I think Tom from Do You Nerd said it best on our last video about hot takes; to some degree, we're all gatekeepers and we all have opinions about gaming and collecting. I think it's probably the same for anyone that collects anything. You always get some sort of flack. At the end of the day we need to understand we're not all the same and our goals and opinions are not all equal. Personally, I don't care what happens outside of my game room. What I want to do with my collection is for me to decide.
Yup. Everyone has something to say about other people. It shouldn’t always be a competition or jealousy. People should just live their best lives! And that’s a great outlook. Enjoy your game room with the people that mean the most! Thanks for watching!
I agree with a lot of the points you made. I have been collecting since I got my first NES game and console. I grew up lower middle class, and we valued and saved everything, which is why most of my collection is CIB. And back when renting was a thing, we used that to determine what game was worth putting all of our allowance towards and buying. I have saved almost every game and console I obtained because I was taught to appreciate all I earned and worked hard for, so I feel that's also part of the humble beginning part. When I look at all us content creators, I like seeing each other's collections, learning about each other, and seeing what we have in common and don't. Do I feel a bit jealous when I see pieces I had or want? Yes, but I also like that fellow collectors appreciate the same items. Collecting in my area has become more competitive, so while collecting had slowed down for me I have started turning my passion for collecting into preservation and somewhat a gaming historian. Solid video.

Your collection is awesome! Just saw the video last night. And wow! All of the modded stuff. Very easy to play and enjoy. That’s awesome. But yes! Great points here. Keep on gaming!
Well, I feel collecting is just a safeguard against the whole "u will own nothing, and be happy". If the future holds some resemblance to predictions of minimalism then the old physical media will become priceless. It's like any other antique of the past. It's just wanting to preserve history, that childhood feeling, while also investing in something valuable monetarily.
Great points! Growing up, the first system I played on was the NES. I knew some people that kept all their games but most were like me and traded them in to get newer ones discounted. Collecting isn't new and definitely not bad. People being insulting on social media to others is a much newer concept. Thank you for your video!
8:47 - It seems like some arcades have a particular smell, too. My sense of smell is not very good, but while visiting a local pinball arcade recently, I smelled the same scent I remembered smelling at an arcade I frequently visited way back in 1991, where I first played _Street Fighter II_ and other classic early-'90s games. 11:01 - For me, "collector" can be quite positive. My mother collects stamps, and I've never heard anyone deride that hobby. But today, many collectors have websites and UA-cam channels where they effectively share their collections with everyone. I've learned a lot of interesting things from them!
@@betamaxuser1282 oh yes! That smell. Sometimes a bit musty but it brings back those memories! And I agree! I love learning about different things and the passion behind any collection or collector is what I love most!
If your having fun and can safely afford pursuing your hobby then it's all good. I personally love the history behind what I collect. I don't get to play as much as I used to but researching and finding items for a less popular system is always a fun venture. I'm still living a dream a 4 yr old me wished.
100%!!! this was one of the things we noticed almost immediately about certain portion of the community when we started to actively collect and then realize we could make the hobby self sufficient by reselling. people should collect the way that it best suits them and their lifestyles. Maybe you don’t want to garage sale. Maybe you get some games CIB and others loose. Maybe some games you get to complete a small collection or fulfill a childhood dream. Great video! ❤
@@wantsome-zs5sq yea different areas benefit from different methods. A friend had generally better luck on garage sales when I was having better luck on Facebook marketplace. I told him to check and gave him some tips he actually made a big score on Facebook market place. It’s definitely not as easy as it used to be but with enough effort and a little luck you can score some good deals still.
I love video games, I have gone from an Atari to PS4. My oldest daughter just recently finished a course about history of games and the last segment was on modern video games. She was fortunate enough to have her father to have a decent collection of games to help her out. I don't consider myself a collector but more of an enthusiast who truly enjoys playing old games.
@GamerAhmer I currently have about 50 games in total for my PS3; several PS1 and PS2 games. Thankfully I have an actual retro video game store near us, so I can grow my collection.
