Oscar-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, the man behind the famous film ‘Super Size Me,’ died on Thursday in upstate New York due to cancer. He was 53.
Born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, on November 7, 1970, Spurlock graduated from New York University with a BFA in film in 1993. Over the next 13 years, he achieved further success through his production company Warrior Poets, tackling a diverse range of controversial and topical subjects in nearly 70 documentary films and television series.
Rising to fame with "Super Size Me" in 2004, Spurlock conducted a daring experiment by consuming only McDonald's food for 30 days, with an added challenge of accepting the "super-size" option whenever offered. The resulting documentary sparked a global conversation about the fast-food industry's impact on public health, leading to significant changes such as McDonald's discontinuing its super-size option.
However, controversy followed ‘Super Size Me’ that centered on the movie’s veracity, where Spurlock was criticized for his evasion to disclose the diet chart during the filming of the movie. Furthermore, Spurlock faced some problems with drunkenness, and it stimulated the controversy concerning conclusions about his health that belongs to the documentary.
