Drove a Unimog from Sydney to Coonabarabran for a mate who didn't have a truck licence. Of the 5 mentioned you do need an MR licence to drive them. 21lites per 100 klms empty, top speed of 95 kph in forward AND REVERSE. Devoid of ANY CREATURE COMFORTS, but does have a round sunroof well I snipers hatch in reality.
I know this is not an underrated 4X4 video, but the LJ Wranglers are seriously underrated. Everyone wants the YJ, TJ, JK or JL, but the LJ is very bulletproof. It has the same 4.0 inline six engine as the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee of its time. Unfortunately they were only available as 2 doors, so if you want to take a few of your friends on the trails, you'll need a JK.
Great review! Seems you have upset some viewers. Off-roader is not about brand loyalty. Remember we are not talking about returning from a dirt road next to the mall. Off-road vehicle important factors. Solid axels, Good approach, ramp over and departure angles. Steel and not plastic bash plates. Wheel travel. Lockers. Crawl ratio. I feel people don’t understand the words durable and capable, they get stuck on the word reliable. So is IFS more reliable than a solid axel off-road? Does a Ute have a better departure angle than a wagon or SWB jimmy or wrangler? Crawl ratio? A petrol Rubicon has a better crawl ratio of 77:1, the 300 series is 42.62:1. Remember, off-road ability, not a corrugated dirt road where a Subaru wins, or towing where land cruiser and patrol win, think of rock crawling. It’s a shame that the SWB patrol, SWB landcruiser, rocky, old SWB landy, it seems most of the fun off-roaders have been replaced by safe reliable and economical SUV’s.
What about hilux, fortuner, and the prado... The above three vehicles are bulletproof and way better then shirty defender and wrangler, A few mods on these and one can bet there lives on these.
Any Patrol really, don’t narrow it down to just the GU. GQ’s were bullet proof and good condition factory TD42’s in this model are fetching upwards of 25k plus now. Legendary. Looking back at the rest of the list though, any serious 4x4’er who wanted to go around Aust, would be taking a Patrol or a Landcruiser. They definitely wouldn’t be taking a Wrangler and probably not a Defender either.
@@lukedontknow9283 Good luck finding a Defender at Patrol prices. Also parts are ridiculous, have to buy from the UK to get around the insane Aust distributor markup. Patrol parts are everywhere and comparatively cheap and they have nowhere near the same reliability hassles. I've owned multiple examples of both.
Most of the old girls need a few big weekends put into them to get rampant aftermarket wiring and maintenance back in order, no different to any other 4x4 of that age plus age issues with rust. I'd rather spend my hard earned on a newer Common rail ZD30 vehicle. Toyotas are priced out of the market even more then what they were.
Too old and made redundant by the inclusion of the 70 series. Not that you can find a 70 that hasn't gone around the sun a few times or hasn't been on a mine site for under 40k.
Mate we were so torn between the Jeep and the FJ. We went Jeep as we already had a Toyota at the pointy end of the list and we feel that the list needed the Wrangler.
ANCAP, the organisation that encourages manufacturers to build cars to be more intelligent then the driver. Prioritising electronic systems to get drivers out of situations they shouldn't have been in to begin with, the previous standard was far more credible. And because it's not mandated on older models in the market, models like the 79 series cruiser aren't required to get retested and thus avoiding a plethora of bad publicity. So do you like driving? Because supporting systems like this is how we get driverless cars.
They didn’t “recommend” a Jeep. And even if they did why would you “lose respect” for someone because of a difference of opinion. Your comment actually warrants zero respect for you from anyone. Just relax and enjoy the free videos these guys make.
@@TheBillyo13 This was literally a video recommending the top 5 serious 4x4s under $40k. So yes, its a recommendation. And recommending a Jeep to people when they are such lemons is what makes me lose respect for them as a serious motoring journalist.
@@mikezog1030 I mean yes the are hidiously unreliable, but to be entirely honest, in terms of off road ability only, there's nothing much that can out drive one
They're the most capable offroad vehicle short of a Daily 4x4 and far more practical everyday. A lot of cars mainly petrols have no issues whatsoever, Jeeps other labels like Compass and the early Grand Cherokees have given them a lot of bad karma. 10/10 I don't think they care about Aust though, as long as they keep selling in the US.

Wrangler sport auto is 59k driveaway in Aust. I'm not saying that's by any means cheap and there seems to be a massive markup from 32k USD though.
$40k AUD used.
