Heavy Metal 2000 is a very mature revenge/adventure movie when it came out in 2000. Also, Michael Ironside is in it and he voiced The Main Antagonist of the film back then.

It's a scandal that critics disliked this movie. Twenty years later, the animation looks so gorgeous. 3D animation still has goofy-looking humans, but the humans here are so expressive.

Its mostly fails in the USA for the most part. The US just has a large bias for animation, animation is for children so the stories aren't as good. Which is so weird, like outside of disney right the 60s, 70s and 80s were full of experimental animation that was targeted at older audiences and movies were Family Movies(tm). We kinda lost the Family movie (tm) movies that were just good stories that the whole family can enjoy together. Not just small children. Also there are so many amazing animated movies from other parts of the world (not just japan) that are really adult and just cinematic af. There's a lot of really good french animated movies /short films that are very adult in tone and talk about very serious topics. Animation i feel can express emotion better than traditional filming.
Other than that stuff, some people just don't connect to animation. Like they can't fully immerse themselves into the story or they find the animation distracting, or they just don't like 2D. Ive met people like this in person, a middle ground i found is stop motion animation, since its more real.
Its like with books, lots of people say they don't like books.
Edit: also i really hate the whole "its for kids so its not good" mind set. Like yeah you're not going to fully engage with a movie ment for toddlers but most kid movies are actually really nice and a decent story with good music. Honestly a good movie at the end of the day is a movie thats not boring and you like it for whatever reason.

I saw an interesting take on video games becoming more mature (like with zelda twilight princess, etc) and I think it also applies to animated movie.
So basically, early on in video games (and animated films) the majority of the audience was children. Which means for a more mature version to hit the same kinds of numbers, that audience needs to age up into it. So a mature version would likely only be successful 20-30 years after it is a big boom for kids. I think that is the case here and supports what you are saying. Now there are alot of people in their 20-40s that grew up watched animated films, so more mature and nuanced versions have a large audience to tap into.

You missed out on some details that are still vivid in my memory from childhood - like the fact that Sinbad left Syracuse to become a pirate when he saw Proteus's arranged fiancée out of jealousy and that was his whole backstory, or the fact that Eris framed Sinbad BECAUSE she knew Proteus would demand the right of substitution (it was Proteus she wanted dead, not Sinbad), or the fact that that guy telling the other guy to pay up was a RECURRING gag. One thing I do NOT remember is the arctic scene, I'm totally drawing a blank there, it doesn't even look familiar - my brain says that they went from the anglerfish straight to the edge of the world. In any case, I do remember loving this movie, like Treasure Planet and Atlantis, and definitely put in the same category as those movies.

Titan A.E. failing was a tragedy, because not only was it not a bad movie (it's flawed, but not bad), but it also killed Don Bluth's career, and I absolutely love Don Bluth films, with The Land Before Time in particular being one of my comfort movies. Atlantis is probably one of my favorite animated Disney films, so that movie being a failure was also a travesty. And Road to El Dorado? Probably one of the funniest and most quotable animated films, period.
I feel like we as an audience were needlessly harsh on animated films that came out at this time. I'm not sure what it was around 2000-2003 that caused so many animated films to flop, but I guess audience tastes were more towards live action at the time since it was mostly adults going to see movies and animation was seen as only for kids at the time. It's only now that the kids of the time have grown up that these movies are getting recognition for actually being good.

Hi ,i'm from the places sinbad story is made ,this adaptation toned down the story SOOOOOOOMUCH
-Sinbad is not a pirate, but a merchant from bagdad, the story started as him eyeing a ship that was about to sail and they were delivering goods to sell ,so he decides to join them to you know get some money ,so uh the thing backfired badly ,and none survived outside of him ,yeah his first adventure was him in a near death experience
-the gaint bird pokemon is actually a gaint Phoenix(or not i don't remmber)the story is so good and is my favorite ,sinbad landed in an island full of gaint gems ,he took opportunity to take them but the brid eats these gems so the bird accidentally took sinbad to his nest ,i can't describe in details the stakes but after another near death experience he managed to take the bird's egg and escape
-there is also another story that i like of him also experiencing a live threatening situation with a one eyed cyclop that eat humans ,it wasn't in the movie (it's gory but not really)it's also my favorite
-there's alot of stories about sinbad and in alot of them people don't really survive, and i don't think there was a story like the one in the movie ,the stories could be material for so many sequels (sindbad is really the og Indiana jones before IndianaJones)i hope you go read them yourself ,(sorry for the rant i just love his stories, and this dreamworks ver was my childhood crush 😂)

idk how common a thought this is (I'm also only 5 minutes into the video so maybe he brings this up at some point) but hear me out-
This movie would've worked WAY better as an animated series.
A colorful cast of characters? Check.
A menagerie of menacing monsters? Check.
It would also help with continuity errors such as the ship being damaged and repaired offscreen and between scenes, because there'd actually be time to explore those down moments a bit further!
    Thoughts?

It would have been cool if at each challenge Eris gave them, one of the crew members died, like a main crew member and when they finally encounter Eris for the final boss battle, she reanimates those crew members and Sinbad has to face each one (or just creates a fake body like she did when she disguised herself as Sinbad, because I don't know how well "puppeting a dead corpse" would go down with test audiences). Whether it be in a physical showdown or a psychological battle of wills and overcoming guilt, having Sinbad face his crew, his friends, that died on a quest that could have been avoided if he chose differently would have been a HUGE emotional climax for the movie. You get the character deaths, you get the emotional growth, you get a completion of character arches, you get DEPTH of characters and get to see just how connected they were. That would have been cool.

