Thanks a lot! It was frustrating in the beginning. A quick tip: you save a lot of time by auto tracing. The whole illustrator step can be totally avoided imo.
great tutorial! :D thankfully for me i just wanted to make a 3d version of gramophone record so it was a perfect circle thus no real problems with it :D worked out fine! thanks
Dustin, I have been trying for the past few days to follow what you have said as well as watching the VC video. Somewhere along the lines I'm screwing up. I was wondering if you can give me a step by step written tutorial. I tried but some how things are not lining up even when playing with the settings for the position. I'm tying not to pull my hair out from what's left of it but step by step would be better if you have the time. Thanks again and sorry to be a pain. David.
After hitting the "Use Layer as UV" I noticed that the mapped image was bleeding onto the edges and did not look clean like your JP image). I utilized your trick for pre-composition and copy/pasted the attributes to another bevel. I messed with the extrusion and Z-offset and it looks great. My question, however, is how can I use my Pro Shaders on the extruded portion if I already have a second bevel mimicking the first? Thanks for the tutorial. It's great. EDIT: I figured it out. Make a third bevel and push the first to closer to the camera in Z space.
Hey Dustin, Thanks for the quick reply. I got the hockey puck from Elements 3d Sports 3D model package. I imported it to AE and the grabbed the difusse jpeg and put it into my project and then into my comp. Now I just need to know if I can just grab any jpeg logo and add it to the puck or does the logo have to be in a different format? I am taking my time and pausing the VC video so I can follow the proper steps. I'm new to all of this. Thanks for taking your time to help me out. David
First of all, thank you for sharing such a great tutorial with us. I loved the idea of put my logo on a 3D world. I did the whole tutorial, but some things didn't work for me. And I hope you don't bother to help me. I don't want to give up, I'm determinated to do this thing. So, the first thing that didn't match was the align thing on Illustrator. I don't know why it's not working. I've selected the layer, but nothing happens. My second problem is the size and position of my layers on After Effects. The mask it's not matching with the jpg as yours. I tried to fix it manually, but when I do the texture thing (the UV) my "texture" doesn't go to the right place on my 3D logo. I'm excited about this tutorial. I hope you could help my with this things so I can finish it... Thank you very much!
Hey Daniel! Thanks for watching! Hmm not sure about the align issue off the top of my head, might be a good question to search, I found this page on Adobe's help that seems like it might help out: help.adobe.com/en_US/illustrator/cs/using/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cbc5f-62f2a.html Different forum post I found on the subject, little old but still may work: creativebits.org/illustrator_shortcut-_how_to_center_object But yah, the reason I centered it was because when you paste to AE it typically centers it there, so that will definitely save the time of having to nudge it manually, which you could do by selecting the mask in AE and moving it, then go back into the scene setup and just change any value so that it's not cached at the old position any more.
Very good tutorial Dustin. But I have a question. You mention when you are extruding the body that if the extrusion process has some kind of problem we can check out a video explaining how to solve them. I'm searching for that video and I'm unable to find it.
You could check out this one: Element 3D Tutorial: Extruding Objects with Illustrator Vectors It talks about importing from illustrator and some issues that may come up.
Thanks for the video! Could you use this same technique and create a slot reel? How would you map the texture around the reel instead of a flat surface like a rectangle?
Screen Punch Great (I subbed), either Max or AE tuts, both on VFX would be nice. I'm now for example figuring out how to best/easiest/fastest animate a flock of birds and a school of fish. Probably doing 3D animated image-sequences and using those as particles in AE with a NULL to control their path. Things like that, that look into interesting solutions for things you might come across during movie-making/animation. Keep them coming !
VFX Ltd™ This comment is from a long time ago, sorry! But the above tutorial case is best if you already have an existing illustrator file. If you had the Illustrator file and decided to auto-trace it in after effects even though you already have good clean paths, it wouldn't make sense. If you don't have an Illustrator file, then ya, auto trace is a fast way to to go.
Please help, how can I view multiple models at once, for example at 10:40 you've got a couple of models open but only one is shown at a time, can I change that?
Is the Hockey puck an obj model or an extrusion? If extrusion, it should be the same as this tutorial. If it is an obj (or from a model pack), you can take the texture maps into either After Effects or Photoshop to add a logo on it. There is a tutorial on VC that shows how to do this but with an Aircraft, but the concept is the same: videocopilot(dot)net/flightschool/decal_customization/
