This is the all new LMDE 6, and it’s trending right now, LMDE is short for Linux Mint Debian Edition and it’s an extraordinary distro from the makers of the wildly popular Linux Mint.

I’ve deployed LMDE on all my client desktops. The end users love the Cinnamon desktop, and management is delighted at how much desktop support costs have dropped since transitioning away from Ubuntu. I’ve had several users tell me they liked LMDE so much they’re now using it on their home PCs and laptops.

I am currently migrating to LMDE6 from Mint. I like the stability of Debian 12. And the Mint additions are superb. I no longer feel comfortable with depending on Ubuntu. LMDE6 is greatness.

Another excellent, extremely well produced; and thought out synopsis of LMDE.These videos, are hands down the most informative videos I have seen ,in the UA-cam Linux verse. Well done to all involved. I will install LMDE on my Samsung NP-R519,but will stick to MX Linux KDE,on my main PC.
Great video. I'm going to put LMDE on my backup laptop. I'll keep Nobara on my gaming PC for now, but I don't mind having a faster-moving distro on that machine. Mint always has a special place in my heart. It was my main distro for years before I moved to others.
I still run arch on my laptop but i run lmde 6 on my pc. loving the stability and the flatpacks really work well. thanx to the linux mint team. lmde has always had a special place for me.
LMDE is currently running my main system as well. I love cinnamon and then getting qemu/kvm running is great! I had a few crashes when running all my VM's but then increased the DE memory limit and things have been running pretty smooth ever since!
I started on MINT and have gone through about a hundred other distros and have come full circle back to MINT-- but I prefer the debian base- so LMDE6 is GREAT... just loving it... I even am able to do without my auto- tiling (the pop style auto- tiling NOT that keybanging bu....it!!!) and just LOVE it- it's rock solid , fast- and just great.
I'm a huge fan of the Mint project, it's not for me personally, but when I have to recomend a distro to a new Linux user coming from Windows, that's what I recomend them. I know it's a solid, reliable a stable experience, and it just works

Watching you from Linux Mint, and have tried out LMDE over several iterations. It IS an excellent Plan B, with version 6 currently running on my test-bed system. Cannot see a reason to be replacing Mint / Cinnamon on our daily drivers at this point, but it is nice to know I could if necessary.

Good stuff. These videos are always quality. I left Windows for Mint in 2014 and used nothing else until a few years ago when I discovered window managers. Still, I recommended Debian Cinammon for new users coming from Windows until LMDE could get it's development together, and boy did has it come together quickly. After watching this, I know I can comfortably recommend LMDE at this point.
Thank you for this video it was very informative. I just switche both my laptop and my home pc to this version of Linux Mint. All I have to say is the performace is off the chart better.
I had been testing Debian 12 and liked it. But seriously missed the Linux Mint additions. When LMDE6 came out I installed it on one of my computers. It was so good I upgraded a second one to LMDE6. It combines the best of Debian with the outstanding Mint additions which Debian 12 didn't have. LMDE6 is my go-to now. Very happy with it.
Excellent video! I've been a Linux Mint user since Ubuntu first went to the Unity desktop a long time ago. With LMDE 6, it looks like it might be time to slide over to it.
As you used LMDE 6 for this review, did you lose anything going from Mint 21.x to LMDE 6?

Great video! I see what looks like a Surface making an appearance. I have a Surface Pro 6 (8gb i5 with the keyboard and the pen if I ever remember where I put it) that doesn’t get much use and I’d like to try out modern Linux. Would you recommend LMDE for that device?

