@@danielfife348 Hill's was OK, nothing special really. Had popcorn machines in the front of the store, so it always smelled like a cheap carnival. There were three different discount chains in PA when we moved here in the late 80's -- Hill's, Lane's/LaneCo, and GeeBee (Glosser Brothers), and now there's one -- Walmart. Ames built a huge new distribution center just north of Reading, PA not long before they went out of business, maybe 5 years of use out of the facility. Their management wasn't very bright, but to be fair, neither was my employer at the time, Woolworth Corporation...

      @Samspianopage 7 років тому +18

      That's Corporations for ye mate.
They start getting too big for their boots and start looking to the stratosphere and thinking they can saturate the market, look at what Walmart has done.
Of course what they don't always realize is that by doing that they're taking on huge extra amounts of outlay and overhead that they might not be able to afford, and the areas they choose to buy might not be right for their brand.
You normally find the successful shops tend to choose their markets carefully and only build in areas they know their customer base, aka John Lewis and Frasers dept stores here in Glasgow, Scotland where there are a wide mix of people.
However you wouldny find a Harrod's here because they're a fortune for even the smallest things LOL so they build where the dosh is there to be spent, London.
Plus management at these companies is often daft and doesn't have direct access to the locations they buy (I bet they don't even go there to check them out for themselves before they aqquire them), they rely on their inside minions to select places by analyzing stuff but it's like a committee thing and you don't have one person and their lower team coming together to judge the next business decision. Can't blame them we've all done it, hey that's great we'll buy 20 stores but hawd on what's that gonna do to us in 10 years time if 10 of em are losing money and we have to sell them wasting all that dosh we put in.
Also these corporations start to get involved in stuff that had hee-haw to do with what the company was about which could add too much heft to the amount of stuff they have to manage that they might not have alot of knowledge about, hence they need to slim down and restructure, you see it all the time in businesses.

we had a Ames store open in Largo Florida after they bought out Zayres , they ended up closing the store in 1992 with out warning and a lot of my friends lost their jobs . Most of them never got their last pay checks . I remember my friends going to work on Monday and the doors being locked with a big sign saying closed . The manager never called anyone about why it closed . The store stayed fully stocked for over 5 years , until the owner of the building was able to get a court order to clear it out "they stop paying rent the year it closed " K-mart rented the place , but not to open a store " they had one across the street" but to stop Wal-mart from getting the location.

Fun fact, Zayre still exists. They sold of their general merchandise store to Ames. But they kept their discount chain, Marshall's. They then purchased TJMaxx and changed their company name to TJX Companies. So Zayre lives on to this day under the TJMaxx/Marshall's/Home Goods name. Fun fact number two...Wolworths still exists as Foot Locker.

My house burned down in september 2001 when I was 5, one of the cashier's at the one near me donated a bunch of Jurassic Park toys to me since I had lost all mine in the fire. Having lived close to three Ames stores, I can tell you the downfalls of Ames at least in my area.
First off, all the Ames around me did not have the same amount of stuff in it as a k-mart or even wal mart. This was due to locations being smaller than k-marts and wal marts of the area.
Second they did little or no expansion into food. While k-marts went into a slight food selection, Ames around here had none besides maybe candy at the checkout. A lot of k-marts here have become big k-marts where you can at least buy some food and all wal-marts have become supercenters.
Lastly, even months before when the last Ames around here closed down, it looked and felt like the 80's. The decor inside was old, the stores looked old in a bad way. Shopping in there felt like I was shopping at a cheap store. At least with wal-mart, they attempted to make the decor look more inviting. Although it took awhile for target to get here, target still is the nicest.
Also the other problem with buying Hills is they were literally the same store of the same quality. Hills was the same store as Ames so buying them was just to eliminate a competitor and not to improve their stores. Hills would of eventually died off so they would of been better focusing on improving their stores.

I just watched your video for the first time and would like to give you some feedback. The Ames in Baltimore that Dan Bell featured is 10 minutes from my house. This store was originally a Zayres and surprisingly is still standing. The entire shopping center (named Diamond Point Plaza) is abandoned except for a discount furniture store on the far left side which is a totally separate building. It was originally a Sams Club but was only open for 4 years before they moved to a bigger location about 5 miles away. The shopping center parking lot is used as an open air flea market on the weekends. I believe once the furniture stores lease runs out, they will demolish the whole thing. While your history of Ames was pretty accurate, I was totally surprised that you didn't mention one of their key acquisitions was the 1985 purchase of G C Murphy Co. Ames bought the whole company but only wanted the Murphy's Mart stores. This purchase almost doubled the number of Ames locations. They rapidly sold the small G C Murphy dime stores to Mc Crorys. I actually worked for the Murphy's Mart location in Eastpoint Mall ( see Dan Bells video on it ) which is less than 1 mile from the Ames shopping center. I was an assistant manager and quit just after 1 and 1/2 years of Ames ownership. I went from working a standard 48 hour managers schedule to working up to 70 hours a week and even more around Christmas with no raise. Ames was horrible to work for.

I grew up in South ridge Mass in the fifties. Going to 'the Ames' was a treat. Two levels, enormous a wonderful adventure. It was not downtown like everything else, but located in an old brick mill building.
So sad when it started to close.