I get judged all the time for buying video games for the consoles that I have. I feel that I shouldn’t be judged for going out and about and going to the game store to look around. Most of the time I don’t buy anything, but I enjoy the conversations with fellow gamers and even the people who work in the game stores. Whether it’s Game Stop or a local Retro game store. It’s just nice to be able to do that.
For myself I do consider collecting and gaming two separate but related hobbies. Yet, I completely agree that it's really a spectrum and different for everyone. My husband and I have each been gamers practically our whole lives; long before we met. Some things we own that are rare now are things from our childhoods or we bought before it was considered valuable. Home should be a persons happy place and our shared love of video games is what brings us joy.
Oh absolutely! Should always be a happy place and should be a fun hobby. Definitely crazy to see these prices go up over the past few years too. It’s wild!
ua-cam.com/video/aSZuNyJBYj0/v-deo.htmlsi=LlQ3CeVhhJtBPlaV I talk more in depth about it in this video. It’s a Nintendo 64 K B Toys cabinet from back in the day. When the Nintendo 64 phased out employees were to change it over to the Nintendo GameCube. There aren’t many complete Nintendo 64 with the red TVs or the Nintendo GameCube ones complete out there. I got it in a pick up from someone who got it directly from there back in the day. It’s all official and has the original parts on it.
This is the first video I came across from your channel and I want to say you have an awesome collection! I also agree with your statement mostly on video game collecting but I don't know what was your favorite system growing up on whether it was Atari, Nintendo, Sega, ETC... I grew up on the Sega Saturn when that system was considered unpopular. I've played a lot of games on it, not all were great, but many were fun. Where I grew up everybody was playing either Playstation or N64 at the time. Now for some reason, almost everybody wants to collect for a failed system which is driving the prices way too high and I feel most of these people who buy Saturn games only collect it to display it and not play it. I do have a great collection of Saturn games which I don't play often but at least I have played them all at one point and I'm still on the hunt for certain Saturn games that I haven't played yet. Unfortunately, it is just getting too expensive.
Thank you so much for watching! And absolutely! I grew up with the Nintendo Entertainment system as I had family members who had that console. My first system was the Nintendo 64 so I’m super nostalgic to it. And my cousins also had a Saturn! I absolutely love that console. Just terrible to see the prices going up on it! Definitely hope they come down in price so I can grab a few more
Great video topic. I was mostly a collector at one time but these days I’m about 50/50. I have always been a gamer as well (since Gen 2) but did way more collecting than playing. Only so much time in the day lol.
When I hear video game collector... all I think of is that one person... (That must have every single video game ever made for a console / handheld regardless of how bad the console's / handheld's library truly is. It's a cool idea at first, but what bothers me is the amount of shovelware these consoles & handhelds have. I lean towards a curated collection. Simply because time, space, money, & energy is required. Between work, family, friends, + other hobbies. It comes down to time. My collection is always evolving as time goes on. Whether it's expanding or decluttering. I never had a collection of more than 50 games. All between N64, gbc, gba, gamecube, ds, & wii. I've never bothered collecting games until this year. I had about 10 titles for my 3ds, 12 for my switch, & 3 for my xbox series x. I'm currently at 179 titles, but as I play through them one by one.. I will be downsizing the ones that I don't like a lot. 100 of them are for my xbox series x, 69 for my switch, 10 for my 3ds. I always thought I'd go back and replay my games I grew up with as a kid. The sad reality is they sat in plastic bin in a dark closet for years. I realized that I had no desire to replay them . I felt it was better to let go and let someone else enjoy them.
Definitely some great points! Thats awesome that you are playing through them all. Sometimes the time just doesn’t allow it. And everyone collects a bit differently and that’s ok. Sounds like you are enjoying the items you have and that’s awesome! Thanks for watching and for the input!