looks very clean, im currently on Garuda Linux and it's been amazing, has similar clean windows like interface and themes, ill keep an eye on LMDE though.
I absolutely recommend Mint and Cinnamon. Of all the distros, Mint is both flexible and easy. I recently tried LMDE because, like others, I'd like to leave Ubuntu behind. I'm wondering if the device drivers included in Debian are not as extensive as Ubuntu. I ran into issues with both WiFi and Bluetooth on LMDE. They worked, but not consistently. I'd really like LMDE to be my go-to distro.
I’ve switched from Ubuntu to LMDE 6, shortly after LMDE 6 was released.
Had multiple issues within Ubuntu, which I manually resolved. Also didn’t like the direction Ubuntu is going.
Was super surprised how easy LMDE 6 is to use. Stability is noticeable there and no more snap ! Everything works out of the box ! 👌🏼💪🏼
Love flatpack which means you’ll always be up to date.
I tested out LMDE on a virtual machine and I shared the enthousiasme One issue I found is that hardware support is not as good as under Ubuntu based Mint. While the latter worked out of the box, using add driver, with WiFi on my old MacBook, with LMDE there was no way to get the WiFi working. With another system the video card was not recognised so it did not start up at all. Again with Ubuntu based mint it started without issue.

In Ubuntu, 49" ultra wide is not supported by default. Also needed to install external drivers to even make use of my docking station.
With LMDE 6 I haven't installed any external drivers so far, or they were installed automatically. Works great !
Have you tried bare metal installations yet?
@@insanity83NL what is meant, is ubuntus amount of drivers available, aswell as the HWE stack. this does not apply to debian (yet?), so depending on how new your hardware is, it may fail.

Mint is my favorite Linux distro hands down. I think LMDE will be my go to from now on.
I know that I can update the Debian core via /etc/apt/sources.list to testing or even unstable. But is that advisable? Will it work with the Mint additions? Or should I stay with Debian testing + cinnamon?
I couldn't agree more. This is my daily driver and it's fantastic. In my opinion LMDE is the king of distros 👑
If I didn't game on my PC I would 1000% be on LMDE or Debian.
@@Masta_E I recently saw a tech article where they measured the performance of gaming in Steam on Windows Vs Linux. Linux performance was 15% better .....
@@MrOrtmeier I game on Linux, but I use Arch or EndeavorOS. I have found the distros that are more up to date work so much better for gaming. The only time I boot into windows is for bf2042 if some friends or online, or destiny 2. The rest have been gtg on Linux.

THANK YOU!!! I gave up on trying to get ubuntu to access shared folders on my windows machines. And the ubuntu start menu is just awful. I installed LMDE and it just works the way it's supposed to work. I can access windows shared folders and the start menu is beautiful. I love the Cinnamon desktop.

I tried following the tutorial for lmde5 for btrfs install, but mounting the sda3 to the /target directory just does not work and gives error of wrong fs type /target.

It also takes only 2 lines of terminal code to completely replace Cinnamon with Mate, for those (like me) who prefer the same look but with fewer bells and whistles., I personally would be in heaven if they would add Moksha desktop to LMDE.

Thank you for the optimistic review. I've been using LMDE since version 2 and have always been impressed with it's performance, on anything. I run it on a Chromebook as well! I'm surprised how it's typically seen; half see it as 'bleeding edge' while the other half say it's 'good for newbies' (what?). I started on Ubuntu and it was kindas buggy and uglier at the time but I didn't want a 'Newbie Mint' and didn't like it at the time either. I jumped into LMDE and have the best of all worlds and have had it as daily driver on multiple systems for years. I currently tried LMDE6 on a Dell XPS touchscreen tablet - it worked immediately and blows away the default Windows 8!

I like that LMDE doesn't have the Mint cinnamon driver manager, which I could never get to work. The Nvidia driver from the repository works flawlessly and doesn't bork my system like driver manager does.
I use Mint and MX 19 and 21. I have a triple boot laptop that is running MX 19, 21 and Voyager that I am trying out.
I love mint since 2014, everything just works, even had the best gaming experience over "gaming focused" distros like, garuda, regata, nubara, popos. Mint more games work and without doing anything extra. Btw, can get much games to work on Garuda gaming edition, distro look awesome thou

I just bought your online course, and I have two questions for you. First, I have the latest lmde-6-cinnimon-64bit download, as well as Rufus to create a bootable USB drive for LMDE. Should I format the drive to FAT32, or NTFS??? Second, my hearing is impaired, and I often have to rely on the CC feature here on UA-cam, thank you for enabling it here on your channel. Is there a way for you to enable CC on your instructional videos??? Thank you in advance!!!!