Hello, why is it necessary to have a jepg with white bg? why not just a PNG with alpha channel? Use layer as UV doesn't work 8:12 even tho my jpeg image and the mask for custom layer has exactly the same size. Finally what if you want to have a double sides logo, the backside appears flipped by default
How do you get the "Logo" on the back side of the extrusion? When i do this it is all scaled and positioned properly but when i pan around the back of it is just black...? Can you help?
Screen Punch Hey dear ! kindly help me i am trying but not getting what i want .. When i use camera tool with the element 3D object i don't get the motion like your object .. My logo rotates first than it goes to its point .. i don't get smooth motion with camera .. i want it to do both motions at same time like your does..
Hi Dustin, lov the tut. Question for you if you're still taking them years later.... I am trying to apply a logo from a jpeg/png/vector to my 3D model. I did it as a texture. However my model is a golf ball. The texture (logo) wraps around the entire surface and I only want to have the logo on the front. Can you help or direct me on how to shrink the logo texture so it doesn't wrap around the golf ball. Cheers.Your help would be appreciated.
This is a really old post but might help www.videocopilot.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=89155&p=304230 If you still are having issues hit me up on twitter with some screengrabs!
Hey Dustin Nice Tutorial!! I have run into a problem using AE and Elements 3d. I have a hockey puck which I got from the Elements plugin and I'm trying to add a logo to the top face. Is here a way you can make a tutorial for this or some how getting me the steps to create this. Thanks in advance. David.
Tried recreating this but the models back stays black. I even turned on the "draw backfaces" option and it still wont show the texture thats on the front. Any solutions?
Hey! Ah ok cool, yah I would say take that diffuse, drag it into it's own composition, then take your logo and place it on top of the diffuse in that comp. You may have to play around with the position, but once you get it in the right spot, you can go to Composition/Save Frame as/File, and just render out that one frame as a JPEG. The drag the new file to the Hockey diffuse slot. Doesn't matter what format your logo is, since it will be flattened out to a new JPEG file. Jet vid should help.
I'm trying to finish up a project, but I'm having trouble with Element 3D. Everything works fine except I can't get any custom layers/textures to work. No matter what technique I use to assign a custom layer or texture to a piece of the model the textures show up in the Assign Texture window, but won't show up in the Scene Setup Window or in After Effects. I can assign a comp as a custom layer or select an image and neither technique works. I've updated AE, Element and the drivers for my card. I was in contact with Video Copilot last week and sent them my project files and model, but I haven't heard back from them since Friday and the client really wants this project done asap. Anyone have any ideas?
Well... I need some help: Everytime I extrude something and want to texture it with the image the model was cut out from, the Texture is not fitting... The same happens for every model I import into Element 3D 2.2 and I'm searching for help since almost 2 months. I read about the UV-Mapping and so on, but nothing was happening and no step by step tutorial could help me fixing it. I've done every single step in this Video, e.g., but the texture won't fit... I don't know what to do now. I'd be glad for any help :)
Everything works except the align tool in Illustrator. I have to align my image manually as best I can. Even though I am not using the align tool, I do not move the image once it is placed. However, once I copy my files to After Effects and use element 3d, the jpeg is slightly off from the mask. Do you have any idea how to fix this? I am using the latest version of Element and Adobe CC.
I was having the same issue in illustrator as well. Go to where you align it at. You will see a box in the bottom right corner that says "align to" . Click that button and select "align to artboard". That fixed my illistrator problem. Only having done that, for some odd reason it seems i still have to line up the image in after effects with the extrusion. And im having the same issue you are, I cant seem to perfectly align the texture map to the extrusion. Ive got it as close as it can get, but i need another adjustable digit to get it perfect. The only option i can think of is to go into photoshop and paint in the small slivers that are missing. Very tedious work and still searching for a solution.
Trẫm Sup Hey! Watch from 4:06 to 4:32 it's copy/pasted from Illustrator to AE. As far as where it originally came from, just an online library of vectors. I just searched Jurassic Park vector.
Maybe somebody can help me... I have an .OBJ-File and want to colourize the logo which stands out a bit on the 3D-model. But when I give the 3d model in Element3D a colour the whole thing is going to be colourized and adding a second colour will colourize the whole 3D-Model in the second colour... How can I add two separated colours on the 3D-Model in Element-3D?
Personally id texture a 3D model in the software you made it in. If you didnt make it, get blender 3D for free on steam and a texture/mats plugin and do it there before importing.
Hey! Can you link a timestamp? Not sure when/what you're referring to. I copied and pasted the paths from Illustrator to After Effects, is that what you mean loaded?
