I know this is a slightly older Meshuggah track, but I've wanted to play through Spasm in it's entirety since I played it in my 'Meshuggah - Nothing Album Medley' video last year. It has some of the best syncopated grooves out of all of Meshuggah's work and it also has that great rhythmical snare solo at 2:40 which was quite challenging but yet again extremely fun.
I hope you enjoy this song as much as I have and if you dig the 2 snare setup check out my 2 snare drum solo video:

3:08 - 3:35 Is probably my favorite part to play of any Meshuggah song. The flow and groove is so satisfying that sometimes i loop it and play just that bit for 25-30 minutes.
how do you loop it? plssssss i want to do da sameee
Yeah I love that part. The Nothing album has so many great grooves, I wish more recent Meshuggah stuff had that kind of lazy yet energetic groove and the more natural instrument sound from Nothing.
@@ericluque6573 drop the song in a DAW and use the loop tool on which ever DAW you use :)
NOTHING is definitely the grooviest Meshuggah's album, Thomas Haake is a fucking machine
One of the best sections in their entire discography. Just nasty
This is unbelieveable, I don't even drum but I'm pretty sure that rhythmically, this is one of the hardest songs on the planet. I'm not sure if people appreciate just how precise you have to be with this song - if you're not EXACTLY on time, the song will sound like sh*t because it is so syncopated. This is incredible man, amazing job.
Believe it or not but besides that awesome snare drum solo, this is actually one of their easier songs!
no actually this is one of the easiest meshuggah songs to play on the drums
My transcript is not dumbed down. The version that I have available on my website is what I use to read and learn the song myself. In drum notation you very rarely see ghosts etc. Ghost notes and especially the 8th notes on the left foot are an optional addition the drummers add for feel etc to drumming and should be somewhat automatic so I do not need to write all of that in. It will also make the part a lot messier and harder to read.
Great job dude. How long you been playing? I'm goin on 20 years and you really have your shit together. Admirable!
Hey Josh from 8 years ago 😂 😂 😂

Such a great player man...2:57 I just laughed at how complex that part is. Awesome job!
Do you already make an "I" drum cover?? If not, you should, you rock dude!!
+Rafael B. Yes, It's the only way to beat the all mighty Tomas Haake.
In the words ot Tomas Haake himself, "No one kows how I goes"
Amazing how much it costs to get things that sound good when you hit them with a stick.
I have some connection with 'Shuggah and I am most def going to urge them to play Spasm live. It's an awesome pievce of dark, sinister fucking groove. It is the song that made me look deeper into the wicked minds of Meshuggah. Great cover man!
That snare solo is on point. Great work all around.
Congratulations bro! It's really inspiring to watch you playing!
Olha o Betão aí!!!!
dude, by reading your descriptions while listening to you play, i can tell that you have to be the best drummer on youtube. you clearly have a lot of knowlage with music in general along with percussion. if more people knew about you instead of luke holland, the world would be a better place
IanW820 luke is pretty good too dude, I'm pretty sure he can play this stuff just as good as troy, but troy is more focused on polyrythems and prog stuff
My favourite part 2:40
Man, is an absolute pleasure to watch you play. You're always so profoundly focused into your rhythm that rhythm itself seems to tremble into its own axis. You're definitely an inspiration to keep playing and understanding music.
Perfect cover, sir. Outstanding. Couldn't agree more with your feelings on this song as set out in your description. Some of their very best syncopated grooves, characteristically off kilter but also with a wonderful swing to it somehow, and yeah, THAT snare solo. Fantastic!
Seen this vid for so many times, and still it just grips me by the nutters every time. Awesome job on one of the grooviest peices ever made; any genre. Cheers!
I seriously can't get enough of your playing!
I Love it !!! it looks terribly hard from Start to end. Tomas Haake is realy a Genius ! Fantastic cover !!
OMFG....just no words to explain what u`ve done there....absolutelly amazing!!
You're an animal, dude.. I'm blown away at how much control you have over your drumming
you're one of the few drummers whose drumming is enjoyable to watch. keep them videos coming!
nailed the snare solo. NAILED IT!
I remember that one day I was so in the mood for this track that it was playing for about 24 hours straight on repeat. Listening to it now feels like breathing, subconscious and fucken amazing 🦾🤖
I love the fills you do with the Cymbals :O
SO glad your ghost notes are finally audible. i could never hear them thangs before!
regardless if its an old track or not, still one of their greatest creations. great cover too man
I probably wont cover that song as there is other songs on that album which i would like to play through first. Demiurge is the 3rd song in my Koloss medley though!
love the snare sound
Still my favorite cover you’ve done so far. To say fucking phenominal would be an insult.
Fantastic song and drum cover! Great job!
As some one who's listened to this song far too many times- every note was perfect dude
your videos are pure motivation
It's set pretty stock standard. Check out my gear page in the description
Using Protools and Final Cut X for software. Mics I used here is in the description
Nailed it yet again, perfection.Keep them coming please!
Your drum set it pure beauty. Sound and all.
This is the best drumming I've ever seen
This is some fine extreme brutal jazz right there 👌🏻
You nailed it - and great choice of track for a drum cover.
I have listened to this about 15 times now, it's actually so good it astonishes me. Fantastic Job pal :)
Thanks mate. I've been playing for about 15 years
God DAMN!!! I can't stop watching this. Thx for all the great vids!
you have the best drum covers on youtube, period.
Wow.. perfect!! solid drumming!!
and what a nice cymbal songs!