Is there any way to fix screen brightness control issue in gaming laptop in linuxmint and ubuntu
LMDE is there in case if Ubuntu fucks everything up. Many people love it. I'm using regular Mint MATE, but I'm thinking about trying LMDE to see how different it is from Ubuntu-based Mint.
There should be a XFCE version and switched to the main Mint distro, tools simular to MX tools added.
I mostly use Debian, I've used LMDE too and mostly it's good, I enjoyed it, but, it's basically just Debian with flatpaks already configured and few extra tools installed. But I'd still use it even though I'm not a big cinnamon fan

I've used Ubuntu based Mint, and I like it. I don't care for Canonical and want to use LMDE-6. But, I also want to utilize Radeon FSR when gaming. Is that possible with LMDE-6, or would I be better off using Debian-12 Xfce? Or, can I install LMDE-6 and then install Xfce after? Obviously I am still a novice, but, that's ok. Learning is half the fun.

I've been using Peppermint for years as prime for multiple pc. What's the catch in this? I mean bcs everything works on Pepper and this is just one like it.
Honestly Linux Mint's seriousness in using Debian will be their saving grace for the future.
They could rub shoulders with Ubuntu.

Tex.... I simply love LMDE-6..... after many, many other distro installs, LMDE-6 was the only one that installed w/out any hiccups, burps or crashes....! The others..... they couldn't find my Wifi card or my Wifi dongle plugged into the USB port.....! LMDE-6 is on one 1 TB 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD and the 1 TB 2.5" 5400 RPM HDD has MX-Linux running on it..! W/a dual-boot system I choose which one I want to work on...... and lately that's been LMDE-6.....! Those two being on a DELL Latitude E6540 machine I added 12 GB of sdRAM to make 16 GB Total and an Intel i7-4810 quad core CPU w/8 Threads it screams all day long at 2.80 GHz..... and doesn't even get warm....! Yesterday I dismantled the whole Laptop as the "Power On" button that sits flush with the palm rest all around the keyboard area, had fell down into the innards of the case. I had to use a jewelers tiny screw driver to maneuver the button into position, then lightly push down, to even turn the Laptop ON...! That got old really fast...! The plastic Power On button was glued to the underside of the Palm rest but the 2 thin plastic pins were both broken..! I just laid the whole thing on its back and dropped some small dabs of Super Glue on each where they had been broken from, let it dry .... and all was good, then reassembled the Laptop..! It took a couple of hours, all toll... Now i just barely touch and press it lightly till the light comes on.... and my finger is off it.....! =)

LMDE 6 does not work with the ryzen 7 5950x a newer version of debian is require to have the correct microcode to support that processor. Thats why I had to go back to mint 21. 2.
I have LMDE6 on my main desktop, my other desktop has Debian 12 Cinnamon, my Mini PC has Debian 12 Cinnamon, as well as on my modded old Chromebook. Flatpack is what got me off the Ubuntu based Mint Cinnamon, plus the buntu based Mint cinnamon would only see my soundcard, Audigy Soundblaster FX 7.1 as stereo only, but LMDE6 saw it right, so it was bye bye buntu based Mint. I've been using Mint since 2011, as it says on my Mint forum ID date I joined. Switching to Debian base has had me start learning again, and it's not difficult, just different, like video and wireless drivers, I got it down now for Debian/LMDE6 :)
Hi Lee, I upgraded to LM 21.3 , did a fresh install. When I plugged all my accessories in, it just worked. I have been on Mint since 2017/2018... and there were always problems getting the accessories sorted out. My experience was /is with 21.3, it was all painless.
I am looking forward to trying out LMDE6 and Debian 12 on my other PC's.
Oh, one thing with LM 21.3..... if anything doesn't work, get rid of the 5.15 series kernel and install the 6.x (I am currently 6.5) and it will definitely work. I have one of the "latest and greatest" PCs, so the old kernel had a problem with some hardware... the new kernel had no issues at all. SO think about the age of the PC, will the std kernel work,
or should you upgrade to new kernels... that can be selected by installing 'EDGE", or manually later. Best of luck....

