- The doner kebab is one of the most popular snacks in Germany, but it originates in Turkey. So how did the kebab find its way to Germany and became so successful?
There are differences between Turkish and German kebabs. In Turkey, it’s often served with rice and vegetables on a plate. However, Germans usually like to have their kebab in pita bread stuffed with vegetables and topped with different sauces. Several Turkish immigrants claim to have invented the German version - the “Döner”.

Greetings from Turkey to Germany. Döner in Turkey is actually more concentrated on meat, your döner versions seems a lot more colorful and I'm sure they are very tasty too !

I don't know why someone would argue doner is originated in Berlin. Doner itself is a Turkish word that means rotating.

I was stationed in Germany 🇩🇪 for four years when I was in the military and the döner kebab shops were the go-to places for a quick and cheap meal. The fries were just crispy enough and delicious too! I miss those days!

It's great to see a look into the history, something I researched myself years ago. Like many places in the world, the Doner has taken a journey to different versions. In Canada, you see it called Shawarma which is usually more of a Syrian/Lebanese style, and the origin of the word Shawarma comes from the Turkish word Cevirme- to turn. Then we have the Greek version called the Gyro. Mexico has the Taco Pastor which they adapted from Lebanese migrants. We even have the likes of David Chang trying to use the method of grilling meat as it rotates making some Korean-style meat. One thing in Canada that people on the East Cost in Newfoundland - Nova Scotia like is this super sweet white sauce that in my opinion is awful and masks the taste but the drunk evening eaters love it. Obviously, it's just a filler for them as their taste buds are dead by 2am drinking. The Iskender kebab which you see in the video in Turkey is the one on the plate placed on top of bread with some butter drizzled on top and some yogurt on the side is the one that I enjoy the most, but it's not cheap and not for the everyday meal like they have in Germany or the rest of the world. @@freudvibes10 No he was a restaurant owner from Bursa who had the last name of Iskender and he took the spit which was laying down as in Cag kebab ( from Erzurum) and put it up like you see. today. The family still has many restaurnats in Turkey and produce their own meat yogurt, butter, tomato sauce they use in their restaurants

Here in the Philippines, shawarma is more well known than doner kebab. Shawarma is one of my favorite street food.
It's kinda concerning how many Germans I've met who are convinced that döner is a German invention. And NO döner between bread is not a German thing. It's centuries old lol. Döner both served on a plate in restaurants. But its also sold as a bread sandwhich.

I'm german myself and I agree that turkish cuisine is far superior to german cuisine overall, however saying we have "nothing edible" is a bit harsh and uncalled for, don't you think?
Turks make this food for hundreds of years, first it was cooked horizontally, than in the Turkish city of Bursa, it was made vertically because they discovered this way the juices stay on the meat instead of dripping on the fire. In Erzurum city in Turkey the first horizontal way is still being made and it's very good, too.

no we have döner like the one in germany, also it originated in bursa not istanbul. mostly its either sold as a sandwich or wrapped in flatbread actually. the one served on rice is not that common.
I was about to say the same thing. 8 out of 10 döner meals eaten in Turkey are prepared as wraps. Even in the video, when the German guy is sitting in a döner restaurant, that red place named Öncü is a quite big fast food chain based around selling chicken döner with sauce in a wrap.
Yes the entire documentary is going along the thought of the German public that it´s a "German Invention" even though bread originated from the Middle East and so did Döner but Turks were not able to put it into bread until a Turk emigrated to Germany it´s absolutely ridiculous and even in the picture they showed when the self proclaimed "Döner Historian" spoke you could see there was no place to sit so where would they put the food ? Not on a plate that´s for sure !
I am a German, and I am sure that the Turks have eaten döner meat in some form of bread before. So basically a Döner kebab.
However it happened. I ate countless döner kebabs in my life and I am a happier person for it =)

I miss germany, was stationed there over a decade ago. Will go back someday. The doner is definitely a great thing to eat, only a few euro and it definitely hit the spot every time.
It originated in Turkey. It was already being served on bread too or you could enjoy it on a plate.
Also served as gyro in Greece and Syria as sharma before Germany even entered in the picture

In Turkey, they also have a version called tombik döner, which is similar to a döner kebab, where the döner is put in bread instead of on a plate.

I am from Malaysia. In 2001 I followed a 4-month course at DSE Manhheim. During that period I had the opportunity to visit several places including Frankfurt, Berlin, Boon. In all those places, when I'm hungry, doner kebab is the choice to fill my stomach. It satisfies my taste.
Around 2018 I went to Turkey several times. More specifically, to Isparta. Kebabs are everywhere in Turkey. Delicious and appetizing.
However, for me, as an outsider, Doner Kebab German is closer to my heart. The way the German doner kebab is presented, very practical, not excessive, and among the cheapest food in Germany.
Just my opinion.