Well, I've loved Meshuggah since forever, but never really intended to play their songs...You've inspired me to do so..And you've made the best Meshuggah drum covers I've seen online. Amazing dude ;) Nice kit BTW.
Very vivid drum mix, very good everything on this. Congrats man.
I love those snare heads....sick!
Troy, could you tell me if this is one of the hardest songs to drum in the world? I am a guitarist, but this is just ridiculous. I'm not talking in terms of speed or endurance, I'm just talking rhythmically - is it the hardest?
Troy you are the man dude, I will be using your transcriptions in the future and accrediting you in the video if I record my progress
make it look so easy. you're the man, Troy
I just finished playing and the first video I watch is this......back to the practice room. sheeesh Well played Sir!
That kit is magnificent. Nice job dude
How can anything be too much when you absolutely nail 2:40-3:08?
Massive kudos man!
Flawless cover, you really got the groove right. Nice job!
I'm going to be real honest, I have never seen a better drummer than this.... I've seen almost every one of your vids. Great Job man!
Wow.. perfect!! solid drumming!!
and what a nice cymbal sond!
Dude your ghost notes are freaking insane! Great job
freaking amazing troy. you are the only drummer on youtube who does tomas justice. insane groove.
This still amazes me!
this is the most amazing thing ive ever seen
dude, all your covers are sick. get jammin man
Your covers are too almost too good. It's on another level that all other youtube drum covers. Your playing makes me look bad. The abilty to combine feel and technicality is a very hard thing to achieve but here I am watching a flawless Meshuggah cover by Whrightdrums. MAD PROPS!
Nice sounding drums and great playing!
yeah someone else mentioned that.. i might do another video just playing that part with the right hand on the floor.. you have to introduce doubles on the left hand for that to work tho
This is amazing! Keep up the great work, man.
You're brilliant dude, you have such clean drumming!
This ridiculously good!
dude thats sick my favorite song !!!
yes most opportunities for playing ghost notes lie in between the right hand.. ghost notes aren't limited to just single strokes on the left tho... i actually play quite a lot of doubles in this song
Add an 18" floor tom and the auxillary hithats that we've seen in earlier videos to the setup, and the perfectness of the kit would be impossible to explain using the human vocabulary.
Friggin awesome cover, Troy is probably one of, if not THE best drummer on UA-cam.
All of your covers are amazing.... getting to the point where with guys like you out there why do I even bother hahaha. Can't see myself ever getting near that level... Great job again!
Damn awesome job Troy!
Thanks for all the videos
I'm taking on this song tomorrow when i'm home alone... and i WILL make it through. I'm glad i have this video to help me ;)
You could spend a lifetime perfecting this song and it would not be a wasted life. Thank you brother. Btw amazing job in Atlanta a few years ago with Intervals/Plini [ I believe ] opening for Animals as Leaders. I had watched your videos for a while, but when I looked on stage and saw you behind the kit I was like " ... OH SHIT LETS GO BABY!!"
Great cover as usual.
This is my favourite meshuggah song. FLAWLESS VICTORY!
Man you are awesome!! Simply amazing!!
that looks like a lot of fun man....wish I had my own kit
I have been watching this at least once a day since you have put it up. :D
Muito bom, como sempre. Parabéns.
MIND = BLOWN
I can play this song to an extent but now with this vid I'll learn all of it
Thanks, you rock!
(btw best drum vid I've seen on UA-cam)
Cool. Very impressive, and great presentation. Take a browse of my channel and let me know what you think. Don't bother lookin at Stengah, I can't keep count on the hi hat like I should!
Great as usual!!
Still, would like to see some recent Tesseract covered by you. Particularly Nocturne, Singularly and Embers.
Yeah mate, info is in the description
Well played dude, i think Spasm is one of the toughest Meshuggah songs to play at drums. Haake's fills in this song are full of dynamics and myself i really became crazy when i tried to play that part from 2:41 to 3:33
Thats mad impressive dude. The thing that impressed me the most was you being able to keep a steady pace on the hats with your foot while doing intricate kick patterns, as well as your hands..... Fuck man... Coordination at its best.
This is absolutely insane
you're awesome, i hope you got a chance to catch meshuggah on their american tour this year
EXCELLENT JOB GUY !
Really good job dude !
You, sir, are fantastic. You'll have legions of followers like Haake in no time.
To level of control you posses with your hands is phenomenal... I need to practice sooooo much more... Your ghost notes are fucking perfect. Im super jealous of your skill level.
Godlike! Besides all the audio, my favorite thing was the tom cam :]
This is still the best thing ive ever seen in the known universe
It's videos like this that I let load for half an hour in 1080p hah. So worth it ;D
Because my left foot is playing such a constant rhythm (motion) it's not really adding to my independence, it's just like playing 8th notes with the right hand for example
this video has only been up for less than a day and we already cant help but argue.
i think this was sick, loving the snare throughout the whole song. id like a video briefing whats going on exactly. what polyrythms are being used and break it down a little.
GODAMN BRO!
This is fucking TRUTH right here.
you BLEED raw talent.
Awesome to watch.
Hails and Wails.
wow - outstanding!
Un. Fucking. Real. This cover is SPOT ON. Ghost notes and hi hat chiks alike. Impeccable.
The main 'issues' with this track is the bloody tempo and then the quick 'kick-snare' part of the intro and verse that falls right before the hi-hat accent. That part can really screw you up ^^
But the snare solo...oh man! When you get it right is just feels like heaven :-)
Can't wait to get my own version up, once my studio is done.
Excellent work man!
AMAZING!
