    Just discovered your channel and really enjoy it. I live in the Maine woods on a peninsula away from folks. Loved the woods, hunting and fishing but unable to walk more than a few steps at a time now so do my outdoor time watching UTUBE. Turning 81 in a few days. Making your chicken and rice recipe for supper tonight. Did kill a moose three years ago. Good eating.

    Bear trap, Interesting!!! I LOVE your accent, I'm from Missouri so mine is different! I love Maine. took a ride a few years ago and spent a while sightseeing. we were peepers but the leaves were late that year!

    I figured out how the trap works or is supposed to. The bait in the bag goes in the PVC pipe first, then the wire frame goes in over that, remember that the wire frame, fits into 4 slots on the pipe with small bent arms on the outside of the pipe, that rest at the bottom on the ground, then the steel Cable goes over the pipe LAST and rest on the small bent arms. Then when the Bear takes the rock off of the pipe and reaches inside the pipe to get the bag of bait, as the Bear raises the bag up, the frame comes up as well and the small hooks on the outside of the pipe, moves the cable up as well, which at least a foot higher than the bag of food and is now spring loaded, wrapped around the bears arm, higher up than the food, so when the Bear takes off with the food, the cable is wrapped around the bears arm and tightens as the cable starts getting resistance on it and basically, tightens and snares tightly on its arm, to keep it from going any further and makes it weaker, when trying to get loose and easier to kill, when someone returns to the site. A Very sneaky trap.

      @MaineGirlOutdoors  Рік тому +3

      Yeah it just holds his paw there. The cable connects to the tree and just holds it. You've got to check the trap first thing in the morning every day so as not to have him stuck there any longer than necessary.

    Pour Black oil sunflower seeds in the trap pour a little bit of molasses over it you'll have your bear . They can't resist those seeds trust me try it. Good luck.

    Something about that setup making that bear nervous..I think he is thinking the smell of sweets comes from what he can see on the ground and is missing the trap under the rock.. He should smell it but..? Next time keep the rock off the top of it..Your frequent visits ain’t good but not much you can do.. 👍

      I stay away as much as I can (Just walking in far enough to see it, it's the law to check it everyday). It's actually the law to have a weight on top of the trap to avoid non target species. Plus the coons would probably clean it out before the bear gets there.

    • @MaineGirlOutdoors

      We eat the meat, use the fat for cooking, making soap and the bones for bone broth.

    Can you explain how the trap works I don’t get it sorry

    • @MaineGirlOutdoors
      @MaineGirlOutdoors  Рік тому +1

      You place your bait at the bottom of the tube, then the wire frame with hooks goes down on top. The spring-loaded cable then goes over the tube above those hooks. The bear reaches in to get the goodies, pulls up on the bait which then lifts the wire frame. As the frame comes up, the hooks push the cable up off the tube on over the bear's paw and holds it. I will do a demonstration next time I have to mess with it.

      @@MaineGirlOutdoors Alive and kickin'. My wife and I lost a fellow HS friend late last week. It was sudden. We are still shocked. We graduated HS with him and his wife, now widow. Growing old sucks!!! He was only 55 years old. The 50's are a time where you're not old in your mind and passions, but the body is betraying you!
      That's the best way that I can put it.

    I’m surprised Maine still allows bear trapping. I’m not against it and am a trapper myself. I am intrigued by it and hope to see the video when you catch the bear. What if it has cubs? Can you still harvest it? I’m gonna keep watching till you get it for sure.

    • @MaineGirlOutdoors
      @MaineGirlOutdoors  Рік тому +2

      Legally, you can harvest a sow in the fall that has cubs, but I'd never want to do that. We use cameras on the sites to see what bears are hitting the bait. That way we can avoid getting a sow and/or cubs. We actually started baiting a different site, and just when I was going to set the trap a sow and cubs showed up. So we abandoned that site, not wanting to catch them.
