That scene utterly cleared my sinus and brought cold chills down my spine. Both Sonnys (Sonny Black, guy just insulted, standing up, looking back at the other Sonny and giving him the ominous smile and Sonny Red, guy sitting down, staring at the other Sonny and giving him the grim stare) gave each other the stare of death in each their own ways while the music in the background just heighten the fear of what was to come next and that's the moment you knew when one of the two Sonnys was gonna kill the other! 8O Hence the saying, if looks could kill. I don't know what's scarier: having a capo look at you in a "I'm going to kill you soon" way or having a capo look at you in a "I'm going to kill you when you least expect it" way. Both are terrifying.
This movie was thought of being done years before this .The original cast was to be Al Pacino and Tom Cruise, then Goodfellas came out and they put it on the back burner so as not to compete with it directly.By the way Scorses's daughter worked as a assistant diector on Brasco she was very easy to talk to. (Eddie Black, actor and one of The Sonny Black crew in the movie). What might interest you is that the real Donnie Brasco,(Joe Pistone) was on the set every day and there were wiseguys on the set as advisers, yes I know they played up that Brasco had a hit out for him but while that was good advertising for the movie The Italian American mob does not kill cops or FBI agents so it would have to have been an outside contract . Fugetaboutit!!There was one incident when we were filming in Little Italy where someone from a crowd of onlookers burst forward and yelled out ,you put my friends away !! he was removed very quickly.
They did put a contract out on him but called it off pretty quickly because they rightly thought it would bring way to much heat on them. The mob in general didn't go after cops or feds directly because they rightly realised it would lead to much harder crack downs on them. It's one thing to dodge being arrested and convicted of crimes, it's another to get to the point where the feds or cops just come up with excuses to kill you directly. It was much easier to just pay them off or try not to draw too much attention.
To be honest. It's been known for a while that a lot of Wiseguys will put business to the side if it means there is even an iota of a chance of them having an "extra" role or meeting a celeb (especially actors from Mafia films) The Mob still has its contracts, but they ain't the heavy hitters they used to be ever since Guliani gutted the New York Old School Heavy Hitters and Capos.... The only person I can think of who actually never fawned over Hollywood was probably Franchese back when he was mentioned in Goodfellas, and his biggest beef seems to be that they put him in the wrong "Family"
These movies make the mobsters look so shady. They really smile kiss eachother & show eachother the best hospitality knowing they wanna wack them its comical
Great film. I think Johnny Depp's most interesting and unique films were in the 90's while nowadays he acts in plenty of commercially successful fairytales to stay on the top. Al Pacino was impressive here too and Michael Madsen with Anne Heche did a great job too. I miss the 90's so much!!!
Ditto about the 90s. Before 911, saturation of computers, loss of privacy, '07 (or '08?) big recession and permanent loss of many good jobs, loss of hope.
John Davis the movie flipped the two. Lefty, al Pacino, was arrested in real life on his way to get killed. Sonny dropped his valuables off with a bartender and said “I’m glad it was Donnie who took me down”
