  • Those who have been around me in some circles probably knew of my prior distaste for the 2013 remakes of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. Some of it lingers, but it was definitely exaggerated.
Thank you for watching! I recently upgraded my sound setup, so I felt like giving it a spin with this video! Let me know what you think!

People can make Special Stages in 2 scroll smoother. The future is now.

Honestly, I don't think I care that much about the classic games, which is probably why I'm kind of indifferent towards most of these changes. It's still is interesting to see the opinion of someone who cares deeply about these games and can notice these differences.

I personally prefer the 3DS versions by M2, they're still ultimately the Genesis versions, not remakes, so the physics and everything with the gameplay is all correct, but it also still adds QOL stuff like the spindash in Sonic 1 if you want it (I personally don't actually but you can turn it off) as well as fixing the spike glitch, which is all I really need. AND it works with the 3D, and honestly the 3D works SO WELL with these classic Sonic games, the way the backgrounds work and everything really lends itself to the 3D effect, it really enhances how they look and is my preferred way to play. It's a shame they stopped after Sonic 2, Sonic CD for example would have gone so hard with 3D support I'd imagine.

ooo M2's remasters are nice! never got to play the 3DS versions, i find those incredibly fascinating
had a go with the AGES versions, but those only showed me that having the drop dash in sonic without getting rid of speed caps and rolling jump lock is a bad idea 😅
interestingly, the M2 versions of sonic 1 have a flaw in their implementation of the spin dash when getting hurt while charging one. makes me wonder if they used the rom hacking guide to implement it

I honestly really hope we get a similar set of remakes for the Advance trilogy someday. As nostalgic as I am for the original releases, they're definitely a fair bit rough around the edges and a re-release would need to address some of the problems to bring these games up to their potential. Expanded view area with widescreen, physics tweaks, special stage retry, adjusted special stage entry requirements in Advance 2 and 3, etc.
I'd bring back the Sonic Origins Coins system, but with some tweaks. They don't replace the life counter, and are obtained differently. When you finish a stage, your held rings get deposited into a sort of bank which you can then spend on coins and 1-ups, 100 rings each. You are effectively given the choice on whether you want to invest into special stage retries via coins, or widen your safety net in regular stages via 1-ups. You don't have to collect 100 rings all in one go to earn 1-ups anymore this way, but you also don't earn them while still in the stage other than via 1-up monitors and score. This should ultimately satisfy the casual crowd who don't want to worry about life counters by giving them ample opportunity to refill their lives as needed while not invalidating the inner workings of how the lives system works with other systems such as score and rings for those who enjoy that aspect of the gameplay. Simply not investing into coins and 1-ups could also function as a sort of challenge mode for those who desire it.
The view area expansion is vital. Widescreen I could live with or without, but things definitely need to be zoomed out a bit. The original GBA versions were limited by the tiny screen size that forced a rather nasty view crunch. This lead to a common issue in which you'd get running fast only to slam right into an enemy and take contact damage or straight into some other hazard like spikes, crushers, ledges, etc. This caused players to need to rely on memory, muscle memory, and in general just having to be overly careful with their speed to avoid getting themselves killed. An expanded screen would allow players to see what's ahead and around them better, making this issue much less prominent.
For the physics, I've always felt like the characters in the Advance trilogy are just a little bit too stiff and heavy. That is to say, the time it takes to go from a standstill to running speed is too long and is especially too slow in the earliest moments of pressing a directional input, and when you get moving fast it becomes needlessly difficult to slow down and especially change direction. These problems are amplified while jumping, making things feel rather needlessly clunky. I'd like to avoid things becoming too fast and floaty, but a nice middle ground that feels more similar to the classic games would be ideal. Something like a modified Mania physics adjusted to suit each individual games level design.
Regarding special stage entry requirements, I'd swap out the special rings in Advance 2 with Red Star Rings instead and have their collection be permanent rather than resetting every time you play through the stage. When you have all of them collected, simply finishing the stage sends you into a special stage if you've not yet completed one in that stage.
In Advance 3, I'd separate out the Chao collection into its own separate thing that rewards you a trophy/achievement and maybe also stuff like concept art for progress and completion. Instead, the special stage keys simply spawn somewhere in the stages by default. With the introduction of the coins system, there's no longer any need to hold onto more than one key for each zone and so you no longer can. Finding a single key and successfully finishing a stage with it will permanently unlock the special stage for that zone. Instead of consuming keys, each special stage attempt costs a single coin. This makes special stage attempts far more readily accessible in general, and much less of a chore to obtain.
For the special stages themselves, it's an absolute must to swap out the fake GBA 3D with real 3D that gives you a true sense of depth and clarity. It was always a pain in the originals having to guess how far away things are in comparison to you and time your movements accordingly. You could adjust given enough time, but remaking these stages in true 3D graphics similar to how the Sonic 2 special stages were handled would make the process a lot more natural and intuitive. I'd try to keep the original aesthetic by keeping the 2D sprites, just place them in a 3D space.

