Totally agree with you….anytime you decide to live in a foreign country for an extended time, you should make an effort to at least learn the language to get around….some tourists come to a foreign country and complain that the locals don’t speak enough English which is not right….it should be the other way around

I love to follow foreign vloggers living in Vietnam to practice listening and speaking English fluently day by day. Besides, I genuinely respect foreigners that try their best to learn the native language of the place they live.😊

I agree about learning the language of the country you live in. I think most locals dont care if you can or can't speak the language, but I think what they really care about is your effort out of respect for the country

America has to be the worst for this. even if you can speak, read, write, have amazing grammar, etc. if you have an accent while speaking English people are mad disrespectful and clown you for the most part. It's really unfortunate.

You summed it up beautifully, life is just a hell of a lot more fun when you can really communicate with people around you. I only had a month and I'd been taking lessons for 6 months; not enough to get anywhere close to fluent. But I can't imagine spending a whole month in a place and not trying to communicate on a deeper level than "how much?" Vietnam is beautiful and has amazing things to see, but it's the people, their warmth and openness, and those interactions, that make it really special.

Highly impressed with your Vietnamese skill, and I share your enthusiasm and love for languages. I have learned nine languages, with varying degrees of proficiency, and for all the good reasons to learn a new language the top for me is always this: it's fun! Not work, just 100% fun.To those folks who live and work in a foreign country without ever bothering to learn the language - and Americans have no monopoly on that, by the way - I can only say they do not know what they are missing. And yeah, the girlfriend helps. A lot. I'll be in Vietnam for the first time next year, and starting now with Vietnamese. I have subscribed and will follow you with interest.

One other thing! Assuming your native language is English (or similar language), you also gotta take into account that Vietnamese is a very different language from English whether it be the structure, the sound system, how ideas are expressed, etc. For those languages that aren't similar to your native in any way, the amount of hours you have to put in to see the same amount of comprehension progress will be way higher than for a language like Spanish or French. So it seems like you're doing pretty good for only being able to put 2 hours a day in.

You don’t have to learn Vietnamese, but yes you’ll have such more fun if you did, just like any other country. Plus when the people see a foreigner speaks so well, that impresses them and they’ll be more engaged with you, in turn makes your visit much more fun and you’ll feel more comfortable with the people. Not to mention you’ll meet new friends easily.

I am doing something similar, but with Chinese; I am moving there soon for a teaching job in Beijing. The thing is that I am already basically "fluent" and I have not even been there yet. It's a long process, but movies really help, and lots of time. It's great to know there are other foreigners in other countries like Vietnam putting in the effort to learn their language, living unique experiences. I wish I could share that experience with you in Vietnamese, but I can only do so with Chinese. Nonetheless, I will make an effort to learn more Vietnamese if I ever end up going.

    Of course !!! 😅
How can you live in Vietnam, communicate and respect the Vietnamese people if you don’t speak the language ? 🤨 If not, come back to your country !!! 😂 Just kidding, but here in Vietnam, the respect is primordial. 😉👍🇻🇳
PS: dear Hurley, I think like you, I’d rather prefer to be the only foreigner in my area and be the center of attention of the Vietnamese people. In Paris, I wasn’t anybody, here, I’m daily appreciate and it’s far easier for them to come communicate with me. 😁👍
    Vietnam số một !!! 🤗♥️🇻🇳

Very informative video.... I want to learn vietnamese to have a better experience visiting Vietnam, but, i am told there are a different dialects?! If so, is there a particular dialect you recommend or is any good enough? Many thanks, love your vids, super inspiring. Respect from the UK.

I always find the general answers to this question comical. In my humble opinion, learn the dialect of the people that you will be talking to the most. I study the southern dialect, but if I lived in hanoi for eight years instead of Saigon, it wouldn’t do me much good. If your wife’s family is from the north, you wouldn’t want to learn a bunch of words from the south and vice versa.

@@phucmapvlog ...isn't your wife from Hai Phong? So it surprises me that you don't speak with a northern accent/vocab as I would think she'd teach you that. I would think it would behoove her to get you to learn Vietnamese sooner, even if she was to correct you so you'd say certain words with the correct tonality. It seems as if you got started on learning the language later rather than sooner. You have shown great improvements over the past year or so, but it still surprises me as long as you've been there and considering you married a Vietnamese woman and live with a Vietnamese family that your Vietnamese isn't closer to Chris Lewis level (Max is coming along pretty good considering he's been there 3 years, travels abroad, and isn't married to a Vietnamese woman or lives with a Vietnamese family).

    • @doodahgurlie
      @doodahgurlie Рік тому

I would recommend learning the northern dialect as the southern dialect uses a lot of slang or they just outright say the words incorrectly. Different parts of the country will say things incorrectly (e.g. Hai Phong folks will say VietLam whilst southerners will say Yietnam), etc.

For me, it’s quite simple. I don’t enjoy trying to think of which pronoun I should call myself when it comes to older or even younger people. if I just use my name, I don’t have to worry about it.

Agree. If you're going to live in a country where people generally don't speak English, you should make an effort to learn the language. Both for your own sake, and to avoid burdening others.

Tip for crossing street in Vietnam:
Many tourist foreigners scared of traffic in VN . Don’t worry about it! The rule to win this fear is keep routin slowly walking when you across the streams of motobike! motor-bykers knows how to avoid you themself in chaos-order! remmember do not run and stop suddently , accident immidiatly ! Don’t be affraid off and do it if you want to be safety in the crazy- traffic in Vietnam.

I've been learning Vietnamese for about a year and a half. When I visit Vietnam and spend time with my fiancee's family it's so cool to be able to speak their language. My biggest problem has been being able to understand virtually anyone though. Usually it's me speaking Vietnamese, and then using Google Translate to listen to their response. I'm not sure what to do to up my listening comprehension game. lol

Viet here: Have you considered watching a very formulaic TV Drama--one with English subtitles? It will get you used to the noises. And you will slowly pick out words and sounds and phrases. Watch with your fiancee, so it will be a fun immersive activity. And I'm sure she will highlight some key phrases here and there.

Don’t be discouraged! It’s really hard to understand listening to them. You will do better if your in control of the conversation. I live with my Viet wife and her brother I understand my wife quite well but when the brother in law speaks I can’t make out to much! When I first learned I heard the north accent and they speak south. South is even more difficult to hear. Just keep going!