Screen Punch Hey thanks for the reply. I mean, how did you get the splines/ paths on your logo in Illustrator in the first place. Did you manually create it and did not show it in the video? That's where i'm stuck. No sure if i have to create the splines as well. And what i wanted to ask is do you simply open an "image" in Illustrator as opposed to opening a project file which you did. I'm new to Illustrator and i always tend to find shortcuts around Illustrator :D
VFX Ltd No Prob! That file is a vector image so the splines/paths aren't on the image, they make the image. Then I did save it as a regular image file afterwards to load as the texture in Element. A lot of the time people have a vector version from a client or other graphic artist they can start from, but if you're starting from scratch I would just mess around in Illustrator for a while. Basically any shape you make (circles, boxes, path tool) is going to create a path that you can copy and paste to AE. Most path tools allow you to create a Stroke or Fill so that you can fill in your logo with color. The file I used I actually just searched "Jurassic Park vector logo", and found a free logo to use, I cleaned it up a bit but maybe searching for one might be good way to check out how it's built! --Dustin
how to i spin the 3D logo like you did? why i try to spin like you, the logo runs out the screen. i think its some kind of problems of anchor point? plz help me
+Maximus Lin Sounds like maybe the logo isn't centered, is it centered in the Scene Setup? Here's some info on anchor points and null objects that might help you animate: www.videocopilot.net/docs/element2/animating_3d_objects/adjusting_the_anchor_point/ www.videocopilot.net/docs/element2/animating_3d_objects/group_utilities_null_objects/
Hello, you did not show how both sides have image that is not mirror face on the back side..and one problem i have the back side is darker, i want the color same on the front side. pls respond asap. thank you
You are not thinking in 3D, the lighting is facing the front of the image. To get the same colour round the back you need another light at the rear. If you leave the cam at the front you can animate using the group 1-9 particle look settings. no need to move a camera other than in or out.
Creative Meddad Effects (FiLM Making) Are the mask path's lined up with your image? Is your texture image pre-composed or the same aspect ratio as the composition?
Use "group 1" in elements (or what ever group you are using) Open the setting and find a setting for particle look. There will be some rotation settings in there without needing to rotate a whole camera. Hope that helps!
I dont know whats going on!! Everything works perfectly, but when i load it to after effects, the model is in 2d Yes, ive tried to create a camera, but it doesn't work... i even rotated it and the result is a 2d layer PLS HELP
Hey guys! I can't figure out the settings to Copy and Paste a vector path from Illustrator to After Effects. I've read many articles online but no set of instructions solve the problem. I'm stuck on this one step and would really like to get the project I am working on completed ASAP. Can anyone shed some light?
it's probably pointless of me answering you a year or more after you posted your question. but all you have to do is literally copy your vector path on illustrator by selecting it and then edit>copy then move over to after effects and make a new solid within a composition and simply paste. this should create a series of mask layers.
Mission Failed Hey! The brown background? It just a AE solid, then a black solid on top with a feathered mask for the darker corners. Flare in the bottom left is Optical Flares.
I would say they are for different purposes. I know source is better for like game character animation type videos, and I think it's free. Element is more for motion graphics/visual effects. I'm sure you could do some of that stuff in source if you wanted. Best to give it a shot!
The same way but the settings are in different places. You need to turn on custom layers then set layer 1 to you logo shape, then set the texture layer in the drop down below the logo one. Then go scene set up, then your bevel, then the bevel texture settings. Look for defuse at the top, click "none set" and set your logo there. Next to load texture there is a drop down to the left of it to set you custom texture.
In Illustrator save the project as Illustrator version 8, then you can drag the Illustrator file into the c4d view-port to import the splines (you can also use file/open, or file/merge as well). Then just extrude like you would text, with the Extrude Nurbs modifier. If this doesn't make sense, I would say just search it, there are tons of video resources on this. Good luck!
187pod1 hah, whoops, I didn't answer your question at all. Off the top of my head, if you were just texturing the front face, you might set the uv mapping to Flat and use the Texture Tool to position. But as far as some sort of projection based on the spline position, I'm not sure. Good luck!
Hey! No prob, want to send me an email at dustin@videocopilot(dot)net. If you want you can include your logo in the email, and I can show you real quick in a project file and a couple screen shots. UA-cam comments are hard to explain stuff over haha
4 years later and I'm still referencing this video.
Yeah, the others dont explain as well.
Thanks for that pre-comping hint. Very helpful!
I was not expecting to see you here Nick! Long time fan!

