This process looks much easier than i thought. My s8 active has served me well for 3 years, i have no desire to get a new device
you still got it? I still have mine. Today it finally turned off out of nowhere, thinking of just replacing battery. What do you think?
2024 and my S8 still works! Battery (2017) got a bump, so I simply replaced! That phone will never die! :)
Still have mine and this helped greatly. Battery was swelling and becoming a risk. It's a pity that Samsung discontinued the active series, but now I can keep using this until I am ready to trade up.
They were to good of a phone so they were losing money
thanks man replaced my two year old balooning, overheating, and about-to-explode battery thanks to this vid!
Mine is ballooning too, separating the top portion of the back cover exposing the innards! Replacement is on the way.
Yeah, same here; was very 'puffy' to the extent that the screen was being pushed out.
You are a lifesaver! Went to a little phone repair shop when my phone's battery went out, was told you have to break the screen to get to the battery. He tried sticking me with labor, replacement battery, and a new screen for 250. Seems like homeboy was trying to pull a fast one...
On the s7 active you do...not this one
Several comments on the video. Thanks for making this, it gave me the confidence to replace my wife's battery. That said, there are some errors and omissions.
First, the number of screws and components you need to remove is incorrect. There's no reason to remove the speaker (bottom black block) and therefore, no need to remove it's 3 screws. The small screw on the right center of the phone on top of the metal plate also doesn't need to be removed (the very first screw he points to about 2:15 into the video).
Second, as other's have noted, the part about reassembling the phone leaves out some critical bits.
At about 3:33 you can see him playing with the glue that held the original battery in place. The replacement I bought (from Amazon) came with glue strips to hold the new battery down. It's important to glue the battery in place so it doesn't bang around and damage the phone. At about 3:39 in the video you can see him pressing the battery down to glue it in place. Obviously he left out the bit about putting the glue strips / tape on the battery.
In his case the tape around the edge of the back appears to be somewhat intact. Mine was quite damaged (my battery had bulged quite a bit) so I had to replace it. I pealed off all the sticky (the part you see in grey around the edge of the the back panel at 4:09). There was quite a bit of residue on the phone itself around the edge that I scraped off as well. I then replace it using 2mm wide "phone tape" (search amazon for 2mm phone tape or 2mm double sided electronics repair tape). The tape I bought had a red translucent protective plastic that you peal off after placing the first side down. I put it on the phone rather than the back. I did it in segments, putting tape along the straight sides and bottom, then cutting small pieces diagonally across the curved corners to connect with the pieces on the sides and bottom. In the end, I'm sure my phone is not quite as "water tight" as it was before but that doesn't bother me.
If you look carefully you'll see a couple of black foam sticky tape blocks on the back of the phone as well. I (mostly) covered these in the same 2mm double sided tape before reassembling to help them stick as the remaining foam tape was pretty "dead".
At about 4:10 in the video you can see him plug the fingerprint sensor back in. DON'T FORGET to do this before you seal up the phone or you will be very sad that you have to tear it apart again.
One last thing I did, after the phone was completely reassembled, was to apply just a bit of heat (using a heat gun) to the back of the phone to "activate" the heat sensitive glue. I then pressed on the back for a few seconds as it cooled. To accomplish this I put the phone face (screen) down on a soft cloth and pressed on the back with my open hand to cover the entire back of the phone at once.
I was very happy with my results. The back is on very securely and the battery seems to be working just fine. I'll update my comment if any of that changes over the next few weeks.
Thanks for this, my seal was bad and I didn't know about the double sided thin tape!
@@russalbers1188 I'm glad to hear that my comments helped someone.
Does the fingerprint sensor HAVE to be hooked back up? I don't use the thing anyways and I think I may have damaged mine...
Here to answer my own question: No it doesn't. Obviously any features that require the sensor will be broken but the phone functions perfectly fine without it.
Thanks @Serg Tech for the video and good on you @James Brown, for the additional steps. They were helpful in my battery change. A couple additional notes that you may consider an edit for (since your comment is at root level and has traction).
1. If you use a real heat gun, be aware it's entirely possible to overheat the back cover of this phone even if you're moving it evenly -- it is, after all, made of plastic. I did this and the back cover started warping, opening one side revealing a good sized gap. Just remove the heat source and use the opportunity to get an implement in there for removing the other sides of the back cover. When the cover cools, it returns to form.
2. (this part assumes you too have purchased the 2mm tape James mentions.) Once the back cover is off, the damaged adhesive still attached to the cover appears white-ish and "gummy". If you look close, you'll notice that the adhesive is attached to what looks like a precision cut piece of black tape all the way around the edge. Instead of fighting with the white-ish gummy adhesive, gently use a fresh razor blade to get underneath this black strip (did I mention gently?). Once you're under the black tape, you can peel it off much, much more effectively than mucking with the gummy stuff.
3. Lastly, I bought this stuff from Amazon to reseal the back cover > "Eco-Fused Adhesive Sticker Tape for Use in Cell Phone Repair - 2mm Tape". This tape comes with a pair of tweezers. These tweezers were FANTASTIC for cleaning out the old adhesive prior to laying down fresh stuff.
Again, Thanks James. Helpful indeed.
Thanks for this! It saved my phone from sure death with a swelling OEM battery. I had to replace the back adhesive but otherwise really helpful. I was able to do it without removing the small inner plate at the bottom.
Sweet! Took my 15 minutes total with this tutorial
