My pleasure! It's been a video I've wanted to make for a long time, so I'm glad I was finally able to make it happen :) If you don't mind me asking, when you signed up for the LLM program, was the intent to try and find a job practicing law in the U.S. upon graduation or was the plan to come to the U.S. for a year and return to practice law in another country?
@@AngelaVorpahl Sure! For me personally, my anticipation is to find a job and practice in the U.S. after graduation - although as Ana shared, there are road blocks ahead.

Hii.. can you tell me your experience to find a job? I’m a green card holder planning to start llm in this fall. I’m very stressed about the perspective of not finding a job after graduate and pass the bar.
I’m a teaching assistant for a LLM (foreign student LLM) legal writing class. All of these students are licensed in other countries. They will earn their LLM degrees after one year of legal study in USA and then sit for the bar. But many of the students are not prepared and have a far lower pass rate on the bar compared to JD students. I think it’s a failure of the LLM “system.” Many of them never take Contracts, Property, Evidence, among others. I’m not sure a solution to this issue. They take a longer bar-prep course, but that doesn’t seem to bear much fruit. I think a better program should be available. Thoughts?
Hi Ethan, thanks for sharing your experience in that world, you definitely don't hear about this problem talked about in the larger legal education arena. I am by far an expert in this field, but one thought that came to mind is possibly some form of "pre-LLM" study regimen (or prep course) that functions as a "pre-Bar" course so that they get introduced to the concepts before they start and a second time when they're studying for the Bar. In your experience, have you seen many LLMs find full-time legal positions in the U.S. after completing the LLM program? I feel like those percentages also don't get get talked about much, and they're the ones I get asked about by international students most often.
Angela Thank you very much for accepting my request for this topic. It was very helpful. The questions accomodated comprehensiveness. I appreciate the time put by you & the guest speaker.
NY certainly used to allow foreign practitioners to take the bar exam without a US degree (not sure if they still do). A lot of my friends ended up in NY City that way. Agree with your guest re transferring from US to (say) Australia. Some serious bridging courses are necessary (which almost add to to doing a completely new law degree). Great video Angela!
Thanks so much! I have zero experience with LLM programs and the foreign lawyer licensing process, so I definitely wanted to try to get some information out there for people in need of it :)
Should also say; most of the people who went there were actually doing work for a US firm but in relation to transactions involving Australia (and that's how they got the job).
@@brentandamandaturnbull1660 That's still really cool! I know positions like that are possible, but I've heard so few stories where foreign lawyers actually get hired by U.S. law firms so that's exciting!

Great interview... 1. What's the recommended list of top 10 LLM in California and New York? 2. Do you guys recommend an online LLM program and then apply for work visa to practice your knowledge after those 2 or 1 year study?
Hey Mario! I'm so glad you got a lot out of the video. I definitely recommend reaching out to Anna with your questions, or another great resource is Talitha Krenk @talithakrenk on IG!
To be honest, I don't know how true (or not) that is. It would make sense that JD candidates don't have the same barrier or assumption of "not understanding the U.S. legal system" since you would have just gone through the traditional 3-year law school program. But in terms of the work authorization piece, I imagine it's still very competitive to try and find a legal employer to sponsor you for a full-time lawyering job. I don't personally have experience with this process so I couldn't say for sure, but to get a more personal take on it, I would recommend reaching out to the law schools you're interested in and asking career services what they have generally seen with job opportunities for international J.D. students and if they could put you in touch with a recent graduate so that you could get a sense for the process on a more personal level.
Personally this is heartbreaking as i was seriously considering to apply for 2 years JD from Chicago. But it makes sense. Why would an employer consider a student with Visa hurdles and comparatively not so good english. This is quite informative and to the point. Thanks very much. I was wondering if i can do JD from US on job visa in future if i end up there doing job in other field.
Good question, and the short answer is I'm not sure. I would definitely recommend speaking with an immigration attorney who specializes in domestic work visas so that you can get a full picture of whether it would be possible to transition from work authorization in one industry to another. Feel free to keep us posted on what you find out in case anyone is in a similar position!
Really good question and I honestly don't know! I would love to tell you to research the employment statistics for each LLM program, but they tend to hold those stats very close to the vest (which I think is a huge disservice to you guys). Reach out to Anna, but I would say that I've at least heard anecdotally that the Top 10 LLM programs will at least give you a gold star on your resume to get a job in your home country after graduation, but in terms of getting a job as a lawyer in the U.S., I would literally search alumni of the LLM programs you're considering on LinkedIn and ask what their experience with the hiring process was like (check out my video with Dave Strousberg on how to conduct these informational interviews).
I'm so sorry to hear that, Aishwarya. I wanted to find a way to make sure you guys had as much information as possible so that you can make the absolute best, most informed decision for yourself. Even if getting a law degree in the U.S. isn't in the cards right now, it doesn't mean it will never be or that practicing law in your home country can't be an amazing career too. 💚
You're so welcome! I know this is something that there's not a lot of information about out there, so I'm grateful that Anna was willing to help shed more light on it.
If you're looking for more insight into the 2-year JD program, I would definitely recommend reaching out to students who have gone through it and get a first-hand account of what they thought of it compared to the 3-year JD option. I would first reach out to law schools with 2-year JD programs that you're interested in attending and ask if they would be willing to put you in touch with any of their current or former students who may be willing to share a bit about their experience in the program. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Good question. I'm definitely not an expert on law school scholarships, but from talking to those who are my understanding is that every law school has X thousdands of dollars in scholarship money reserved to attract strong candidates to their law school (mostly determined by LSAT and uGPA). Once that money runs out, they stop giving it out, so that's why it's so powerful to apply early in the admissions cycle (not only to get in but also to have the best shot at scholarship money). So, in answer to your question, I would say "all the time" :)
Dear Angela, do you know law schools in the US that offer top funding for an LLM degree? Can you provide a list? And that is not only about the top 14 schools, right?