Will LMDE install on a secure boot system? I currently use Zorin OS 16 Pro, which works on a dual boot system with Windows 11. I need to have Win 11 for gaming and some games require secure boot (Fifa 23/FC24). I was going to use Manjaro but it wouldn't even boot the USB, I even set the secure boot to setup mode, but it just wouldn't allow it. I tried turning off secure boot, it installed, but as soon as secure boot was re-enabled it wouldn't boot Manjaro.
I remember hearing that you had to install and update it before enabling secure boot, but that was a while ago so it probably works out of the box now.
anything installed along side windows, well that situation can be a problem. I had to do some googling and Forum research. The answers are there. It can take a while, but in the end you will get there. Many people say to turn secure boot off, and leave it off.... well OK? But if it is easy and it works... something about that appeals to me.
But always make sure that your windows (if you must), is first on the PC.... then you install your other O/S. Not the other way around !!
I have a windows 11 and LM21.3 side by side setup on one NVMe... I did run into problems, and had to google my way out of them. Your "secure boot required" games,
now that's a problem. What about 1 Windows PC for your games....and another PC for everything else? That may be the easiest way out.
Always have a spare working computer, for when you Bork something !! Very important advice right there....
I am a fan of Mint And I also liked LMDE Version of Mint I currently have Mint 21 on my notebook I had to flash the BIOS to install because it was an Android version in other words a cheap lap top...lol!! as far as using Linux on a PC...Well as soon as Creative and Linux decide to play nice unfortunately I am stuck with phukn Winblows in order to enjoy 5.1 surround on my stupidly expensive audio system (not really made for a PC) that I have managed to cobble together an amazing all in one. Trust me I have been trying to switch to Linux since 1999 and so far there has always been something that is too much time nd work to deal with. OK Bring on the Flaming!!

Quick question ... it may sound stupid but it is worth it to ask. Is it possible to move from Mint to LMDE without having to reinstall my machine and the software installed on it. I am guessing the answer is no but maybe someone tried already.

I don't see a 'link in the description below' for installing nVidia drivers. I did, however, use Synaptic to do it, and while it appears to have worked, LizardByte's Sunshine Streamer app does not detect my RTX-3080, and instead falls back to using a software H.264 encoder. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I use Blender and rely heavily on Nvidia GPUs for my work but never could get them work in any of the Debian based distros despite I wanted to switch onto it. This is the reason I have to stick with Ubuntu based distros where Mint has been my choice of OS on my primary workstations due to it's rock solid stability.

I didn't wait long to see if someone would provide a solution to my Sunshine streamer problem. Instead, I just wiped my LMDE 6 installation and put 'regular' Mint Cinnamon on it, because it works perfectly with my GPU.

Kubuntu is great - it looks like Linux Mint but more modern
Debian is one of the oldest and with more technical developers than other linux distros. Stability and reliability is the main focus of Debian, it is why some people prefer other distros with more recent versions of the software installed but possibly less stable. Gnome is the best looking desktop environment but it may take some computer resources, so it is good for a not old computer. Xfce is the best desktop environment for older computers or computers with few resources. KDE desktop environment doesn't belong to my preferences, its aestethics is poor and its configuration settings are a nightmare, too much, too many.

