Finally! Someone who understands this video. You're the first person that understands the storyline when reacting to the video. You noticed the angel of death from the very beginning and noticed the kiss of death. In all the other reactions that I have seen; everyone is so confused by the storyline but not you; you got every single detail. Love this reaction! ❤
...I had to stop working, to say that I TOTALLY agree with Empress checking ALL the boxes! ...a LOT of People didn't know C-Walken was the 'Angel of Death', some thought he was an ANGEL! ...If anything, this was One of Empresses' most ASTUTE reactions, and well worth the wait.....
There's one part, where she's at the bar and she follows that guy that ends up killing her. Right in that moment she feels this might be her last time. You can see it in her face that she knows this is it. And the angel of death starts to cry too, because it's time, and she never had the change to be happy. And then when the angel gives her the kiss of death, and the guy comes into the room, she just lets herself go and smiles, because it will all be over soon, and she feels relieved by that. The moment she was hoping for is there and her miserable life will be finally over. I have to say, her acting in this video is top-notch. Absolutely mesmerizing. If there were Oscars for acting in music videos she should win them all with this performance.
Yes, even at the very end, when they're sharing a cigarette, she's not at all devastated by the fact she just died. It's totally a "well, here we are, just as we knew we would be" moment.
@@todddepue681 also when the guy was about to strangle her, she kinda was just like “okay it’s about to happen” … She seem so nonchalant for a person about to be murdered. This video is so sad. It’s so many who distract themselves from their issues with sex, drugs, and alcohol.
One of my favorite Madonna songs and videos. I was like 4 or 5 when this video came out but I remember being so enamored with it. I didn’t get all the themes at the time but I loved it.
The number of times I've cried to this song back in the day. Ugh. Its the self destructive behavior that gets to me so bad (drinking to much, smoking to much, working to much, not much sleep, not eating right, going out all the time, no real friends, sex without a real connection, heart longing for someone else). I felt every bit of it back then. I, too, was in self-destruct mode at that time. Like I said before, I felt like she and I had been on the same life-long journey. But, OMG, can we talk about how absolutely stunning and beautiful she is in this video! 😍
I feel like the theme of song and video is timeless. Loads of single people between 25 and 40/50 can probably relate especially if they live alone in a major city. It's as current today as it was in 1992
Never clicked on a reaction so fast lol - I ADORE this video! I agree it's a top 5. Madonna has never looked more beautiful, and this video proves she would've been an amazing silent actress. I remember gossip and behind the scenes shots were in the magazines at the time. Originally M wanted Tim Burton to direct the video, he said no. This is the final project she did with David Fincher. Fun easter egg - Louise is obviously her middle name and Oriole was the name of the street she lived on with Sean Penn. The video was loosely based on the 70s movie "Looking for Mr. Goodbar." As great as both the song and video are, it bombed on the US charts. She's only performed it once live on SNL and it was amazing. PS... super thin eyebrows were a thing during this time, and Madonna was on trend, again bizarre time lol. We are definitely in the grown-ass Madonna era, and she never really looks back ✌
Pencil eyebrows were from the 1930’s/1940’s. Director Roman Polanski said Faye Dunaway reminded him of his mother and that’s how she got the role in ‘Chinatown’ over Jane Fonda. That whole look Faye Dunaway had in that movie plus the pencil eyebrows and Cupid’s bow lips. Madonna looks good onscreen. I agree with you that she would’ve been a great actress during the silent film era of the 1930’s. Faye Dunaway pulled it off and so did Madonna in this music video.
@@rpdbu8250 oh definitely! Not saying the thin brow trend started in the 90s, it just came back after the thicker Cindy Crawford type brows of the 80s. Erotica has tons of 70s influences! We all know Madonna is a film buff, so I’m sure she was inspired by many actresses, films, and decades.
Yeah! Did not do well on the charts. America was fully into Grudge and alternative music at this time. I remember MTV would not play any of the videos of Erotica due to the music of the moment getting all their airtime (all her videos went over to their other channel VH1). However, the stunning nature of this video and being directed by David Fincher did get it limited appearances on the channel under their moniker of ''BREAKTHROUGH VIDEO".
Bad Girl! Drunk by Six. Dead by 12? 🤷🏻♂️😂 Song, video, SNL performance…🔥 Glad you loved it. Christopher Walken gave it some gravitas too. One of the best videos for sure! (And omfg…the cat food lick. I’m not the only one…what is that??) 💀
***MADONNA EROTICA / 'BAD GIRL' TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...bad Girl, Sad Girl, you're such a dirty Bad Girl.... (1:07) - ....a masterpiece. ...this Video ELEVATED Music Video for Artists, and to have Christopher Walken guest Star, showed our Girl wasn't PLAYING! ...This Video, and Michael Jackson's "Heal The World" Super Bowl performance, showed both Artists becoming LEGENDS, in early 1993..... - ....but, the backlash happened for BOTH Artists, at the same time; MJ with the 'all-egations', and the "Body Of Evidence" / "S-X" backlash for Madge, which hindered this tune (along with the subject matter), & made it stall at #36 Pop...UNHEARD OF, for Madonna, who had 26 Top 20 hits in a row.....25 of them, going Top TEN! - ....The Video is based on a controversial 1976 Movie starring Diane Keaton called "Looking For Mr. Goodbar", about a pr-miscuous Woman in the 70's, who had a similar fate..... Madonna soldiered on, and appeared on SNL to perform this tune, and "Fever", which became a HUGE Dance Club hit, hitting #1 Dance, May of 1993, knocking out "Show Me Love" from Robin S... ...I'm sure the Madonnaholics will fill you in on all the OTHER Trivia, but Empress!? ...this Video was a GAME CHANGER....for Madonna, and, for US.....
