule to next year or just do it via Zoom (although that would be a bit boring) if all else fails.
Tars Lin Sadly it's definitely going to get postponed, idk how the situation is in Japan rn but live shows and traveling are absolutely banned everywhere
The multiple levels of tension are beautifully layered in this performance. The Don Juan sexual tension, the Christine-Phantom sexual tension, the "this can't be good" actual tension, all woven together masterfully.
You know what I like especially about this scene unlike the movie: Both actors can clearly sing and unlike the movie where the mask the phantom wore made it plainly obvious to the audience that it was him the whole time, in this version the character who the phantom killed to switch places with wore a mask that truly covered his face, which made it more of a surprise here then the movie did.
Agree. So much more intense and sad in the movie-- but because Butler and Rossum were actors. Yeah Karimloo and Boggess are much better operatic singers, but the whole scene was more intense, sexual, and just sad, in the movie.
Ramin at 3:02-3:04. DANG. and those trembling hands at 3:09. WHAT AN ACTOR. Dang Ramin. WHY. HOW. You didn't have to be this good. You're too much. Ugh WHY SO PERFECT, RAMIN????? 😩😭 Same as Sierra. She's the perfect Christine. You two. I can't anymore 😩
Ramin is so amazing. Especially love how his eyes (when visible) show *so* much emotion when he looks at 'Christine', it feels very, very genuine. Add to that Sierra's amazing acting - her face and eyes are so *expressive* , I could watch her forever and still not get enough!

Wow thanks for this
Reading this makes me wish you did a commentary/analysis of the whole show
@@jessicawhitfield7075 you're far too kind 😭💖
I LOVE IT!

3:30 I love the detail that, to me anyway, Christine felt the Phantom's Mask through the cloth of the hood and knew _for a fact_ that it was him, and thus bolted.
My theory is that she suspected from 1:32 onwards and confirmed it there
@@Error-4O4 Yeah she did. That’s why she made a face and ran. Kinda weird how him touching her made her realize it tho /hj🤨
The dynamics between Erik and Christine in this scene especially cannot be overstated.
Ramin's voice is like honey, he truly captures the seductiveness of the phantom, and his trembling reminds us of how scared the phantom is. The chemistry between Ramin and Sierra truly solidifies the fact that they are the best Phantom and Christine.

It’s like “DON’T YOU DARE RUN AWAY FROM ME MY CHRISTINE!! WE’VE PASSED THE POINT OF NO RETURN!”
It is, crazy awesome
OMG how did I NOT notice this before!! You have such a good eye!!!
I hate the movie of POTO because it's Christine is soulless and empty. Christine shoild be emotional like in musical version.

As she later says:
This haunted face holds no horror for me now. It's in your soul that the true distortion lies.

This is when the vocal casting/acting matches the physical acting. It's the holy grail for lyric theater.
i feel like i’m walking in on something i shouldn’t be seeing by watching this but i’m gonna keep watching it
What I love most about this scene is the character evolution of Christine.
YASSSSSS we finally got the clip guys!!!!
Broadway Trash Isn't it glorious?
BeautifulDisaster it’s is I love how at the end phantom just wanted Christine to love him the way he loved her. And I hate when people say that phantom is a bad guy for killing people. 1:32
The moment Christine realizes that the man under the hood isn’t Piangi.

Ramin at 3:02-3:04. DANG. and those trembling hands at 3:09. WHAT AN ACTOR. Dang Ramin. WHY. HOW. You didn't have to be this good. You're too much. Ugh WHY SO PERFECT, RAMIN????? 😩😭 Same as Sierra. She's the perfect Christine. You two. I can't anymore 😩
The amount of emotion Ramin can show only using his hand is staggering.
@UCIer01xWIoB7JEm6Oe0NMoQ I bought it from apple/iTunes movies 🍿 ♥️
The atmosphere between these two is electrifying.
Erik must have been freaking out under his hood when Christine actually held his hands, like wow talk about risqué am I right fellas?
you're right hehe
How lascivious... they were... *gulp* HOLDING HANDS >///
Ramin is so amazing. Especially love how his eyes (when visible) show *so* much emotion when he looks at 'Christine', it feels very, very genuine. Add to that Sierra's amazing acting - her face and eyes are so *expressive* , I could watch her forever and still not get enough!
