Currently watching this after being yelled at by my dad because he says I have to do research before I go and buy and install something that I thought looked cool
The video from 8 years ago is still watched by many people, with more than 8 million views. Thanks for the explanation, the details are very good, the content is clear
The best method would be to solder some wires inbetween each end as that provides the best connection. Of course make sure positive and negative ends are properly connected to positive and negative on each end. There are also a variety of connectors you could use as well. When making a long run you may need to add additional power taps, all from the same power supply, along the length of LED's. Otherwise due to voltage drop the LED's near the end very well may get dim. Think of it like a tree's branches. One at the start, one in the middle and one near the end

Excellent video, very informative - please note however for users that use subtitles, your Powering LED Strip section subtitles at 7:22 is not showing the correct recommended length amount as per the narrator in the video. The narrator suggests 9.6W per meter strip, a maximum of 5 meters is powered, however the subtitles suggest 10. Use 5 as per the narrator, if you happen to come across this in the comments section (For those without sound or have hearing impairments).
I just bought 2 rolls of these LED strips from SAYAL electronics in toronto and I will use it to light my Ho buildings for my trainset, awsome product and simple to use
Please help ive been at it 4 5 days. I have one addressable strip which works fine with controller. I cut the 1 strip into six pieces but can't get them all to work properly. I can get 3 then after that wiring in a fourth causes all of them to turn white and stay that way even if i turn them off from the remote. Unplug the forth and we're good again. Even if the 4th is just another extension with no lights attached all of them go crazy
bro I just cut mine like a little bit off the cut mark idrc ant it since when its lit up ts not like ppl will see it but im scared that it will blow up
great video, though Im still a little hazy on whether its possible to connect two different strips using the clip on adaptor as a bridge between the two? like so...... PSU >> Led Strip >> clip on adaptor >> Led Strip >> clip on adaptor >> Led Strip ...... and so on.....?
Thanks for providing such a comprehensive video ! Lot of videos are there which tell about how to cut and connect but no one and I mean it no one talks about power calculation and using the appropriate Adapter with it . This shows how detail knowledge you have . :-)
+Matthew Bishop You can cut them and power multiple bots of LED strip using a wireless controller which then pairs with a wireless or multiple wireless receivers take a look at some of these examples but we can offer for single colour or colour changing LED strip www.led-supplies.com/led-controllers/led-dimmer/wall-mounting/led-strip-dimmer-wireless-single-zone/
+Matthew Bishop Yes you can use 1 remote but then buy 2 receivers which are available on their own as order code COMPACT-RECEIVER . Doing this you can effectively power as much LED strip as you want in different places all from the one remote controller www.led-supplies.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=compact-
Hi nice clear video thanks. Hope you can help me with my situation. I want to run strips down each side of my loft stairs I need to be able to connect them by running a cable underneath the carpet so they can plug into one socket. What do I need to connect them cable wise so that it would run under the carpet on the stair treads?
Hi Lee, if you want to power 2 LED strips form a single LED driver or power supply you could consider using these 2.1mm splitter cable www.led-supplies.com/2-1mm-splitter-cables You may also want to use them in conjunction with these DC extension cables depending on how far from the mains socket the LED strip is situated www.led-supplies.com/2-1mm-extension-cables if you need any further help with your LED strip installation just let us know :)
***** Thanks for the reply but I am not seeing that as a solution as the black cable looks bulky and will be difficult to hide and I don't think It will go under the carpet well. I think I will just have to do a single white strip on one side but wonder what the neatest way will be to take the wire from the end of the lights to the socket which is located just above the stairs to the left on the loft floor.
Excellent, In about 5 meter or 16 foot Length of LED strip light...i have about 45 x 3 LED sections. What or how much Voltage required in EACH section....about 4 to 5V or 12V?.....not sure if Constant V or I type...then I can use One 3 LED section from my PC USB at 5V?
It's 4 leads on mine I think. I just got my first rgb strip and I guess I'll solder up and throw on heat shrink tubes so I can extend the strip from my desk behind my acoustic panels and to my shelf on the wall.
Great video. Can I connect my 5m strip directly to a 12v car battery? As I have a simple 12v Solar panel charging it in my garage which doesn't have a 240v mains supply .
All of these special adapters and extra part numbers you don’t really need to just simply power some low powered Led light strips like these.. *1.Cut the charge end off a USB phone charger cable- 2. Strip back the red and black wires to bare metal wire. 3. Attach/solder the red wire to the +positive on the led and the black to one of the other copper pads depending on what color you would like them to be! 4. Plug the USB end into any 5v source/ phone charger block... Let there be light! And save your money by using old shorted phone charger cables!