I have tested a bunch of distorts, Debian, Arch, Fedora, Opensuse, Ubuntu, PopOs, MX, Zorin, and many, many, more, all popular distorts. But only Mint (and finally LMDE) is the only one that just works out of the box and cause almost no issues.
Same experience here. I read so many reviews of the Top 10 distros. ElementaryOS, Pop_OS!, Zorin always made the list. Compared to Mint, they are all under-featured and difficult to use.

Have you solved this? As I have 2021 gaming laptop (not high perf) on i5 and GTX1650 and struggled a bit after installation of LMDE5-> upgrade to LMDE6. Now its good.
So is this another distro where I'm gonna have to run day in day out as an "Admin" user just to accomplish simple tasks?? I forget the proper name for it, but Linux really has trouble "elevating" rights for one task, something win and mac seem to have figured out pretty well, when the system needs an admin password it asks for it and continues on, Linux just fails to get the task done, usually with no error notifications or a completely uninformative error!!!
Is the chrome browser still over two gig download using APT???
I downloaded the ISO and tried to get it to run under Windows 10 HyperV VMcreate just to see if it was worth the hype.
The ISO didn't even get passed the first black screen looking for some PXE network driver or whatever.
Do Linux devs even test their software before they roll it out the door?
Don't tell me an operating system is great if the installer can't even boot in a virtual machine.

Still running LMDE5 on one of my desktop PC's. There isn't (much) difference with "LMUE" 🙂(Linux Mint).
I'll give it a shot. It might fix some annoyances I have with cinnamon and it's 4K unfriendliness.

I started using Linux back in the late nineties. My first distro was Caldera running KDE. I’ve dipped in and out since then but mainly used apple products. (They work) To be honest after all these years it just hasn’t developed to a point where it’s going to make the average user dump windows or apple. You still have to mess around with the terminal and drivers which for me isn’t a problem but most users are not going to want to delve into that. The software market just hasn’t invested large scale into this system. Back in those early days I had real hope for Linux but I’m afraid it just hasn’t blossomed into the operating system it should have. Go into any main computer store like curry’s and you won’t find a single computer for sale running Linux. (Don’t include Chrome) The vast majority of average users have never heard of LInux and I’m afraid this distro isn’t going to change anything. Linux is still a hobbyist tool and will only be used as a main system for enthusiasts.
As a current mint user, i would like to switch to lmde but i don't want to reinstall mint as i have windows 11 living alongside and also I've configured mint a bit more. is there a way to "upgrade" my existing mint install to lmde?
no. You need to sacrifice Mint. But Win 11 should stay where it is now. Ok, you need to repair GRUB to make it run properly again.
I actually prefer the Mate desktop and hopefully LMDE., will also be available with the Mate desktop in due course.
The LMDE 6 installer kernel panics for me. I have 3 other distros installed with no problems, including Debian.
I,ve tried several versions of Linux, and have experienced sound problems in all. No sound at all.