You got the angel of death and the whole concept of the video during the first few seconds!! Other reactors remain confused to this day... 😂 Btw, she smokes in Express Yourself. 😏
The cat food was ICONIC for me! Christopher Walken requested the scene where he dances. There’s so many storytelling elements to appreciate it can be watched again and again
That’s right, E, “cautionary tale”! This is one of my favorite Madonna videos bc collectively (song, plot, direction, cinematography, Chris Walken looming) it all worked beautifully. Yep, it’s sad when you know early that Louise is gonna be killed but David Fincher at the helm has got us mesmerized. 🙌🏽
I’ve always thought that Christopher Walken hovering the scenes on a camera crane was an interesting detail. For long, I didn’t quite know what to make of it. At first, I thought it was merely a postmodern way to deal with what called for special effects, and which contrasted nicely with the stylish cinematography. Now I realise that Walken’s figure is not so much that of a gardian angel, as it is representing fate. Like a camera, he is witnessing what is already written, which culminates in his final kiss of death. He doesn’t influence the story, he informs it. This idea of fate is reinforced by the way the story is told as a straightforward flashback: what will happen has already happened, it won’t happen otherwise. The fact that Madonna joins him at the end also implies that he also has been through it before, and that fate and the fatality are one and the same. Now I’m tempted to say the crane is not a detail, it ties the whole thing. There might have been other cinematographic ways to bring in the idea of fate, but this one makes this video unique. (As a subtext, you can also see David Fincher still in the afterglow of directing his first feature film - Alien 3 - and still revelling in the mythology of filmmaking. Before that, he referenced movies in Madonna’s music videos - Metropolis, Citizen Kane - now he references movie making).
Love you Empress! My god this is one of Madonna's greatest videos. Beautifully shot, edited, with a story. Madonna looks gorgeous, and Christopher Walken! Holy crap this video still gives me the feels all these years later. I hope she performs this great song on the Celebration tour! Love this journey, keep em coming!
Some people interpreted that the person you called Angel Of Death was her former lover who died and she is singing about. His spirit watching over here and in the end after she got killed, they are back together sailing off into heaven... I think all interpretations are very interesting. That's what i love about this video. Everyone can have their own take on it.
If anyone could give emotion and pain across in a video, it's M. She always brings to life the actual lyrics she is singing about. You 💯 got this song! 👍👍
This video was a great storyline. David Fincher did a amazing job to making this video. If the radios rejected the song (notably the AC radios who all AC radios refused to playing the song), this video received decent airplay in TV channel like MTV and VH1. This video tell the story of the song perfectly and convey the message has well. It's very fit in the image that she took in her Erotica videos of this period. The next ''Fever'' video was a difference for the album version, because she didn't have the time to changing anything for the song before the releasef of the album, because this was recording at the last minutes and when she was at her last day in the studio before the album was ready for the mixing. When the song was released in single in Europe, she adding Nikki and Donna vocals and also changing many thing in the House beat and making the song better then in the album version for the single version.
In the early '90s Madonna was not played that often where I live. It wasn't until the late '90's/2000 when she charted here again. And the music channel aired a 'Madonna top 40', (the list was compiled through the votes of Madonna fans). So the first time I saw this video was in 2000. And I was like: 'Why did I never see this video before"? After Like A Prayer and Papa Don't Preach, this is my favourite musicvideo from Madonna. For who is interested, these videos made the list: "Lucky Star", "Borderline", "Like A Virgin", "Material Girl", "Crazy For You", "Into The Groove", "Dress You Up", "Live To Tell", "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open Your Heart", "La Isla Bonita", "Who's That Girl", "Causing A Commotion" (live from the Who's That Girl tour), "Like A Prayer", "Express Yourself", "Cherish", "Oh, Father", "Vogue", "Justify My Love", "This Used To Be My Playground", "Erotica", "Bad Girl", "Rain", "Secret", "Take A Bow", "Bedtime Story", "Human Nature", You'll See", "I Want You", "Love Don't Live Here Anymore", "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina", "Frozen", "Ray Of Light", "Drowned World", "The Power Of Goodbye", "Nothing Really Matters", "Beautiful Stranger", "American Pie", "Music".