I just R&R the battery on my S8A Samsung phone. Your video helped a lot. However I had a minor fire when I tried to remove the old battery. Apparently its not a good idea to puncture the aluminum skin of the battery, especially if it is beginning to expand and to overheat prior to replacement. To hold the battery in place, I used some clear liquid Gorilla glue in the perimeter of the cavity that holds the battery.
I also ran into a problem in getting the phone cover to close at the ends of the phone once the new battery was installed; i.e., there was a gap at each end between the cover and the case. On another video it said to be careful to not overheat (I used a hair dryer on hot but at low speed) the perimeter of the case of the phone or the plastic may deform. So I may have overheated the plastic in removing the cover. So, to get the back cover of the phone to close at the ends, I reheated the ends of the phone with the cover attached and pressed down on the ends and they then closed and clicked into place. I also used some of the same Gorilla glue on the inside of the case to help hold the cover in place. However, it was necessary to use some ketone solvent on a cloth to remove the sticky glue that had gotten onto the outside of the cover and on the glass front of the phone. I hope that there will not be a problem with the use of glue inside the phone... The phone is working great now so far and I couldn't have done it without your video. Thanks. MRB
Have you had any bad after effects with using the Gorilla glue? the side buttons sticking, or loosing the water tight feature?
Nice video, thanks. My back came off so easily as my battery had swollen so much, my phone cover was keeping it together!!
Excellent video. Production is very good, among the best! Good verbal descriptions as he progresses. My newest go-to source.
They reeeeeally don't want you to remove that battery...
Doug Bennett Right😂
whatever... you should see the s7 active... remove everything... from the front... to get to the battery
@@Matanumi Yes high risk of destroying expensive screen while replacing battery. Truly bad design
they would rather you spend $999.99 on a new phone
Doug Bennett ikr its bs
This video was excellent. I was able to replace my battery very easily in about 25mins. Thank you.
Thanks for this....Mine is almost 4 years old and the battery has been swolen for awhile to the point the back cover is popped off, but now the screen kills itself and goes dark due to lack of power durings videos or whatver keeps playing...so time for anew battery!
Great videos thanks. So for the Galaxy S8 Active (G892A) I am able to easily find replacement batteries & charging ports but where can i buy the replacement Gasket? What is the Samsung part number? I am referring to the grey gasket as shown in this video that was torn, and stuck on the back cover.
Do i need any other adhesive tapes for the battery to stick in well? If so what brand, type and size? Any recommendations? Thank you.
Thanks for the video; great guide to doing the job right with no muss or fuss.
Probably very few people will use a hot plate, but I thought I'd point out that you said you set your hot plate for 110 *Celsius* to loosen the adhesive on the phone. I think you meant Fahrenheit. Your hot plate was set for 40C, which is actually 104F.
Wow, good catch. I was looking at 110C (which is 230F) hotter than boiling water (212F) I'm glad I didn't try that.
Crap
@@timothykellogg9257 I used 212°F with no issues! 😜🤷♀️👍
Excellent video. Very consice and straight forward.
Very informative and helpful. You really know your Tech. Great tutorial. Thanks for the Help.
Very grateful for this video. The only thing I didn't have was the hair drier for heat but lucky for me the blotted/balloon battery took care of most of the adhesive and I didn't have too hard a time prying. This is the perfect phone for me and charge only goes down to 75% on an average day. I'll never upgrade unless they can make a better (Active) phone.
Fantastic video! You saved all my data and saved me a fortune! When I put it back together, the sound doesn't work. Did I do something?
Does the old adhesive still stick? Or do you need to apply a new adhesive?
Sorry if it is too late, but for the others seeking an answer, I put my old adhesive back on and it stuck just fine.
yes, you can, but keeping the old adhesive is unlikely to be as waterproof as before, so it's always best to replace it
Quick question, wouldn't it be wise to replace any adhesive materials to retain waterproof qualities? Not sure if there was any glue or if any gaskets need completely replaced or recoated with adhesive. Seems logical but it also seems like a lot was done off camera. Extra details would be great thanks.
Wish someone would've answered
@@souporreel6750 The answer is yes, it looks like in his case the adhesive/seal remained intact (except for that one corner). Mine didn't. The guy above said to get 2mm double side stick tape to seal it up if your seal/adhesive is not intact.
@Brad Grant someone created an App for it now
Thank you so much it was really helpful
Glad it helped!
great job! Thanks!!!! Don
wow it should be as easy as on the s5 active, not sure why they made it so complicated. Do you need to replace that silicone gasket? It looked ripped.
Thank you!
There is no need to remove the bottom piece or the SIM/SD card. Careful removal of the back cover followed by removing the wireless charger and attached top plastic/ board is all one needs to access the battery.
Thanks, I wondered why he did that.
can i still repair the screen or battery without changing any of these.
I can't find s8 active battery for sale. Is there any other battery model that is compatible with it? Maybe s7 active? What shoul i do? Thank you!
*cách thay pin điện thoại sam sung galaxy s8 rất hay bạn ơi*
I have had my S8 Active for over three years the battery still lasts me over a day but I am noticing that the battery is starting to swell up. I think I should replace is just because of safety cause I can see a little gap showing towards the bottom of the phone already.
hi, i tried to order battery through tge link you provide it below but seem to be not working .
I know it may sound crazy but can i put a S8 Active on a S8,i know this video was uploaded 2 years ago but i have my old mighty S8 and i want some hardware modification to it.
Hi could you tell me where can I find a new battery for this phone ?I'm living in Morocco. Thank you !
I had to take my apart in order to get my main camera to work : camera flex was off that was causing the issue
Looks like I could do that but, I think I'll find a super smart technician to do it for me. The part about wear gloves to not get burned was my first clue. I like my phone but I like the skin on my hands more.
No issues here... Just used an oven mitt 😜👍
Where can u buy the battery?????
For people asking where to buy batteries. eBay.

