He was a cold-blooded killer. That verdict was a disgrace. And so was the junk food excuse. If binging on twinkies and Big Macs turns someone into a murderer there wouldn't be anyone left on the planet.

    The verdict was disgusting.
He targeted them, shot one and went down the hall to the specific office of the other.
He wasn't just shooting into a crowd. He had the state of mind to find his targets. So he obviously was in a clear state of mind.

Diane Fierstein called to him when he passed her door and he said, I have to do something, first as he was headed to Milk's office to murder him. He had just murdered Moscone. He was planned premeditated murder and he planned on killing two more people. He killed himself. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. 🤬

    • @dfuher968

Not to mention, that after they each went down, he bent down, put his gun to their heads and made sure to finish them off.
He took his gun, he loaded it with hollowpoints for maximum damage, he went to City Hall and get a maintenance worker to let him in through a basement window, so he could avoid the metal detectors. He then went to the mayors office, got him alone, shot him, then finished him off execution style. Then went past several other offices to get to Milk and repeated it. This was a premeditated, as Ive ever heard of. I have no idea, how any1 could comtemplate for even a second, that this was anything other than a pre-planned, premiditated assassination.
And ofc, after he was let out in '84, he talked to his own colleague, who he also had surrendered to and confessed to after the murders, and knowing he could not be tried again, he admitted, that it was premeditated, and that he wanted them both dead and 2 more, he named, who he didnt get the chance for shooting.
It is the most outrageous verdict imaginable.

I love how people pretend that there can be two sides when it comes to equality. One side just wants to exist and the other side is literally committed to erasing the other and Dan White was a member of the latter. The fact that cops openly sided with him like they did is more proof that this was significantly more than a case of a guy "snapping" because he was repeatedly emasculated by an "aggressive" gay "agitator" or a snap decision made under duress by a stressed out working man; this was straight up a political assassination like MLK, Malcolm X, Fred Hampton etc etc.

Those jurors made a huge mistake and took away justice from the people of San Francisco. How they could have seen this as someone who just "snapped" is a farce. And then proven it was premeditated years late by the interviewing detective.

Terrible verdict. I dont think that would ever happen today. For some reason, back in those days and previous, your average person couldnt believe that a seemingly normal and good person, could possibly commit haneous crimes. I studied the Jeffrey MacDonald case a lot, and most of his supporters and defense, was that a man who was a doctor, and All American boy, just couldnt do the evil things he was charged with.
I think sadly, society has become numb to violence these days. We have seen outwardly nice and good people commit acts of evil over and over again, to the point that ANY person, from any side of the train tracks, are capable of doing them.

The story was this with Dan White: he was married to a former Catholic nun and had an extremely small child or two. I know he went on to have more children with his wife while incarcerated but not sure how many then.
He had also just opened a baked potato place called One Potato Two at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Pier 39 was being developed then and the site was new and shiny as a tourist extension of Fisherman’s Wharf and a move away from working piers.
One Potato Two served loaded baked potatoes that could be customized with a variety of toppings- that was a trend of the time and pretty novel. Not a full blown restaurant. Not sure if they offered inside seating as I never went and not sure if they offered fries along with fountain drinks. It was mainly a to go place and people walked around the Pier munching on hot potatoes .
The pressures of the business and growing family weighed heavily upon him. He had only just been elected to the Board of Supervisors and was a political novice having never been an elected official before.
Dan Whites’s candidacy came about because of a change in how supervisors were elected.
Previously to his run, supervisors were elected by a citywide vote. The top so many vote getters represented everyone citywide. There was election reform that provided that each neighborhood was represented by someone who lived there as opposed to the elites who ruled the hood.
The district that White represented was working class Italian Catholics, poor blacks who lived in public housing and a smattering of hispanic and Pacific Islanders. He had no political finese and he was unprepared to deal with the backstabbing front stabbing that he felt he was subjected to. He would never have been elected had he been made to run citywide. He was the biggest fish in his tiny piece of pond that but for the change of election tules, he would not have had.
He invited Moscone and Milk to the baptism of his baby and they came. He felt a kinship and they put in an appearance.
He eventually resigned from the board and regretted that decision.
He appealed to Moscone and Milk and they refused to give him back his seat.
      The rest is history.
He was unhinged. He felt betrayed. He was under stress because his family thought he was the man and failure was fatal.
      Unbelievable times
Sorry for the novel- just that I was there at the time and he was my supervisor.