I have two kitchen cabinets with a gap of 4ft in between. Is it possible cut the led into two strips and reconnect to make one strip again? Also do you have a snap connector wire that would bridge the 4ft gap as it will be tiled later on?
I want to attach led lights to my bed but I don't own the bed. Can I buy wood planks and attach led lights to the wood planks and fit the wooden planks under the bed so I get the same effect but without it being permanent? Would this be acceptable and work well?
Hi this video was very helpful. My question is how many watts should my power supply be for powering 3 singled colored led strips to just that one power supply? The colors are red, blue, and warm white and each 5meter strip takes up 12 volts. Any help would be much appreciated.
RobsMemoryLane Hi Yes, you can add more LED strip on - check each spec to refer to maximum single run lengths. for running in series You can also use repeaters to power more LED strip from a single dimmer or controller like these www.led-supplies.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=repeater or we do a range of quick connecting cables to make the job easier as well like these www.led-supplies.com/led-installation-accessories/cables/corner-connection-cables-for-led-strip/ or maybe these connectors www.led-supplies.com/led-installation-accessories/connectors/. Thanks for contacting us i hope that helps
Hey so I'll be buying the strip lights unfortunately it isnt that long for my room and what they suggested me is a motherfreaking big strip lights that I dont even like. So will it work if I bought two of the strip lights and connect them together?
hi great video but I have three 5m 3528 white led light strips that I want to run as one what is the best dc power supply to use as a have tried a 12v 2a and it works great on a 5m led light strip but light flickers when using it to power two 5m led light strips also have a dimmer controller
so which power supply you choose to power 3 x 5M lengths of LED strip depends on the power of the LED strip For example, if its 4.8 Watts per metre LED strip then 5 metres will use 24 Watts of power (4.8W x 5M = 24W). So if you are powering 3 of those that means you need a power supply rated to 72W or higher (3 x 24W = 72W). In this case we would suggest a 75W LED driver (or a 90W power supply allowing a good 20% headroom) i hope this helps it may also help to use a splitter cable to power the 3 lengths www.led-supplies.com/led-installation-accessories/cables/2-1mm-splitter-cables/
Just add an input wire - something like this www.led-supplies.com/led-installation-accessories/cables/quick-connect-power-cables-for-led-strip-lighting/ there are different versions of this for different types of LED strip and then you can power it up from an LED driver as usual
Hi RickDawg527, you can order these quick push on connectors for single colour LED strip at www.led-supplies.com/quick-connect-power-cables-for-led-strip-lighting If you need the same type of connectors for RGB LED strip lighting take a look at www.led-supplies.com/quick-connect-power-cables-for-rgb-led-strip-lighting Thanks for taking the time to watch our video
Thanks for your kind comment. We are UK based but can ship LED strip lighting or any of our products globally by Fedex for fast delivery, usually from stock
Thanks ever so much for this. I have a very badly installed set of strip led lights and wondered how it was done. You have explained it well for me to approach the job with some confidence.
Great video! Simple and informative. I came into this video completely clueless about LED strips and now feel I could install LED light in the room by myself instead of having to pay someone. Thank you so much for making this video.
I completely understand your calculations, but if the lights are rated at 20amp that because it's the amperage the wires can carry safely. I'd even be okay using a 25a fuse, but any higher than that you risk the wires breaking down and possibly catch fire if you're not careful. That's how I was taught to use fuses. My reasoning for watching was to see what was needed. I have multiple rolls. Mostly 4 tab. I do not have power supplies for them. If I add a circuit or even hook it up with the radio supply. Can I run a black and red wire from the radio, wire the red 12v from the radio to the 12v tab on the strip. Then hook my negative to red, green and blue? Or do I have to decide a color to use permanantly? None of the led rolls came with a controller. I'm brand new to this. I hope to hear back from you. Thanks for the video
I WANTED TO CUT MINE AS IT WAS TOO LONG BUT THE ONLY VIDEOS I COULD FIND WERE THOSE NEEDING TO CONNECT STRIPS TO ANOTHER SET. I JUST CLOSED MY EYES AND IT WORKED, BUT PLEASE DO A SEGMENT ON THIS!!!!
helcat316 If you mean 4 lithium ion cells connected in series you will what to get a power transformer or something like that (cant remember right now) to keep the voltage between 12-14V because a charged lithium ion battery is around 3.9v X 4= 15.6 Volts which will burn out the LEDs or make them turn into a very weird color
+Alejandro Chavez Ramirez If you want to power just a small piece of LED strip from a battery this is perfect as once the batteries are fitted it provide a 12vdc output www.led-supplies.com/led-drivers/portable-power-battery-for-led-strip-lighting/battery-pack-for-led-strip-12vdc-8-x-aa/

