Play the long game. The best suggestion. Like I said in my "is retro game collecting useless" response video, you don't have to get every game this year, or even next year. Pace yourself, and enjoy the ride. Nice work guys!
Thanks man! It is a slow process for sure. But if done right you really don't have to spend much on this hobby. Cheers!
BTW gonna check out your response vid now :)
The day I stopped buying new games on day one was the day I made my video game habit a LOT cheaper.
I know this video is mainly about retro games but the logic is actually pretty sound for all video games.
Sell 80 percent of what we pick up....That is something we could learn. We're terrible at picking up stuff we don't need--that is, we don't buy the stuff we COULD flip...
I'm iffy on the replacement label issue, even for my own collection, simply because when I'm gone, whoever has to deal with my crap--they're not going to know/care what is and isn't a repro label and then that game gets put back in the wild and someone else is screwed over if they were hoping for a legit copy. BUT, I should note, much, MUCH respect at how much you guys keep reiterating DO NOT RESELL. Thank you!!
Excellent call on fixing stuff--too many things are tossed just because it "doesn't work" and so often it is almost a ridiculously easy fix! Our Xbox and 360 both were instances of this--the two of them cost us $2 total.
We so, so, so rarely buy new compared to old. We're always so far behind on games it rarely behooves us to buy new when we already have a backlog. When we do buy new, it's often a pre-order set up that we use like layaway and do $5-$10 a week.
Thrifting is totally dead for game collecting. OTHER collectibles, well...that's why we keep going with hopes of game stuff. Legit tips in here guys!!
Thanks for watching! We definitely don't prefer replacement labels and only have a few in our collection that way. But it's hard for me to let a good board go to waste. In the instances we've done this with the games were beyond the point of usable. Basically destroyed. So it was nice to give them life again lol. Idk, we're weird. Flipping is so much fun. And we find our self having to do this because when we find stuff at garage sales we usually offer them a flat amount for everything. Then we have doubles and blah blah blah lol. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid To be honest, I think the repro label thing gets me so much because in our area, there's this one guy who's got a booth at nearly every flea market and he's selling repros for online prices. I've spoken up to some potential buyers to make sure they know what they're getting--it's usually met with some choice words...
I've talked to the guy before and he's such a shyster about it. He feigns knowing better until you call him out then he fumbles for words and asks you to leave...
That's shitty for sure. No doubt about it
I like that you guys emphasized that you shouldn't resell the game if it's not %100 authentic. People on eBay will sell cib games that aren't authentic and won't say so it's a great tip for collectors :) great video guys!!
Thanks man! Ya it's a dick move to resell something like that. But we do love finding shit NES or SNES games that have great boards and giving the little fellas new life :)! Hope to see you in a few short days. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid yeah just let me know if you wanna meet up Saturday morning :)
Oh we will!!
Cool episode guys. I think another thing you can do is look for games that get an HD re-release or Remake. This pushes the price right down. Ico was about $140 before the HD release. Now I be seen the original cardboard box version go for as little as $15. So you can pick up those iconic original games for a fraction of what they used to cost.
Great frickin point man! Damn I wish we would have thought of that. Shenmue 1 and 2, all the collections coming out etc. On point man. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Fantastic tips guys! I do slightly disagree on one thing, I would say it is ok to sell relabeled games AS LONG AS you explicitly state that it is relabeled to the buyer so they know before buying and knock the price down appropriately. I have found many people don't really care if it is the original label unless they are a super hardcore collector. Anyway, awesome video and congrats on 1,500 subs!!!
Thanks a ton man! It's been a wild ride for sure. Have an awesome week! Cheers!
Great video and some good points. I don't really fix anything, but I probably need to change that. Especially if it's an easy fix and can make some money back. Cheers fellas
Thanks man! All depends on if you enjoy it. I love digging in and figuring out how something works. But some find it annoying. The NES is really fun to work on for some reason. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid I'll have to tear one apart and get my hands dirty
I think it's awesome how you two give advice on how to collect video games. Video games are not just something to entertain yourself, it's also a hobby. Speaking of hobbies, have you guys ever dabbled in D&D?
And a fun hobby it is :)! I can't speak for Robert but I haven't. My brother is way into it though. It seems cool. Thanks for watching man. Cheers!
Cheers brother ^_^.
