Good one!! I spent my life trying to follow my passion. I ended up a gay suicidal alcoholic. But I had passion! Now I follow His Passion and I have peace and can love others with God's grace.
I was gay before I was catholic, I'm still gay now. After I became catholic, though, I found a greater desire for better things.

The Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit, if many churches are correct. If many churches are correct, the Trinity is a Family-- two Parents and a Progeny, similar to a human family.(Humans are made in the "likeness" and "image" of God according to Genesis 1:26, although the human author of Genesis probably didn't know about the Trinity when he wrote Genesis) In the book of Job, which is in the Bible, God is compared to a father and a mother with a womb "From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens?"-Job 38:29. Because we can think of God as like a mother (Isaiah 42:14, Isaiah 66:13, Matthew 23:37, Catechism of the Catholic Church 2nd edition paragraph 239), all three roles(Father,Mother,Progeny) in a basic human family are filled in the Trinity. Saying that the Father and the Son are the Parents of the Holy Spirit is another way of saying "the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son" which has been official Catholic teaching for centuries. The Church teaches that the Son is begotten by the Father. If this is correct, the Father is the Father(Parent) of the Son. The Church teaches that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. If this is correct, the Father and the Son are Parents of the Holy Spirit. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (second edition) paragraph 246 says that the Holy Spirit's "nature and subsistence" is "at once...from the Father and the Son."If the Church calls Mary mother(parent) of God even if Mary isn't the first source of Christ's humanity(God is the first source), then the Son can also be called a Parent of God (the Holy Spirit). If the Church is correct, the Father is the principle-Parent and the Son is the begotten-Parent. The scriptures are vague if the Holy Spirit is the Second or Third Person of the Trinity, whichever of these is true, the First and the Second may be the Parents of the Third. Parent definition from Merriam-Webster dictionary: One that begets or brings forth offspring. Principle means base/foundation/first-source/first-origin/root-cause. Stay indoors to avoid flu and coronavirus. Stay indoors to avoid coronavirus and flu.
There is another side to this argument. Most people DON'T follow their passion. They do what everyone else expects them to do. They go to college while accumulating enormous amounts of debt and then graduate to only discover that either they can't get a job in their field or the job doesn't pay what they thought it would or isn't as fulfilling as they thought it would be. Some get married only to discover that their sacrifice is not appreciated leading to either a bad marriage or a divorce. As they grow older, they realize that all the sacrifice of time, money and energy were for nothing. It did not lead to happiness or fulfillment. I think when people say, "Follow your passion", they mean, "Don't make the mistakes that I did". They don't mean, "Follow every one of your heart's desires". There's a difference. The message should be to make better choices and to keep your mind open to possibilities. Things that provide the greatest happiness and fulfillment are not what you think they are. I've heard stories of people who gave up 6 figure salaries to pursue a "passion" like volunteering and they were happy because of it.
College in the US is a scam. But in other countries it isn't.
indeed it is true that there are many ways to approach what passion really is about but the main point of this video is to tell that the true way of living is to live for the Kingdom of Heaven, to live for God and to live for those who are in need, this video is not about living a happy life

I think that by passion most people mean "something that can make you a living, what you can do good and does not cause you to feel miserable".
Religious fanatics see everything through a small and very distorted prism. I did not say "Catholics" or Christians, or religious people.....I said religious fanatics. There are Christians who are just a whacked as Islamic jihadists. Frankly, making career choices based on your interests, needs and goals, and divorcing your unpleasant spouse are not remotely comparable, although divorcing an unpleasant spouse is no problem either. Re-marriage is the problem.

