It is better to combine instant thinner with alcohol ، Thinner is the best solution for removing sulfate.
I mostly work with old electronics and this is my go to. Simple green, paint brush, hot water. After washing rinse it with denatured alcohol to displace the water and hit it with compressed air and let it dry for a few hours. If the circuit board is the super old Phenolic type then spray some WD40 onto a rag and wipe it down. As long as you don't saturate it in WD40 it's fine.
Is there any other product you would recommend? What is your go to when it comes to cleaning electronics?
You should try cleaning dry thermal paste off with Denatured. The major advantage of denatured is how fast it can dry with little to no residue.
Will electronics contact cleaner remove water corrosion and general oxidation from contact sockets where ribbon cable connect on a laptop?
Great question. The contact cleaner should work. If that doesn't work you can try a small amount of baking soda and water with a bit of light scrubbing. Just make sure to clean all the baking soda and dry completely before powering on.
Hello @Retro Kevin, in the case I need to remove rust (sulphate) from USB ports, what would you use? I need more information about this due to some people to use isopropyl alcohol, but I want to confirm this option is the right one. Thank you.
USB ports are a little more difficult to clean, just due to their tight space and weird angles.
I would start with the isopropyl /denatured alcohol.
If that isn't enough I'd try either vinegar or baking soda. Both are great at removing rust. Just make sure to fully clean those off and dry everything well before powering on for testing.
Best of luck!
@@RetroKevin Thank you a lot @Retro Kevin, I'm gonna follow your recommendations.

what product do you use for the fluxing? Is it a spray?
If memory serves me correctly, I had a bunch of left over flux paste, I don’t think it was electronics flux. And I used a heat gun to spread and "bake" it on.
99% Alcohol is best for cleaning
