You don't need salt at all. Where I come from, years ago, we were losing power every other day, sometimes for days, so mom used to make candles using cotton and oil. It's just a piece of cotton soaked wet twist between two fingers and light it up. It will burn for hours. And we also had a lot of mosquitoes, so before turning the light on, my mom would smudge the light bulb with oil and then turn the light on. All the mosquitoes would stick to the bulb. In the morning, mom would just wipe the bulb off. Worked like a charm

in the war of 1990, we used oil, but instead of salt, we poured ordinary water, and we put a shoelace through the crust of bread as a fuse and put it on the oil to float, that's what we used instead of candles

Clever, or a slice of a cork from a wine bottle with a hole in it would do it. With a floating device and the twig underneath, you can pour a little water in the bottom, then oil on that. This cools down the oil so the glass wont crack. Also, its safe. When the oil runs out, the cork sinks and the twig reaches the water and puts out it self.

I've just tried it and it works!! 😊🌟🌟🌟😍💕🙏Thank you so much!! I didn't use salt, I just coiled a wire to sit at the bottom of a glass jar and used a cotton rope around the wire soaked in sunflower oil. At first, the flame made its way down slowly and I was thinking that it would die once it touches the oil inside the jar but no! The flame is now steady and it is a big flame sitting on top of the oil. (I tried it before with margarine but the flame just died as soon as it touched the margarine!!). I'm overjoyed that I have finally got it right!! I have put it inside my iron Woodburner and ill wait to see how long it lasts!! Thank you loads!! 🙏💕🌟☃️❄️🌨️ (as gas prices are up, I appreciate having a constant burning flame around the house!!)

Just to update you... I advise everyone to use these oil candles outside for the garden, etc. I used it indoors and this morning I found black soot in my nose... So, I will not use it indoors again with my son. But great for outdoor parties! 🎂🌟🎉🎉

We have been using oil and cotton wick lamps🪔 in the Hindu & Buddhist Temples and also our homes for centuries in India and the neighbouring countries ! 😀.
The wooden stick in the wick is also an option if the lamp is so designed with a small hole to fit it in . Butter is preferred to oil as it doesn't create black soot in the ceiling or wall .
The salt is however a new concept .

use a wooden barbecue stick, it's longer and safer compared to binding the sticks with scotch.
you can also roll all together a paper shit and a handkerchief on the outside layer: the paper will strengthen the wick and the handkerchief will absorb the oil.
know that used oil will smell a lot and your home will have a (fries or else) scent. but if it's an emergency just do as you can.

Better still find a small round metal holder - a wick holder from a tealight works - and punch a TINY hole in it, just bit enough for the wick to come through. Then float that on the surface and it holds the wick in place. You can also use plastic, I've seen that done as well, and you can make very decorative ones with shells/flowers etc in the water [add food colouring if you want to] before putting the oil on top. They were very fashionable to buy/use about 7-10 years ago.

Please, be careful not to use synthetic fragrances as they could poison the air you breath, should you use the candle indoors… for example in the Northern hemisphere during winter.

Instead of wasting salt use cotton drawstring 2 inches more then the height of the jar.
make a tight fitting hole in the lid of jar from inside in X shape and bend the four cutting outward to top side of lid to secure the cotton drawstring wick fill the jar and light the lamp