You are a saint for making this tutorial. Thank you!
Thanks a lot! It was frustrating in the beginning. A quick tip: you save a lot of time by auto tracing. The whole illustrator step can be totally avoided imo.
In my case why uv mapping repeating the texture (tile) instead of applying as stretched?
You are the best, Thank You Very Much
Awesome tutorial Dustin, Thank You very much. Professional!
It´s work well, It Help to fix the problem with the uv mapping Thanks.
Insane m8 been looking like this for a while :)
Duuude EPIC tutorial, helped me out a lot, THX :D
Thank you looks good. Saw this on twitter.
I didnt expect you will not include how it spin😕 ,but great tutorial 😀
great tutorial! :D
thankfully for me i just wanted to make a 3d version of gramophone record so it was a perfect circle thus no real problems with it :D worked out fine!
thanks
Dustin,
I have been trying for the past few days to follow what you have said as well as watching the VC video.

Shift+O gives you artboard adjustment options, no need to make new document to change you're resolution

Hey Dustin! Thanks for the tips!
Can you help me to create a plastic card with two different designs on the sides?
How it can be done?
Thank you, this has helped me greatly
Hey Dustin, Thanks for the quick reply. I got the hockey puck from Elements 3d Sports 3D model package. I imported it to AE and the grabbed the difusse jpeg and put it into my project and then into my comp.

Different forum post I found on the subject, little old but still may work:
creativebits.org/illustrator_shortcut-_how_to_center_object
But yah, the reason I centered it was because when you paste to AE it typically centers it there, so that will definitely save the time of having to nudge it manually, which you could do by selecting the mask in AE and moving it, then go back into the scene setup and just change any value so that it's not cached at the old position any more.
thank you so much for pro tutorial 👌

this is nice, but is there any way to get the texture map to appear ONLY on the front of the logo and not ALL OVER the logo? It's driving me crazy!
do video on how u made logo spin in the beginning
For me, this process works great except my logo and/or texture, displays pixelated and faded. Help me.
Hey great video, but is there a way to send a static version of a 3d render from element 3d with a transparent background to photoshop for more work?
Cant i just auto trace it in AE instead of using illustratior?

Basically any shape you make (circles, boxes, path tool) is going to create a path that you can copy and paste to AE.
Most path tools allow you to create a Stroke or Fill so that you can fill in your logo with color. The file I used I actually just searched "Jurassic Park vector logo", and found a free logo to use, I cleaned it up a bit but maybe searching for one might be good way to check out how it's built!

