Fun fact, that's almost the same as how my mum learned to speak Taiwanese. By continuously watching Taiwanese soap dramas, five years after I was born, she's finally able to communicate with my grandparents on my dad's side in fluent Taiwanese.
Excellent advice! My recommendation would be to include a short meditation before and after the movies or TV shows - just slow the mind with a few intentional breaths. This will help set aside the "clutter" of the day and allow the language retention to incorporate faster and stronger.
I have had success with finding a "How to Learn English" (I am a native US English speaker) podcast in my target language (Japanese, as an example, sticking to Tim's theme). I chose the level just based on how much familiarity i had with the target language...so if my Japanese had been pretty good in the past, then I'd select a learn-english podcast at an intermediate level. I found this very effective...and has the same kind of entertainment aspect as the comic book side-by-side (which i have also used in the past, and found to be pretty fun).
Hey Tim. This is freaking genius. Thx for sharing. Did you have a method for the initial learning? I've tried to learn both Japanese and spanish, and I barely get past 10 or 20 conversational words, and I forget 90% of them over time, LOL but I would love to really learn both languages, and Chinese.

Blessings from Taiwan 😇🥰
Using One Piece for this is brilliant!!
you should invite Matt from "Matt vs Japan" to the podcast. He is one of the most proficient japanese speakers that learned japanese as an adult.