What would be required for high powered ,or high output, or super bright,I'm not sure if I'm using the right terminology, and what are the differences & costs advantages,or disadvantages, I am an airbrush artist and need bright light ,I'd like to use and retrofit 2 or more 48 inch florescent lights to cut down on shadows ,I'm thinking 1 above me,and 1 on the left of me and 1 on the right of me,the only shadows I want around my working area are the ones I create with my air brush . Thank you for your informative video ,I'm hoping for a response and some direction to what I need and cost associated with both systems.again thank you so much. Floyd gross.

For example, if its 4.8 Watts per metre LED strip then 5 metres will use 24 Watts of power (4.8W x 5M = 24W). So if you are powering 3 of those that means you need a power supply rated to 72W or higher (3 x 24W = 72W). In this case we would suggest a 75W LED driver (or a 90W power supply allowing a good 20% headroom) i hope this helps
it may also help to use a splitter cable to power the 3 lengths www.led-supplies.com/led-installation-accessories/cables/2-1mm-splitter-cables/
I LED's my desk, And It was to long so I cutted it (correctly). So now I have a left over LED strip, but how can I make that work?
Just add an input wire - something like this www.led-supplies.com/led-installation-accessories/cables/quick-connect-power-cables-for-led-strip-lighting/ there are different versions of this for different types of LED strip and then you can power it up from an LED driver as usual
Just like he did in the video
Are you brain dead ? It's shown on the video FCS

The video shows how to establish a connections on the strip maybe put your glasses on an re watch the video
Okay can you cut them and then use both pieces of the lights? Because I don’t wanna waste 15 feet
Excellent presentation and clear explanation, answered a lot of my questions, thank you.

If i cut the strip will it still work so if i have a strip connected to power then i’ve cut it in to bits will it all work in sync?
Why didn’t you show how to put two together?! That was the only reason I came here.
solder them together using short wires
What are the connectors called at 3:00 (clip connectors?) And where can i find them online!? I am in serious need of about a dozen!!
Hi RickDawg527, you can order these quick push on connectors for single colour LED strip at www.led-supplies.com/quick-connect-power-cables-for-led-strip-lighting
If you need the same type of connectors for RGB LED strip lighting take a look at www.led-supplies.com/quick-connect-power-cables-for-rgb-led-strip-lighting
Thanks for taking the time to watch our video
very precise very direct very informative. would consider purchasing kit from you just from the quality of the video. regards
Thanks for your kind comment. We are UK based but can ship LED strip lighting or any of our products globally by Fedex for fast delivery, usually from stock
can I run led strip on 12w battery?
Yes you can. check out this section www.led-supplies.com/led-drivers/portable-power-battery-for-led-strip-lighting/

12V would be better. :)
Go for it 👊
Indeed, I agree :D
Thank you very much for posting this video. This was very informative, & educational as well. You sir have a new subscriber. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, exactly what was needed :)
I WANTED TO CUT MINE AS IT WAS TOO LONG BUT THE ONLY VIDEOS I COULD FIND WERE THOSE NEEDING TO CONNECT STRIPS TO ANOTHER SET. I JUST CLOSED MY EYES AND IT WORKED, BUT PLEASE DO A SEGMENT ON THIS!!!!
They can run on a battery these LEDs? is for the few, not one meter
+Alejandro Chavez Ramirez As long as it's a 12 volt battery its fine
+PC TechTips what if you want to run a 4s lipo batttery pack woud like to build led race track outside
helcat316 If you mean 4 lithium ion cells connected in series you will what to get a power transformer or something like that (cant remember right now) to keep the voltage between 12-14V because a charged lithium ion battery is around 3.9v X 4= 15.6 Volts which will burn out the LEDs or make them turn into a very weird color

Wanting to illuminate jewelry display cases inside from glass top around the perimeter. Case measures 18"x46". How do you provide to turn the 90 degree corners?
Great video, very thorough!
