Most modern brake cleaners are formulated so that they wont harm electronics,plastics or rubber as all those are contained in or around modern brakes, Carb cleaner is much the same.

@@jamesdavies686 As most vehicles contain plastic somewhere in the brakes and carbs/injectors any cleaner that damages plastics is unlikely to be on the market. At that price I would get a can and try it on some scrap plastics too find out.
Something to note is that you should look for NON-CHLORINATED Brake Cleaner. The ones that are chlorinated *will* destroy plastics. I accidentally used the wrong stuff to try and clean a dusty case fan, and within 30 seconds the plastic started crumbling.
@@Dainslaif I think that chlorinated brake cleaners are banned here in the UK,I certainly have not come across any in something like the last twenty years.

Thanks Steve 👍. I sometimes use the Car Plan variety brake cleaner as PCB cleaner, as I have a few cans of it knocking around.. left over from when our workshop closed down. It's really handy stuff. Especially as you say instead of Fluxclene etc.
Just an advisory for anyone that uses brake cleaner.. Please take care not to get the stuff in your eyes.. It'll temporarily blind you & it stings REALLY BAD!.. How do I know?.. Well
In my youth as a vehicle technician we once had a small war in the garage during our lunch break, using brake cleaner as the weapon of choice. Mainly because the stuff we used came out in a very tightly formed targetable jet. Unfortunately I lost the battle, as I miss-timed popping my head up over the parts counter, just as the service manager (who was trained in such operations) came up from the other side with a can expelling a jet of brake cleaner at full tilt.. Got me in both eyes, and THE PAIN.. Wowee! I couldn't see anything for literally 5 minutes, the streams of tears along with the pain just wouldn't stop. I really thought I may have damaged my sight at the time, but luckily after about 10 minutes all was normal'ish again, apart from my glow-in-the-dark bloodshot eyes.
Yes we were idiots and certainly didn't do that again.

I have accidentally got break cleaner in my eyes before and I can verify that stuff burns like crazy. Luckily for me I have a very fast reaction and was able to reduce the amount got in my eyes although it still felt like I might got too much in there. Can't always control what direction that stuff will go, so it's best to wear eye protection when using it.

Yes, I have been buying them with cases (24x) for years now from Berner or Würth . Miracle stuff for cleaning/degreasing anything, including PCB's. I try to use them outside whenever possible. Really don't know what's in them, but I am sure it is something one shouldn't breathe.
Kerosene works on the heavy rosin fluxes, it just that it needs to be washed with a strong kitchen/bathroom spray afterwards. Brake cleaner seams like a better option.

I came here as a sanity check because I use brake clean in a pinch all the time. CRC QD doesn't clean flux at all, it makes it way worse. Wasn't disappointed with SMA reference haha.
Note to self: PCBs can be cleaned with Stoner Car Care, an acidic cleaner, rubbed with a paint brush and then it looked like rinsed with water after that. This video is using a type of brake and clutch cleaner for the same purpose. Acetone is to be avoided.

Usually this cleaning products are hexane based, which has been used for long time in industry. You can lookup on safety datasheet of both products to see the composition.
I have used brake cleaner in to clean flux. The high pressure stream works well. I am concerned about the long term effect on the reliability of components, especially electrolytic capacitors. However a brief test like this one cannot address that concern.

Acetone works very well for removing flux, never had an issue with the silkscreen.
Acetone works great on everything - its essentially the strongest solvent you can commonly buy. But you should really only ever use it as a last resort, because its way too strong! Using the least force necessary like a true connoisseur of petrochemical detergents
What about the Mr Muscle can in your thumbnail? ;)
Curiously, I have great success with an alkaline household cleaner (intended for stove-tops). It reasonably dissolves rosin, and after flushing with water, leaves no residue on everything, unlike alcohol. Has a few downsides though: It tarnishes solder joints a little bit, and attacks aluminium and brass readily (removes black anodisation off of heatsinks; leaves black stains on brass). And dissolves skin (slowly but surely), gloves are a must.
For my own boards, I use only water-soluble fluxes anyway, so i don't use the alkaline stufft very often.
The brand is "Unicum". Not sure if it's available in eu/us, it's quite a nasty stuff.
I still use 10:10:1 (Acetone, 99% Isopropyl and Xylene). Of course isopropyl is a bit hard to get right now. Never had any silkscreen , chip markings or such even slightly fade.

