The Italians had some badass special forces in the war, if they only focused on having a higher-quality volunteer military and more meritocratic officer corps folks might have had a better perception of them.
Too bad not many of their generals are competent enough to allow their men to get valor and achievements

How were they knocked out? They were repaired and back at sea in a few months. It was a propaganda move to buff rock bottom morale because of Italy's awful military track record. Italy could barely conquer a third world African country and failed at every single aspect of the war. Even at their strongest at the beginning of the war of North Africa they lost their entire army to a British force that was out numbered five to one and had to be bailed out by the Germans.
Yes, they battleships were damaged only for short time - but it were crucial months leading up to Battle of El Alamein, landings in Morocco and Algeria and Guadalacanal campaign in the Pacific... as well as the fatedul PQ-17 convoy. Allies needed every ship in that moment of war! Yeah Italy war effort was mostly failure but this one action was nothing short of magnificent.

Fortunately the Royal Navy did not fight the Japanese much after they were pushed out of the Pacific. As a naval historian (Richard Worth) wrote, "It was also had the good fortune to avoid a decisive engagement with the Japanese, whose capabilities meshed precisely with British weaknesses." (mostly refering to carrier fleet opperations) "Fleets of World War II" Richard Worth ISBN 0-306-81116-2. It's an interesting comparison of the wepons and ships of all the fleets of World War Two, a good reference IMHO.

dear WG, we all know it's easier to do naval legends on U.S. ships because they are still intact (museums), but please make more of the IJNs, kriegsmarine, italian, and birtish navies. i wouldn't mind seeing computer generated ships while you deliver their specs and features. what's important here is the rich history of these mighty ships driven by the men and woman of WW2 regardless of sides (good or evil), and i think those glories and hardships deserve some of your naval legends love.

war crimes were committed not only by Germany. We all know what Germans did, and we all think that it was an evil action. But also other nations and soldier belonging to other nations committed crimes. Thinking that in a war there are "good vs evil" is wrong

There are just two sides at war.
It’s bound both sides will do unspeakable actions for the sake of inching closer to victory, even if completely inhumane - its war people are ordered to kill each other, so that the survivors can return home.
Thankfully there are exceptions where the Japanese Yukikaze saved casualties from a sinking ship, during the fall of Hong Kong, or the RN saving sailors from Bismarck.
Unfortunately history is almost always determined by the “victor” and thus highly bias at most cases.
I mean look at the history channel with their ww2. Its mostly just nerdy historians and pilots from their point of view. There are only a few exceptions such as Bismarck and Yamato that aren’t bias.
WG clearly gets collection of both sides and point of view. If not in a single video, then perhaps in other videos of different nations.
The inventor of the SLC, Teseo Tesei a navy officer, sacrificed himself and the second officer on his last SLC mission by setting the timer to zero.
Some technical difficulties slowed down a SLC mission on a british naval base in Malta and the whole following operation would have failed if his explosives detonated too late.
There are testimonies that he announced this eventuality before submerging in case his SLC was going late.
He was posthumously awarded with the highest medal of honour along with the second in comand Alcide Pedretti.

Because the video lack some detail about the mission in the Alessandria's bay I feel the need to add something that some of you can find interesting, Luigi Durand De La Penne and his companions where captured after the charges was placed, mostly due to malfunctioning of the gears or in the De La Penne case because exhausted after dragging the "Maiale" alone, after been captured De La Penne and his companion was putted by the Captain Sir Charles Morgan in the ammunition compartment of one of the mined ship with the condition to say where the charges where or share the fate of the ship, they didnt reveal the location of the charges but at few minutes from the explosion De La Penne ask to speak with Morgan, he told him that the ship was mined, and they have to evacuate the ship to save the life of the sailor on board, was too late to remove the charges, so Morgan did, someone can think that the one from De La Penn was an attempt to save his own life, but the condition for his release was to tell where the charge was to save the whole ship not (only) the sailors, so De La Penne stayed on the ship with his companion while the English sailor were leaving, he miraculously survived the explosion. After many years from the end of the war, was appointed with the the highest award from the Italian navy (the gold medal to the valor) the one that handed the medal was Charles Morgan in person (at that time Admiral)

It was a Soviet idea. The first Soviet nuclear subs were supposed to carry a single, huge nuclear torpedo intended to attack enemy ports. However, the idea was abandoned as impractical.