The dillema is this: the döner meat in Turkey is soooo much better BUT they don't use sauce like Cacık and you can't pick the ingredients on your own. The best döner would be German-Turkish style with meat from Turkey

It's just, having it in a bread is a cheap street version. A good kebab is astonishing on plate with some sides. So people enjoy it more like that.
Turkish people literally eat everything with bread. They're crazy for thinking that the turks never had the idea to put kebap meat into bread, before arriving in Germany.

@@Lynn4 Because it was probably made to suit German’s palate… it’s like how hard shell tacos are American despite tacos coming from Mexico. Slight changes make a difference, so you can’t claim it as the original, but we all still recognize where the food originally came from.
Doner kebabs are popular in the UK but it's hard to get anything decent. A German company has opened a few stores in London and they are really good (German style). Best kebab I ever had was in Tokyo.

I find GDK can be hit and miss with the quality and their whole mcdonaldsy corporate chain vibe also detracts from the experience. For the real thing, I recommend Tavuuk's Gemüse Döner on Bateman Street in Soho, London. They're very good and there's now another one round the corner from them on Dean Street called Checkpoint but I haven't tried theirs yet.

Shawarma, gyros, döner kebab, pastor all have the same roots :-) It's just about nuances in types of meat and spices and herbs, fine tuned to the local people's taste.
they come to mexico at ottoman times. so taco is copy of Turkish döner kebab. btw we not always eat on plate the guy saying lie or not wanna show it. most people eating with bread.

I am surprised many Germans still don't know it's a Turkish dish. The German one is just Subway'ized version. Within this century Döner will be the number one fast food on the world.
Very popular here on Switzerland 🇨🇭. Most every small pizza place serves Donner as well.

the og doner kebab guy shows a way he creates the sandwich - the way he does it, with yoghurt base and parsley and onion salad, is very much something more akin to what we find in turkey.
I'm Pakistani but I really love Turkish food. And ice cream as well.
Here in Canada in Halifax (which is in a province called Nova Scotia) the donair (that's how it's spelled here) got so popular, it was declared the food of Halifax... very interesting.
You know you could said that Halifax is in the Southeastern part of Canada since most people don't know where is Nova Scotia if they aren't Canadian. But yeah, it interesting how far this Mediterranean dish had travel. Used to eat them back in Saigon when I was a kid and thought it was some strange variant of Banh Mi. Delicious stuff

I used to get these while at University in Oxford. There were amazing!! Although, they were spicy so I imaging that was an Indian recipe addition. In any event, Doner kebabs are nothing but love in food format! Too bad I haven't seen any where I am in the USA... Just in NYC. Great video!

In Zambia we call it sharwama. It's rare to find grilled meat. Chicken kebab is the most common. But it's delicious.

0:57 actually this is not true. I never eat döner like this in Turkey. Mostly We put döner in turkish bread. This type of döner is not common. But I know some places sell it like this but not common.
The last time I was in Hamburg, I tried a plated Doner Kebab with bread, rice and all the sauce that I wanted. Because it looked small in the picture. But when it came, OMG, the serving was I think good for 2-3! And it tasted so good! I wasn't able to eat it all.

As a Turk myself I prefer the doner kebabs in Australia where I grew up. The meat they use in Turkey is as you can see more authetnic but I just enjoy the beef they use in Australia more. However, nothing comes close to tavuk durum (Chicken kebab meat) that they serve in Turkey ontop of rice, it's so good sometimes I just day dream about it.

The German version is absolutely delicious, we are bit jealous on Germans in the Netherlands . Believe or not sometimes we drive all the way to Düsseldorf for döner kebab 😅👌

I think it's nice that our national dish is an adapted version of a dish from another part of the world. That is how integration should work, make something new that is beloved.

Forth, Döner is extremely common, 700 million+ are sold each year, so every German eats around 8.5 Döners a year. You may as well call it a national dish.

Pretty dumb that people in Germany would not know where doner kebab comes from. It is a widespread dish in the eastern Mediterranean. Gyros in Greece, Doner Kebab in Turkey, Shawarma in the Levant regions. All prepared on a spit in the same way, with some variation of meat type.
But all of their origin is Doner Kebab from Turkey.
We know that the style of the meat is from Turkey but there is a good chance that the meat in the bread was invented from a turk in germany. Germany is the Land of the bread.

