So, according to this, canadians can be at -20ºC without any problem, but they go a tropical country and come back home with a cold XD
ManuAG_86 Cold does not cause colds. Try telling that to my mother.
going from -20 to 30c and back to -20 again ... is probably what caused this
LOLOL.. gotta say.. thats a sexy voice until it falls apart at minimum focus LOL :) great video. Get better soon guys!, kill that cold!
This so far has been the best preview/review of this lens. Not because of the sexy voice. Finally someone that compared the 12-35mm. Yes, that is why some Panasonic shooters pick the Olympus 12-40mm because it has sharper IQ but figured the 12-45mm was close to the same size as the 12-35mm. I heard that this lens has incredible minimum focus, thanks for sharing! For me, the difference in size, I will be buying the 12-40mm instead but I would buy a 40-150mm f/4 version.
why did you not compare it to the olympus 12-40/2.8?
I think because the Panasonic is closer in size/weight, and just a little closer in price too.
Exactly this lens should have been compared to the two other lenses. Then again if you don't compare you can't criticize can you.
He didn't have one around to compare.
Peter Lemke what's to criticize? It's slower than the 2.8 that's about it. If you want fast glass get a prime.
The Pro 12-45 f4 makes a lot of sense if Olympus launches new f4 lenses. It also makes sense in the current Olympus trend to reduce the size of lenses and cameras. Remember that Olympus cameras have excellent IBIS and f4 is perfectly acceptable for 90% of scenarios. In the case of the MFT system, low light performance indicates the use of a fast lens anyway in this scenario. In this case, it doesn't matter if the zoom lens is 2.8 or 4, the photographer will always have a small prime f1.8 or f1.7 (or 1.4 / 1.2) in the backpack for the low light situation. Little Oly Pro fits the em10 and em5 perfectly. I believe that “Bokeh Hype ” will lose strength. Photography and video, and camera evaluation will be less dependent on this simple aspect. Just a regional fad, in my opinion.
Mr Tech aesthetic tendencies come and go! Just study the history of photography a little to understand. The War of MP and the size of sensors and Bokeh is recent. Soon it will end! All Hypes ends, or changes. For Macro or Birding, Wildlife or various types of video Bokeh is not desirable. It is best to have more equipment options, not less!
Mr Tech I have been working with photo and video for over 20 years and I have MFT, APS-C and Medium Format cameras, and I can say, I consider the GH5, so far, the best cost benefit in the market. And GH5 is mft. Each job depends on the correct equipment, and of course I don't use mft for everything. But at least 75% of what I produce I do it using mft. And I know a lot of people who are also absolutely happy with the system. But I see on the internet a lot of trolls, which started yesterday in the world of photography, investing more than it should in equipment that they don't know how to use and that they really don't need, just because they make decisions based on the bullshit they read on the web, instead of going out. streets and shooting.
Mr Tech I agree! I agree that Olympus has been disappointing in the launches. And it could be more synchronized with the users' needs. The AF issue is real at Panasonic, but for photos it works well and anyone who seriously works with video uses MF anyway. The mft system needs updated sensors and I believe that we will see new features in the new Panasonic mft camera. I’m curious to see the GH6...
Thank you very, very much for comparing this to the Panny 12-35. That is precisely what I was looking for.
This review is really smoooooth. I dig the groove, it's happenin'. 😁👍🎷😎
What a smooth video. Great job guys! I wish Olympus would embrace more 8-10mm on the wide end. 24 equivalent is alright, but I'd personally prefer something wider.
I never knew I needed this ASMR
Interesting lens, I'm currently thinking of getting the 12-60 2.8-4 from panasonic and i wonder how it would compare
Very useful comparison. Thanks!
Olympus 12-40 f2.8 has solid close focusing, doesn’t seem significantly bigger, and helps with low light, a very sore spot for four thirds bodies. Can’t imagine why anyone would save a few dollars on this when we’re desperate for fast lenses in this system.
Agreed...the 2.8 is already very small and light...and is retailing for only £100 more than the new 12-45. Alternatively another £100 again gets you the 12-100 f4 pro with IS.
@@Hemlck This and the 12-100 are way different markets. I've got the 12-100 and it's honestly massive for micro 4/3, takes up the space of two or three other lenses. And I've owned the 12-40 before, and it is surprisingly chunky.
I wouldn't get the 12-45 myself, but it caters strongly to those who want something versatile, weatherproof, and tiny.
@@StefanHundhammer But the Panny 12-35 was practically the same size and weight already but, with a max aperture of f/2.8, twice as fast. Nobody really prefers a 90mm f/4 lens over a 70mm f/2.8, yet Olympus thinks this was the way to go?
@@StefanHundhammer I get that argument, but the Panasonic 12-35/2.8 isn't your typical 24-70/2.8. Had you been comparing the 12-45/4 to the 12-40/2.8 of Olympus, I could understand that argument. But...whatever. Preferences shouldn't be argued. My bad.