If you use it right, a can could last you years.
Just a bit on a tooth brush, work the flux until its all loss mud, throw it in the ultrasonic cleaner, and AvE is your uncle.
What would you use in the ultrasonic cleaner btw.? Isopropyl? Or just demineralised water?

I know other people have said it and you covered it but I would avoid brake cleaner! I used to be in the mechanics industry and have seen some very amusing destruction by brake and carbie cleaner, it can take some time to show. Car interiors, electronics, instrument clusters and quite a few things in the office by them who liked to borrow stuff from the workshop!
Nail polish remover (acetone) works well, £1 from Poundland UK.
As long as you don't plan on welding anything you've cleaned with it, should be good. It does leave something on the what you spray it on, which is why you can't use it to clean anything you plan on welding, as it will release a poisonous gas you DON'T want to breath in.
IDK about soldering though. Doubt the temp gets high enough.
I just use petrol solvent (which is called benzin in my area) - dirt cheap, awfully smelling and surprisingly effective. Also, it's safer than acetone for plastics.
Yes non chlorinated and no acetone base brake cleaner is safe for plastic and electronics. But it may effect paints for long period of scrubbing
Another helpful video. Did you inspect, or would you consider inspecting its affect on LEDs? Brake cleaner has a dramatic effect on transparent plastics, such as plexiglass or common safety glasses. I saw the LED on your practice board, but it seemed like it was already diffused by design - not a water clear lens - and thus it was difficult to judge whether the brake cleaner affected it or not. Whether one might consider any effect to be damage or a handy way of diffusing the LEDs is in the eye of the beholder.
LEDs are encapsulated in epoxy. No worries there.

I've got a can of MG Chemicals "Heavy Duty Flux Remover". it contains 1-difluoroethane, ethyl acetate, acetone, and propan-2-ol. Are there similar chemicals in the brake cleaner? This stuff works pretty good. The flux just drips off the board when I hold it vertically and spray.
How does this differ from electronic contact cleaner or engine cleaner?

I think the strong one is chlorinated based;p Good sniff;p Btw the methanol based cleaners are really strong they even burn your skin :) I only found old cans containing it and it's some really good shit :)
How about WD40 to take out corrosion ?
And then clean with break cleaner to take out the oiliness.
Funny, I tried this in the past, but had no luck. Also isopropanol is not as good as Kontakt LR. But as the FLU cleaner it is damn expensive. Maybe I give another brake cleaner a try.
Pure IPA is not a good cleaning agent alone. Definitely need to mix it with something else.

Personally, I use 50/50 mix of isopropanol and gasoline (from home markets). Good clean both polar and non polar things.
And it does not leave a film or smell? I never thought of using gasoline before.
@@benbaselet2026 It does not smell or film after drying. In Russia, it is sold as an 'oil solvent' or 'white spirit'. As I know, this composition also used in many factories for these purposes.

Interesting, but I would be worried about any insulated wires, including those in inductors...
No ill effects - you'll see there was a strand of some enamelled copper wire on one of the boards.

Unless it contains acetone or another more damaging alcohol, there should be no long term effects. The boiling point of these is so low that it evaporates very quickly.

Have you had a chance to check such PCB after longer period like 12-24 months? I would love to clean my retro graphic cards collection but I'm afraid that when I open the box after few years, it will all be rusty.

Just plain enamelled copper wire.

Yes, I've not had any reliability issues
Warning: if the circuit board is coated in a clear rubbery coating, aka conformal coating - brake cleaner may remove it - turned into a gooey mess that took a lot of spraying and brushing to remove in rubbery gluey chunks. got about 90% of it off anyhow...but now the protection of the coating is gone. I didnt listen and test first....so its on me. just a note to all that this method is not foolproof.

Its quite nasty stuff and lots of firms still use it.
Perhaps not *that* usefull on a 'production scale' like this, but warming up the isopropyl alcohol will activate the flux, thin it - and make it much easier to remove.