After several generations, people forget where certain foods come from because they evolve to please the local bud tastes. I remember watching a show about Americans living abroad where these college-age students living in the Netherlands had a party and served their friends "American (as in the USA) Food." That was Mexican tacos and pizza. We were like, really? They were appropriating those two foods as American.
It depends on what kind of 'mexican tacos' and pizza they were referring to, hard shell tacos are mexican-american and many pizza variants sold internationally are imitating US style: as opposed to Neapolitan.
Not to mention that someone calling a dish "American food" doesn't mean it originated in the United States.
@@goosenuggets9693 - I don't know about the pizza, but the tacos were soft, and do-it-yourself Buffett style. They didn't look very authentic at all, but they were in Europe and it might be difficult to get the Mexican seasonings there. 🤣
One only needs to.look at dishes in Italy before and after Columbus. Several ingredients associated with various current regions never existed before 1492. Interesting how Italians disliked the recipes and flavor combinations of the tribes in the Americas, but then created dishes with tomatoes, potatoes, and corn that are thought to be thoroughly Italian. The French have pilfered from other countries, changed a recipe a little or not at all, slapped a French name on it and voila! Everyone from then on assumed that food item was invented in France.

I watched a European cooking show and the new thing there is "Kale." In another show, a young woman was peeling an avocado with a potato peeler. 🤣

This discussion completely overlooks the other varieties found in the former Ottoman Empire like Greek gyros and Lebanese Shawarma.

@@siyahbeyaz9527 It's about that logic yes. I mean i don't call the hot dog german just because the americans used a german sausage. For that reason i don't call the Döner (like it is served in Europe) turkish just because the turkish style meat is used.
Nobody says that the Döner style meat is not turkish. That is definitely turkish, but the Döner served like in Berlin is not.

I first had a Shawarma while in Saudi Arabia, in 1991, made a little differently depending on the location I was at. When arriving back in the United States I looked for them in the Midwest where I was stationed and from. Closet thing was the Greek Gyros. But then in 1992 I got stationed in Germany and was introduced to the Turkish Doner Kebab, which was nearly exactly like the Saudi Arabian Shawarma! Besides the wonderful German food, the Doner Kebab was the next favorite!!
Shawarma comes from the Turkish word Çevirme which has a similar meaning to Döner (Rotating) in Turkish.

Over 22 years ago I had my first Doner Kebab when I was with the US Army, my mouth is watering from watching this video, I may have even finished!

For polish people kebab is a part of daily life, you can get kebab anywhere, big city, small town, village, i got kebab like 2km away from me while living on countryside, in 8k resident city near me you got 4 of them.
Everyone has his own favourite version of it, some choose chicken, some mutton, some mix. Some choose mild sauce, some spicy, some mix. And oh boy Pita, Tortilla, Bun!

I konow you area going tosay that you already eat the kebab in tht way but is false, and theres is a wat to prove it.....tradition, if you sit to luch in a house with turkish people is almost imposible they make a kebab with their bread because they dont eat in that way, but if you go to Mexico and seat to eat with mexican, at least 7 from 10 men are going to make a taco to eat.
We hace the tortilla even beafore de otaman empire and it is made from corn, latter lebanse people brought the bread and we use it to make burritos, but never replace the corn tortilla.
In the end puttin the kebab in a burrito shape is modern, and people got it from Mc donalds (The exist since1950 around the world and their first dish was exactly burritos).....
Döner in Germany is seen more like an after party snack, hanging out with friends etc. Döner in Türkiye is more like a proper meat dish that you can enjoy with family or with friends but you can also eat it on the go. Both are OK for everybody, as long as you try not to change it's name, like the Greeks did. E.g. Gyros

In Ecuador it's a Persian dish, it's called shawarma and it's served with tortilla and Greek yogurth. So many versions, but the basic meat is so delicious !!!

Shawarma is the Arab pronunciation of the Turkish word "Çevirme". The food is Turkish not German of Persian

I’m nearly 50 and when I was a child we were eating doner in bread like sandwich, so it was not invented in Berlin or by a Berliner. Turkish food and all types are found in Turkiye.

When I was younger (in the 1990s) my friends and I weekly went for a Döner Kebab in our free hours from school here in Vienna.
In those days you still got a proper Döner Kebab made from lamb or mutton. Nowadays you mostly get chicken, turkey or other cheap meat that just doesn't work with the concept. I refuse such Kebabs categorically as they just taste bland, bland, bland. Since it is very hard to find the original version, I unfortunately get it very rarely. 😠😢

Doner kebab is originated from Turkey, but don't understand why German version is very different?
The German style kebab is hard to match. I like going to Turkish restaurants to eat their original dishes but growing up in Germany with a broad variety of decent kebabs, I prefer this version. I remember the first place I’ve bought a kebab was owned by an Arabic guy using veil and didn’t use red cabbage. As a child it was a bit odd but today I’d love to get this guy back from the metal factory to reopen his store.
I would say the Turkish version is better but to each their own.

I would also add that some people even claim that kebab come from Greece. In France, we often call that "un grec" (a Greek).
Fun fact: Doner kebab was first made in Northern Pakistan and the armies of the conquering Alexander the Great brought it back to Macedonia, Greece and Turkey where it became very popular
