You stated this wonderfully, "The important thing is competing with the previous version of yourself...instead of comparing yourself to everybody else" I like that assessment! Thanks!
love how you use woodworking tools some carvers have you whittling large chucks of wood when a saw cut would work. You don't make it complicated I like that have a great day of making shavings :)
You make me smile (and laugh out loud)! These vlogs are wonderful and I look forward to them. Your humor is the absolute best and I appreciate you sharing it with all of us! ‘Starving Santa…..’. 😂😂 looking forward to your next vlog showing us how to add flies to our carving regimes…. 😂😂
I struggle immensely with faces, eyes, noses, etc. In fact I just came in from my carving desk after throwing an attempt at a wood spirit in my burn pile. I appreciate your candor about your own carvings and I won't give up on mine. I'm just extremely frustrated. Also, there is an oil that I use before painting my carvings called Circa 1850 Terra Nova Naturoil. It doesn't really discolor lighter woods and allows the paint to remain true to it's color. On darker woods, that oil brings out the grain nicely and I may not paint at all. Thank you for your videos!
Highly enjoyable video. As with most things in life, it’s more about progress than perfection. What I mean is don’t be discouraged if you’re not achieving your perceived perfection, be pleased to keep making continuous progress towards any end goals.
I'm new to your channel and just subscribed. I like your presentation and style. I'm a seasoned woodworker, but have just stated making chips. So far I'm good at making a piece of wood into a smaller piece of wood. I look forward to trying some of your creations. Cheers from Oregon!
Hey, that depends! If it is a painted carving, then you can put some wax on it. For example, Howard feed-n-wax polish. If it unpainted wood, then some kind of oil (walnut, linseed, danish...)
Where would you recommend buying the wood / tools for a beginner? Do you have a list of what a beginner needs to get started? I'm thinking of buying a few things as a surprise for my wife, she loves your tiktoks (and so do I) 😊
Hey, oh, that's amazing! Well, really depends on what you guys would love to do. I would suggest with starting simple though and carve little basswood things first (I have some tutorials on basswood here). You don't need many tools. I do everything mainly with one knife, which is a detail knife. Check what you have available in your area! Beavercraft detail knife or flexcut detail knife are good. Then you would need a leather strop and some green compound for honing the blade. Some basswood blocks (I buy them on ebay usually, but you can just google "basswood blocks" + area and see what comes up). And a saw to cut blocks - I uses tenon saw, but you can get whatever seems appropriate. Cut-resistant gloves could be useful too. I do have a tiktok video on that, I think it's called "What you need to start carving". Good luck!
If you sell at craft fairs, you might consider giving away some of your “failures” to young children as a toy or older children to inspire them to consider carving/sculpting as a hobby or even artistic career.

Yess, I think that a great motto! Good luck! I try to follow my own advice too :)

Keep going, we all start somewhere! Don't give up, you can learn anything, it's just practice. Thanks for the info about the oil!
A great mantra to stick to when learning a new craft as it’s so easy to feel useless and forget why you’re doing it in the first place!!
Absolutely!
A good ol' pile of sh, erm, failure, yep!
I still have the first carving I've ever done. It's great to look back.
Great video as usual 😁
Thank you, Jeff :) Ohh, I think I have a very first carving somewhere too... I shall find it!
Well done, I really enjoy your humor! I'm going to include this video in the next episode of Wood Carving Weekly.

I agree with you! Perfection is probably an illusion anyway... It's all a process and a journey
I love this so much

Maybe you can use a dremmel on the incomplete hardwood projects like the lizard.
True!
"Maybe he drowned"...😳😅
Great video! I like all the different topics you touch on. Any plans for more tutorial videos?
Hey, thank you 😊Coming very soon, hopefully!

Hello there! Nice vlog ❤
Hey, thanks for watching 🙃
Hello. How do you sharpen your knife? It's so shiny lol.
Hey, I use leather strop and some green compound (chromium oxide I think it's called)
SHE WAS SO BUSY 😢😢😢😢😢
Yess, I feel sorry for bothering her 😄so many insects to catch, places to see...

this is a good idea, thank you! These things could find a new purpose for sure
Please don’t kill and eat your beautiful chicken 🐓
Oh no, I would never do that! Hopefully she will live long and happily