Tim Firth that difference in price might not be much for you, but not everyone is rich so £100 savings is a big deal, and I'm guessing this lens will come down in price significantly.
The 12-40 might be small but is still a little too big on the em10 and em5 series of cameras.
Maybe would've been better to compare with the Olympus 12-40 f2.8?? How does the corner sharpness and close focus fare in that case?
Best written and performed DPReview TV Ever! :)
You should narrate a cheetah sneaking up to its prey^^
While I do want you to get well soon, your new radio voice *is* awesome. Let's hope the cold goes away but the voice stays 😬
Watching this video late on a Sunday night, not sure I can sleep 🙈 Chris’s voice is just to alluring 😂😂
Late comment, so this has probably already been said, but I think the 12-45mm f/4 poses an analogue to the 24-105 f/4 types of lenses in other systems. By gum is the 12-45 heaps smaller than those other ones. It definitely relegates itself to outdoor use, but for those who tend to stop down to f/4 for street anyway, it's hard to not consider this lens as an alternative the 12-40 f/2.8.
Chris that was funny. And OMG I started dribbling when I heard that late night radio voice and nearly wet myself with your excited high pitched close focus description. You should be on stage.
Great ASMR! Do some ASMR style camera reviews in the future hehe. Hello from Norway
Very much like you new style! Keep it up. :D
I think I caught something from you Chris... a very realistic review. I can even believe it's fair.
That speed and close focus is tempting. Maybe it is time to upgrade from my Pan. 12-60 kit len, thanks.
I really don't think that's much of an upgrade. Btw, the 12-40 PRO has a higher maximum magnification...
If I own an Olympus 12-40 F2.8, does it mean I have the best of both panasonic 12-35 f2.8 and Olympus 12-45 F4? Larger aperture, sharp optics and impressive close focusing distance.
Yes, but the Oly 12-40 is a bit larger and heavier.
Dixon Wang But much bigger ...
@@TITAOSTEIN in a world where 1.5 cm is a lot, it is much bigger yes. In all other worlds though...
Hyp much much bigger! length, diameter, weight, filter size! If Olympus confirms the launch of a compact f4 trio, I'm sure it will make a difference in the backpack! Just like it makes a difference when used on pen or em10 and em5
Yes you do. I own that lens as well. This new one is absolutely pointless lens no idea why Olympus come out with it.
Well done Chris, very funny! Funniest video this far.
All that good Jazz and the voice though!!!
Can you guys do a tutorial on light painting and long exposure please? (Don't know if you all did one already) Oh and what's the best macro lens for my micro four thirds?
Olympus 60mm easily.
@@peterlemke3468 Thanks man!
Mmmm, Olympus Mons on bass🎻, Onion Ring Bokeh on percussion🥁, Stopdown Defrax on sax🎷...smooth jazz🎼...nicceee 👍🕶
Does anyone have experience with 12-35 mk2’s focus by wire, I need a portable allround lens with a descent manual focus, mainly for outdoor and long distance hiking. The f4 aperture is not an issue since I’ll use another lens for low light conditions. I’ve had my eyes on the 12-40 but it seems to heavy paired with my G9 (I prioritize weight). If this had the manual clutch focusing I’d go for it.
This is the sexiest video you guys EVER made ... and the humor nearly choked me to death on my hot soup, I just lost it when you got excited about the close focus wide angle.
I'd still buy the Panasonic F2.8 for it's aperture. But can't help feeling Panasonic should optically give that lens an update! Olympus has seem to make another good lens though, if it's price is okay.
This review is everything. The voice😂
Get well soon!
Awesome RJ Chris
Hi .
I wanted to consult with you about purchasing another lens. I have the following equipment:
Body:
EM10-Mark 2
Lenses:
1.Kit 14-42mm f3.5-5.6
2.45mm f1.8
3.75mm f1.8
4.40-150mm f4-5.6
What do you want to recommend as my next lenses?
I have found in Germany a good deal on 12-45mm F4.0 PRO only for 300 Euro. Does that make sense to buy these lenses?
Wow, way to hold on to character. Pretty impressive
S1H colors looking great.
I just can't wish you fast recovery. The world needs this voice. Sorry:)
Olympus should have you review their gear more often. Love living la loca bokeh.
Kudos for powering through with that voice
Feels your pain but man. This is the funniest review ever. Especially the high pitch breaking voice part 😂
Still nothing that makes me regret pairing my G9 with Olympus' incredible 12-40 F2.8. I haven't had to use any other lenses (primes included) since buying it that lens. It's an amazing piece of kit. It's heavy, but while this lens is light and weather-sealed, which bodies will it go with that are also light and weather-sealed? EM-5/GX8/G85, and that's about it, I think.
I can’t hear your review over my laughing. That voice is 👍🏻👍🏻.
What am I missing here? Why make a 12-45 pro f4 when there already is a lovely 12-40 pro f2.8? The 2.8 is small and has been around for ages and is lovely quality and is discounted everywhere so why buy the new 12-45?