I know that this is an old video but I like to say, collect what YOU want not what everyone tells you you want
We agree completely! Thats how we collect! Cheers!
Awesome video and the freeze captions had me rolling!
Hey GAMING OFF THE GRID! Great video guys. Lots of wonderful tips and advice!
Thanks so much for watching man! We really appreciate the support! Cheers!
Nice video! Maybe some tips I can use once this strike is over and I can collect again. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a ton for watching man! Work strike? If so......sorry to hear that. Take care man! Cheers!
Saw Mikey sporting a Gaming off the grid T in the last video I saw . Might need to get one myself...
Hell ya!!!! FYI all proceeds from merch sales this month are donated to Childrens Cancer connection.....so now is a good time to buy. Thanks a ton for watching and the support. Cheers!
Solid video! I enjoyed the Practical and everyday tips despite having already collected for years. Just like any other hobby it's what you make of it.
This is an oldie! Thanks for going back in the archives. Cheers!
Great tips and great charity! Keep up the awesome work 🍻🎮
Some great tips! I recently tried to score a broken NES to try and fix but the guy never responded. They are very easy to fix. And enough with the BK beer, other people gave you beer, too ;)
LOL!!! We still have so much to get too and October is almost here so we'll have to save some back because we got to do October beers ya know :)! We still have a few Captain beer ready to rock. Thanks for watching man. Cheers!
are you guys always sipping beer in your vids ...I love that .!
It's the best of both worlds
Yesir. We review a different brew in every episode. Video Games and Beer. Perfect pairing :). Cheers!
Just bought y'all's pillow, love your guy's channel keep up the awesome content 👍👍
Hell ya dude! We really appreciate the support. Cheers!
Good advice, appreciate you guys! And wishing you the best holiday! Cheers!
Good ole classic here! Happy holidays! Cheers!
Great tips guys. Awesome video!
Thanks a ton for watching! Cheers!
I gave up buying new games within the last few years. No joke, a lot of times those games ended up staying sealed because I was busy playing other games.
My rule? I have to play 2 games on my backlog and “check” them off my list. By that I mean, either beating the game or feeling I’ve played enough to move on.
Thats a good strategy! We have lots of games sealed also and a huge backlog! Cheers!
Great episode, great hints guys!!
Collecting can be extortionate or super cheap depending on how you approach it, I'm somewhere in the middle lol
Thanks! We are cheapskates man! We both hate spending money lol! So we live by these things. Cheers man!
Another tip... craigslist, letgo and Mercari are still options. Yes, it's getting harder to score on these sites but I've got some amazing deals lately by using Letgo because the garage sale market in MO is super difficult these days
We have had a few nice pickups this year on craigslist for sure. Great advice. It's tough out there but there are deals to be had :). Thanks so much for watching! Cheers!
If you aren’t getting screwed over on Mercari.
A nice topic and one people touch on over the years on and off.
Like you say it's easy to do if you know what you are looking for and take your time.
The way I 'collect' these days is only buy a game I will play. Not just junk to bulk out the collection.
Also, I tend to play and try and complete games that I already own, rather than just keep buying. The more choice you have the less game you play... it's veyr much like Netflix... you spend half an hour choosing a movie before you settle down to watch it ;)
Great point! We are in the same boat. It's fun to collect but we don't keep anything we don't intend on beating or covering in an episode. Thanks so much for watching, cheers! PS Love the Netflix analogy! Spot on!
This was stellar my friends! Couldn’t agree more about getting broke sh!t to try to fix or flip and not being afraid to open up a console and see what you can do with it or salvage for another day.
Almost spit-taked my coffee at “ sh!t from shinola”🤣
The taking a beat up cart and transplanting the chipset to a so fresh and so clean clean shell and label for your own collection is something I feel gets slept on. Yeah it’s not 100% original but if it’s to play or display in your collection who the eff cares?!?
Dude, garage sales around here are nuts for game prices, even for dogs!t games because they know people are collecting, ditto with thrifts like you said. Ps deuce and Wii are definitely where it’s at for ease and cheap (for now) game collecting.
Very cool that you made this to not only answer his question (which I think was from a nightcap) but also it’s kind of like a PSA for cheap retro gaming.