Based on a true history of a teacher in the latest 70's ... and the movie Looking Mister Goodbar ... stunning transitions and the color blue in the night city, Madonna never act better ✌🏻💙
Stop everything. The bad Girl video reaction!!! Ive been waiting for this since we started the journey. It's in my top 3 Madonna videos ever, probably one of my favorite music videos period. This is art. Perfect video for the lyrics. So much detail, work and budget went into this, you can tell. So underrated both as a song and video. I feel like actually this so real, if people are honest, quite a few people can relate especially in huge cities. She speaking real grown ish. You are so smart, you pretty much got everything immediately. It's open to interpretation and it's always interesting what people make of it. Even i had to watch it several times when i first saw it( i did not real online) to get it all together and notice every detail. It's such a masterpiece imo, the whole mood, it's perfect for the stunning song. If she really does this on the tour this year, like she teased, i'll be singing my heart out. Erotica album is very melancholic in parts.
I knew that with your film background, you'd love this video. It's also easily in my top 5 Madonna videos, maybe even top 3. I never saw it until years after it was out, even as a fan in real time, I don't remember MTV ever playing this. But wow, David Fincher knocked it out of the park with the direction, Madonna with her wordless acting (it's all in the eyes), and the gritty winter of NYC locations (her apartment on Morton St in the village, the Empire Diner on 10th Avenue, etc). Christopher Walken is appropriately both empathetic and a little unsettling as the guardian angel/Angel of Death (kinda fitting since he starred in At Close Range with Sean when Madonna wrote Live To Tell for it!). I never get tired of watching this video. You can see influences from 1977's Looking For Mr. Goodbar - and in Madonna's acting, I definitely see parallels to her underrated performance in the 1993 film Dangerous Game with Harvey Keitel. (She later denounced the movie, but I think it's some of the best acting she ever put on film, and I see that character coming out of Louise in this video a bit.) Yeah scratch top 5, this is definitely top 3 for me.
I was flabbergasted by how quickly you got this video's concept! Most other reactors never figure it out, it's so frustrating. To me it seems self-explanatory and it's my favorite video for how beautiful and thought out it is. Great reaction.
and also can we point out to everyone who said Madonna can't act...not every singer could pull off this video haha she's not Viola Davis or Meryl Streep but i see some fine acting here and in several of her videos :)
Empress you missed one key detail. Watch the newspaper any time they show one. There are warnings about a killer but Louise is focused on her own unhappiness and didn’t see any of the headlines
So thrilled you loved this one. Def one of my all time faves. Everything about it is top tier. Your comment at the end about Madonna's maturity in this era is spot on. And as a fan who was about 13 in 1984 and 21 at this point (and thought myself extremely sophisticated btw 🤣) it honestly just felt "right", if that makes sense. I wasn't one who felt that she had abandoned me as a fan or left me behind in any way as her style changed. Nor did I ever feel I had outgrown her, as one might with an artist who doesn't constantly evolve. I may not have even realized it at the time, because it seemed so natural, but in retrospect it's easy to see that I literally grew up with Madonna. This is probably true for many others of my age, which may well be one of those "stars aligned" things that could never have been planned but resulted in such a fiercely loyal fan base.
Empress The Queen of Reactions!!!! You're the best!!!! ♥Thank you for always pointing out the best parts of each song and video you that you react to. You remind me why I love the songs and videos that I grew up to and what makes them great!
To follow comments prior, I commend you on instantly recognizing the Angel of Death and how tragically beautiful this video is. I still catch my breath when Christopher Walken’s Angel of Death gives her the fatal kiss, I almost cry.( lol)
I got emotional seeing you get emotional 😂 Apparently she had a fling with David Fincher. He was to her videos what Herb Ritts was to her photos, they got her and captured her beautifully
I love this video an era. By the time this video came out the press and people hated Madonna so bad that they started airing 1 hour specials dedicated to how her career was over. As much as I love the song it only peaked at number 36 in Billboard. I agree this is Madonnas Top 5 video of all time. ❤ the reaction.
haha omg. But you know what? She still sold 8 million of that album and toured sold out stadiums around the globe with the tour. If her career was over, people would not be doing 1 hour specials, they would just not care anymore...they obviously still did haha.
After the kiss of the death, if you look closely you can see the spot where her mole/beauty mark used to be. She stopped making it darker during this era and eventually it faded away.
I was a kid..and i remember mom loving this video. I reas trivia that originally Bad girl was supposed to be single #2 and was to be done in the style as the Erotica video..but due to backlash to that video..she held off on releasing Bad Girl until later. This video shows the whole appeal of music videos...mini movies to music.
Love your reaction to this video Empress! This is also in my top 5 of her vast work of videos and still looks stunning to this day. I always felt it was so cinematic and so different from Erotica and Deeper and Deeper. IMO all her videos from this album were so innovative in how different they all were from each other. Can't wait for you to see the videos for Fever and Rain! 🙂
I'm so happy and surprised you got everything about the video correct right from the beginning. I literally just watched a guy's reaction to "Bad Girl" before watching your video, and he did not get a thing!!!
Also, not sure if anyone has mentioned it but her name in the video is a combination of her actual middle name and the name of the street she had her house with Sean Penn when they were married.