My fiancee and I were driving to Michigan last week for a work trip, and while we were on the Turnpike in Western Pennsylvania (I believe somewhere between Somerset and Allegheny), there was a house that could be seen from the PA Turnpike with an Ames trailer from a tractor trailer in a backyard. It looked well-cared for and letters looked freshly painted. No doubt the person living there must have driven for Ames, but wow, that was quite the relic. My fiancee is from Southern California originally, so he didn't quite get the excitement of seeing that (he understands the nostalgia part of it), but when I told our friends about it yesterday, they geeked out about it. I've watched this video twice, but it never fails to fascinate me about how a store so prominent at one time could take such a massive fall.

Ames bought out Hills and changed them over to the Ames format. They should have done the opposite as Hills was better but in the end it didn't matter. Each new Walmart was another nail in the coffin. Ames closed some of the stores right after the nearby WM opened, not even waiting for the eventual drop in business. Actually, I type this while sitting in a chair purchased from Ames while using one of their "30% off your entire purchase" coupons which was a desperate attempt to lure in shoppers toward the end. They were good for a specific day and that was the only time the store had decent traffic.

No longer. Also fabric stores were a very low cost alternative for window treatments. Now you have to pay through the roof for a decent set of curtains at some specialty shop.

Soon after, we all got called up front and there was a pre-recorded message that we'd be liquidating within days. After it closed it briefly became an Agway (until that franchise decided to consolidate their stores into a large single location). After it sat a few years (and the neighbouring GU was refurbished into Hannafords) it was gutted and turned into a group of stores, only half or less are occupied at any given time.

That Zayre's shown @ 3:45 looks like the one in south Orlando, complete with neon ZAYRE sign missing part of the Y. I bought my first computer there in 1982: a Commodore 64. It was part of the acquisition in '89 (90?) and changed to Ames. It lasted about a year before it closed.😞

This is excellent, absolutely. I was blessed (actually cursed) to have lived near a Zayre that was turned into an Ames. As I recall, everyone knew Zayre as a last resort for shopping, especially as a kid, we all knew Zayre never had any of the good toys. Then one day, our Zayre was an Ames and guess what? Except for the name outdoors, none of us could tell the difference. Nobody shed any kind of tears when all our Zayre/Ames disappeared. It sounds harsh, but now because of your video and the amazing research you share, I can see that we got Ames as it was on the back end of its glory days. Your video explains a lot and actually, now I feel sad for the chain. Everyone concerned seemed to be doing things right, but changing times and a few bad business moves drained it all. Thank you for all your work. I found out more about Ames in 12:25 than I ever thought I would!

Holy shit! 7:37 is my town. As soon as I saw it I was like hold on a second...
Neat. I’m actually gonna go visit our old Ames, as it’s still just there, abandoned and left all alone... We have a mall in our area too that will probably end up on your abandoned series. It’s actually a lot more booming now than it was, say a year or two ago, but I still see it closing eventually.
Anyways, thanks for the great content. It was cool to see a photo from my hometown too.

My friends and I started a series on here back in 2006, barely a year after UA-cam came into existence. We were one of the "OG's" on here and pretty proud of it. Well, last year we were relaunching the channel with a new series and everyone was really excited about it, but all of a sudden UA-cam started deleting our videos from over 10 goddamn years ago and assessing channel strikes. 1 out of every 5000 people who view a video are video-flagging Nazis... doesn't do much damage at first, but you can see how eventually 10 or so years later you'll have enough flags to make UA-cam review your shit for deletion. Then they don't actually REVIEW it... they just fucking delete it. You can "appeal" it, but they limit you to 2 sentences while defending yourself and completely ignore and reject it. So, our new series was cancelled on principal alone. What's the point of moving forward if 10 years from now they'll just delete our videos eventually? Fucking assholes. Not surprised they deleted one of these Abandoned videos... meanwhile, beheadings, porn and racist shit is allowed to stay on the site. Fuck UA-cam. Bitchute and others will eventually take over.

Brockport NY had two Ames stores in separate plazas within 1/2 mile of each other, one was a Zayres previously, which later became a Walmart for a while after the demise of Ames. The original older Ames closed and now is occupied by a Harbor Freight, Big Lots and a Restaurant.

It’s pretty sad when very old and once profitable stores go out of business. I clicked on this video because I actually have some hotwheels from the 80s and 90s with Ames stickers on the package. I finally have a true understanding of the store!

Then sadly you see poverty, gangs, narcotics and crime go up through the nose. Seems like anywhere where there was some kind of failed business venture go by the wayside like in Flint, Michigan or Gary and Michigan City, Indiana.

Pan Am would've went out of business, even without the Lockerbee incident. Same with TWA. The problem is that these companies both had senior management that didn't understand the competition & the changing economics of airlines. They wanted to keep on operating "the old way".

To anyone wondering why it's called Ames, the Ames family is one of the oldest and richest families in the USA. They chose the name to give off a posh and upper-class atmosphere but were so small that they weren't sued.

There were lots and lots of Zayres and Kmart stores in south Florida when I was a little kid in the 80's. There was also a store called "Richway". I remember when they converte all of the Zayres stores into Ames stores. They all closed within 2 years of the conversions. Soon after Ames left Taget took over all of the old Richway stores. Target even bought the old Richway shopping carts. I remember pulling of the Target stickers that covered up the old Richway emblems. Walmart didn't come to South Florida until late 89 - early 90.

I saw on my local news a few months ago that they're supposedly coming back. The new "owner" had to restructure their entire company immediately after buying the name, which leads me to believe they're not really bringing it back, and the whole thing is one big grift that somehow managed to gain media traction. To put it simply, I'll believe it when I see it.
