I really appreciate the tutorials you have shared. I love how you share your discomfort. But I also love how you describe the way you mix colors and apply the paint. You describe it so well, in fact, that me as a colorblind person am interested in trying to paint because of you.
hands is one of the most available subject to draw. in high school I used to draw my hands a lot because it was the only subject I had nearby. also my art teacher kept us away from using straight black. she said things would look flat and to use navy blue or mix a color with black rather than straight up black. I don't know if that would give you more a result you are thinking about in your mind.
Very nice. I know so many artists who are afraid to draw hands. I don't have an easy time with them. The poses and styles are very interesting. I love your flesh tones. You certainly have a distinctive style about you. When we aim for perfection and fall short, that becomes our style and demonstrates the mircle of beauty from imperfection. I wanted to add, people learn in different ways, and it's likely that while your demonstration may not have been the most academic, people learned a lot from it. At least, they likely gained an informal step toward a more acedemic understanding. It's nice to see work that's not perfect, but still beautiful; it gives people an attainable target.
I am terrified of drawing hands, but I love them too much to stay away. :) Plus, you know, conquer your fears, all that, haha. Thanks for the kind words, I was brought up quite academically in some aspects, so I cringe at lack of structure, but you are right that actually, a lot of people seemed to like that it was casual and less academic, it made my explaining maybe a little more accessible and human in a way. I'll have to keep that in mind :)
Don't worry about the tutorials so much. There are enough people teaching their expertise. You tell us your experience very well, and how you think about things helps us validate our own fears and anxieties about painting or art, and yet you create marvelous work that we can all relate to. You are a lovely person with great, unique work, and we all love the stuff you do. Please keep going. ^_^
Thank you so very much for the very lind words, they mean a lot. :) I would love to do tutorials though, because I know first hand what it is to respond to some types of teaching more than others, and I figured I might be able to offer another one amongst the multitude. If I can help even one person then that would be wonderful. :) I'm just a perfectionist, so I have to do them properly ^^. Thank you again for your support!
I don't know if you have a video on this or not, but if not, I'd like to see you do a tutorial on how you draw hands. I'm decent at hands, but you make it look so easy and anatomically correct.
Sermon Gill Ah damn, I painted the other three with watercolours, haha!! Guess I'll have to do more then 😉 In the meantime, I have a skin tones video (kinda) if you want to see a bit of the technique I'm using, but I'll also be posting a proper good quality tutorial at some point, and I'll make a real effort to explain what little I know, promise :)
these are really nice! i've wanted to paint hands in gouache lately but skin tones and hands are difficult for me, but you've pulled these off really well :)
Stanley Draws Thank you very much :) Skin tones are indeed tricky, mostly because we are so used to them that we can tell quite quickly if something's wrong. But they are conquerable!! I'm still not very happy with those hands, and even more so a few weeks later, haha. Need more practice...We'll make it, you'll see 😄
Oh amazing hand drawings. Nice to see someone using Gouache. Got some too a while ago and want to try them out more just like watercolors. You have a sub :)
+Sol Anna Trying to learn is the best anyone of us can do! I have never painted with oils, so you have that much more knowledge than me 😊 I'll have to try them one day!
I just discovered your channel and I just wanted to let you know I love your art ! I find gouache so hard to use, but yeah I need to practice (and I feel pretty excited to work on it haha). Your hands and gouache skills are GREAT and I love the overall style !
Thank you so much for your very kind words!! Gouache can take a little bit of getting used to, but trust me, it's so worth it in the end. Ultimately, I find it's one of the most convenient paint mediums :)
Agree with you about acrylic - I have painted just one picture in acrylic and found it so very frustrating that I haven't bothered having another go. I probably should, just to give it another chance, but watercolour is my first love.
I love the concepts for the second piece. I have been really into geometric shapes in my own work lately and that piece speaks to me! Great job! And I think you have a great grasp of skin tones. - Marnise Nicole
A few, yes. The main difference being that gouache can be reactivated with water once dry, as opposed to acrylic. I did a big gouache tutorial if you want to know more!