Oh yeah, agree they added substantially more malt backbone on the double dog, spot on it’s got the maltiness of a scotch ale/ wee heavy. It’s one that if you don’t want a hop assault on your senses, it’s kind of a gateway ipa to my friends who prefer super malty beers to try something a little different. Glad you liked 🍻
Ok, think I wrote enough. 🤓 great one again!
Thanks for watching man, glad you enjoyed. Ya hardcore collectors go nuts about the re-labeling stuff. But I just can't let a perfect board go to waste. And usually the end up in my garage collection where I like to sit outside and game. No harm in that :). Cheers man! Have a great weekend!
Rob crushed this one. I know this is three years out, but still relevant. Wes had a good point on confidence. Start small. Work your way up. Two things I would add is, most games have a pretty similar clone game cheap. Do you really need game X when game Z is pretty much the same thing but for $10? Get it. The other thing is sometimes you do have to jump on something. I got Rodea Sky Soldier, both discs, because I knew it wouldn't sell all that great. Or Bayonetta 1-2 as a pack. Second chances don't come along too often.
Agreed! Best way we know to build collections for cheap! 🍻
Great video, guys! Made a lot of good, informative points. The only thing I would say is that it's alright to re-sell games you've replaced labels/cases/manuals for AS LONG as you're honest and upfront with the buyer and tell them about it. I agree though, doing those things and trying to pass them off as original is totally shady.
Thanks for watching!! This was a fun topic to film :). Great point as well. We try keeping everything original when we can bit it's hard to let a good board go to waste. Thanks again, cheers 🍻!!
New to the channel. I enjoyed the content. Thanks!
Awesome!!! Welcome to the GOTG Crew Larry! Glad you are enjoying our content :)! We really appreciate your support, Cheers!
So I actually am a college student in Southern Illinois and there’s not a lot of garage sales down here, or at least non to my knowledge. I was wondering how you guys actually find the garage/ sales you guys go too to get these games so cheap? Love your guys videos btw! Been binging them for 3 days straight now!😎
Good question. We look on Craigslist and Facebook some and also just drive around in the Spring and Summer months. We're in Iowa so our weather is about the same. We won't start seeing a lot until late April/beginning of May. In the off season check you local thrift stores on the regular and look at Facebook Market place. Lots of deals out there. Not sure if you have gotten to our hunting videos yet but lots of tips there. Thanks a ton for watching. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid I don’t know if you’ll reply, but I have seen the hunting videos. It’s just we really only have a goodwill down here and that’s about it. All they have are like 2 wii games but I’m gonna keep going! Thanks for being an inspiration!
Hi, I'm England. We don't have yard/garage sales here. Charity shops in my area, well most of them don't even sell media. We don't have a gamestop, wallmart or target. Facebook marketplace doesn't have any good deals, a lot of scammers. Gumtree is a bust. We don't have a craigslist. All we have is CEX and a couple of retro stores within a couple of hours travel distance, all of which are ridiculously overpriced.
Dang sorry to hear that! Hate to not have an stores with deals! Cheers!
You guys are killin it. Just straight killin it. Production is just through the roof. Delivery is fantastic. I end up just marveling at those aspects, let alone what the topic is. You could tell me to go F myself and my tune wouldn’t change. Your success is all but guaranteed. That, paired with your consistency, is a meal ticket. And if it isn’t, then it’s the platform’s fault. I needed to see something like this today.
Wow man, thank you so much! It's nice hearing this type of stuff and we put in a ton of work. We are both very positive dudes but sometimes it does feel a bit like we are pissing into the wind. Really glad you are enjoying the content and we have no plans of taking the foot off the gas. We have some pretty cool shit lined up for next week that we can't wait to share with everyone :). Cheers!
I definitely get that! We can work harder and stay the course and none of that matters. It’s deflating. But we’re at least at the end of the day, the change in the platform we wanna make. As for the viewers, that’s just an uncontrollable variable unfortunately. So keep kicking butt.
Cheers to the grind life man :)! Boom!
The movie is The Jerk with Steve Martin. And I know to bundle games so I can get more games for less dollars but I'm going to say this buy the genres that you play. So if you play shooters, fighting and JRPG's get those games if you can find them in flea markets or yard sales
LOL!!! We knew you would like that clip :)! Love your movie knowledge man. Cheers!
You can sell replacement label games as long as it in the description. It’s the original game still but at a cheaper price.