I honestly had the same thoughts about the mobile remakes, it really messed me up with the alterf physics after playing the original mega drive for romhacks so long.
While i myself dont really care anymore about the mobile remakes, i still appreciate that sega allowed fans to create the ports, and it is obvious they were dedicated to make it a great experience. Excellent video!

Honestly, this whole thing is why Origins was so punchable. The Classic-mode/modern mode split could have been an avenue for choosing between the newer recreations and an effort to make it much more accurate to the original releases. Instead it was a mess that was a disservice to both experiences and the only diffrences between the modes are things that should have been toggles instead.(They straight up didn't even get the OST correct, they play one version for both rather than using the remake ost for modern mode and original for classic).
5:59 Hot take(?), the S1 special stages are awful regardless of version. They should have changed them in the remake to be like Sonic 4 Special Stages, which is the same general concept but you are manually rotating the levels. Sega Ages release of the original and ironically Origins version of the remake are superior here purely because you can essencially get infinite tries.
Weirdly, it is kind of an inverse of Sonic 2's problem. S1 special stages have a gameplay type I can't ever enjoy, but decent leveldesign while S2 special stages have a gameplay type I love, but horrendous leveldesign.

    • @giovannidotgen

      >Origins
HARD agree. I will have to look into Origins better, for I've never played it for myself, but expect me to, at some point. I still do believe Origins to be a lesser, overpriced replacement of the Mega Drive releases that used to be on Steam prior. I can praise it for giving you the ability to retry Special Stages.
      >S1 Special Stages
Interesting take, I can see where its coming from. However, I believe that a remake/remaster's priority is to remain as faithful to the original experience as possible. While not being pixel perfect accurate, the Sonic 1 Special Stages in the 2013 version still maintain the original scope, which I believe matters more, for the sake of remaking.

"Sonic Origins" broke my heart at launch because of Sega's meddling with the developers of "Sonic Mania (Plus)", though modders moderately patched the collection up to version 1.5.0/1.05 and somewhat soothed my broken heart. "Sonic Origins (Plus*)" (keyword: 'Plus' with an asterisk next to it) in physical form made me a former "Sonic" fan regarding the pixel art 2D classic games. Overall, the collection (up to ver. 1.5.0/1.05) is fine, but ultimately a disappointment for longtime classic hardcore fans.
It is a shame to see the legacy of the original 2D "Sonic" games get muddied by Sega's greed, and it is a massive shame to see longtime classic hardcore fans write off the original 2D "Sonic" games as complete garbage. Maybe in 10 years or so, the legacy can heal. But right now, those fans will bash the heck out of the 2D collection for initially being an intolerable mess (similar to how the "New Super Mario Bros." sub-series gets bashed for being a redundant mess).

I can understand the feeling, but I do believe them being able to run off of a Mega Drive/an emulator is most impressive.
Additionally, there are some Sonic ROM hacks that change enough of their base games to pretty much be their own games.
I do plan on covering those, so more people know about them: ROM hacking is a fascinating art, and Sonic ROM hackers have managed to deliver some mighty impressive works.
Naturally, I also respect the works of RSDK/Sonic 3 AIR modders: I've seen some wild stuff going on in there, too.
The work of hackers and modders alike is most fascinating.