Passion is important especially when God is centre. I'm a mom who is passionate about our faith & helping children learn how valuable & full of potential they are. I went back to school to pursue the essential work of nurturing children's development. I believe passion & God are entertwined when we choose noble work/mission in life. God Bless 👼🌟
I wonder if we all have different concepts or understandings with the term "passion". It seems, when taking into consideration the priest's whole speech, that he is referring to the passion in the pursuit of self-indulgent purposes, as Stephen Johnson above wisely says, it isn't the what but the why, and a lot of us relate the term "passion" with fulfillment yes in our lives but through the service we offer to others, through our participation in our community which is not self-indulgent. I don't think the priest is referring to "don't pursue happiness", or "don't BE passionate", he is being passionate right there in his video giving his advice. I think he means, don't trust your whole realm of "passions" as your guiding post in life, because passions can sometimes be misleading which is so true, but trust "Christ" as your guiding post in applying those passions for the benefit of His kingdom.
You can follow your passion. If your passion is to follow the passion of Christ.
Fortunately my passion was serving the church as a musician. I worked over 50 year. I worshiped as I prepared music for as many as 7 Sunday liturgies each week. At 72 I still love the life I’ve had. I get up everyday and it’s a thrill that I constantly prepare my part of the liturgy, so this old man can tell you that I can’t imagine my life without serving the church with my passion.
I have been cut to heart by this sermon Father! I graduated over 10 years ago, but I'm thankful to be reminded by you that I'm not here for self fulfillment as the world tells us, but for the service of the Kingdom as a follower of Christ!

This video was so helpful because I didn't enjoy exactly what I was doing and it kept bothering me. But now that I understood it's not about my plans and my ways but His plan and ways.

Jesus is the fulfilment and embodiment of Gods Holy and righteous act or dikaioma, and also the embodiment of our act and faith trust and obedience towards God. He stood in our place, taking our cause upon him, also as the Believer, as the Obedient One who was himself justified before God as his beloved Son in whom he was well pleased.
He offered to God a perfect confidence and trust, a perfect faith and response which we are unable to offer, and he appropriated all Gods blessings which we were unable to appropriate.

Another Franciscan said that a good guide to determine what to do in life was that: 1) you like what you do 2) you are good at it 3) it is needed and does good to society and serves the kingdom of God. I think Father Casey talked about #3 here, but I think #1 is important as well. I experienced this the hard way. I used to work in an area I did not liked. It was hard to get the motivation. I was doing terrible. Now I work in something I like and I work hard without having to think much about motivating myself. I perform much better than in the other job I don't like. For #2, I love basketball, but I am terrible at it. I can't pursue a career in that even though I love it. I think having all 3 above are a powerful combination.
This was mind-blowing thought. When i was in school, my passion was Astronomy. But as i grown up and realized astronomy is more or less extreme mathematics, my passion changed. But i never noticed that passions are changing over time. So what i thinking was that it is easy to get success without any struggles if i follow the passion. But in short, there is no such shortcut to success. One should do the right things he should do at the right times, and give the rest to His hands. Some Sacrifice is always necessary for success. Hope i will finish the graduation by next semester.
I don't want to dog pile, but I've only heard the 'follow your passion' thing in my personal life from people who made most of their choices (marriage, work) out of a sense of societal obligation rather than out of a sense of vocation, or a sense of the sealed orders we may find without our natures during things like examen.
It's still totally valid what you are saying… I wish some people in my life had been less into this idea of not making those same mistakes and wouldn't have such high expectations, because life isn't about career, but about helping the poor and knowing God's heart. But idk, just my two cents. Thank you Father for your youtube videos!

Woah, this hits me quite hard. When I first became a Christian, I began to notice that my passion for things I've always been passionate about - my hobbies and field of study - have been diminishing and it just felt like something wrong and I should not let it continue. Now I begin to see that it is perhaps a blessing.
I have just graduated as a computer science major, and this talk about passion got me good. Like I have been struggling deeply with securing a job position. and my economic stability has been put into risk (together with my mental health). Luckily family members reach out to me in order to help me out in this desperate times, the fact that I have been struggling to get a foot of myself now with the pandemic makes me feel guilty for having to lean on them so much and for such a long time during this chaotic time. The fact that I was trying to only get a job in software developing and nothing else has limited my options in a now more than an ever-complex world where despite there being so many jobs out there to work remotely in my field, the accessibility to them is not as easy for a recent grad.
I am constantly trying to apply myself and rediscover myself as I keep applying for jobs, and put my pride on my "passion" on the side, it is more important at this moment to focus on how can I get economic stability back in these times and focus on how I can make a stand for myself in these difficult times while stop being an economic burden to my family. I have since been more open to new job opportunities, from teaching to IT assistance or data entry, honestly have been considering to settle for any job, but after having worked as cleaning crew and restaurants I believe at least that those kinds of job would only distract me and help me just barely to get my economic stability back. But should I even consider those? I don't know, I feel like I would be trapped not searching for anything better if i go back to one of those.
. Not much luck right now, but I will try persevering and supporting myself in god to keep growing in faith and as a professional and will try to put not only my passion but others in my decision of what to do and where to work and where to put my energy in.
thank you for these videos they really open my eyes about how I can better act out my faith and have helped me dive deeper into what God wants me to do in my life. I have never gotten a basic understanding of Catholicism until now.

