I can appreciate the level of craftsmanship and acknowledge the benefits of using these for therapy and medical training. That being said, I think I would pass out if I saw one in my house.
People always talk about how women use these when grieving a baby, but from what I've seen, almost no one has them for that reason. Most collectors just have them because they like them. I also know one woman with a mild intellectual disability who has a few and treats them as her babies. She knows they're not "real" but it seems to be a good outlet for her.
well, that’s a good use for them too, i suppose. if it helps a person deal with a hardship like loss or helps them be able to take care of a “baby” then it’s good
I think your last point marks the line between it being a hobby/therapy thing and being a mental issue. If the person is fully aware that it’s not a real baby then it’s fine, they can pretend whatever they want.
The craftsmanship with these dolls is absolutely amazing! I can imagine these are also great for nursing homes, especially for some dementia patients. When given dolls or dog/cat plushies for the patients to care for they where doing a lot better psychogically. These dolls are likely to expensive for most facilities though
I have a family member who literally spends thousands of dollars on dolls like this. She even carries them around in actual baby seats and has strollers for them. Creepiest thing I've ever seen

Dementia & Alzheimers. A very significant use for dolls like this not even mentioned in this video is in our elderly population. Older folks can become hyper fixated on their baby, and need to check on their child. Their child is 60 years old and they are looking for a baby. No amount of explaining or reorienting will help. Hand the older person a baby doll and all is well because they have their child.
I love those dolls! What is even greater is that they can be used to teach on a more realistic scale! Those people are super talented! To create and paint that level of realism is incredible!❤

Sure, I can easily judge. It is mental illness to collect these kinds of dolls, especially to walk around with them like they are real. It's not difficult to understand. Those kinds of people need psychological assistance from a professional, not an incredibly expensive and creepy coping mechanism.
If you didn't know better and walked in on this you'd just be so horrified lol what a highly delicate process it takes from start to finish and the details seem so painstaking but what an art though, very cool.

This sure is nice work/craft and even more valuable if it can help in a therapeutic/medical field but yeah wouldn't say creepy but kind of "uncanny valley" deranging thing.
It’s human nature. According to science, anything close to a real human look to a certain level but not 100% will give humans that creepy feeling. It’s not because people are mean or anything.
The museum I work for now in Hong Kong is hosting an exhibition by Patricia Piccinini, and her studio makes silicone sculptures just like these, minus the animatronics :)
I first saw one such doll on this great show called Servant, was amazed by its realism. There are some truly nice bits with the reborn doll in the first two seasons.
Reborn baby dolls are quite creepy. For those who can’t naturally have children, I suppose they can be great replacements for a real infant. We know for certain that they’re meticulously crafted to enhance the whole realism factor.
Yeah there is something creepy about realistic stuff like this. Like no matter how realistic this doll is, it is never fully convinced human. Like we always knew it was fake, no matter how realistic it is. Deeper we look, deeper we will find how artificial it is. Just like CGI or video game, there is some unexplainable quality that gives off its artificiality. IMO, they aren’t a great replacement.
They’re also great for people who’ve had a miscarriage or their baby passed away… sadly miscarriages are super common in early pregnancy and it’s impossible to completely avoid fatal complications after birth. Especially with multiples since they’re usually born early and smaller
its mostly to do with the fact that every persons skin has so many different colors in it and no matter how good you can fake the texture you cant fake the visual part of that skin. skin is kind of transparent because of the light shining into it, never showing one true color. you just cant fake that.
I appreciate the work that goes into this. They are very detailed and the artists are very talented but that being said these creep me out so much. They send me into the uncanny valley and I would want them far away from me.