So glad you loved it!! One of her best videos by far!! ❤ Such a shame that this era didn’t get the credit it deserved and people were narrow minded and couldn’t see Madonna’s artistry 🙄 I’m enjoying seeing many reactions to this recently and that people are really appreciating Madonna’s talent! I remember seeing this on MTV and most people were still hating on her for the whole Erotica album, sex book and the movie “Body of Evidence” so they didn’t really pay much attention sadly. I always put the “cat food” scene as a nod to her apparently turning down the role as Catwoman in Batman Returns… almost like she was a cat with nine lives. Love this song/video ❤❤❤
Faye Dunaway vibes! She got the professional business woman look of Faye Dunaway as the TV Executive in ‘Network’ movie. She also got the beret cap like Faye in Bonnie & Clyde and got the thin pencil eyebrows on her porcelain face like Faye Dunaway as widow Evelyn Mulwray in ‘Chinatown’. I never thought about it before, shout outs to Faye Dunaway. She is 82 years old now. She was simply too good in Mommie Dearest 😂 Madonna looks good, very film noir 🎞️ time piece. Bad Girl didn’t do good on the charts but this is a fan favorite from the Erotica album. Can’t wait for you to review Rain 🌧️
This is a genius video directed by David Fincher. For me, the psychology always echoed Pabst's "Pandora's Box" (1929) with Louise Brooks - Lulu knew she would die of a sex crime. I also find elements of "The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone", with Vivien Leigh and "Looking for Mr Goodbar" with Diane Keaton... Just as every artist wants a "Vogue", they all wanted a "Bad Girl" video - a masterpiece. Great review Empress, a lot of dingles don't always get it and you got it in the first 5 seconds.
So glad you liked it! This "cautionary tale" reminds me of the 70s novel (& film, starring Diane Keaton, of the same name) 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar.' (Also, but less so, the video echos another sensational 70s film called 'Dressed to Kill,' starring Angie Dickenson.) Yes, in the aftermath of the Erotica era, this video certainly makes a certain kind of statement.
This video was excellent. Pathos off the charts. Definitely among her best. It’s a shame the rest of the videos on this album (except “Rain”) don’t measure up.
@@taintedlife2618 … mmm Erotica, Deeper and Deeper, and Fever are serviceable at best. They match the mood of the songs but aren’t remarkable in any way.
Arguably her best video. A portrait of a woman with Borderline Personality Disorder, which Madonna seems to struggle with. The last video directed by her ex boyfriend, David Fincher, they met while making "Express Yourself".
Princess you are so observant. Not many recognise the kiss of death. Wishing u and ur beautiful family all the best wealth health and happiness. Love from Liverpool. Xx
One of my favorite Madonna videos also, especially love the echo fade out no music/kiss of death echo fade back in scene!!! Next video is Fever, love this version 💯 more than the album’s version.. plus the video fun and funky!!
@@EmpressReacts ...Oh, NO ya don't! ...the star of the flick (Diane Keaton) acts as if she NEVER made it, because of it's ULTRA-violent nature, and not-so Gay friendly theme(s)....BUT, the "Looking For..." Soundtrack has a bit of trivia, tho...Donna Summer was asked to contribute a tune to the flick ("Could It Be Magic")..... (cont.) ....but, she was on Oasis /Casablanca, and the Soundtrack was on Columbia....making Donna one of the FIRST 'crossover' Artists to be 'allowed' on another label's Album! ...always the 'Queen'..... ; )
MADONNA GROWS UP‼️This video & song has really stood the test of time🔥🔥🔥. Madonna will always take a chance and push the envelope. Another video from this album in which Madonna does not perform the song. I think that Louise is Madonna's middle name..
Great reaction to a great video. ❤Madonna’s full name is Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone. I heard that she used to use the name Louise to check into hotels. There was a time during the Ray of Light Era that her persona was Veronica Electronica.
I KNEW you would love this! This is in my top 5 too. So smartly done. I forgot about that transition where we're looking down at the street at 2:57 and then it fades into the bar counter. It's just a little touch but it's so smooth, another reminder that the story, like the song, is about a cycle. Time and place get skewed. Another great reaction, Empress!
Glad you liked this. Been waiting for this vid reaction for years probably. Yea Christopher Walken played the angel of death. He was my favorite actor at the time
Since you mentioned in Fever, how she did not look joyous as usual, its also interesting she cut her beautiful hair from this video really short shortly after this. Dont people always do that when theres major change in their life? I think the public scrutiny and hatred against her affected her more than she let on. She's a tough cookie but so many of her messages on this album( Bad Girl, Where Life Begins, What Is It So Hard etc.) are beautiful and got lost in the whole mayhem about the Erotica video and Sex book.
DAVID FINCHER (Video Director) His trademark transitions can be seen here: 2:59 (Street transitions into the Counter top) and here: 5:53 (Heating system transitions into Building Complex in main avenue) Also, notice how Angel of Death is already INSIDE the room (behind Louise) when he's going to kiss her. 7:13
Really *good* reaction to this video Empress. You got the angel of death figure played by Christopher Walken right away. Madonna’s videos are powerful and this is no exception. 🔥
The videos for this album show Madonna‘s attempts to keep pace with the videos MJ was creating. For awhile it felt as though there was a definite competition between the two.
