    These are the kinds of LED Christmas tree string lights we use. Ours have 250 lights though. You want them warm white. It doesn't have to be exactly these. It's mostly the number of overall lamps that counts. So you could also get 600 LEDs. On the Christmas tree itself in the video we had 1.500 LEDs.

    Also using the meter on the camera helps i find when i get it in the middle i know i have the right exposure. If i have it too far to the left it’s underexposed, too far to the right is overexposed

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  3 роки тому

      Hey Bryan. Funny - one of our clients is Austrias biggest commercial christmas decorator (for malls, cities, etc.) so it would usually be rather easy. But since we are in lockdown, things are a bit different this year. I could go out as a photographer, but the malls are closed and other than that we don’t have the christmas decoration you have. But the process is very similar to the indoor tree, just wait for the so-called blue hour and a clear sky + snow if possible.

    Last night I went outside to take pictures of the wife and I because it snowed. I said “I didn’t want Wolf’s video but I’ll figure it out” only because I didnt expect to have the opportunity to have snow and lights ...well. I used flash and didn’t like it and then used a slooow shutter speed. It came out ok with my tripod but I know my ISO would have saved me. Maybe next winter, lessoned learned - when Wolf post you watch

      @@wolfamri oh definitely. It would look awkward looking down at my phone to release the shutter. Lol also I decorate with colored LED lights. What's the best way to bring out the color. But also bring out the trees branches as well. I either washout the lights trying to show the branches or bring out the color of the lights but the the tree branches are undersexposed.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  3 роки тому +1

      If you want the branches to be lit, you need to add some light. Either ambient room light, or flash. I plan to deal with that in part 2. It’s a little advanced because you need to clor correct and maybe also add ND filters to not over expose.

    In my country Christmas trees have candles on them. Not those boring light chains.
    And my main tool is the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 Art!
    Another important tool is a custom white balance.
    And I often leave (some of) the room light on to get better image quality and better shutter times.
    And I often get very good results.
    In the film days everything was much harder. The only way to get good colours (and I don't like black & white!) was to use several KB (Korrektur Blau) filters which would necessitate even longer exposures.

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  Рік тому

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer Рік тому +1

      @@wolfamri I think candlelight has a colour temperature around 1500˚ Kelvin, and my cameras don't have a setting lower than 2500˚. Mixing in some electric light helps a lot, but nevertheless I always set a custom white balance. I could get quite neutral colours that way, even without added electric light, but like you I prefer a slightly more red/yellow look.

    • @wolfamri

      I'm afraid I cannot help in this regard. I already answered your question under the iris video:
      I'm afraid I only ever read german books and even there only a very technical one that I needed to learn for my exam. Did you have a look at reviews?
      Personally I think a good video can make you understand photography much quicker than a book, because it can show you samples and animations, but I may be biased 😁

    How to take good pictures of the Christmas tree during the daytime lights on?

    • @wolfamri
      @wolfamri  2 роки тому

      Hey Jessica. I'm afraid that is very cumbersome. The daylight is overpowering the lights of the Bhristmas tree and you would have to set the camera for that daylight to not over expose the shot. So the lights will be hardly visible.
      The only chance would be to reduce the daylight (with blinds), or if you work very professional with ND gel filters sticked to the window from outside (but that's how the huge pro companies would do it if they needed a similar shot).