Thanks for such an informative video! Have seen quite a few Canadian youtubers studying at T14 law schools, would you say the job prospects for Canadians is more similar to US students, considering there's the TN visa?
Hi Claire, great question and the short answer is I have no idea. 😆 I did work with someone who went to law school in Canada and then got a job in New York, but I also recently coached a Canadian student who is currently attending a U.S. law school and he's having to navigate the visa requirements simply to get a summer associate job. So unfortunately I don't know enough about the visa specifics to be helpful here, but my recommendation would be to reach out to the student services/career services departments of U.S. law schools you're potentially interested in and ask what differences (if any) have they seen in job opportunities for Canadian JD students as compared to international students coming from other countries?
Thanks for the video!!! I really appreciate it. Do I have to go to the United States to study my LLM? I am a certified lawyer in my country Colombia and I work for a law firm based in the United States but also has offices in Colombia. I work as a Legal assistant here and have learned a lot about American immigration law. Can I do my LLM online from a US based university and go to the country just to take the Bar?
Hi Michel! Great question. I'm honestly not sure if an online LLM program exists, but give it a google and/or reach out to Anna Ivey and she might have some good insight for you (her contact info is in the description)!
I'm not sure! The first place I'd start to look are large Chinese law firms that work with U.S. law firms or clients, and reach out to do informational interviews with lawyers who work in those practice areas (in the country where you're interested in working). You can ask them about the path they took to get where they are. Check out my video on "informational interviews" to get you started!
Good question! My guess would be the answer is that in terms of admissions rigor (because you have a GPA from a U.S. university) you wouldn't have to worry about GPA translation or equivalency determinations, which will be helpful. In terms of the competitiveness for finding a job after graduation from law school, I honestly don't know but possibly the answer would be that you would encounter similar roadblocks if you would need a law firm to sponsor you for work authorization. I would definitely reach out to Anna, though, to get a more accurate answer!

I have done Bachelor’s in Economics Hons from India(3years), Bachelor’s in Law from India(3 years), LL.M. from the UK(1 year) I am now married to a U.S. citizen and very closer to Permanent Residency. NY Bar in the evaluation process rejected my Indian Law degree of not being sufficient in durational, substantial aspect. What is the best path for me now? Should I appeal to the NY Bar considering I already have an LLM degree from the UK, so I should be directly allowed to sit for the bar exam? I am in a huge dilemma. Any suggestions or thoughts would be really appreciated!
Hi Gunjan! Another resource to check out is @talithakrenk. She's a former student of mine and coaches international law students and foreign-trained lawyers through the J.D. and LLM processes. You can connect with her on IG or UA-cam!
Hi! So there tends to be a consensus that there are more laywers than lawyering jobs available, but I don't know that I actually agree with that. That being said, your very first job out of law school will always be the toughest to get because you're brand new to the profession and don't have any marketable skills yet. One of the things that you should definitely check out before you decide on a law school is the ABA employment stats, which is just a one-sheet PDF that shows you what percentage of the most recent graduating class found full-time jobs within 10 months of graduating. And I would recommend doing this for any law school you might be interested in -- just google "UT law employment stats" (for example). Let me know if that makes sense! Angela

You can ask them about the path they took to get where they are. Check out my video on "informational interviews" to get you started!
So Angela! What motivated you in becoming a Lawyer? Why do you do what you do? Is it about the money, power, prestige...all three?
Oh My Goodness !! It just break me apart ... But what if , i will do my undergraduate from U.S and then apply for J.D ???
Good question! My guess would be the answer is that in terms of admissions rigor (because you have a GPA from a U.S. university) you wouldn't have to worry about GPA translation or equivalency determinations, which will be helpful. In terms of the competitiveness for finding a job after graduation from law school, I honestly don't know but possibly the answer would be that you would encounter similar roadblocks if you would need a law firm to sponsor you for work authorization. I would definitely reach out to Anna, though, to get a more accurate answer!
What about for LLM PROGRAM for international Lawyers that are American Citizens? Thank you
If you want to get an LLM as a U.S. law student, there's no barrier to doing that!
Question :I am currently studying for my LSAT I wanted to study out in The U.K. But speaking with someone yesterday they say my U.S. college credits will not be transferable . I don’t mind studying in the States and taking the Bar Exam , but I will like to study or workout in the U.K. How do I go about that ?

Hello mam! I am from nepal and recently I completed my high school in the field of bio science, but I want to join the course of international law in USA. Is it possible for me to go there and retrive my bachelor degree in the field of international law?
Iam from india and now Iam joining in BBA LLB interested program after that i wanted to study in US and settle in US by completing LLM is this possible mam
Hi Angela.
Please if anyone can suggest or guide me!
I have done Bachelor’s in Economics Hons from India(3years), Bachelor’s in Law from India(3 years), LL.M. from the UK(1 year)
I am now married to a U.S. citizen and very closer to Permanent Residency.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be really appreciated!

hello angela . I always hear that it is so hard to find a job as a lawyer . is it true
Angela

Mam please tell me that corporate counsel or in house counsel required to give bar exam for work in a private company.
Do the same limitations apply for international students who’ve got an undergraduate degrees in the US?

Can a non US citizen become a judge in US?
I actually don't know the answer to that question! It may also depend on the type of job and at what level (e.g. local, state, federal).
I’ve done 5 years of law school outside the US and on my way to Permanent Residency in the US, and look to live in the US long term, I’m still confused between the LLM and JD. Thoughts?
Hi Mariam! Good question. I'm definitely not an expert in this area, but I know a coach who is!