MJ was doing West Side story type stuff with Bad and Beat it. Madonna didn’t have to try to keep up with him. Janet’s videos were better than his too but I think Michael always kept a wall between himself and others. I think that’s why his work doesn’t touch me that much. I do have my favorites though
Oooo - the mini movie as MJ called them. I can definitely see that being a thing as nearly every video off the dangerous album had a plot and was very cinematic
I loved this video at the time and then for many years it wasn't my favorite, maybe because it's not a video that's pleasant to watch - like "Like A Prayer." It's like watching a short film. Compared to "Rain," which I can literally watch on loop forever because it's so beautiful. But I've come around to appreciating it again. It's really brilliantly done. I do think it's my least favorite of the four Fincher videos. Nothing can really top "Express Yourself" and "Oh Father" for me. And "Vogue" is so iconic. "Oh Father" gets me every time. This one isn't as emotional for me, but it's still amazing. Madonna x Fincher was such a great combo. I wish they had done a film together, but maybe it's best that they didn't. "Fever" is fun but can't wait for your reaction to "Raaaaaain."
DONT WANT TO CAUSE YOU ANY PAIN BUT I LOVE YOU JUST THE SAME AND YOU ALWAYS BE MY BABY, IN MY HEART I KNOW WE'VE COME APART AND I DONT KNOW WHERE TO START WHAT CAN I DO I DONT WANT TO FEEL BLUE.....SHE IS SINGING TO HER OWN SELF. SHE HAVES EVERYTHING AND YET SHES NOT HAPPY SHE IS A ALCHOLIC SMOKES A LOT AND THE ONLY WAY SHE FEELS HAPPY IS BY DRINKING AND SLEEPING AROUND NOT WORRY ABOUT THE DANGER BECAUSE SHE FEELS BRAVE WHEN SHES DRUNK.EVEN THOUGH SHE WANTS TO STOP DRINKING AND NEEDS HELP BUT SHE DONT KNOW WHERE TO START AND SHE DONT WANT TO FEEL LONELY ALCOHOL IS HER BEST FRIEND...LOVE THE STORY LYRICS OF THIS SONG..I LOVE THIS SONG.....YOU NEED TO WATCH THE SNL LIVE PERFORMANCE ITS ICONIC.
The message is eerily moral. Being flagrantly promiscuous and picking up random strangers eventually led to the bad girl's end. Honestly, this is a message that people should heed nowadays, with this push to not slut shame and to do whatever feels good in the moment with whoever, and without judgment or guilt. Yeah, sure. There are still maniacs out there with a blood lust, and some lunatics are good-looking. Remember that the next time you go on Tindr, Grindr or whatever. As much as I don't generally enjoy the _Erotica_ era, and am slightly lukewarm on "Bad Girl" the song, this video was actually brilliant. Madonna went against type here. And it does look like it was cut from a feature film.
"...There are still maniacs out there with a blood lust, and some lunatics are good-looking...Remember that, the next time you go on Tindr, Grindr or whatever...." ...Oh, is THIS comment more prescient than EVER! ....Thank You, for educating these Kids.....
This was when the backlash against her was starting to reach epic proportions. Also if I’m not mistaken Body Of Evidence was released around the same time as this song/video. Because it’s so serious and ‘highbrow’ I wonder if she made this video to fend off the hate coming her way. It’s a fantastic video to an okay song. If the song had been better received, this vid would’ve swept the VMA’s.
It'S the perfect video to go with the lyrics, it was done months in advance. The song about being not happy this way and longing for a lost lover could never have a video of her happily prancing around and slutting it up ;)
🎥 🚬🫦⏱️ I knew you’d love this one! Being that you’re a fan of both Golden Age cinema (this is modern Noir) and boss lady 80s TV! It’s so perfect. The wry humour of Christopher Walken as the angel, “flying” on the cherry picker crane used by the camera itself. Ah that sweet sleek 90s meta post modern vibe, both made for Madonna and influenced by her art. Her art, and the incredible sophistication of director David Fincher, who would cross over into feature films that very same year with the release of Alien 3… Then in 1995 he would make arguably the greatest Neo Noir of the 90s, and perhaps of the entire modern era of the genre, the bleakly brilliant Se7en, so this Neo Noir vibe is something he is made for as a director. In a way he already explored a Noir aesthetic with Madonna in both the Citizen Kane inspired Oh Father and the flawless tribute to photographer Horst P Horst that is Vogue. Don’t forget he also directed Express Yourself, a tribute to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, and Lang was a god of German Expressionist filmmakers, the aesthetic movement that inspired American filmmakers to create the genre of Film Noir. This gloriously elegant video for Bad Girl also draws some inspiration from Wim Wenders’ beautiful film Wings of Desire, as well as marking the first time Christopher Walken danced in a music video… 8 whole years before his iconic twinkle toes turn in Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice video! Cycles and cycles of interwoven culture. Everything I’ve mentioned is a must see! Horst P Horst’s mid century photography is fascinating, especially as you’ll see how studied the Vogue video is to capture the vibe, and his work also influenced the entire trajectory of glamour and advertising imagery. Se7en is dark as hell, but an incredibly good film. Citizen Kane is regarded as one of the most important films of all time. Wings of Desire is a hauntingly magic realist, poetic film. Metropolis is literally so important to so many films, music videos, even album covers and comic books, fine artists and poster artists, that followed it, that it is COMPULSORY to watch it! And if you want to further explore Madonna in a Noir context, there’s her starring roles in the movies Body of Evidence and Dangerous Game. Neither is critical gold, but I personally think her raw and reactive performance in Dangerous Game is some of her most interesting, and best, work as an actress. Much homework for the overworked (and no doubt overtired) new mum! ✨🎞️✨ Oh and PS: The line is “kissing some kind stranger’s lips” (not “kind of stranger’s”). It’s a nod to the indelible line from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, where the alcoholic “bad girl” Blanche DuBois says “I’ve always trusted in the kindness of strangers”.