How much I agree with all you said!!! Game collecting is a hobby for everyone! And of course.... if they even think of discontinue the physical media, they have lost me forever. And believe me, I am a hardcore. video game collector as well as many others. I really hope they won't even think of discontinue the retail boxed games!!! :)
My game collection has grown really big over the last few years, well over 200 PS2 games and well over 200 PS3 games (amongst other things). And no, I'm not rich. I buy the cheap games that I either remember fondly, wants to play or simply just looks awesome. If I do splurge on an expensive title for PS2, PS3, Gamecube or so on, it's probably my only purchase that month. My money, I earned them, I'll use them how I please :)
Collect what you want and how you want. There will be haters and those that are jealous but we aren't collecting for them. We collect for ourselves and the best part is we get to meet some great people along the way. The warning I would give is don't collect debt. There isn't a need to go into debt for any of this stuff.
People collect old cars and never drive them! It is just a passion of theirs. Doesn't mean there wrong! Yes cars are meant to be drove just like games were created to be played! But both ways of collecting doesn't make one right or one wrong. It is personal preference.
When I hear the word collector, I think of me, someone who likes hunting collecting observing learning and playing my video games when I'm Ready to play them.I feel like toxicity is just too accepted these days.
Speaking as a collector of just more than video games. I like the convenience I can access a game I want to play and play it. Sure I have sold some things in the past whether I regret it or not, but sometimes that does happen. Does it mean I don’t want to play those games? No it doesn’t. Of course I have a backlog only because sometimes there is a game that I want to play more often than others and when I want a break I’ll play that. Modern games these days have a long time commitment whereas the games from the Atari to maybe around the Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis era they didn’t take up as much time like these story driven games we have nowadays. I just want to play my games in peace and just ignore the negativity that others want to create. It’s just not worth my time just to argue about it.
Exactly! Just enjoying and ignoring the negativity! The backlog is always an issue no matter who you ask. Newer games take more time and I often put them off until I can have a more dedicated schedule. Definitely great points
I do appreciate the reply. I know I’m not the only one that feels that way especially with my wife included in that. Still I won’t stop although my video game collecting accelerated when digital storefronts stated shutting down though.
In my years of watching the community I've seen that it's a LOT of jealousy from people. Especially directed at you if you are a content creator and even more so if you are a CC who actively resells for content. It's difficult for many to watch someone get amazing deals on great or expensive titles, only to watch them resell it or put it up on a shelf, never to be played. Also difficult to see someone with a massive collection continue to actively collect, without realizing they might be in a great financial situation to afford it. I've seen so many people from so many different backgrounds with huge or cool collections. Many were in the game for over 20-30+ years and started when everything was cheap. Others strategically flipped and/or traded their way into their collections, making use of online forums and Discord. Seen wealthy people buy their way in. Seen really smart people do dumpster diving, curb pick ups and house/storage unit clean outs to get there. There's so many different avenues to get what you want, but effort is required. I'm fully convinced that if you have more than 100 physical video games, you're a "shelf collector" regardless. The question however is... Who cares? 😂 Just so long as it bring you joy and happiness to have the stuff in any capacity. There's already a lot of depressing crap to go around daily in our lives.
I absolutely agree! We all wish we had more or were able to score those insane once in a lifetime finds. Thats human nature. It’s how we are programmed to want to do better and have better. Same happens with all of us at some point. And exactly! Who cares. We should all just live our best lives and enjoy it while we can! This was a great response.
I feel the same. I couldn't fathom owning more than 100 games as a kid. I had about like 45 games in total ranging from gbc, gba, gamecube, ds, & wii by time I reached 18... it stayed that way until I was 25 in 2019. Sold off every game except for 3 game cube games. Last year I had 9 games for my 3ds, 3 for my xbox one x, 3 for my gamecube, & 12 for my switch. 9 months ago I picked up a series X... In the past 7 months... This year I picked up 97 for my series x & 57 for my switch. Slowly been playing through them bit by bit on my days off work. I plan on downsizing as I play through them.
@@b4rs629 That sounds about right for me as well! By the time i turned 18 I had just over 100 games across 6 or 7 consoles. Definitely didn't play more than half over all. Now I have maybe over 600-700. I quit collecting hardcore, but in no rush to sell anything. Picked up most of the great titles for all my systems, and flash cart emulation for everything else. I do love seeing some of these collections tho. The passion is incredible!
