  • Going over the list of modifications to my new KLX300 dualsport motorcycle. I purchased the bike new in January, and couldn't ride it with all the snow, so I got straight to work making this bike more usable for off-road riding and light ADV.

    Good on you for stock exhaust. A-holes with loud exhausts have got so much riding area shut down in my lifetime I can't believe it.

      Definitely a good combo for the woods (and wheelies haha). I had 13/47 on my last KLX and it was just about perfect. I've gotten used to the 13/42 now though, I don't think I need much more torque. When my chain wears out I will be putting the 14 front back on (the 13 wears the swingarm sliders a little too fast for my liking), and I'll go with a 48 rear at that point. This way I'll still have enough top end speed to run highways to the trails, with just that little extra get up as compared to my 13/42. Plus, if I'm planning a more technical ride, I could quickly swap in the 13 if I want to.

    Really helpful video. Im considering buying this bike or the CRF300L or Maybe the LS version. So watching videos like this help with knowing what I will need to change out to make them more useable for what I am doing with the bike.

      Thanks! I sometimes wonder if I should have bought the CRF, but the adjustable suspension and digital camo won on the KLX as compared to the updated dash and more aftermarket parts for the CRF. I hear the CRF has more grunt in the low end... which might have been nice, but with regearing and slight uncorking on the KLX, it has great torque and throttle response. Since the video, I added a more free-flowing intake snorkel and removed the secondary throttle plate and that has made a huge difference!

    Amigo ! Excellent video. I just got rid of my 2020 Africa twin adventure sport. It was dangerously heavy. I did the California and NM BDRs and hard to manage in mud and rough slow terrain. Luckily my back is still ok. I get my KLX 300 this Tuesday and so excited. I am doing the WYBDR this summer with the KLX. Already ordering some upgrades. Greetings and respect to all from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽.

      Thanks my friend! Congrats on the new bike - it will definitely be a breeze to pick up compared to the AT! The KLX is the perfect platform to make a bike that suits your own riding style for a decent price. What upgrades are you starting with?

      @@SudburyDualSport thanks sir. Since I will be doing the WYBDR, which is the most remote one - I got the IMS tank, a rotopak, IMS pegs, TREx windshield, tusk mounting racks and barkbusters and the 12v juice. I had a few left over soft bags from my Africa twin I will somehow tie to my new system. Thanks for your very helpful videos I will also be doing the protection plate and will do your tires. I am trailering my bike up there to Baggs, Wyoming. But I need to save some money to get the rest of the stuff. Thanks again.

       @Asdf Awesome, that's definitely a good start!! It's a shame there's no tank for this bike over 3gal at the moment, more fuel would definitely make it a lot more usable for remote riding.. but we do what we can to make it work - it would just be nice to use the rack for packing gear instead of fuel. Anyway, enjoy the new bike and making her your own! You'll love the tire combo, if you're doing any mud and sand it's awesome, and on general trails they just always hook up. I haven't gotten to test on river rock yet, but it's supposed to be a good combo for that as well! Cheers! 🤙

      @@SudburyDualSport thanks bro. I wish IMS would make at least a 3.5 or 4 gallon tank. I rode dirt bikes all my life - started with a KX 80 - and did a trip from Tijuana all the way to Cabo on Honda 250 and it was the perfect size bike for anything I threw at it - sand dirt mountains single track occasional small roads, stream crossings - and then I made the mistake of getting the 1100 Africa twin. It may be the perfect bike for some people and depends what you use it for - but for me those 600 pounds when loaded and with crash bars etc were fricken scary. Not enjoyable at all. So now I am back to the right size for me bike for what I will use it for. Safe and fun riding sir.

    My biggest disappointment with my KLX 250 was the clutch pull being as heavy as it is. It is as heavy as my past DRZ400's, which for making only close to half as much torque as the DRZ didn't seem to add up. The pressure plate seems to be overkill and removing 2 of the springs (33% of the pack) the bikes is soooo much better: no longer fatiguing, more control over feather and the off- the-line stalling issue I was having is gone. I will probably go to 25% lighter springs and replace the entire set, but as for now the 4 springs seem fine and in several hundred miles of riding I haven't experienced any issues.