@@EmpressReacts there's no listing for the killer on the imdb page. and i always thought it kind of looked like her in boy drag. you never really get a good look. maybe it's like, she killed herself with her actions type of thing.
Finally! Someone who understands this video. You're the first person that understands the storyline when reacting to the video. You noticed the angel of death from the very beginning and noticed the kiss of death. In all the other reactions that I have seen; everyone is so confused by the storyline but not you; you got every single detail. Love this reaction! ❤
it embodies the song sooo well that it really outdoes the song!
Because it's Empress, right? I don't miss a single reaction of hers, it's always great to hear her opinion 🙂
...I had to stop working, to say that I TOTALLY agree with Empress checking ALL the boxes! ...a LOT of People didn't know C-Walken was the 'Angel of Death', some thought he was an ANGEL! ...If anything, this was One of Empresses' most ASTUTE reactions, and well worth the wait.....
Empress is the best music reactor on UA-cam. 💯
EXACTLY!!!!
Agree💯💯💯

"Madonna doesn't smoke. She sizzles." -liz rosenberg circa 1990-
The number of times I've cried to this song back in the day.
It's as current today as it was in 1992
Yaaaas‼️‼️I don't think I've ever heard or seen a video that captures self destruction so well
Never clicked on a reaction so fast lol - I ADORE this video!
Goodbar."
As great as both the song and video are, it bombed on the US charts.
Never heard about the Tim Burton part or Oriole. And I am a huge fan of Madonnas from way back. Thanks for the new info 😊
Oh so thin was in 😂😂😂why‼️😂 and can't believe this flopped😳
Louden Trott: "why do you smoke so many cigarettes?"
Nikki Finn: "I don't know what else to do with 'em!"
😂come thru who's that girl quote
This video is stunning.
💯💯💯
This song and video is sooo underrated. One of my favourite from Madonna. Also she proves here she can act.
💯‼️
Bad Girl! Drunk by Six. Dead by 12? 🤷🏻♂️😂 Song, video, SNL performance…🔥 Glad you loved it. Christopher Walken gave it some gravitas too. One of the best videos for sure! (And omfg…the cat food lick. I’m not the only one…what is that??) 💀
probably still more healthy than all those cigarettes ;)
😂😂not dead by 12 and yeah she was trippin with that lick
@@EmpressReacts Don't forget that she licked out of the cat bowl in Express Yourself.
not dead by 12 😭😭😭
This is an outstanding music video. Perfect cinematography..story line. Madonna's beauty and realness. I was in awe when this came out.

***MADONNA EROTICA / 'BAD GIRL' TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...bad Girl, Sad Girl, you're such a dirty Bad Girl.... (1:07)
- ....a masterpiece. ...this Video ELEVATED Music Video for Artists, and to have Christopher Walken guest Star, showed our Girl wasn't PLAYING! ...This Video, and Michael Jackson's "Heal The World" Super Bowl performance, showed both Artists becoming LEGENDS, in early 1993.....
Can't believe this wasn't a hit😳😳
You got the angel of death and the whole concept of the video during the first few seconds!! Other reactors remain confused to this day... 😂
Btw, she smokes in Express Yourself. 😏
True she does‼️ And I guess I've seem enough movies/ soaps to pick up on that
The cat food was ICONIC for me! Christopher Walken requested the scene where he dances. There’s so many storytelling elements to appreciate it can be watched again and again
I thought he was jumping rope to show the passing of time.
💯💯💯
The one and only live performance of this gem is stunning!!
🔥🔥
That’s right, E, “cautionary tale”! This is one of my favorite Madonna videos bc collectively (song, plot, direction, cinematography, Chris Walken looming) it all worked beautifully. Yep, it’s sad when you know early that Louise is gonna be killed but David Fincher at the helm has got us mesmerized. 🙌🏽
💯🔥
Best music video ever...her acting is on point and there is so much to discover each time watching this masterpiece. The song is absolute 🔥 of course
Yaaaas!!!