I'm currently at 100 titles for my series x that I picked up 9 months ago. 78 of them were $3-$10, 10 were $13-$20, 6 of them $25-30, & the last 6 were full price brand new $40-70. It's a great time for ps4 & xbox collecting. I rotate between 4 gamestops now 1-2 times a week to see if they got any deals. For their 4 for $10 or 4 for $20 sale. It's harder to find cheaper games as I pretty much soaked up the easy to find ones.
Awesome video, 100% with you on this one. My thought is always this....do you enjoy what you do? Yes? Then who the hell am I to judge? Jealousy of people knows no bounds. As far as manipulating the market or rising prices exists..yeah, it's a thing but it's not one person's fault. Something is only worth what people are willing to pay. + The cost of living has gone up so naturally folks are trying their best to make as much as possible with as little as possible. It's just a fact of life, not just with gaming. Also, love the MK shirt. :D
Exactly! One person is not responsible and there are many factors. Thats a great point about the cost of living. It’s tough everywhere and in any hobby. Thank you for your input and for watching! And yes. Mortal Kombat rocks!
First off I believe a person can be a gamer and not a collector but 99% of collectors are gamers. In the end no one except your significant other and yourself has any say in what you spend your own money on. While I am a realist and understand that I probably will never be able to play through every game I have the intention to do so. As long as you are having fun and not negatively impacting your life or the lives of loved ones than just do you. 🤙🏻
I get this remark a lot. Definitely not rich by any means. I built my collection over a 12 year period and just when I can find good deals. I do have other hobbies besides games, so I don’t spend every moment searching. I love my collection as is and only go after games I know I’ll love. Quality not quantity for me!
In my experience it’s the opposite. I’ve been trying to sell some vintage stuff and I get a lot of flak from Nintendo guys that have been in the hobby for a long time. Seems like they see someone that doesn’t look like a collector and they get uppity.
Sigh it’s a shame this topic even needs to come up. People resell cars, houses, antiques, but as soon as a game collector does it, they are evil. Collect how you want, play how you want!
The usa is in a league of it's own, as you have space in basements, attic, extensions. Where I'm from it needs to fit in a car parking space. There is definitely an element of some folk using social media as a driving element of the large collections. If you had nobody to show your enthusiasm would be less. I started in 1994 and your collection is 20x bigger than mine, and I have no channel to show mine of. It's just for me.
I think alot of collectors focus on having the big collections to show off on video and such while those are awesome to see i also see alot of them burn out because the lose the fun they had when they first started. I say this as im editing a pick ups video lmao
I don't know why the term "shelf collector" gets a negative reputation. If someone enjoys basking in a collection that they never intent on playing, that's their joy to be had, and more over, it's a very specific joy that warrants collecting... because you can only get it by collecting! How can anybody be mad a that? It's honestly no different than collecting art, or for better example, Pokemon cards. Many people collect Pokemon cards just to have them, without ever playing the actual game the cards are made for, yet I've *NEVER* seen anyone get mad at others about it. The game collecting world should be no different. At the end of the day, people just need to F off wit their entitlement.
Hey, dont feel bad about your hobby.....its a good constructive hobby for one to pass one from generation to generation. I mean,..if i didnt have my collections..God knows what would occupy me. It scares me think about it. Its taken me decades and many deals and failures to establish my videogame collection. A big part of collecting is timing, i was blessed to have been around when those rare items were cheap. Dont let jealous people judge for what they dont have. Emulation is availble to everyone these days.
Exactly! All great points. It makes us happy so that’s good enough! You definitely have some awesome items in your collection. Crazy to see the prices jump up on those items too. It’s wild!
Brandi the only judgement I make about you is that you must have the blessing of space to buy all those gihugous displays! Other than that, people complaining about collectors driving up prices is just sour grapes. They're just mad they can't score games for a dollar or two at garage sales anymore. Supply and demand is a law and whining 'I'm cheap' doesn't get you anywhere.