One of the main tenants of Buddhism which was established 800+ years before Christ, is "Desire is the cause of all unhappiness". Words to live by regardless of who said them.
I watched this video in the past atleast two or three times, but now that I actually graduated it hit differently.
My passion is making music. I always did. I always will. And if there might come a day that I can't make music anymore, the music still will go on in my mind as it already did during my childhood. Something I am always been grateful for.
It's for a reason that huge groups of angels often are described as "choirs". I hope to believe that this passion was meant to be a "hallel" , meant to praise the Lord Jesus. But I might be wrong, of course.

Yeah , true. but somethings people can misunderstand you. His point is passion as an emotion feelings that can change everyday. I think he talk about strong determination and decision to follow god willing not our will ( sometimes is the opposite). He talks about the pros and cons of our decisions and their impact in the kingdom of God.
That was one of the most powerful and inspirational speech I've heard.

Ive heard may things throughout my life regarding; do what you like and never work a day in your life, but I always had a tendency to feel for some reason there was something wrong with the Phrase, though it sounded very nice. Its true, society tells us to follow our passion, and do extraordinary things like famous people of the past- we have to be exceptional. I feel this pressure as a recent graduate, i have to find some job that will change the world etc.. the more normal things in life are underrated: being a parent, partner, friend, holding down a normal job- and at the end of your life you can be proud that you committed yourself to the people around you, rather than to chasing something exceptional. I long for a simple kind of life like this- somehow it seems out of reach though
I think it is ok to have a passion but keep it in perspective . For example I brought back my old college sports radio show as a podcast , which I enjoy doing , but I know when this pandemic is over I have to find a way to prioritize things . Thanks Mike Rowe. I play. I mean, I think that's where you got the idea, but you totally reframed it based on Messiah so well done; good advice. Even better advice than simply following His Passion, rather let following Him become your passion and then do that. Passion is powerful and useful, but we must take responsibility for our passion. In context of following passion for direction in life, I do not think "passion" is an emotion which is difficult to resist; but in such context the word "passion" refers to something deeper regarding our values. Let Messiah and following-Messiah be our passion.

He can use us in many things, to be a blessing to anyone. There are days when I don't feel passionate about my passion. That's resistance. And it's in those days when we learn if something is our true calling or not.
That could be because you lack discipline. When you lack discipline you don’t feel motivated to do much of anything even what you are passionate about deep down

Where were you 45 years ago when I just graduated from high school? Seriously, though, I really wish I would have heard this way back then. if I had I would have gone into college with a much better perspective, with my eyes opened to the world and it's evils. If one person, only one, takes this to heart and lets God direct their life instead of their own passions, you will have done a great service for the Lord!
It totally depends upon one's definition of "passion". The Catholic point of view is always one of choosing "suffering" here on earth, caring mostly for "God's kingdom" and getting there to spend eternity with Him. So, "don't follow your passion"; choose suffering!
Yeah I'm an atheist lurking around, just curious about people. But I'm so glad I don't need the concept of God, to be a human or to think or care deeply. Life without any gods is so free and flexible, with all the love and wonder within. I don't need to think about punishments to be caring or good. I care none for the kingdom of God.. I'm sorry if I come off offensive, I just really disagree with most religions but I still can appreciate what they offer to people.

