  • Part 1 of 2 Rebuilding / replacing bearings in my transaxle transmission off my older model MTD mower, transaxle model 717-1050 or 717-761 and several other models are built basically the same, but may have different part numbers for the bearings. This is the type of transmission that has forward neutral reverse, no actual gears in it. I show all the part numbers at the end of part 2 of all parts i replaced in this 2 part video. Thanks for watching!!!

    I read books about engines, I had a small one as a youth, plus my father was always working on cars, souping them up etc. :)
    I started off by trying to build a supercharger cooling shroud for a 3 horse Briggs when I was in high school. Then I wanted an air compressor, which I did finally build. The Sleeve Valve came along when a friend found an article on it in an old SAE Journal from the 1920s. Been making things every since :) Lots more to build!

    Thanks for this video. Your video is helpful to me as I am in the process right now of replacing the old transaxle in my 2000 MTD Riding Mower, because the housing on the old transaxle cracked all the way around it. A new transaxle from MTD for my mower costs $617, which is too much to spend on an 18 year old mower, and so I bought a used transaxle from a 1996 mower off of eBay for $120 + $20 shipping. Before I install the new (used) transaxle I am going to take it apart, clean all the old grease out, inspect the internals, and then refill it with new grease. The new grease I will use is "Super S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease Grade 00". I bought it at Tractor Supply for $4.99 a quart. I had did a lot of online research before going with this grease, and many lawnmower repair forums recommended it. After I get the transaxle installed, and the mower working again, I might split the housing in half on the transaxle that is cracked and see if it is weldable, and if it is then have a local welding shop TIG weld it. I already talked to them about it, and they said they could do it and the cost would be about $50.

      your welcome, glad to help out. I hear ya, wow that is expensive for a new one, you can get a new mower for not much more haha That is a good idea to do that, that should last a good long time. I'll have to try that grease next time i do one. I have seen videos of people welding them and they seem to hold up, but it has to be done right, aluminum is hard to weld. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Brother, you are my hero. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Now I know what I’m working with, gonna tear down that transaxle without fear of breaking something permanent. I’m thinking heavyweight gear oil might be the way to go over grease packing. It’s a wet-sump, so splash lube should do the trick. If I can find a place thick enough to tap I might try to install drain and fill plugs, but that aluminum looks pretty thin.

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  4 роки тому

      Your welcome, glad to help out! Some people actually recommend a grease/oil mix in these, as long as you put a sealant on the surfaces and replace axle seals as well, it will stay in it. I'm sure a fill and drain plug could be added, just probably can't tighten it to much. Thanks for Watching!!!

    My problem is that neither my new wife nor I want to part with lots of our goodies, and it won't all fit into the house! Slowly I am moving more engine stuff out into sheds in the yard, since mice don't affect Brigg's much, but they tear into blankets and Christmas trees or books!

    1:55 If you don't use the right grease you WILL be rebuilding the transaxle again.
    MTD requires Shell Darina grease - only. When I rebuilt my transaxle I used good quality moly grease. The transaxle lasted about an hour before one of the gears seized to a shaft and the tractor would only run in reverse.
    I checked into the grease and found out their grease is the only stuff, at least that I was confident in buying at that point, that had a low enough working temperature to work. The grease has to have a low operating temperature for sufficient oil to separate from the soap or it won't lubricate the shafts and the gears will seize.
    The grease is available from the parts supplier with all the rest of the parts. It's cheap, buy it.

    seizing may have occurred if you did not grease the brake shaft before putting the bevel gears on it. Manual says to do it to prevent cold weld of gear to shaft.

    Quick question: thIs Is the closest video so asking here). I just got this working following your carb videos. I went to change gears, pressed in the clutch pedal, heard a pling sound (metal falling onto metal), and could not engage any gears, The pedal did not return to its original position and seems to gave no effect in engaging the transaxle. I think some connector came loose. This is a murray riding mower, 38608X92N. I cannot see the end of the clutch rod near the transaxle. the big sprint seems to be connected, and when pushing the clutch, the rod moves but cannot tell if it is moving something and the back end. Does the housing where the battery sits come out without dropping the transaxle?"
    Went and looked some more, very hard to see this stuff on this mower, but i found the source of the pling, exactly what I thought it was, a busted spring, the Extension Spring 165X74 . Still have to say thank again. Your videos have brought back to life this old mower.

