Seem to be talking on two levels here. The question at 18:08 is a bit telling of the dynamic between a student raised in England where little focus is put on being an entrepreneur and youth feel little opportunity, and an American who was born with a collapsed lung and chose to wrestle through high school and college, under the society of "you can be great". Those success references were embedded early. Hard to draw from that mindset without understanding the sources of motivation and enterprise
It must be a British thing but I see no attempt at connecting with Tim Ferris by these interviewers beyond asking the questions. They don't appear to be listening to his answers. Very strange.
Dude, it's Oxford. It's a completely different environment from what most British people would experience. If he were on national TV there would be more connection. Also these interviewers are students and not necessarily trained interviewers.
I agree with what you say about the interviewers. They're just reading questions to him. I don't think it's a British or Oxford thing, though. (I'm British and studied that uni.)
If he was dressed to impress, this skeptical audience would have appears more riveted, but Tim is a genius I hate that some people dislike videos like this
17:50 “I find writing really, really hard. It’s never been easy for me. And when I graduated from college I vowed never to write anything longer than an email again. It’s really hard, and it’s only that type of [positive, life changing] reader feedback that keeps you writing.”
9:45 If you want to convey a message and catalyze an action of any type, you have to be good at persuading - and if that’s done publically and delivered through you, that is self-promotion. 10:37 The message has to have some *content. It’s that content ultimately that is the most powerful form of marketing.* 10:44 The marketing _begins_ by understanding exactly who you’re trying to communicate with or reach as a customer. And when you have that in mind, that leads you to design the right product. *So the marketing actually precedes what most people perceive as marketing or sales.*
21:30 *Entrepreneurs are people who make things happen, and people who undertake to make something from nothing. That’s it.* You can do that from inside a company. 23:40 “Writing for me is just a medium to teach. I always thought I was going to end up a teacher in 9th or 10th grade.” 23:55 Tim’s self-written obituary note: “A teacher who wanted his students to be better than he was.”
There are many government structure around the world. but not all are operating at the same level of distribution of incentives between consumer and supplier. some government tend to protect corporation more but ultimately it is for the countries economic development. you are correct to certain extent.

20:38 It’s possible to explore many, many things. You don’t have to specialize like an insect. There is power in being a generalist; it doesn’t mean that you’re mediocre at all things. Taking a 30,000ft view and connecting the dots. Steve Jobs was a generalist. 21:04 Being an entrepreneur does not mean you’re necessarily running your own company. (tought by Tim’s short anecdote)
"A teacher who wanted his students to be better than he was." I want sons (eventually) and that is exactly what I have been planning on making sure happens.
3:51 The Beer Test = would you want to go out and have beer with this person at least once a week? If the answer is not, you shouldn’t invest. (the most successful VC’s who Tim knows use this technique) 4:22 Split testing (product design) 5:10 The best thing the government can do in improving and encouraging entreprenuership is to stay out of the way. #2 is the facilitate business creation (I.e. JOBS Act). Visa sponsorship and making easy for smaller companies.
I will guess 'darting speech' is a rate of production of syllables that changes greatly. His words speed up and slow down over a greater range of speed than usual. I have no trouble with it but I suspect that if you grow up listening to only steady speech, Tim may be hard to understand.
19:35 Start by writing the skeleton and planning the very beginning and the very end, then work your way in. Improve your writing by working with a very good editor. They don’t even have to be a writer per se, it’s actually easy to get very good feedback from lawyers or trained debators. They’re good at spotting inconsistencies and puffery. Improve your writing, and everything else improves.
The main issue here was that the two interviewers hadn't actually read any of Tim's books. And the reason he was wearing coat is because it was damn cold in there, similar to a church - I was wearing my jacket and gloves.
15:58 You need someone’s *attention* before you can deliver any type of message. You have to in many cases give people *sensational stories* in a world of infinite noise, to get their attention for 5 seconds so that you can slip in something you think they need to know. (content extremes) 16:30 Once a workaholic, always a workaholic. It’s a condition you have to manage. It doesn’t just go away.
Great use of satirical irony. My only criticism would be that you were too obvious, suggesting someone, who you do not know, is condescending by calling them pompous is just so obviously satire. Still, kudos.
No harm. They seem to be disinterested, all over the place, they lack passion for what they are doing or what Mr. Ferriss has been able to do. They just don't get it.
His speech patterns and facial ticks make me think he is using some type of stimulant. My guess is Provigil. Call me crazy.... I just call it like I see it.
Government should get out of the way...yeah cos management is absolutely known for taking care of the workforce without legislation. No trickle down doesn't work.

"Assume 'no' is the starting point". Boy is THAT true, and the absolute need to practice.

+DEREKinNYC It's a British thing! (Live in UK)
we British are listening intently- that's just how we are. He's an inspiration:-)

It definitely seems that way!

Does anyone know in which year this took part?
the title is wrong, he didn't present this at Oxford, it was Hogwort's.

Your not crazy. He admits he has messed with a lot of "smart drugs" in a podcast w Joe Rogan.

Guys , lot's are talking about GDMFX.This forex broker is most talked right now especially their nice trading platform.
I agree. He's talked before about being 'aggressive' with his experimentations in 'nootropics' and the like.

The girl interviewer is a 10 - she's a bit stuck-up though as you'd expect at Oxford
I find it very hard to listen to this guy speaking. He has fairly darting speech.
Why is Tim wearing a coat indoors?
Because :)
Perhaps he's a bit chilled, with the British weather/air and all.
Government should get out of the way...yeah cos management is absolutely known for taking care of the workforce without legislation. No trickle down doesn't work.
jimstormcrow Governments do not care about work forces only votes. Other wise they would not tax people/workers so high.
bighands69 That is also true to a degree...but really it has taken legislation to protect the meagre rights of workers.
***** So what do you think the answer is Brian?
Myrmidon That Is food for thought....
wow talk about redirected anger from the multi billion suit thiefs, onto a guy trying to encourage people to look at effectiveness differently. lol