    Great bikes, Iv been through a lot of enduro bikes and sold those, bought another KLX as my 1 do it all ride. I got a fully modded '18 250 blacked out digital camo {best looking year, LOL...but this '23 looks good too}. I love mine, and only ride back roads and offroad too with 13/45 and its just fine. Can still zip up to 75mph if i need. My only reason to switch to the 300 would be too gain power and keep it quiet but buying a used 250 with all the power mods, its got the same power and the Yoshi isnt very obnoxious. Keep the oem 14t its easy to swap if u plan on extended road trips. If u want to add power for cheap the plug in 02 delete resistor and air lid off gains a lot of low end. Both reversible, the resistor is only $25. U hear a loud growl on the bike with air lid off but neighbors dont.

    • @SudburyDualSport
      @SudburyDualSport  Рік тому +1

      I agree, you have the best looking year. I don't know why they didn't stick with the blacked-out engine with the digital camo on the 300, even if they had to raise the price another $100 or something I would have paid it lol. I almost went 13/45 instead but I'm going to wear out the stock chain before I do. I had 13/47 on my old KLX (2000 KLX300R with a dual sport kit) and it was perfect, but believe it or not the new 300 FI DS with my 13/43 gearing feels about the same with the stock engine as my modded carby 300R did, so no complaints here. I have a O2 delete already for my bike, just haven't installed it yet. I plan to, especially to just add more fuel to cool things down a bit. Hoping to get a KDX snorkel to add at the same time, as I hear decreasing the air intake vaccum should richen it up slightly as well. Going to run some tests and make a video about it when I get to that, so stay tuned! Cheers!🤙

      @@SudburyDualSport You are an OG that had the old Gen 1 300R. Those bikes were so cool, I almost bought 1 twice but my lack of skills with carb's stopped me. Loved the look, power, handling. Digital display and EFI is definitely upgrade though. Just FYI the snorkel only draws more air when u are going fast, air lid off or snorkel out is best for power gain from dyno's i looked at. Dunno if u seen the vids from Best Dual Sports guy bout modifying the oem exhaust and secondary throttle plate.

    • @SudburyDualSport
      @SudburyDualSport  Рік тому

      @@tieoneon1614 yeah I plan on playing with a couple airbox configurations, but I do like how quiet it is with a snorkel. My gen one I rode with the lid off, but I don't know if I want to do that on this one, we'll see - maybe it will be worth it. Removing the STP is high up ony list of things to do to it, it's just about time at the moment. The little free te that I do have I want to use to ride this thing now that the weather's nice here. I will have to check out the videos from best dual sports, thanks!

    Really good advice. Do you mostly ride standing? You didn’t mention the seat. Is the tail LED just a plug and play swap for the brake light? I pick mine up this week. Should be fun

    • @SudburyDualSport
      @SudburyDualSport  Рік тому +2

      Thanks! I honestly only stand about 50% of the time when things get technical. I should stand more.. The seat is stock but a seat concepts is in this bikes future - the stock seat definitely sucks. The LED tail light is just a plug in bulb in the stock light. It's much brighter than stock and draws less current. Congrats on the new bike! They're so much fun to ride and make your own. 🤙

    I like the tank bag. Does it get in the way of refueling?

    • @SudburyDualSport
      @SudburyDualSport  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes, it completely covers the cap. You only need to undo one of the front clips to open the cap and refuel, so it's not too bad. A small sacrifice for lots of extra storage. It will be nicer when I get a bigger tank so that I'm not refueling as often.

      I'll do an update video soon. At about 2000km now and the bike runs flawlessly. Did a few more mods. Still very happy with the bike, I just wish I could get a much larger tank for it... But every time I think about trading it for a bike with more fuel range, I take it out again and always realize that this bike performs perfectly for me.

      The price tag on the KTM and Beta were just too much for me right now, especially when you can get the KLX for SO much cheaper, and upgrade as needed. Also, you can be pretty hard on the KLX maintenance wise and it will keep thumpin' - which doesn't happen often with higher performance bikes.

      @@jamescox4823 I love my KLX! It may not be the most powerful or light weight, but for the money you get a lot. Aftermarket has gotten better, so there are lots of extra parts and mods available (except for larger gas tanks.. But I'm sure that will get better as time goes on) It has plenty of power to keep you having fun, and not so much that you end up hurting yourself. It's an excellent trail machine, and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