That is correct! Cheers!
Good advice guys 👍
Thanks! We love talking about this stuff and have had tons of luck the last couple of years with pick ups. Cheers!
Nice. Subbed.
Thanks a ton! We really appreciate the support. Cheers!
I used to go to various stores, maybe just to look. Point being, the staff got to know me and might offer me a deal, or put something aside for me once in awhile.
That's awesome. Goes to show if you are nice to people when you go places good things happen. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers!
Cool video. Plus you keep it real. Thifting is almost a waste of time and garage sales can kill a piece of your soul.
I would say a good way to buy games is to buy at MoGameCon and try to bundle and negotiate with sellers! Convention prices can be low on certain games compared to stores
Great point and.......Bundle!!! Convention prices suck if you don't know how to work it like you mention :). Thanks for watching man!!!
I don't know if I'm the guy to listen to because I spend way to much on games. I have been having a blast here lately collecting xbox, xbox 360, playstation 2, playstation 3 and Nintendo wii. I have had my best luck bundling games up that someone is trying to sell individually or just bundles in general. You can literally get those systems games for a dollar or less a piece if you do that. For a long time I was Focusing on NES, Super nintendo and gamecube And take my word for it that's where you start spending the money you don't really want to spend.
We are in the exact same boat my friend :)! We love the retro stuff obviously but right now is not the time to buy that stuff. XBOX- Wii is on where it's at right now. We have picked up tons of bundles as well. Recently hit a video store that was closing as well and had an awesome haul. It will be good until the NOSTALGIA bug bites the kids that grew up w/ this stuff. Thanks a ton for watching and the comment. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid it's also cool because you can do so much with the duplicates that you accumulate. I was thinking about letting them stack up and selling them but what I'm doing is just putting them in a box in my gameroom. Then when my buddies come over if they want they can take 1 of the games home for free. Figured it was just a way to help out fellow collectors and friends.
Oh yes! Giving double away is always fun and a good way to help people out. Good stuff for sure :)
I think its ok to sell a game when you've replaced labels or the cartridge portion ONLY if you disclose that in the description and the buyer knows what they are getting. Honesty.
Totally. If you disclose it definitely fine. This is an old one man. Thanks go checking out the backlog. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid Ya I thought about it after lol But hell ya I'm gonna check the backlog! Its the best way to get to know the people in the channels you'll hopefully be watching for years to come.
Great video and Awesome advice! Also how do you recover from regretfully selling one of your games you didn’t get good money for? I sold my super Mario kart and got 28 dollars out of it but I’m bummed about it lol.
It's happened tons man. We buy and sell so much that we just move on. I just shipped out a CIB Genesis console today that I barely broke even on. Sucks but nothing I can do about it now ya know. Thanks a ton for watching and cheers to keeping it retro!
Thanks for the video. I usually go after Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast games. But they're very expensive especially the Saturn. I go for the imports and maybe reproduction.
Love both those consoles as well but ya..... very frickin expensive! We import for the Saturn as well. A lot cheaper. Thanks for watching! Cheers! 🍻
I did what you guys did with your nes games with my pokemon ruby and I would never sell it because of the fact that it's not orginal
The fact of the matter is you can't collect on a budget, unless you have countless hours to go searching for them. Most people don't have that kind of time.
We should talk bro. Foreal. Like zoom call or something. We have zero time but have mapped out our area. Hit us up via email if you want to do a deep dive :)
Discovered you guys a few days ago. My favorite retro game channel way better than Metal Jesus.
Well thanks man! We got a LONG way to go to be in his league for sure. But we’re enjoying the journey. PS thanks for watching this old ass video:). Cheers!
I normally keep an eye out for good deals if I can as long as I can get a physical copy of those games
Physical media all the way for sure :)! Cheers! Thanks for watching!