Your'e right about the "backstabbing and frontstabbing" in our city politics... and groin kicking!
I been subject to it recently. What people won't do for money and power here.
My good friend and native San Franciscan said that she read somewhere that the trend in favoritism for young wealthy Asians and Caucasians is "normal" and that we shouldn't be upset about the change, because San Francisco is always changing and now it's our turn to on the outs.
If I could afford to leave I would.
Twenty five years seems to me is what you get here as a young person. After you better get ready for another change, or the city will drive you crazy.

But what is left in my mind..I see the the great smiles on the faces of these two men..showing pride and victory over the great battles they fought and won..

She also was the one who announced the deaths of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Milk. She eventually became Mayor of SF and then the rest is history.

It’s so sad that all this happened. But, Dianne Feinstein handled that moment absolutely professionally. Then she served the City and County of San Francisco (one and the same ) as its mayor for several terms, and then as US Senator for the state of California for 30+ years. Then as now, I am in California, and I am very proud to have had her as my US Senator. It looks like she is going to retire and not run for reelection in 2024. I hope she will get a few years of a well-deserved retirement. Can’t believe that she will be 90 this year!
I’ve often wondered if she would have had a similar career trajectory had these events not happened. She had actually previously been an unsuccessful candidate for mayor of San Francisco. Also, she was the Democratic Party nominee for governor of California in 1990. She was the sitting Mayor of San Francisco at the time. But, she lost the 1990 general election for governor to the Republican nominee, then US Senator, Pete Wilson. When Pete Wilson became governor, he appointed a California state legislator, John Seymour (Republican) to replace him in the U.S. Senate. In 1992, mayor Feinstein became US senator by defeating Senator Seymour in a special election.
Thank you to the person who posted a thumbs up on my earlier, comment about this, but I thought I would expand it a little!

Dawgy; she’s been a zombie for like at least 15 years. Check her trading portfolio. Granted, she handled this particular moment. I’ve lived here my whole life and I believe I have voted for this atrocity. But she sells areas like my part of CA out to rep SF, LA, SD, Sac. It forgets why it runs and her absenteeism is just as much of threat on democracy as _______ party is. If you were honest you’d be embarrassed to be “proud” of this lady. Like I really don’t understand how we worship politicians. They’re human. Many are very fallible.

The People's Temple, and Jones', influence was quite evident in those days.
These politicians never inquired about the People's Temple, even though the rumors of the abuse (physical, emotional, and financial) where known through the offices of City Hall. These politicians knew that one phone call to Jim Jones guaranteed hundreds of people at a rally, or handing out pamphlets, or votes for them. Moscone, Milk, Feinstein, and Brown all supported Jones and his ideas, but became mute and hiding when the suicidal massacre had occurred.

This documentary film is fairly complete, but it downplays the tension between the police and the LGBTQ+ community at the time. Many S.F. policemen were sympathetic to Dan White (a former cop), and when he was taken into custody after the murders of Moscone and Milk, some reportedly “nodded their approval” in his direction, and a few even patted him on the back, as if to say “Good job!”
After the White Night riot at City Hall, the retaliatory attack by policemen (who had reportedly removed their name tags and badges, so that they could not be identified) on the Elephant Walk bar on Castro Street was extremely violent, with cops smashing property and customer’s heads in all directions. It was just good luck that no-one was actually killed. Google “white night riot elephant walk” to see some reports on this event.