Bahaha. They are currently stacked out of view but I manage the best I can. Until I take over another area of the house. Haha. And exactly! Great points.
I am sad that marketplace and garage sales are literally a dead zone now because of all the resellers, but I really enjoy collecting. Now just have buy on eBay and local stores. I think some of the bad faith actors have really destroyed the fun of the hunt. For example phoenix, Rick, and Chase that have brought so many resellers to the community. They are in it for the money ONLY and their stupid whatnot streams. I used to like all those channels but they have had a negative effect on collecting. Sorry just my opinion. There’s many reasons why there’s no deals out there, and that’s just one of them.
Nothing wrong with your opinion. It’s always good to hear what others think about the hobby. I’m always curious to know. And luckily I still get lucky at my thrift stores. They have an influx of items and are constantly putting out merchandise. So sometimes I beat the local resellers to good deals. Not always but often.
I started out the same way with nothing. Worked hard working a middle class job to get where I’m at. 🤷🏻♀️ Just sharing tips that I’ve learned throughout my journey of collecting.
My only criticism for collectors(myself included), is "collecting to collect". It really is a neurotic behavior that fosters weird personality traits/habits. Objectivley speaking, probably NOT a good thing. *Caught myself in this pattern a few years back, much happier buying things I actually WANT.
Oh some people definitely do this. Definitely have to think if this is something you want to do and how you want to do it. I have a bigger goal in mind so I enjoy collecting a bit of everything.
@GamerAhmer No, I feel ya'. I collect comics, statues and video games; my end goal is a bit larger as well. Curating a collection with direction and purpose, expansive though it may be; is important...lest you wind up with a meaningless pile of Funko Pops from 105 different fandoms.😅
Yes. I work a normal job. Often have worked overtime for “extra” money. I have many bills like everyone else. I hunt for deals on games. I do not pay market value and have collected for years before prices shot up.
@@AJTComicsBrand The worst video is watching Chase ripping off that little girl for hundreds and hundreds of dollars. It’s absolutely disgusting. Shame on him seriously.

Oh definitely great points! I’m curious to see how it’ll be in the next few years. It’ll definitely be much different I’m sure.
Great points! Growing up, the first system I played on was the NES. I knew some people that kept all their games but most were like me and traded them in to get newer ones discounted. Collecting isn't new and definitely not bad. People being insulting on social media to others is a much newer concept. Thank you for your video!
Exactly! Thank you for watching. And definitely agree with that!
I agree with everything you said..Everyone has a hobby..Collecting and playing video games is a hobby..And it is so cool..🕹🎮🙂
Absolutely! I agree!
If your having fun and can safely afford pursuing your hobby then it's all good. I personally love the history behind what I collect. I don't get to play as much as I used to but researching and finding items for a less popular system is always a fun venture. I'm still living a dream a 4 yr old me wished.
Yes!! And same. Definitely agree with that. Always learning about something!
100%!!! this was one of the things we noticed almost immediately about certain portion of the community when we started to actively collect and then realize we could make the hobby self sufficient by reselling. people should collect the way that it best suits them and their lifestyles. Maybe you don’t want to garage sale. Maybe you get some games CIB and others loose. Maybe some games you get to complete a small collection or fulfill a childhood dream. Great video! ❤
It's slim pickings in my area. Stores have caught on to the reselling game and now price stuff at Ebay or higher.
Exactly! All great points. Thank you for watching and for sharing. It’s different for everyone! That’s what I love about this hobby
This is a very important message which as a big collector myself 1000% agree with every one of your points.
Thank you so much! Definitely felt it needed to be said. :)
Where did you get that SWEET Mortal Kombat shirt?!
The one in the video was at GameStop on clearance 2 years ago and maybe old navy or target for the one in the thumbnail.
That’s a great outlook! And that’s awesome. Definitely passing the gaming on!
@GamerAhmer I currently have about 50 games in total for my PS3; several PS1 and PS2 games. Thankfully I have an actual retro video game store near us, so I can grow my collection.
