Because of your videos I have purchased a Xarilk gen3. I will assemble it incorporating your tips. Thanks for all your careful research into the product. 👊
In the process of putting one of these together with upgrades and tweaks to achieve fantastic results. Thanks for all the great tips and your own time for trial an error.
Great Videos! I am using the same clamps that you are, and they are superior to any set screw stopper. They have several times more clamping force, and do not slide, like the set screw stoppers, which then scratch the rod. I also use a rubber washer in front of each one. O rings would do the same, no hard impact. The stainless steel screws should be lubricated to stop galling. Anti seize or anything but dry. I am not sure if I missed it in any of your videos, but the rod should be greased. Supersmooth. Also several other places to lubricate before wear and play is created.
Maybe add an outro to your videos so we remember to hit the like button before UA-cam switches to the next video for those of us whou are listening at work and cant always watch. Love your attention to detail! Keep it up brother!
Great videos. I recently purchased the Gen 3 and have learned from your videos and insights. Thank you!! I’d like to share and ask a few questions regarding your sharpening technique if I may. I also found the need for stops to limit push and pull strokes. I wanted to share I found Hapstone Spring-Assisted Stoppers (6mm) at gritomatic’s website ($6.00ea). They work really well. The thumb screws make adjustments easy, plus the springs help cushion the impact when reaching the limits. Highly recommended. In your video, you suggest lowering the rod to its lowest level. Some have pointed out the rod hight adjustment should always equal the stone height. If you change to a stone that is thinner or thicker during sharpening, you readjust the rod’s height to that stone’s height. The logic is the rod angle at the blade will stay constant. For example, my ceramic stone is 1.25mm thicker than the diamond stones I use. If I raise the rod by 1.25mm, the rod angle at the blade should be identical as it was with the thinner stone. In your opinion, is this height difference significant and worth doing or insignificant? What is your preferred stroke motion when sharpening? Do you prefer using a sweeping motion? or a push/pull motion keeping the stone rod perpendicular as you move across the blade? What is your setup approach when you do a resharpening or touch-up? How do you place the knife back in the clamps to get the angles just right to match the previous sharpening angle? Do you know if TSprof Kadet Pro clamps fit the Xarilk Gen3?
@@SPas-c3q I am about to publish another video. Some of your questions will be answered in it, it’s like you read my mind. That said, I don’t recommend any additional blade clamps for Gen 3. Haven’t found any need for them yet. I feel that a certain sharpening guru and reviewer is abusing his popularity due to his affiliations with TS Prof and Hapstone to push some of their add-ons for the commissions. I am sharing techniques that minimize consumption of such items even at the expense of losing the potential profits. I stick to the bare minimum and get incredible results at minimum expense.
Exactly what I suggested, the SYtools 10pc set for 30 bucks completes the set and makes for a very usable abrasive set and fixed system for less than 120 bucks.
Thanks, Lacy! The prices are a little higher though, the 10PC set was $39 and the sharpener now is $98. Maybe they will drop a little for Thanksgiving?..
CBRX, my Xarilk Gen 3 does not ratchet all the way down. The lowest it goes is 20.1 degrees. From the top going down it has stopped just below the second mark. It looks like it has a 1/4 inch to go but won’t. How do I make it go lower. Is it defective? Thank You.
@@judgetoogood1033 20 degrees is all I get from the geared adjustment and it looks like it’s by design. Plus I can raise the gimbal 10° for 30° total per side. The only knife I’ve ever seen with over 25° per side was a Medford. What are you sharpening?
I did all the mods you showed us when I turn the knife to other side the angle if off some times more than 1 degrees. I really like everything else about this sharpener I hope I can figure out how to fix.
@southside1975 No, that’s not what I meant. Leave the knife clamped. The clamps come off the rail when you remove the screws in the back. Flip the whole thing over: the knife with clamps attached.
You might want to try an emulsion CBN abrasive on your strops. IMHO CBN works much better than the crayon type abrasives especially when working with modern super steels.
About diamond stones. Next step after your diamond galvanized stones is diamond bonded stones. And that market is heavely ukrainian 🤭 PDTools, Hapstones, AlDim, KDTU all are Ukraine based. Sourced from Poltava diamond tools factory i think.
@@CuttingBoardRx excuse my english please, ill try. Behind that rotary block is the flat surface. You can zero here then go to stone holder and that is your angle No need to zero on horizontal suface first and then do math
Smartwatch over sleeve cracked me up. Who the hell carries a smartwatch over their sleeve?! Also... most of the tips are worthless if person uses Common Sense® 2024. And a smartwatch UNDER the sleeve.
Smartwatch over the sleeve is legit, like a scuba diver or astronaut. Only thing that would make it better is if the watch was rotated to the flexor surface of the wrist, then it would be like an astronaut sniper.
Of course, if you zoom in on the watch, you will realize that I’m using it to monitor and control the camera remotely. Look up Dumber Krueger Effect, it will help you out.
Your comments are much appreciated! The more the merrier!

Can those grub screws on the collars be swapped out with thumb screws or wing nuts?
@@notapplicable6274 Good idea! I am sure they could, and would work great, as long as you could get enough leverage to sufficiently tighten them.
Great update. Was looking for stops to add.Thank you
Thank you for confirming the 6mm diameter of the guide rod and the split bushing recommendation.

The 7 stands for .7% carbon is 7cr. The number after the cr is the chromium number. Like 7cr13 or 7cr18. 7% wouldn't even make it stainless.

Have you tried simply unbolt the clamps with the knife in them and flipping them over on the other side? May reduce the difference.

I’ll grab an emulsion off Amazon. I go for the cheap stuff because I’m a hobbyist, not a professional, like Lacy or Neeves
