White Guy Shocks African Market by Speaking Their Language
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2020
- I’ve been spending the last two or three weeks studying Wolof, a West African language spoken in Senegal, the Gambia, and Mauritania, and today I’ve come to Harlem to try it out in NYC’s Little Senegal neighborhood, including at the Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market and the great Senegalese restaurant Le Baobab on 116th street.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to try Senegalese cuisine, I would highly recommend checking out the ceebu jën (also spelled thieboudienne) here, which is Senegal’s national dish! It’s also the origin of the popular Nigerian and Ghanaian dish “jollof rice” - the word “jollof” actually originally refers to Wolof!
I learned by chatting with Awa on Italki for 1-2 hours per day. If you’re interested in learning Wolof or French (she’s a native French speaker as well), I would highly recommend booking a lesson with her - she’s an absolutely amazing teacher! www.italki.com/teacher/6971240

The biggest respect you can give people is to speak to them in their own language. Awesome man. Sadly here in the UK English people visit other lands and get angry when they are not addressed in English, but then these same people in the UK get angry when visitors here also speak in their own language.
Same here in the USA
Yes it's very common to hear my fellow Americans angrily say "SPEAK ENGLISH" !!!!
I agree that everyone should try to speak the language when in that country...but there is nothing wrong with speaking to friends and family in your first learned language...especially in a so called "free country". Many Asian countries are more reserved and humble so seeing a white guy speaking a language that even many Chinese struggle with is not only surprising but also very admirable.

If you're American and making a comment like that I would like to introduce the word irony to you
@@ilikebrowncars9692 yikes your prejudice is showing
Shocking @Jacob Price
@@ilikebrowncars9692 it was a joke. No need to be rude.
@@ilikebrowncars9692 I would like to introduce you to the word joke. Definition: Something Kai Keeling doesn’t understand and puts other people down for.
This was truly heartwarming. 💕💕
What an awesome time we live in. Thanks for sharing these videos.
If someone randomly spoke my native language I would assume they’re Feds
A guy at our corner store is from Pakistan and he is teaching me a bit of Urdu. I asked for smokes in urdu and he smiled at that and we been cool ever sense lol
That was f’ing funny buddy. Lol. I laughed out loud
@@weebey1409 Hes really a sweet guy or a fantastic actor lol
America.
Osman, kaifa haluk? Scared yet...;) Ameriki tatakalum Arabic? Have a nice day.
The thing is, it’s not just about learning the language, it’s also having an ear for the language. And yet he manages to pick it up so quickly!! It’s incredible
Pisses me off, I’m jelly.
@@elitesucka how is this relevant to learning new languages fast?
@@blank5189 It isn’t.
@Gerr Gerring His ear is definitely the most impressive part. Few people seem to slow down when he gets them to repeat what they say. They either repeat or simplify the response, the speed doesn't change.
This is so different from the reactions at the Nigerian store.
Love that video!!
Once you know HOW to learn languages, the way languages work, and get good at learning them, you just have to keep learning, keep the love of it. I think this is fantastic.
One of the only guys that would have no trouble marrying a woman that speaks another language. Give him 2 weeks and he will have the fathers blessing at dinner lol.
LMFAOO
Father would probably be correct - his willingness to make the effort to learn their language alone is a very positive sign.

So right! When he goes back to that clothing shop, he’ll be marrying that guy’s daughter right in the back of the shop if he’s not careful. Forget dinner, that guy was READY to marry this boy up into the family 😂🤣
😂😂😂😂
Xiaoman is dedicated AF. He's willing to learn a new language just to haggle a better price on some merch. XD
I'm convinced he will learn an extinct language just for a snack
Learning languages for a UA-cam video
I think it's the other way around. He is willing to buy stuff he dont need just to communicate with the vendors in their own language.
He would make mr Krabs proud
@@GuranPurin 🤣
I love to see people try to understand & to communicate. As one of those who believe that languages reflect histories and cultures, this video is really wow. Thank you~~
Okay...this video was suggested and I watched it... don't normally do that with videos unlike my normal brands. And I loved it!
Thumbs up and a comment (both of which I also rarely do)! But I'm sorry....I will still ask for no further recommendations from you. It's not personal....but the like and comment should push the video and subsequently the channel a little farther.
Keep loving those around you. You're an inspiration!
the first woman is just focused on the sale, not even finding it strange this random white guy is speaking Wolof...
Right 🤣
I was surprised they weren't more impressed. How many people are learning Wolof as a second language? Probably something you never come across in new york
@@littleripper312 turns out people only speak one language $$$
@@littleripper312 my thoughts exactly. I speak Wolof and I would’ve gone crazy if he came up to me like that haha
@@Moosedeuce exactly 💯
I find it amazing !