Totally agree about the guy on the crane informing the story. Interesting take you have on him also being in a similar predicament
😘😘😘right‼️goosebumps
Oh yes! Madonna and David Fincher. One of the best tandems ever. Express yourself, Oh father, Vogue... ❤Works of art and pure cinema!
🔥🔥🔥
Great video!!!❤❤❤
💯💯
Some people interpreted that the person you called Angel Of Death was her former lover who died and she is singing about. His spirit watching over here and in the end after she got killed, they are back together sailing off into heaven...
I think all interpretations are very interesting. That's what i love about this video. Everyone can have their own take on it.
That seems like a stretch. The filmmakers realized how much detail they could put into this film and they did a great job of no excess stuff
Hm.m that is an interesting take
Yes girl keep dropping them reactions!! Videos like this make you love her all over again the goddess of pop for real
Glad u enjoyed 😊
If anyone could give emotion and pain across in a video, it's M. She always brings to life the actual lyrics she is singing about. You 💯 got this song! 👍👍
💯🔥💯
For Fever she probably just didn’t hear a remix until after and liked it more than the album version and wanted it to be more successful.
Crazy this wasn't a top 10 hit
Oh wow‼️
Based on a true history of a teacher in the latest 70's ... and the movie Looking Mister Goodbar ... stunning transitions and the color blue in the night city, Madonna never act better ✌🏻💙
loosely based ;)
Wow a teacher?! Interesting
@@EmpressReacts In the movie, Diane Keaton is the teacher and Richard Gere is the guy she brings home...
It’s one of the most melancholy of all her works. Love it. People judged it without coming along for the ride fully.
4:53 Empress you wrong for that 😂❤
💯💯💯either you have experienced this or no one some one who is "not happy when they act that way"
Masterpiece. Periodt.
💯💯💯🔥
Oh wow! I didn't realize it was the same guy. I want to see this Goodbar movie..
This video is just sooo good, I can't believe it wasn't played 😳
I was flabbergasted by how quickly you got this video's concept! Most other reactors never figure it out, it's so frustrating. To me it seems self-explanatory and it's my favorite video for how beautiful and thought out it is. Great reaction.
Thanks! I hope you check out my entire madonna journey. I started with early demos and now im in the bedtime story era
and also can we point out to everyone who said Madonna can't act...not every singer could pull off this video haha she's not Viola Davis or Meryl Streep but i see some fine acting here and in several of her videos :)
Agree
....OH, it's about TIME.....go ON, Bad Girl..... ; ) (5:07)
Empress you missed one key detail. Watch the newspaper any time they show one. There are warnings about a killer but Louise is focused on her own unhappiness and didn’t see any of the headlines
Right. True. That's what i noticed only after watching it several times as well. So much detail in this video.
Oh wow1 I did‼️ rewatching now
So thrilled you loved this one.
Yeah... Same! 💓
Hmmmm interesting ‼️I understand what u mean
Empress The Queen of Reactions!!!! You're the best!!!! ♥Thank you for always pointing out the best parts of each song and video you that you react to. You remind me why I love the songs and videos that I grew up to and what makes them great!
Aw thank you so much ‼️
@@EmpressReacts Queen of Reactions, that is now your official title! 👑📽👀❤️💯
To follow comments prior, I commend you on instantly recognizing the Angel of Death and how tragically beautiful this video is. I still catch my breath when Christopher Walken’s Angel of Death gives her the fatal kiss, I almost cry.( lol)
😂right
I got emotional seeing you get emotional 😂 Apparently she had a fling with David Fincher. He was to her videos what Herb Ritts was to her photos, they got her and captured her beautifully
😂we're always a vibe!
Can't believe this wasn't a top 10 hit 😳
After the kiss of the death, if you look closely you can see the spot where her mole/beauty mark used to be. She stopped making it darker during this era and eventually it faded away.
Wow! I literally forgot all about it
SNL Badgirl live vcoals gurrllll!
💯
Can't wait to hear ‼️
Character name: Louise Oriole - the name of the street she was living on in the Hollywood Hills.
Nice‼️
Madonna has done so many phenomenal music videos but this one is my personal #1!
🔥🔥
I was a kid..and i remember mom loving this video.
I reas trivia that originally Bad girl was supposed to be single #2 and was to be done in the style as the Erotica video..but due to backlash to that video..she held off on releasing Bad Girl until later.
This video shows the whole appeal of music videos...mini movies to music.
Interesting
Love your reaction to this video Empress! This is also in my top 5 of her vast work of videos and still looks stunning to this day. I always felt it was so cinematic and so different from Erotica and Deeper and Deeper. IMO all her videos from this album were so innovative in how different they all were from each other. Can't wait for you to see the videos for Fever and Rain! 🙂

Super freaking excited for this!!! One of my favorite Madonna videos 💕
I still put the vid to Deeper and Deeper above this, but Rain is above them both.

Interesting 💯 ‼️
Also, she put out so much cat food. It’s like she knew her time was up so she didn’t want the cat to go hungry.