Wouldn't you just be able to install a 4000mah battery in the regular s8 or s8 plus????
Anyone know where we can find the s8 active battery?
Description link isnt for the active model and I can't find it anywhere.
Will fitting an s7 active's battery work?

So I changed out my battery and now it wont even charge. It doesnt recognized that its plugged in. Any sugestions?
What about the data that is on the phone? Will it get lost?
The battery is on eBay. The uploaded put it in the description too.
I can't find a battery for my g892a AT&T Galaxy S8 active. Could you please direct me to a site that does? The site in the description does not have one for a Galaxy S8 active, let alone any certain model.
I believe it is the exact same battery as the S7 Active. I checked the battery number on his video and cross referenced it with ebay s7 active replacement batteries.
@@Super6-Four cable coming out of battery is folded. i tried it with the s7 active battery and it worked but after a month the wire tore from being folded to reach connection on motherboard.
elmaestro830 have you found any other battery for s8 active? Do you think the s7 active battery will break again if you keep trying that battery? Thanks.

what difference does that make if your phone is 3 years old like mine. and thats all it needs is a new battery
I just need to know which battery to put in for the s8 active only see 2 listed at the outlet store for s8 s8+?
I had no problem following these instructions, but after having replaced the battery I find that while the screen tells me the battery is charging, it doesn’t charge. What now?
Hello my name is Greco, I have a problem with my phone, this is turn on and then just turn off for nothing, I don`t now what doing
Hi Greco, thanks for letting us all in the comment know your name. My answer to your questions is I don't know.
Maybe is your battery that is already dead.
I've had my s8 since 2017 and only about 2 days ago it started having issues but it's only a bad battery.
This is easier than the s7 active replacement.
WAYYY easier.
I'm upset how they fucked up the s7 active design....since it was such a nicely designed phone
@@Matanumi yea. It's crazy that they took that route for the s7 active.

Go on to Amazon and search for G891 battery or G891A battery.
It wont be official Samsung unfortunately
eBay
Re sell it and its gonna be cheaper, not water resistant anymore..
As people have commented, where the hell can you buy these 4000mah Samsung S8 Active batteries? It's like they built it as a disposable item. Battery dies = Pay Samsung money for a new phone.
that's exactly what samsung wants you to do. spend $999.99 on a new fucking phone

Frozen and unresponsive samsung galaxy s7
I have used my samsung galaxy s7 for 3 weeks, however, it has all of a sudden frozen and won't seem to respond.