    My Troy Bilt X609G riding lawn mower is now riding rough in FWD. Anytime I increase speed or try to go up an incline, it grinds, jerks and acts like it doesn't want to move at a constant speed. I just replaced all of my belts, blades and the air filter for seasonal maintenance and it is riding like a brat kid to the shower. The Transgear might be on it's last legs. Can anyone offer advice to what it might be?

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  9 років тому

      zaneyone1 We had one do that a long time ago, it was either a inner bearing was broke on the axle, or on the other shaft that the forward reverse gears ride on. It could be a tooth broken off or a spline slipping. Also it might be something simple as the gear selector loose or bent not letting it go in gear all the way. thanks for watching!

    Hey What is the recommended type of grease to use on this transaxle? How much do you use to coat all the gears and bearings? thank you

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  6 років тому

      I've been told to either use the thickest grease possible or using a regular grease and mixing it with gear oil (90 weight) so it will flow on all the gears and bearings, some will use a grease fitting and pack them completely full. I used probably the equivalent of a tube and half. There is alot of opinions on this... Thanks for Watching!!!

    I was riding my mtd the other day and the rear tires locked up. I had to take the belt off to push it back to the house. Is the pulley on top of the transaxle supposed to turn when you push it in neutral? It won't move at all when I push it in gear. The only way I can push it is to put it in neutral and take the belt off. None of the pulleys are seized up.

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  5 років тому

      No, it should not turn when its in neutral, are all of the gears or forward/reversing working? If not then the shifter may be broke or lose, also check the brake, if its stuck they will act strange sometimes. Thanks for Watching!!!

    I converted it to oil (ep 80-ep 90 ) with drain and refill and a fix magnet to hold the dirt
    it drip a little , refill it every 70 hours works fine

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  9 років тому +1

      I've thought about doing that, but was afraid the oil may not get to the upper spindle bearings, but it would probably do better than grease in the long run. Thanks for Watching!!!

    • @jorisvandervliet1007
      @jorisvandervliet1007 9 років тому

      Yep , upper spindle has a grease nipple with a long copper tube so I can grease it now and then (ottherwise i can't reach it without the copper tube) To keep the housing oil tight I used locktite but it drips ( A large cartbord under is the solution )
      The tranny has no 'meat' to convert to real bearings .
      Now i am thinking to fill it with SLICK 50 .tranny oil .
      Do you have converted the mowerdeck spindles ? I prefer I could grease them
      , or put high quality sealed bearings in (next)

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  9 років тому

      Joris van der vliet Heard that, shame it leaks though, but at least its not to bad just having to put more in every 70 hours. As far as the blade spindles (I call them quil assemblys) I haven't gotten around to it yet, because mine are the small type, as i show in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/83QihJt4uog/v-deo.html , but a hole could be drill somewhere between the 2 bearings and a grease fitting could be welded to it. You can actually replace the bearings in them, as well if you wanted to go that route. Alot of options really, now as far as the bigger spindles on like the newer mowers, a grease fitting can easily be installed but alot of grease will be wasted as there is quite a big space between the housing and the shaft though. but its definitely doable.

    • @beechermudmowers5397
      @beechermudmowers5397 7 років тому

      Joris van der vliet yep I don't have a fill or drain plug I just kept the little amount of grease that was in there and filled it up to the top with 75W-90 synthetic lol

    • @zedcartwright5267
      @zedcartwright5267 7 років тому

      That is a good lubricating rear end oil. But it is first best to clean all old grease out and replace it. I don't know about yours but mine is not a completely sealed unit and it does not even use a gasket. The grease is thick enough not to run out, but 90 weight is oil not grease and even though it is a heavy and good rear end lubricant it may over time seep out of the transaxle. I cleaned all the grease out of mine and put new grease in and added a small amount of STP to help keep it slick. Seems to work fine. Your's will no doubt work fine as long as the oil doesn't seep out and all the gears and bearings get oiled. These things don't turn fast enough to get all that much friction. So it should not be necessary to put the same type grease in it that came out of it as long as you remove all the old grease and fill it up as much as you can get in it with new grease.

    hahah ain't that the truth! well thanks! yeah i wouldn't have done if you were the one who designed the type of engine. but i guess i could be considered a semi-copy cat haha if it hadn't of been for you, i probably would have never even heard of a piston valve engine, or any other of the types of engines you have built!