@@mikesilva5069 woah! Thats awesome. Thats great to have a local store too. I love buying games in person. I try not to buy online as much.
@@ranger64gmfr oh I absolutely agree! The people are the best part of the community. Not the haters but the ones who really enjoy this stuff!
It’s wild!
I agree! People need to stop gatekeeping in the community!
Yes!!
Can you tell me a little about that GameCube display case? Did it originally come with all that GameCube signage? So nice!
ua-cam.com/video/aSZuNyJBYj0/v-deo.htmlsi=LlQ3CeVhhJtBPlaV
I talk more in depth about it in this video.
Oh I agree! Never enough time!
One word: AMEN 🙏🏾
Yes!
Oh absolutely! Physical forever. Let’s hope it’s not all digital in the future!
Exactly! And that’s amazing. Such an awesome collection it sounds like! Very cool.
Collect what you want and how you want. There will be haters and those that are jealous but we aren't collecting for them.
We collect for ourselves and the best part is we get to meet some great people along the way.
The warning I would give is don't collect debt. There isn't a need to go into debt for any of this stuff.
Oh absolutely! That is a great point. This should be fun and stress free!
Love your game room, and yes game collecting is a pleasure to do and it doesn't matter how you do it!
Thank you!! And absolutely!
it doesn't matter what they say about collector we do it because we love it
Yes!
People collect old cars and never drive them! It is just a passion of theirs. Doesn't mean there wrong! Yes cars are meant to be drove just like games were created to be played! But both ways of collecting doesn't make one right or one wrong. It is personal preference.
That’s a valid point!
When I hear the word collector, I think of me, someone who likes hunting collecting observing learning and playing my video games when I'm Ready to play them.I feel like toxicity is just too accepted these days.
Exactly! It’s wild. I don’t understand the hate
@@GamerAhmer It's because they're mothers didn't spank them

@@robert_roland63 oh exactly! I’m curious what others think too!

I got my PS4Pro in 2019 and have over 500 games for it. Getting the games cheap in the late cycle was key.
Exactly! That’s awesome. Definitely a perfect time to collect that too!
I cant deny that resellers are an annoyance to me lol
Oh absolutely! I definitely agree with that!
I get this remark a lot. Definitely not rich by any means. I built my collection over a 12 year period and just when I can find good deals. I do have other hobbies besides games, so I don’t spend every moment searching. I love my collection as is and only go after games I know I’ll love. Quality not quantity for me!
Oh absolutely! I definitely get that! People just are quick to judge. Love the quality over quantity!

Mortal Kombat is my favorite!

23 years of collecting... most of my games i just paid $2.99 lol ebay prices forget that !
Woah!!
In my experience it’s the opposite. I’ve been trying to sell some vintage stuff and I get a lot of flak from Nintendo guys that have been in the hobby for a long time. Seems like they see someone that doesn’t look like a collector and they get uppity.
That’s insane! Really terrible that people do that. :(
I only collect what I lost or let go of when I was young.
That’s how I first started collecting. I wanted everything I used to have
Sigh it’s a shame this topic even needs to come up. People resell cars, houses, antiques, but as soon as a game collector does it, they are evil. Collect how you want, play how you want!
Exactly! It’s crazy!
It's sad to me that this needed to be addressed.
I agree.
When you collect physical games, you own it with digital games you don’t own it. You’re buying a license to rent the game.

At some point! Still looking into it. Would love to go one day!
Woah! I struggle finding the space now! Thats insane. And I’d still collect but I’m sure I would bother my coworkers with my excitement. 😂🤣

I think alot of collectors focus on having the big collections to show off on video and such while those are awesome to see i also see alot of them burn out because the lose the fun they had when they first started. I say this as im editing a pick ups video lmao
Yea I’ve definitely seen that with some people.
Oh this is a true statement! It’s wild that other collectible hobbies get a pass but people are quick to judge game collectors. Definitely insane!
@@GamerAhmer Absolutely!

Some people say that though. It’s crazy!
