I was 12 when "Dark Side" came out (now 63), but even at that tender age I knew it was a breakthrough album and unlike anything else. My friends and I were OBSESSED with this album, for months we couldn't listen to anything else, we couldn't talk about anything else. I'm not a native English speaker, and my English skills were pretty limited back then, but I researched the lyrics to understand them, and they gave me a sense that it was time to grow up (at the right time, obviously, as I was a preteen). Many people of my generation, myself included, can "play" the entire album note by note inside our heads and can follow each subtle instrument change with matching gestures as we listen to it. This album's impact can't be overstated - there was a reason why it stayed for over 14 years in the ranking of the 200 best-selling albums, and it reportedly still sells 5,000 to 10,000 copies in a slow week, over 50 years later. And it goes without saying that it still sounds fresh and innovative, it doesn't feel like "old music". Now, based on what you said you enjoyed most in this album, I think you'll love the album "Wish You Were Here", especially the opening track, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (parts I-V)". Then "Echoes", from the "Meddle" album. I personally consider "Echoes" Pink Floyd's highest musical achievement, a STUNNING piece that no one else could have made.
Yes, Shine On You Crazy Diamond was one of Pink Floyds work I knew prior and loved a lot! What a cool experience you got to have with this album, thanks so much for sharing & for your other recommendations!
The album "Dark Side of the Moon" revolves around a central theme that binds each of the songs and which is: (What drives people crazy). (BREATHE); If the performance required in life can drive people crazy. (ON THE RUN); If the frantic rush of life can drive people crazy. (TIME); If the fleeting aspect of passing time can drive people crazy. (THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY); If the thought of the inevitable end (death), can drive people crazy. (MONEY); If love, or lack of money can drive people crazy. (US AND THEM); If the abusive hierarchy between color, power or wealth between US AND THEM can drive people crazy. (ANY COLOR YOU LIKE); If the illusion of being able to choose can drive people crazy. (BRAIN DAMAGE); If the fear of losing their mind can drive people crazy. (ECLIPSE); If the fact that our life seems to be limited to, (All that you touch - And all that you see...) can drive people crazy. So be aware that even the brightness of the sun may be eclipsed by the Dark Side of the Moon.
@@lipby Yes. The beauty of DSOTM is that it can mean what we need it to mean. Not saying your wrong. I actually think your description is more precise and accurate to what the band was trying to convey.
My recommendation would be to go in this order: Wish You Were Here Piper At the Gates Of Dawn (along with the singles Arnold Layne and See Emily Play) A Saucerful Of Secrets More (an optional album, imo. It has a couple gems) Ummagumma Atom Heart Mother Meddle (this is where literally everything forward is gold) Live At Pompeii (1972) Obscured By Clouds Animals The Wall The Final Cut A Momentary Lapse Of Reason Division Bell (if you elect to do it again) PULSE (concert, along with On the Turning Away from the Delicate Sound Of Thunder concert) The Live 8 reunion of the classic lineup The Endless River as the band's final goodbye.
The Beatles and the engineers at Abbey Road really wrote the rule book on modern recording and effects. Then you have Pink Floyd and then Jimi Hendrix. And songs for your road trip ..... Jimi Hendrix - 1983 a merman i should turn to be. Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Dimond. Queens of the Stone Age ( their whole first album titled Queens of the Stone Age ) If you want to rock things up while it's still daylight. Really liked this reaction, Much love from the UK! x
There is no other band like Pink Floyd, but there are others that transformed music. The synthesizer they used on this album was also pioneering. I bought one around 1990. It was already a relic by then. Fun to play with, though.
I bought a copy of DSOTM while I was at school, sold it on. Soon afterwards though I bought another copy. A lot has changed in my life in the last 51 years but a constant has been to own a copy of this album. Pink Floyd have done well out of me, I have probably bought this album in different formats half a dozen times. I have probably heard most of it thousands of times but I still find more and more detail and meaning. Great to see you enjoying the album, hopefully you will also cover some of the Pulse 1994 performance, friends that went were kind of mentally overloaded by it all and I can see why.