Joseph Campbell said "Follow your bliss." But Christ was the ultimate example for us, since he made the ultimate sacrifice on the cross. You are so right, the New Age follow your bliss movement has lead to unemployed liberal arts majors and millennials not concerned with practical matters and practical degrees. And we have a vaporous, shallow society and culture and economy as a reward. Brilliant speech , thanks Father Casey.
I don't disagree with a thing you said. However, I don't see it's relevance to commencement addresses. When people say say "Follow your passion" or "follow your bliss" in that context, all they mean is do something that will fulfill your need to serve,, exploit your talents, earn for you a decent living, and enable you to look in the mirror in the morning without wanting to blow your brains all over the shower stall. There isn't anything "new age" about it. BTW, there is no degree more universally useful than a Liberal Arts degree. A Liberal Arts degree is a well rounded education that is a step ahead for you, no matter what field you eventually go into. It's perfect for young people who are undecided about what their future looks like. You have credits in EVERYTHING so if you decide to get another degree, you're probably already half way through your new program at the start. Did you know that many Priests had secular degrees in things like Sociology, psychology, business, and liberal arts before going into the Seminary?
@@efandmk3382 correct but our society did not prepare jobs for liberal arts graduates. Millennials have low net worth and their grounding in the classics was nil. A job in academia means starvation. A deeper bliss is what Joseph Campbell intended , but it is frequently confused and coopted by New Age types to adopt sensory hedonism. Thanks for correcting the errors in my comment.

Thing is, there are many ways to help those around us, and picking the "right one" is what varies from person to person.
I know that I am willing to work really hard, but idk what I want to focus on. Really, as long as I am financially stable and have enough time to exercise, pray, pay bills (or whatever it is that adults do in their free time), and sleep (which is only like 6.7 hrs) I'll be fine. But I do not know what I want to do in my waking hours, especially since the typical adult spends like 1/3 of their day for the next 30 - 40 yrs of their life working.

Dear Fr Casey, I’m a young priest too and sometimes I’ll see your videos. Greetings for your UA-cam channel.
Just I want to say something that I think may be a contribution for this video in particular. Is some much true that we have to seek HIS PASSION. In that sense, I think that seeking HIS PASSION is finally love like He love as you say. So is in the prayer, in the privileged encounter with Christ in the Mass, in the constant great experience of the sacrament of reconciliation and finally in the daily presence of God in our life, that we can hear his voice and do what He wants for us, for our life loving service to God and to our brothers and sisters. And when we have this certainty as you and I have with our call to the priesthood , we have to be very passionate as He was when He dwell with us. Christ gives he’s life in a infinite love, His love was carnal because He gave and give all his body, that’s why we named this particular moment of the life of Christ, the Passion, but also it was fully committed, because as he said he was our friend and also and most importantly his love was completely radical, He gave us all. Summarizing, his love was the truest and fully LOVE, Passionate, committed and radical as they say Eros, Filia and Agape. In that sense yes we have to follow our passion but in his passion. “Love and then do as you want” said Saint Augustine.

People need to understand, that there are different kinds of graces given to each of us. No matter what's your "Passion" It's how you respond to the graces given to you. Not all have the graces to work in a senior home and change the diapers of elderly people and not all have the graces to develop world changing inventions. Of course if someone who has the graces of being a great leader, instead uses it to benefit himself, he might be in trouble.

I wish that I heard this when I graduated in 2014. I was actually the valedictorian of my high school and my speech was just a mixture of what I had been told. A lot of it, I don't agree with now. I had to learn some of the things you're saying through suffering. I look back at my graduation speech and cringe. I also cringe because I had a terrible stutter and I didn't even follow my written speech completely because I was so nervous and my mind was scattered. I am ashamed of my graduation speech and wish that I could do it again with what I know now. One thing that I do like about my graduation speech is that I quoted the last part of Matthew 6. I didn't actually follow that and I suffered for it. I am not sure if my younger self would have listened to this speech. Sometimes we have to learn through suffering before we'll listen to wisdom.
I think there's a huge difference between changing career and leaving your husband. You just have brought up something what's wrong (leaving a husband) to prove that other thing is also bad. There's nothing wrong in changing career if it doesn't make you unable to provide for your family. You don't hurt anyone and avoid doing sth you hate to do, what's wrong about it?
Judging from his context, I think he means you shouldn’t quit a job because you’re not passionate about it. Yes, if there is a specific reason to quit, then of course quit. But don’t quit because you’re not passionate.
The point is not the end result, it's the logic that underlies it: when something becomes difficult, just leave it for something else. There's nothing wrong with leaving a job, per se.
