    It's so nice to watch the video again after 6 months.
    I have rewritten all your examples.
    Your lesson is concise and easy to understand. Now I remember in what cases we should use 'have' but not 'get'.
    Thank you, Sarah, my teacher.

    Should I say 'I had closed the door or I had the door closed'

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mab, for your first sentence it depends on the context, it could mean someone did it for you or simply a past tense and using planned as an adjective. For the second example, both sentences are correct but the meanings are different. "I had closed the door." is just the past perfect and "I had the door closed," is slightly unusual but could mean someone did it for you. I hope that helps.

    Have is a stative verb.so we can use having my pools cleaned mam
    Can you explain mam

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  3 роки тому

      Hi, When have means possess or own it is stative and so is NOT used in the continuous form:
      He has a new car. Not :He is having a new car.
      He had 2 sons. Not He was having 2 sons.
      - However, when have is part of a phrase (have a shower, have lunch or in the causative) it is dynamic and so can be used in the continuous form, depending on context:
      I have lunch every day. / I’m having lunch now.
      I had a shower this morning. / I was having a shower when you called. So you can say, I am having my pool cleaned. I hope that helps!

    what makes get/have different?

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  10 місяців тому

      "Get" and "have" are both verbs, but they are used in different contexts and convey different meanings. Let's explore the main differences between "get" and "have":
      Possession:
      "Have": It is often used to indicate possession or ownership.
      Example: "I have a car."
      "Get": While "get" can also indicate possession, it is often used to convey the process of acquiring or obtaining something.
      Example: "I need to get a new phone."
      Action or Achievement:
      "Have": It is used to express actions or experiences, often in the sense of possessing or undergoing them.
      Example: "I have lunch at noon."
      "Get": It is used to describe the action of obtaining or receiving something.
      Example: "I need to get my diploma."
      Causative Use:
      "Have": It is commonly used in a causative sense, indicating that someone causes something to be done for them.
      Example: "I had my car repaired."
      "Get": It is also used in a causative sense, but it emphasizes the action of obtaining or causing something to happen.
      Example: "I need to get my hair cut."
      Becoming or Changing State:
      "Have": It is used to express states or conditions.
      Example: "I have a headache."
      "Get": It is often used to convey the process of becoming or changing state.
      Example: "I'm getting tired."
      In summary, while there is some overlap in their usage, "have" is often associated with possession, experiences, and causative actions, while "get" is more commonly used to describe the process of obtaining, acquiring, or causing something to happen. The specific context and meaning can vary based on the sentence structure and the overall context in which these verbs are used.

    Excuse me , what is the difference between the two basic sentences in terms of purpose ( against or for )though the answers are the same?
    1- A photographer took her picture.
    She had her picture taken.
    And
    2 - A photographer took a picture of the witness.
    The witness had her/ his picture taken.

    • @oxfordenglishnow
      @oxfordenglishnow  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ahmed, I don't really understand your question. The difference between the first 2 sentences is that you are using a pronoun instead of a noun. 😊

      It is correct that I didn't make my question clear, so let's start again with the second sentence .It is naturally for Aphotoghrapher to take the picture of the witness in police station or in the court without asking him/ her to do that, that's mean without the witness'will .My question concentrates on the first sentence: A photoghrapher took her picture. Did she ask the photographer to take her picture or not ?

      Hi, I would recommend you watch my lesson again as I go over when you can use get and when have. Basically get is less formal than have.
      Also, have something done is used for a negative experience and not get. When something happens to somebody, or their belongings when someone is affected by an action which they did not cause. Usually what happens is unpleasant and unwanted.
      For example, Gary had his bag stolen.
      Hope that helps! 🙏

    Thanks for the video. I just was looking at the example where (Gary got his money stolen). I just didn't like the photo of the lady who was put in the suspect thief position as she was the thief. It was so offensive.

      Apologies, not meant this way at all... the woman is phoning to try and help find his bag.

      No. It was not. Put your glasses on. Her body language says something else.

    Have a doctor examine your eyes....by my much loved English teacher Paula-Maria. Get no negatives . Informal.

    He is expected to be late for school."expected "here is an adjective. What does the above sentence mean?

      Here you have the passive and expected is the past participle of to expect. It means it is thought to be highly likely that he will be late for school.