Pink Floyd followed with the celebration / mourning of the loss of Syd Barrett to Mental Health and the effects of drug abuse with the album "WISH YOU WERE HERE" But if you want an alternative band / album try:- Supertramp "Crime of the Century"
Yeah the bass player Roger Waters realised his life was flashing before his eyes approaching his 30s and he was just " kicking around on a piece of ground in his home town waiting for someone or something to show him the way" And On The Run was about their fear of Flying. Great gig in the sky is about grief and the stages of it. Brain Damage and us and them are political. And would LOVE if you went back to the start and listened to all their albums they really changed on each one. Also watch a brief history of Pink Floyd on here, It will help a lot. x
Nice reaction. I would follow this up with the follow up album. Wish You Were Here. It's equally as good and carries on the form of the band at their prime. Then possibly backtrack to some of the earlier stuff ( not all of which is consistently great, but the very first Syd Barrett one provides some nice context and contrast). Meddle, Animals, and The Wall are also amongst their greats
I consider this album one song. I make the whole thing into one high-bitrate MP3 and I listen to it all without pausing or not at all. Great art is rare. Ya gotta respect it
Very Demure. Very Mindful Road Trippin by RHCP, Kansas's Dust in the Wind, and Hotel California for Joshua Tree! Dark Side of the Moon makes for great conversation, and I loved hearing your thoughts. This album's like an amusement park of existential philosophy. So spot on at 27:05. Glad you heard the last three as a suite! It's the perfect sonic & thematic crescendo They have a wild back catalogue. i think you'll like Piper at the Gates of Dawn Always good to see you !!
They want you to listen to the whole album without stopping, not just each song in full! The idea is that each “side” of the vinyl is one continuous piece of music. So the first piece is Speak to Me through Great Gig in the Sky, and the second is Money through Eclipse. Also there are several films about Pink Floyd that you must watch to get the full story. Two in particular I can think of that show the equipment they used to make those sounds in On the Run. Happy to share them with you on Google drive or something
if you enjoy sax in rock... Check the album Aja by Steely Dan. Considered to be the best produced album of all time, and definitely Steelys Magnum Opus!
If you want to react to another top ten album. You need to listen to the album Ten by Pearl Jam. It’s a good listen all the way through. Not a bad song on the album.
Something you should know - One of the things which makes this album so unique is the FLOW. It should be listened to without interruption. One of the differences in today's way people consume music is that back in the day, we listened to albums...whereas today people listen to songs, individually.
@@growupslowlypod to add to rick's comments, if I may: when you world turns to shit and you've had a crappy day, you come home, pour a scotch (or similar), or glass of red, drink that offing it down. Then, pour another, woof that down too, then pour a third one. Put this, OR ANY Pink Floyd record on. Go find a bean bag or deep leather couch, turn off all the lights, put your headphones on and sink down into your chair, close your eyes, sip away the final drink, and let the music sooth your soul !!!

Couldn't you find a larger microphone? That looks ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and skip Pink Floyd's early albums before they found their sound. They're not very good.

Just a bit of feedback. This is the second clip I've watched. I won't be watching again. Reason. I tuned in to see your reaction. What I get is a bit of music in 10 second clips and mostly you rambling on. I don't care your going to find the Joshua Tree or any other things you ramble on about. I tuned in to see your reaction to Dark Side and as such there's very little of that up to Great Gig. So I won't be tuning in any more
Hey, thanks! I felt like maybe it was too much talking but I had some people on a past reaction say they really enjoyed that part so I decided to keep it in. No worries if it’s not your thing.
Don’t be embarrassed, i’m actually jealous you got to listen to it with fresh ears.

To answer your question about the theme of DSOTM, I submit this very brief synopsis: "Birth; Life; Death."
I've always thought of DSOTM as being about all the things that drive us crazy: money, time, thoughts of death, literal schizophrenia, etc.

The Soft Parade

The Live 8 reunion of the classic lineup
The Endless River as the band's final goodbye.
Alan Parsons Project. Alan parson did a lot of work on DSOTM. He’s amazing.
