This was very pleasant to watch, what with the birds singing, the sun shining, and your relaxed narration. Thanks for another great video.

Thomas, in 1979 you could do EME on 2m with 4 Cushcraft 19 element Boomers & 600w. Rick K8BMA

Awesome. Recently, I have been operating just outside Powhatan (off the road that heads up to the BRP). Tons of places to setup. It really is my favorite area. You get a safe feeling with all of the mountain bikers. But plenty of space to be out of the way and set up the station. Thanks for another cool video. 73 or (72). Cheers, Duncan

You're right: it's a GREAT spot to hit Pisgah NF and Game Lands (in some places). In the early days of POTA, I did activations all up and down that road that crosses the BRP. Many nice spots there. Hope to run into you sometime!

I love my TR-45L skinny! I wish it covered 15m as well.
Just want to thank you for your activation videos, Thomas. I’m brand new to CW and have started activating some parks in large part because of you. I especially love your arborist throw line EFHW videos!

I'm honored. Thank you so much for the kind words! And well-done on your CW journey. That's just brilliant!

24:54 yeah not a lot of activity today, and huge noise floor. Tried hunting up someone activating a park up in Oregon on 20m today with my g90 and efhw vertical. Should’ve been a sure shot since I’m just down in Salt Lake, but I could barely hear him and he definitely couldn’t hear me.
Ah well, band conditions will clear up again soon😊
Thanks for all the great videos!

Band conditions have been in the dumps! I do hope it improves before my Hamvention park roves! :)

Awesome shots of the trees, such a beautiful activation. I believe I logged you on this day, will be interesting to hear how I sound if I made the video. Also love the sounds of the birds in the background. I log with just paper and manually enter the entries at the POTA app page in advanced mode, export to adif and upload that to LoTW. 72 de AI5DD Joe

A tecnique for logging QSO time that I find to be efficient is to log the hour on the first contact, then just the minutes for QSOs that follow. I log the hour again once when it rolls to the next hour. Less writing.

That is very clever! If I can remember in the field, I might give this a go sometime! Thanks, Matt.

    I love it! You’re a great inspiration.
Question: how long is your counterpoise? I can’t seem to figure out what most people use. Thanks!!! (Or do you just use the coax as a counterpoise?)

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  2 місяці тому

I was just using the shield of the feedline as a counterpoise. I do this with all of my EFHW antennas. Nothing wrong with adding a separate counterpoise, though. I just don't bother because it works so effectively as-is.

Many options. I'm a big fan of a 30/40M linked EFHW antenna because it opens the doors to all of the HF bands (40M and up) save 12 meters. That's the antenna I used in this video.

I'm surprised that when you set the link so that your end fed antenna is 1/2 wave long on 30 m, it works (without a tuner) on 17 m. Using the 468/f recipe for a half wave antenna, on 30 m cut for the centre of that (narrow) band the wire should be about 46.22 ft long. For a full wave, using 492 for the two inner quarter waves and 468 for the two outer quarter waves (because end effect doesn't occur except at the actual ends) the recipe becomes 960/f so that 46.22 ft wire should work nicely at about 20.77 MHz and be WAY too short for 17 m, almost short enough for 15 m. Have you actually measured the SWRs on both 30 m and 17 m? The only explanation I can think of for a good SWR when the numbers are this far out is that there must be a lot of loss somewhere.

So both of the times I've trimmed out a 30M EFHW (with the KM4CFT kit and one completly homebrew), it's had a very acceptable SWR on 30 and the 17M CW portion of the band. The transformer is no lossier than the average EFHW. My SWR tends to be 1.5 or lower on 17M. Of course, the 40M extension also gives me excellent SWRs on 40, 20, 15, and 10 M.
Build one and give it a go, David! It's a very useful EF antenna because it works on all bands 40M and up, save 12M.

    Thanks for the video!
I’m new to this, so like if you live in 1 land and go to say 3 land to activate a park…. Do you have to code out your call with a suffix of whatever your area your in? I’m not sure if I am asking this correctly. So say I am XX1XXX and activate in 3 land…. Am I now XX1XXX/3? Thanks for any help guys ❤❤

Great question. No--when you travel between states, there's no regulation that requires adding the new region number. Some do this just to make a point that they're not in their home region. Entirely up to you!