When i was a kid and saw this movie my opinion hasn't changed a bit about the movie, i still love it, and it's definitely a fun movie, but now as an adult i can see what things were missing in the movie, to make it from a 6.5/10 to an 8.5 or 9 /10.
    1. Minimum extra half hour of time for the movie to add necessary things.
    2. In the opening parts of the movie, add a few more words about that Book of Peace to have a bigger hint for the importance of that book, and later to get more details during the king's speech in Syracuse about the events that made this book so special to these kingdoms, and why the book changes residence between those united kingdoms that the book protects.
    3. That at the beginning of the movie Proteus says more about his friendship between him and Sinbad, so that we know why it means so much to him, and not just "a long time ago we were wants friends", and they act like they haven't seen each other for a week, and when Sinbad is coming to Syracuse we should see a flashback of him and Proteus when they were friends, just making that connection that they didn't explain well enough in the movie, and that Sinbad doesn't remember why he left his friend, and he says this to Kale before they sailed close to Syracuse, that it was a long time ago, and later a few hours (of course their hours) in the movie that Marina is coming to Syracuse with her escort, and during the evening Proteus would like to introduce Sinbad to her, like in the movie, and that is when Simbad remembers, in that moment why he left in the past.
    4. That the disappearance of the Book of Peace show that it has more visible consequences, which can be shown more and that it should be more emphasized, why the Book of Peace is so important, and that for example, the problem of the book must be solved quickly, and that they can give simbad only 10 days, because in order to possibly find a replacement for the book, they need to do preparations, and that 10 days is the most they can give.
    5. Eris definitely could have had more scenes, and we could have seen more of her personality that they decided to cut, and of course there should be some human victims in the movie, so that the risks and attention were really noticed more, and the best places for this would be with the sirens and with that white bird.
If those things were changed and added to the movie it would really be a much better movie, although that's just my opinion, if anyone wants something to just then add it, or what you don't agree with? I'm really interested in other people's opinions and how you feel about my opinions?

This movie, along with Treasure Planet, are the 2 most-remembered/loved movies from my childhood. If they were going to make a live-action remake that's true to the original, I would buy out the theater and give away tickets just to spread the love around

If you haven't already, check out the 2D animated Clone Wars series from the 2000s. The most adrenaline-inducing on-screen Star Wars experience any kid from that time has ever seen to date.

I remember this movie, still love it. Amazing characters, animation and soundtrack. As a kid, I absolutely LOVED Michelle Pfeiffer as the antagonist she was one of my favourite villains even as a kid. I’m still obsessed with Eris because she scared me but I also love her character.

I personally cant believe i missed this film, i love all those, not the best-known animated films. Im even quite proud that at least one of my daughters also found a love for animated films/shows and also really likes the not so popular ones.
Also I must have been soooo jaded as a kid, but falling in love with horror films from 3y old probably does that. But as a parent now I have never looked at films that are for kids and adults and thought omg my child can't see that sexy woman ir ooohhhhhh noooooooo someone died. It's part of everyday life, get over it.

I used to watch this movie all the time on VHS as a kid. The siren scene, the battle with Articuno, Tartarus, and the axe breaking were my favorite prts. Looking back the plot is pretty weak but, I still think it’s a lot of fun to watch and it has great character devlopment and introspection.
I wish Dreamworks and Disney would make original 2D films again.

This is literally one of my favorite animated movies to ever exist. And brad pitt is awesome so. Its from a time where there was a lot of major gem animated movies that no one watched. Go watch dead space and dantes inferno as well. Both hose movies made like $11 and theyre amazing

I've been WAITING for the day for you to cover this masterpiece. The fact that this bombed at the box office is literally criminal. The 2D animation is so gorgeous and while the story is kind of basic it's still kind of refreshing to see this kind of familiar plot line. Also yes, Sinbad and Proteus' relationship is SO queercoded.

I still haven't seen this film, yet the clips i seen of it, it saddens me that this gem of the late silver age of 2D animation failed. It hurts. Road to El Dorado/Sinbad/Treasure Planet [MY ABSOLUTE FAVORATE #1 Film]/Titan A.E./Atlantis/Princess and the Frog are so good that it makes me at least happy to know 2D hasn't died and there films that still feel like these, the last film that I loved that felt like a return to the silver age was Klaus that was release on Netflix. Sure Christmas movie, but the art and 2D animation was perfect and dark.
Also that makes me happy that Bionic ranked Treasure Planet as S-Tier. That is a fact

The name of the ice bird is called an Anka, pretty much an ice phoenix, and I don’t blame you for calling it a Pokemon since it’s pretty much Articuno, the best of the trio (no, I won’t hear anyone out because you’re wrong).
That aside, yeah the movie remains flawed, but I thoroughly liked it and it was a wonderful movie with plenty of room for sequels. It’s a shame that this was the era when people were switching to crappy 3D animated and Pixar movies. It worked well for Dreamworks, but from Disney I’ve refused to pay and watch any of their 3D trash (with the exception of Tangled).

I havent thought about this movie in probably 10 years, this was one of my absolute favorite movies as a kid I remember watching it so many times over. I was and still am a sucker for pirate themes, this movie might be the reason why my dream job as a kid was a pirate. I'm not usually the type to leave comments but this video unlocked a part of my brain and that made me happy lol. Love ur content especially all the videos about early 2000's animation, keep it up mr. Pig