The way you draw hands is beautiful and i adore your painting style! I think you got the skintones down pretty well, esp how you use color variation. The only issue i could see is that you use a lot of cold and dull tones like purple and light pink with some yellow mixed in. I personally like some orange or even red accents in skintones, esp hands, since it makes them look so lively. Especially with that sweet subsurface scattering :')
Thank you Joana :) I see what you mean, and I think it might've been why I wasn't so happy with them. They didn't feel lively and organic enough, and I think you are right as to why. Live and learn ^^ Thanks for your great input!
Joana Hahn Youre right! Cool tones do appear in skin, but mostly where veins or bone are.closer to the top than flesh-- a palm or hand has more arteries and muscle, so it has more red tones. I was going to make the same comment. Thank you!
I love it, I don't get why you don't like the skin tones, because (it's my opinion) I think it's really beautyful and with the brushstrokes it has this thing... I don't know I just really like it! xD
Thank you so much!!!! :D I just still struggle with skin tones a lot, so they still feel experimental to me on paper. I very much appreciate your support :)
Yes, it is indeed, and it's honestly driving me nuts, haha. That's why I never put any of my own work up on my walls. I see too much wrong with it all the time....
I absolutely love the brush strokey style in these. What style of paper do you normally paint on? I have a hard time finding something I really like, but perhaps it's the cold press paper I don't like.
Thanks, I'm gald you like it. :) I use a variety of papers, mostly basic card, brown paper, and both cold and hot press watercolour papers. What do you not like about cold press?
I don't really know how to answer that....I have been drawing my whole life, and recently I started doing hand studies a lot more. If it's any reassurance, I don't often draw hands from nowhere, I almost always have a reference :)
I use hot press 300gsm paper, and for those paintings the paper actually warped a tiny bit, but for such small paintings I don't bother stretching my paper. I didn't use enough water for the paper to buckle too crazily.
I love how you challenge yourself and I really like the results. I guess my favorite is the second one:) Are you planning to do the 100 day project with elleluna on Instagram btw?
Thanks Laura :) I hadn't heard of that project before you mentionnned it. Sounds very interesting, and a good challenge, but I don't tend to do challenges that require a time factor because I can't promise myself I'll keep to it due to the nature of my main job, and it all ends up being more of a stress source rather than anything else. Will you?
Yes, I know what you mean, that's why I choose to do a project with only 10 minute tasks per day. Last year I started my black and white patterns in an A6 sketchbook. I put down 8 patterns per double page and uploaded them all at once every 8th day. This way I could cheat a little and sometimes create two or three patterns at one day and leave out other days :P But at the end I had 100 little patterns right on time and I even continued drawing new ones after the project ended. I think this time I'll just switch to gouache for colored patterns. This way I also can play with different color palettes. Hands could be a useful thing to do, too... or quick gesture drawings! The good thing about this challenge is, that you can connect with others on Instagram very well. There are so many people taking part, it's incredible! But yeah, I struggle with that time factor, too ;)
It made me really upset when you said you didn't feel skilled enough to teach anyone about anything. I personally enjoyed the skin qouache video, an artist who is also really amazing called Holly Exley was also told that she was not supposed to teaching or giving tips by someone who claimed to have brushes older than her. You can't make everyone happy with teaching videos but I assure you that there is a million times more people that enjoy your teaching videos than those who don't. :)
Aw, I'm sorry to have upset you! You are very sweet though :) And if it's any reassurance, I didn't say that as a self deprecating comment, or because anyone told me I shouldn't teach. I said it more as a statement meaning that I didn't personally feel like I was in control of my medium enough yet to be able to cover all the areas I would want to, and be able to answer any questions with certitude and confidence. Does that make sense? I simply still feel very new with gouache, as it's been less than a year since I started, and so I am still in the steep learning curve where you're technique and knowledge change very quickly, and I want to wait until it all levels a little and I won't feel like anything I migth say now I'll have to change again soon. But your comment was super sweet, and gave me a bit more confidence anyway, so thank you ^^