Where do you get all of your textures?
how can I get another picture on the back not the same one?
how to i spin the 3D logo like you did? why i try to spin like you, the logo runs out the screen. i think its some kind of problems of anchor point? plz help me
+Maximus Lin Sounds like maybe the logo isn't centered, is it centered in the Scene Setup? Here's some info on anchor points and null objects that might help you animate:

Hello, you did not show how both sides have image that is not mirror face on the back side..and one problem i have the back side is darker, i want the color same on the front side. pls respond asap. thank you
You are not thinking in 3D, the lighting is facing the front of the image. To get the same colour round the back you need another light at the rear. If you leave the cam at the front you can animate using the group 1-9 particle look settings. no need to move a camera other than in or out.
Amigo puede dar pack de elemento que tiene

please help! my texture doesn't fit to the 3d object what should i do !
Creative Meddad Effects (FiLM Making) Are the mask path's lined up with your image? Is your texture image pre-composed or the same aspect ratio as the composition?
Screen Punch i used the same image dimension and i didn't pre-compose my texture
is there a way to do this without illustrator?
how you make both side have texture?
texture does not fit me
Try using the same image size as your comp. or try setting the comp to the image size
Not able to rotate the logo, used the key for position in camera, wonder what i am missing
Use "group 1" in elements (or what ever group you are using) Open the setting and find a setting for particle look. There will be some rotation settings in there without needing to rotate a whole camera. Hope that helps!
@@YGBHawk THANKS, U SAVED MY LIFEEE
You don't name your solids :O
How to insert image in Element 3D
when i upload the texture to the logo, it is very light, how do I change that?
Next to the texture layer turn the defuse number down
how to download the metal texture?
I dont know whats going on!!
Everything works perfectly, but when i load it to after effects, the model is in 2d
Yes, ive tried to create a camera, but it doesn't work... i even rotated it and the result is a 2d layer
PLS HELP
I've got the same problem!
Smiem Someone else told me the solution - make the camera a 2-node camera
Problem solved

Thanks man!!
Thanks for watching!
Hey guys! I can't figure out the settings to Copy and Paste a vector path from Illustrator to After Effects. I've read many articles online but no set of instructions solve the problem. I'm stuck on this one step and would really like to get the project I am working on completed ASAP. Can anyone shed some light?
it's probably pointless of me answering you a year or more after you posted your question.
but all you have to do is literally copy your vector path on illustrator by selecting it and then edit>copy
then move over to after effects and make a new solid within a composition and simply paste.
this should create a series of mask layers.
My uv layer didn’t fit at all
thanks
How did you do that background stuff?
Mission Failed Hey! The brown background? It just a AE solid, then a black solid on top with a feathered mask for the darker corners. Flare in the bottom left is Optical Flares.
Screen Punch thanks! I'll give it a try.
is source filmmaker better or is this better?
I would say they are for different purposes. I know source is better for like game character animation type videos, and I think it's free. Element is more for motion graphics/visual effects. I'm sure you could do some of that stuff in source if you wanted. Best to give it a shot!
K thanks
Where your hair line tho
ya i went there
in element 3d 2.2 how to add texture ?? like this
The same way but the settings are in different places.
This is way too complex, I just have a white text and a simple orange object. All of this makes me confused.
Anyone know how to do this but in cinema 4d?
In Illustrator save the project as Illustrator version 8, then you can drag the Illustrator file into the c4d view-port to import the splines (you can also use file/open, or file/merge as well). Then just extrude like you would text, with the Extrude Nurbs modifier. If this doesn't make sense, I would say just search it, there are tons of video resources on this. Good luck!
Dustin Hudson What I meant was how to get the texture or material, from the original logo on to the extruded logo? Thanks for quick anser
187pod1 hah, whoops, I didn't answer your question at all. Off the top of my head, if you were just texturing the front face, you might set the uv mapping to Flat and use the Texture Tool to position. But as far as some sort of projection based on the spline position, I'm not sure. Good luck!
Can it be more complicated please?
Hey!
No prob, want to send me an email at dustin@videocopilot(dot)net. If you want you can include your logo in the email, and I can show you real quick in a project file and a couple screen shots. UA-cam comments are hard to explain stuff over haha
this step does not leave me 7:38
Precompose (ctrl-shift-c) ;)
I wanted to put a background and a text on top of it on the same layer. How can I do that?
2019😭😎🤣
Hi, I like your work, can you work on my logo, let me know, thanks 🙏
You stroll to fast through the ambient occlusion :(
It's in render settings under E3D effect
You missed texturing the back side. Pls finish.
Easy, in the bevel settings under scene set up, look for a tick box that says fill back or something to that affect.