I read a book about this raid 20 years ago but this is the first time that i saw a movie about it. Thank you WG for this 10 minutes of enjoyment! Well done.
The commander Durand De La Penne was captured by the english and segregated close to the ammo storage of the Valiant, over the charge that he had placed. Shortly before the detonation he revealed to the Capitain sir Charles Morgan, commander of the Valiant, the existance of the charge so that the ship could be evacuated. But he was left there! He survived the blast and was awarded with the gold medal of honor in Italy and was sir Charles Morgan that gave him the medal in march 1945.
As usual, italian lost the war in mediterranian sea due to themselves. The brits had always news about the moving of convoys, data and times, from italians traytors...also in the Taranto attack the britains known exactly the deep of the nets for torpedoes protections...and the locations of AA weapons...what a easy way to win a war. This is history and we can only accept that. The Italians soldiers fought bravely, but the chiefs and politicians...poor Italy...then and now!
There had not been any italian traitor giving the data of convoys to the Brits. They kew them thanks to Ultra, since the Germans (whose supplies were carried on those very same convoys) were so kind to transmit all those informations encripted with Enigma. Moreover, since the Germans couldn't think that their communications were decrypted by the Brits, they blamed the Italians for the information leaks. For the same reason (the Germans transmitted the decrypted messages, re-encrypted with Enigma) the Brits realized that the Italians broke the US diplomatic "Black Code" and warned the Americans.
However for all the duration of the war in N.Africa, Italian convoys never had a % of success inferior to 70%, and often had been close to 100%. British convoys to Malta had been much more severely mauled.
Neutron Alchemist after Matapan Cape Battle defeat, we Italians abandoned Enigma German decoding device (evidently we suspected it was leaked by Allies) and adopted a Secret Code of our own. Allies were uncapable to decoding it for the rest of the war. 😎

Actually the Italian Navy could take control of the mediterrean, but the only problem was the lack of communication between Air Force and Navy and of oil. Italian naval bombers were excellent and better than the British, also submarines.
If Italy had more oil, Axis could actually have way more chance to win the war

This isn't so much a Human Torpedo as it is a Submersible Boatercycle for delivering mines.
3 kts and 4 kts torp? even if i drop such torp closer to target, world war 3 will end before that thing could even reach there.
Fastest ships of that time were 45 knots. Dont believe war was like in WoW... i like the game but it's really fantastic... and thats not saying much. Real naval war is a lot more slow and boring.
Also... they crossed the mediterranean sea in 4 days. that's really fast, considering the war lasted 5 YEARS.
Is not a "torp" anyway. Its used to put bombs on non movile targest... why you need the 5000000 km per hour WoW torp speed for that?
You don't even need to be as maneuverable as in WoWS to dodge this 'torpedo'... 3knots is literally walking speed.
Naval warfare in WW2 can't really be described as anything, as it were mostly aircraft who did the jobs, not the actual ship itself.
On a side note, WoWS torps aren't even that fast - considering the ships can steer like Formula 1 coming in an U turn while the torps speed are actually close to real life.
Just think about it...how can you guys pretend a faster torpedo if the drivers are not even covered with a submergence depth of 30 meters? Are you nuts?
You know this thing was not deployed against moving ships right? Did you miss the part in the video where it specifically stated that it was designed to attack immobile vessels in their OWN PORTS. What part of that did you NOT understand? Was it too complex?
Of course it was too damned slow to use against ships on the move, or in open water, thats is NOT WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR. It was designed fo allow for a stealthy insertion into a hostile port in order to lay explosives on or under high value targets within the port, NOT to attack destroyers at flank speed on the open ocean.
3 - 4 knots was plenty for what it needed to do, they were carried into position on a mother vessel and dropped a few miles from the target, they only made the final insertion run under their own power (usually).
3kn is still too slow for practical use, imagine a person walking albeit underwater. How close the mothership has to be to a hostile port to deploy these 'torpedoes' and retrieve them in a reasonable timeframe. I believe by the time they return a few of them will have died from the lack of whatever, the survivors will recognize this 'stealthy insertion' wasn't really stealthy and their ship is now a new home for the fish.
Why wouldn't you shell or torpedo the shit out your target with ten different types of munitions when you're only a few miles away from the target. Being only that far away the enemy must be blind to not notice your presence, 'stealthy insertion' or guns blazing.

Roy, the last troops to surrender in North Africa were the Italian troops. Under superb leadership, the Italians could fight well and they held up the British Eighth Army right up to their surrender .