Collecting video games can be very expensive and take up a lot of space. A friend wanted to start buying a lot of Super Nintendo games because those were his favorite games as a kid. Not to collect them but to play them. I told him there was a way to get to play all the SNES games he wanted and not to have to pay a cent to get them and not have to store them. Download a SNES emulator and download ROMs of the games. He did it and said I saved him thousands of dollars. Plus I said no matter how many SNES carts of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World he buys it is nothing new but exactly the same old game he remembers. I told him there are ROM hacks of these classics that hackers change the games and you can play new different versions of the games. There are fan retranslations of Chrono Trigger closer to the Japanese Super Famicom version and new versions where you can save Schala and one with a completely new area added. A completely playable 1999. I told him there are ROM hacks, at least a dozen of them, that are completely new versions of Super Mario World. The best reason not to get into buying a lot of original carts is you can play the games for free on ROM hacks on your computer with an emulator. I have told a lot of my friends the advantages of ROM hacks and they sold all their video games to get the cash and free up the space. All the Super Nintendo games you ever wanted on one little thumb drive AND completely new versions of old favorites. ,.
My number one tip is be a generation behind. PS4 and Xbox one right now are dirt cheap.
100% agree! We are collecting hard for both! Cheers!
Happy Birthday sir
Thank you so much!!
Awesome tips guys of budgeting of collecting retro games, may I throw one advice in, since there’s plenty of retro gaming stores around the world, search the price difference. Say for instance your looking for that one game you want to play, you went to one store and it’s about 50$ and you went to another store and that game it’s about 25$ it’s best to check to get in a reasonable price.
I’m slightly curious since my memory card slot on the ps2 might not be working I’m how do you guys manage to that part on any console to make it work again?
Thanks a ton for watching! PS2's are a console we don't work on much except for the controllers. But try slot 2 for sure. If that's a no go, open it up and check the connections on the board. May be a simple solder fix. PS2's are so cheap right now I wouldn't spend a ton of time on it or $$$. Cheers!
Gaming Off The Grid cheers lads thanks I may need to have and what’s up.
@@GamingOffTheGrid How about doing a transplant, picking up one with a shot laser cheap then putting the Memory/Controller port part from one into the other or vice versa with the disk drive? 🤔
I bought a lot of games in good condition on ebay not too overpriced and they work fine
hey guys ive my copy of dino crisis 1-2 in Italian how much it worth?
Not sure man. Check eBay sold listings or Price Charter.com. That will give you a good idea. Cheers!
Hey everyone! I'm looking into collecting n64 games and I'm really struggling looking at my local area. I live on campus in college and there are no good retro game stores/garage sales happening often within a 3-4 mile radius, meaning that I will have to buy primarily off the internet. Do you guys have any tips for buying retro games online? I was looking into ebay and buying in bulk, but this seems like a hit and a miss for n64. Please recommend any other websites I can look at (other than craigslist and offerup since they also have nothing within a 3-4 mile radius).
*One point to note is that I say 3-4 mile radius because anything beyond that is a 1.5 hour bus ride each way which I do not have the time to take. Also I apologize in advance for the formatting of this comment.
Online is rough man, you know this already. I'm sure you have tried but garage sales early in the morning. Most aren't advertised you just have to hit up residential areas and follow the signs. If not try hitting up some video game conventions. Buy in bulk there for better discounts. It's a war of attrition my friend. Also, the 64 is tough right now. Prices are on the rise for sure. Last gen offers the lowest hanging fruit. Thanks a ton for watching. We really appreciate it and good luck w/ your collection. Cheers!
I dont know if i ever tol U? Iam the first
:)!!! Hell Ya Gabbo!!! Hope all is well with you man! Thanks for the support man, it really means a lot!
Gabbo!!!
Have you heard of the pocket go
I have but have never played one. I've heard it's pretty cool though. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
i want 1 of those cupz 👍
We don't currently have them for sale but is something we will definitely look into in the future. Cheers!
If you are on a tight budget the last thing in your mind should be collecting
Depends on how you define "tight budget".
I only buy games I want so I never get anything extra I'd want to sell. I know I probably should buy more to make a profit but I find it to be a hassle.
Totally understand man. It definitely is a hassle. We fund a good portion of our collection from hunting and flipping retro games and it is a grind for sure. Thanks a ton for watching and cheers to 2020!
We're...we're not friends? :(
lol :)! Oh we definitely are. Thanks for watching man and hope all is well. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid I was doing ok until I watched all the way through to the outro and, just like Padme said to Anakin... You're breaking my heart. But then again a wise man also once said "Don't go breaking my, don't go breaking my, I won't go breaking your heart".
sucks your great advices are only good for US inhabitants
Ya I wish we knew more about the other markets but we don't unfortunately. A lot of the strategies still apply though. Cheers!