This is only my second time watching this video in full. It’s really great, I enjoyed watching it with you 😊
💯, felt like we pulled up, gotta a ticket, ate the popcorn and left with goosebumps 😂
She was simply too good in Mommie Dearest 😂
Madonna looks good, very film noir 🎞️ time piece. Bad Girl didn’t do good on the charts but this is a fan favorite from the Erotica album.
Can’t wait for you to review Rain 🌧️
😂😂exactly ‼️‼️‼️ I saw this Columbo Faye made in the 90s that also gives off this vibe too 😂
all time my fav video
🔥🔥
This is a genius video directed by David Fincher. For me, the psychology always echoed Pabst's "Pandora's Box" (1929) with Louise Brooks - Lulu knew she would die of a sex crime. I also find elements of "The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone", with Vivien Leigh and "Looking for Mr Goodbar" with Diane Keaton... Just as every artist wants a "Vogue", they all wanted a "Bad Girl" video - a masterpiece. Great review Empress, a lot of dingles don't always get it and you got it in the first 5 seconds.
Ooo now I wanna see all those video that you named
Fantastic reaction video 👍
Bad girl is my favourite Madonna song. Love this ❤
So glad you liked it!
Gotta see this movie
I love both de video and the song! Love your reaction Empress!
Thanks ‼️
This video was excellent. Pathos off the charts. Definitely among her best. It’s a shame the rest of the videos on this album (except “Rain”) don’t measure up.
It’s impossible to measure up to but all of the videos from the album are great!

MADONNA GROWS UP‼️This video & song has really stood the test of time🔥🔥🔥. Madonna will always take a chance and push the envelope. Another video from this album in which Madonna does not perform the song. I think that Louise is Madonna's middle name..
Right! Very interesting. Didn't she utter just one line in the beginning?
Post note: this video reminds me of a movie called Looking for Mr. Goodbar which has a similar theme of a cautionary tale.
Hmmm...I'd love to see it

Love this song and video, so glad you liked the video.
Amazing
Great reaction to a great video. ❤Madonna’s full name is Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone. I heard that she used to use the name Louise to check into hotels. There was a time during the Ray of Light Era that her persona was Veronica Electronica.
interesting!!!
Thank u!
Great job, loved your reaction; you nailed the meaning of the video on first try!
Wow thanks
Show! Beautiful video!
Glad you liked this. Been waiting for this vid reaction for years probably. Yea Christopher Walken played the angel of death. He was my favorite actor at the time
Glad we've finally gotten to it‼️😊
Since you mentioned in Fever, how she did not look joyous as usual, its also interesting she cut her beautiful hair from this video really short shortly after this.
Yep they sure do!
DAVID FINCHER (Video Director)
His trademark transitions can be seen here: 2:59 (Street transitions into the Counter top)
and here: 5:53 (Heating system transitions into Building Complex in main avenue)
Also, notice how Angel of Death is already INSIDE the room (behind Louise) when he's going to kiss her. 7:13
I never even caught the heating unit part and I’ve watched this video so many times since it aired

This was a tough one
Great song. 💯 Great video. 💯 Great reaction. 💯
Yeah after seeing this I wouldn't mind a full length film

That’s a really good interpretation of the lyrics. She’s talking to and consoling herself rather than a lover. Awesome 👏🏼.
I'm def gonna check it out and I 💓 your interpretation of the lyrics
Yeah even ugly people can cut you up tho 😂

This was when the backlash against her was starting to reach epic proportions. Also if I’m not mistaken Body Of Evidence was released around the same time as this song/video.
Because it’s so serious and ‘highbrow’ I wonder if she made this video to fend off the hate coming her way.
It’s a fantastic video to an okay song. If the song had been better received, this vid would’ve swept the VMA’s.
It'S the perfect video to go with the lyrics, it was done months in advance. The song about being not happy this way and longing for a lost lover could never have a video of her happily prancing around and slutting it up ;)
Interesting
You need to look at SNL when she performing live
I'm going to!
Great Reaction, Empress. Anazing video from the time of her mediocre ' Body of Evidence' film. This video is much better. Glad you enjoyed it ❤
Dang😂now i wanna see the film
Oh and PS: The line is “kissing some kind stranger’s lips” (not “kind of stranger’s”). It’s a nod to the indelible line from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, where the alcoholic “bad girl” Blanche DuBois says “I’ve always trusted in the kindness of strangers”.
@Peter Savieri, get out of my head with the Dangerous Game reference! You always make wonderful points!
Love reading your comments!
Thanks for that line correction ‼️And the streetcar named desire reference. A great comment for a great video
The eyedrops/eyelash flick part ....omg.... I'd rather suffer than do eyedrops....freak me out😵
😂😂
my conspiracy, my theory... madonna plays the role of the killer.
okay...i need deets...explain 😂
@@EmpressReacts there's no listing for the killer on the imdb page. and i always thought it kind of looked like her in boy drag. you never really get a good look. maybe it's like, she killed herself with her actions type of thing.
@@mark902 interesting ‼️good stan investigation 🤣I gotta rewatvh noe