is so satisfying to watch this pallet in action
these paintings are honestly mind blowing. i hope i can reach this level of skill. keep up the amazing work
Thank you very much for the kind words :) It's aaaalll just me practicing as much as I can. And I'll always need a bunch more, haha
Very nice. I know so many artists who are afraid to draw hands. I don't have an easy time with them. The poses and styles are very interesting. I love your flesh tones. Mr Ed Draws I totaly agree!
I am terrified of drawing hands, but I love them too much to stay away. :) Plus, you know, conquer your fears, all that, haha. Mr Ed Draws yeah, i used to always hide the hands of my characters cuz im too lazy to draw them haha
I LOVE these smaller pieces. Watching them was incredibly fun; and I would LOVE to see you do watercolors!
I love this so much!! Love your gouache paintings!

your voice is so relaxing.. i almost fell a sleep and those hands were so beautiful

these are gorgeous. wow
Thank you very much :)
yay for another tutorial 😀😀 I'll keep my eyes peeled. .. thank you for your time.
I love how you do skin tones!
I'd love to see a video of the other 3 hands with a voice over of you explaining which colours you started with and used to build up!
Ah thank you so much! I just saw your response when I was checking out your watercolour hands!
I am very happy that I found your channel . I might give gouache another try!
Yes, do it! I'd love to hear what you think of it ^^
Love your videos, and I love the gouache videos! I myself am trying to get into using gouache, so I'm interested to see how others use it!
How is gouache treating you? :)
Thank you so much for watching my work ^^
I am so in love with your talent! Such wonderful work!!
Thank You!! :)
these are really nice! i've wanted to paint hands in gouache lately but skin tones and hands are difficult for me, but you've pulled these off really well :)

Oh amazing hand drawings. Nice to see someone using Gouache. Got some too a while ago and want to try them out more just like watercolors.
You have a sub :)
Thank you!! ^^
Let me know what you think of gouache when you try it! ;)
Thank you for your video. Im very used to paint with oils, gouache its difficult to me! But im trying to learn.

Thank you lovely!!! I've sent your prize by the way, last week, so let me know when you get it ^^
Myriam's Illustrations Yay!!! I can't wait, I will definitely let you know when it arrives!!!! Thank you so much!
beautiful series!
Thank you !^^
I love the concepts for the second piece. I have been really into geometric shapes in my own work lately and that piece speaks to me! Great job! And I think you have a great grasp of skin tones. - Marnise Nicole
Thank you very much :) I love geometric shapes too, they are appearing in my work more and more....
I love this video, it's really inspiring. I've only painted with acrylics before, is there a big difference between them and gouache?
A few, yes. The main difference being that gouache can be reactivated with water once dry, as opposed to acrylic. I did a big gouache tutorial if you want to know more!
I'd like to see some watercolouring from you :)
So would I, haha. Hopefully soon , I miss it ^^

Joana Hahn Youre right! Cool tones do appear in skin, but mostly where veins or bone are.closer to the top than flesh-- a palm or hand has more arteries and muscle, so it has more red tones. I was going to make the same comment. Thank you!
Anthony Ruggieri Yes, exactly. Learning learning learning. Thanks for the feedback guys :)
I love this! U just inspired me to draw hands 😂😂
I'm glad! Hands are awesome!! :)
This is making me wanna paint hands!!
Do it!!! They are so interesting :)
Love your work! So beautiful! What paper are you using here?
ugh i love the last drawing. the pose of the hand and the jewel is really pretty
I'm glad you like it, thank you so much for watching :)
You're welcome and I really like your video's 😅
In your second hand piece your pinky is out of proportion. Your skin tones look great! Great videos, too!
God Bless!
Yes, it is indeed, and it's honestly driving me nuts, haha. That's why I never put any of my own work up on my walls. I see too much wrong with it all the time....

how long did it take you to learn how to do hands? in general
I don't really know how to answer that....I have been drawing my whole life, and recently I started doing hand studies a lot more. If it's any reassurance, I don't often draw hands from nowhere, I almost always have a reference :)
what do u use for the camera stand?
What kind of paper do you use and how do you prevent the paper from warping
I use hot press 300gsm paper, and for those paintings the paper actually warped a tiny bit, but for such small paintings I don't bother stretching my paper. I didn't use enough water for the paper to buckle too crazily.
loved it as always
Thank youuu! :D
Hei, Miriam, your paintings are great! I think smaller pieces videos are supr fun, you should do them more often. Xoxo
Thanks Amanda, I do plan to! :)
Hello Myriam! Your artwork and videos are wonderful. I was curious about what video editing software you use? Thanks!
I use a software called Camtasia :)
you should try doing a gouache tutorial video. it woukd be amazing if you did!
It's in the works ;)
I never found anyone who thinks that masters skin tones
What brand of gouache do you use?
Louise Bainco Winsor&Newton Designers, and a couple Daler Rowney Designers :)
Great ! ;)
Spirit medium sounds like you’re doing well at speaking with the dead haha.
I love how you challenge yourself and I really like the results. I guess my favorite is the second one:)