For smaller bodies including the Pens.
And price
I agree, why, it does not make sense???
The F2.8 is much, much bigger! And Olympus is reducing the sizes of lenses and cameras. It makes a lot of sense to me. For low light situations the photographer will bring a small Prime in the backpack anyway.
I only do prime lenses for street and a friend hooked me up with some event photography and it was a disaster to keep switching between my prime lenses. This 12-45mm is small and f/4 is perfect cause I'm doing group photos!
4:04 you sound just like the Angry Photographer. :D
Best ever!
Have you been hanging with Ryan Reynolds... definitely some Deadpool in there.
Interesting and usefull review too.
Theres not that big a price gap between the f2.8 & f4 for me personally.
Seems an odd product positioning.
Amazing !!!
I couldnt stop laughin through this review, killer Barry white impression Chris.
LOL... Sexy radio-voice lens review... Really great video. I never wanted to buy that lens, but I really enjoyed the video!
Awesome & Thanks :)
I feel like if you buy into the olympus system just getting the 12-40 f2.8 is the one and only lens to get.
Perhaps, unless you have a smaller E-M5 or OM-5 body, in which case the 12-45 f4 balances much better. And it’s so sharp at f4 you could literally shoot it wide open the whole time, provided max aperture gives you enough DOF.
If DPReview ever decides to do a Chris and Jordan podcast, Chris just has to do it in this voice!
Another win for the M. Zuiko lenses I say.
Chris, please make whiskey voice a regular thing! x
Chris got sick in Feb 2020?? Was it covid?
Tell me there's an outtakes video! 😂😂
Now you got me , what is lockeh ??
In 15 year photography and video heard this one ??...

So if it's something that you really like, that dama and that mess? Then we probably dated before. @1:50 😂
Haha awesome and hilarious way to turn a problem making a video into an asset for the video!
I wanna see a "Olympus 12-45 f4 vs Panasonic 14-45 f3.5~f5.something" video
Chris with asmr voice :)
That voice.. can’t stop laughing .. you are killing me!!!
Can I use your voice on my answering service?
Get well soon you sick man ;-) and no one catches the cold from you
My god this was so amazing haha
I was only listening and Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions
came to my mind :) Kinda voice and tone
How is this compared to the Olympus 12-40mm f2. 8?
This should be your voice 😂 in all new videos
I think that this is the official vintage hipster Chris Nicholls Fujifilm XF1 voice. All the Oly lens needs is a red faux leather wrap. I like it.
0:05 well you deserve it for leaving us all here in the nasty/cold/winter :-( haha
The best voice ever
Well it's 10 in the morning and now I'm drunk, thanks for the advice. Anyhow, nice review, get well soon.
I'm on fujifilm... but take my money and give this brilliant! 😆
Chris just sounds sarcastic the whole time :-)
Great video as always !
Would have been nice to compare it with the Olympus 12-20 f/2.8 though...
12-20? Do you mean 12-40? If so I agree👍
@@Hemlck Yeah, that's what I meant ! Thanks for correcting me !
I feel violated yet somehow more informed by that radio voice...
wait wait wait, what about breathing correction?
Living La Bokeh Lokah ... 🤣🤣🤣 I almost spit out my coffee!
It's Ted Vieira:)
They really should have made this into 12-35 f4... can you imagine how compact it will be ?
DAMN, that voice... you really should consider to use THAT voice for the rest of your life. Damn cool and smooth...
that bedroom / teen voice if you crack up.

I have the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f2.8 and I've been pretty happy with it. I shot a feature film with it and the GH5. Last June, I sold the GH5 for enough to outright buy the BMPCC4K. Of course, the Pana lens works wonderfully with the P4K. I also own the Olympus 40-150mm f4/5.6 lens, which is dang good. You can see that in action here: ua-cam.com/video/MhGDISI8Vnw/v-deo.html
Have you done a review on that lens?
I prefer chris's cold voice as it makes him sound sexy and the content seems much more serious.

@@cobaltno51 that is a joke that women are enjoying Chris' voice more than men.
@@romasandmo yeah, and I made a joke about that.
@@cobaltno51 Okay.
Ok but how many damn Nocts is it?
don't see what's appealing about this lens... unless it's has a major discount from the price of 12-40 2.8. Practically the 2.8 is small enough, and cheap for what it is. If I want range and small size I would pick the panny 12-60.
just a cold Chris?
Don't spread rumors, mate.
@@frankfeng2701 a question does not a rumor make, dear
So many compression artifacts!
But they have 12-40/2.8 oh why oh why????
That voice is dreamy
If Olympus has any sense they’ll hire Chris to narrate all their videos.
“Needless to say, this lens has EVERYTHING”
Besides speed...
Should I be worried or aroused? lmao.
So funny !!!! and pro, i love this !
Ted Vieira is that you?!
Olympus is in big luck. Nobody would watch this without that voice