The way thing are going LMDE may set up new trend among distros. Most ubuntu derivatives might eiher switch over completely to debian as base or have both but in this case odds are in favour of LMDE killing off ubuntu based Mint completely. I am gonna switch over to linux but my distro of choice will be Debian because i feel comfortable using it and if i decide to selfhost servers i can build everthing on top of debian which makes updating everything much easier. Honestly if debain derivatives kill off all ubuntu derivatives by replacing(meaning same distro but different base) them i wouldn't be surprised because most are community focused but ubuntu while still popular isn't so comunity focused as it once was.
Not just stable but rock solid stable
I didn't know this was out yet, I'm so satisfied with 5. I've used it full time since version 2. Back then they recommend it 'for power uses', like too advanced for Mint users, nonsense. Then they started saying 'good for less technical users than Debian - more nonsense. Thanks for being one of the few who admit that 'it's the best of both worlds.' I find it stable, strong, advanced and clean, and snappy. I run it on new system, old systems, laptops, even a Chromebook. Keep It Simple, Stupid. I hate any other OS, especially Windows....
I was reluctant to move from Mint to LMDE thinking it was going to be less user-friendly.
But, once LMDE 6.0 was released and I saw some good reviews, I thought of trying it.
It seems faster and less bulky with the same user interface.
Now, I won't go back from LMDE to Mint(Ubuntu).
It doesnt work well on an HP Pavillion, had too many keyboard issues. if I close my lid and reopen some times the keyboard will not come back and I am forced to reboot. their are other issues too, but you will find out if you want.
I use this on my 5YO laptop with 4gb RAM ; it freezes with just 3-4 tabs on chromium 😢
Can I put this on my windows 11 laptop to run alongside windows? Also can I use android apps on it if I do? ALSO what advantage is it over windows
advantages over windows....... do you like to use your PC without being bombarded by messages to 'do this or that' and you have no idea what is happening, but you have to click the "I Agree" key. Or 'pop-ups' all the time. Or automatic windows updates that you cannot stop. And many other ways of monetizing your ownership of the PC.. you always need to do this, or buy that, or upgrade your "whatever" program for only $50....
Now, Linux... is stable (the more popular 'Distros' or programs) and just work, even on old machines.... right thru to the latest equipment. However they are adjustable by software to meet most contingencies imaginable... but you need some knowledge for that part. (Or phone a friend!) But it is doable.
Second point, almost all Linux O/S's (Distros) are totally free. There are a couple or 5 or whatever that you can purchase, should you feel the need.
Almost all applications are free, and downloaded from you 'distro's' software repository, (a securely protected library of double checked safe software). Although you can download from the internet, that is not a safe practice..... but you can. Some paid software is available too.... if that fit's you needs, go for it.
Updates are installed by your permissions, or clicking a button. No sneaky compulsory updates.
You can install your linux alongside windows. Windows must be the first installed, and then install you linux along side. Normally this goes well, but sometimes there can be complications.... it is good to have a second working computer incase you have a problem.
Linux will run on most types of PC's including old ones right thru to the most modern.
There are no forced upgrades to the next linux O/S.... with windows you really don't have a choice.... after a while with no support, something unfortunate is likely to happen. Is Windows 7 supported now? the one that was quite good... NO, sorry about that. Did you have to eventually have to get Windows 11 and then discover that it wouldn't install because you have a senior citizen PC.....Oh sorry, just buy a new computer..... none of this crap happens on Linux.
About Android... I don't know for sure, but I suspect it works. But I have never tried this myself. Android is a derivative or based on Linux. You will have to google.... but many app's are multi platform
why all distro capped wifi speed upto 40Mbps ? whereas my plan is much more than that ! any solution of it?

I love Linux Mint its been my main desktop for years. Sorry modern looking is not one of its draws still looks like something out of the late 90's.
I love it that they are evolving and relying on something better like Debian instead of relying on the infamous Ubuntu! You know what they say, never put all of your eggs in one basket!
I have Mint Cinnamon Victoria on my 2012 MacBook Pro and it flies and I am very near to making a full shift from Windows to Linux. This is especially the case since I write books and have become accustomed to WORD but have now discovered SoftMaker FreeOffice which is as near a MSOffice clone as you can find. Also, using WINE, I can run some older software, that only ran on MS and Apple machines, such as ArcSoft Photostudio from 2000. At this point, I don't care if MS goes subscription because they can shove it. As for MAC, I truly hate the OS and screwy fucntionality. Last point, if Linux distros FLY on older machines, I wonder how it would do on machines that are packed with power.
Now for the question -- since I have Mint Victoria on my MAC, do I need to install LMDV 6 fresh or will it just upgrade on top of the Mint Victoria that is on the system?
LMDE is not compatible with the regular Linux Mint so you will have to install it fresh, you should be able to backup your config files for your regular apps and carry those over if you like.
