  • I am comparing Deoxit D5 and Nu-Trol contact cleaners. I was totally surprised at the results. Deoxit is made in the USA by CAIG and Nu-Trol is made in Canada by MG Chemicals. Hopefully this video will clear up any questions as to what product may be the best.

    Excellent - I was going to order some DoxIT but I already have a can of Nutrol. I'll use that on my guitar pots and amps.

    Thank you Andy! Hi from Ontario. Appreciate your review on these two products... trying to clean up dirty pots on an old used Fender amp. Hopefully the Nu-Trol will work for me :)

      You won'r be disappointed. On another note though. Deoxit sells a slider lube which I am told is awesome for sliders, faders, etc... It also seems to be just a bit better on volume pots than the regular sparays we are using. I think it has a dielectric grease compound added to make the pots run more smoothly when turning

    We have DeOxit it in the UK but never seen the NuTrol. The DeOxit is very expensive and I have been using it sparingly they also make one designed for fader controls that may be worth the money as it definitely has more lubricant content. Historically I just used servisol or just any other cheap spray can I had on the shelf never noticed any difference between any of them. I guess if you pay the high price for DeOxit your going to believe it’s good. It has the gold audio connector effect. Thanks for sharing my best regards Chris.

      I used to use a cheaper contact cleaner spray but decided to upgrade but also try the Canadian version. Deoxit appears to be an all time favorite. NuTrol is a competitive product no doubt about that.

      Interesting. I learned about Deoxit from snake radio customs videos. He uses it on radios he restores. I recently found the Canadian compliment to that product. Both Deoxit and Nu-Trol work very well. I am most impressed with both products. I am researching a WD40 specialty spray that is also competitive apparently. I don't know if I will be able to get it shipped in but fingers crossed. Thanks for watching Fred.

    I use Nu-Trol Control Cleaner on my guitar amps and electronics. Works every bit as good and is less than half price. A third the price if you get a similar size at B&E Electronics. I have one without lubricant (residue free) for really flushing things out and the regular one with lube for a spritz at the end to keep everything smooth.

    CRC contact cleaner is about 4 bucks a Walmart in USA. I try to use something alcohol based now days, Freon based were better but no longer available. Plastic safe. Don’t like to use cleaner which has lubricant in phenolic or porcelain band switches or anything with high voltage. Nice radios you have there! de WB5GMK

    I am useing deoxit 5 , but if they both do the same job I think My next can will be Nu Trol ,I like getting a lot more for my money and a couple of my favorite techs on you tube use Nu trol ,but I will say so far deoxit 5 has been great stuff for cleaning controls and more on vintage radios ,I am hopeing the Nu trol will be as good too.

    I have a question.... so I cleaned my volume control with Nutrol and first time it was great! Second time around with Nutrol I lost ALL VOLUME. Is it possible that sparying too much may have coated the pots contact surfaces permately? I also sprayed my cassette player output volume pots and same results, lost all sound unless I rotate and apply angular pressure on the knob.

    • @Tobinindustrial
      @Tobinindustrial  2 роки тому

      That is a very bizarre circumstance you have encountered. if you look at a common volume pot, you will see it is a carbon track and a contact point which they call a wiper that moves around the track. Moving this wiper along the track increases or decreases resistence. That is how the volume is increased or decreased.
      Pots do contain a certain amount of lubricant to allow for smoother operation and to protect the unit from dust, dirt and moisture. By using a chemical cleaner spray like nutrol, you can irrigate the pot too much and dispel the lubricant. I highly doubt that too much irrigation of the pot would cause loss of volume.
      There is a possibility that your Nutrol can may be a different specifcation or product. Double check to make sure it is still suitable for volume pots, etc... Creating a similar issue is a cassette player gives me cause to think the spray is fouled or is the wrong kind of spray.
      My only other thought is that there is still too much spray in the unit and not allowing the wiper to make contact with the track. I am sure that the excess should dissipate though at some point or evaporate somewhat.
      Try working the volume excessively to see if this action will clear the excess fluid buildup. You may want to try another contact cleaner. There is a Deoxit "Slider" cleaner that is on the market. It supposed to have a lubricant base and is designed for the sliders of an audio mixer, etc. It cn be used on volume pots as well.
      I regret that you are having issues such as this. One last thing. be sure that while you were servicing the unit that you did not knock off a volume pot wire or break off the speaker wire. In both cases, you'd loose all volume. Something out of the ordinary has happened so you need to try and rule out all the obvious reasons why you lost volume. Keep me posted on your progress Sir

      @@Tobinindustrial Thanks for your valuable advice! I doubled checked my Nu-Trol and it's the same as yours. I also have MG Chem electronic contact cleaner with silicone I put aside for slider controls but did not use on my pots. So yes a weird one at which my results were different from yours. I will see if I can get Deoxit and give that a try. It's been over a week since I attempted to clean my pots with Nu-Trol and still they do not work. What ever Nu-trol was in my pots should have evaporated by now right.

    What's the difference between control and contact cleaner?
    I'm looking at MG Chemicals Contact Cleaner on Amazon to clean Oculus Touch controller triggers/sticks/buttons.
    Thought I'd look at reviews before ordering, but after seeing CONTROL cleaner, I'm confused.
    Searching the difference hasn't garnered any proper info.
    Any insight is welcome, thanks.

    • @Tobinindustrial
      @Tobinindustrial  4 роки тому

      I am not so sure myself. If the touch controllers you are referring to are like romote control touch pads then alcohol like isopropyl, etc works well. You need to disassemble the unit to get at the circuit contacts. be careful as some of these units are hard to disassemble and have multiple moving parts , springs, etc... All I can verify is that MGChemicals contact cleaner and Deoxit perofm similarly. If you have sliders there is a great Deoxit slider lube for that which has a lithium grease agent built in. Good luck with this quest and God bless you.

    Do you know if the nu-trol has lube in it? I have contact cleaner I was going to use, but it has no lube in it and that is why I was going to get the de-oxit. But if the Nu-Trol has lube in it as well as cleaner, that would probably be ideal.
