    Also relevant, canon-wise, while not based on a real-life explorer, there is the USS Archer. It is part of the task for that was set to intercept the Scimitar in Star Trek: Nemesis. The producers have said in interviews that it was named after Jonathan Archer out of character, so there's no reason to think that it wouldn't have been named after him in-universe as well.

    "Why are there so many ships with Earth names?"
    Oh easy, look at the founding members. Primarily desert Vulcan, Forest Dominated Tellar Prime, Icy Andoria, and then there's the vast oceans of Earth. Every major power in Earth's history has had some kind of powerful navy and thus there's a strong naval tradition inherited by the UFP Starfleet via the United Earth Starfleet.
    Hell, between the US and UK alone there's probably enough unique ship names that could be recycled for starships to fill up the entire roughly 76000 unique registry numbers in canon.
    Plus a fair number of those ships are named after concepts and don't *have* to just be of Earth origin.

      It would also seem that the Earth solar system was the location of Starfleet's primary shipyards. This was likely because Earth was seen as the most neutral of the founding members of the Federation. The same reason Earth is the Federation capital and the location of Starfleet Command, even though it was the youngest, least advanced of those worlds at the time.

      The reason we have spaceships is because we had ships that people used for transportation and then we invented space transportation. On an alien World without Oceans they would have space trains (or whatever they name they used for their vehicles) In short suggesting the reason so many space vehicles have Earth names is because we had ships and aliens didn't is not a sophisticated argument.

      "They named stuff after Earth's heritage because earth had a long established heritage of ships" kind of ignores that bit where space fairing races were wandering around between stars while human navies were still figuring out how to build boats big enough to safely get around their own planet...
      Personally I assume that most ships get earth based names simply because lots of humans like to work around the shipyards, and ships typically get laid down based on serial number rather than formally named hulls. Then humans name them before anyone else thinks to.
      "My mother-in-law suggested a name that might be well suited for that new ship we started last week. A Vulcan Poet who established an important cultural garden on Andoria..." "Oh, sorry, I think the human crew working on it has already been calling it the ... 'Cleveland'? They all seem rather attached to the name, and you know how the humans get..."

      Not really. Of the Federation members, the Vulcans had been spacefaring the longest and had only returned to space in Earth's 19th century and during an era when there were far fewer powers and thus less of a need for starships capable of military operations. Remember, before the founding of the Federation 128 ships was a sizable force that required multiple nations to work together. Starfleet in later centuries mobilized thousands of ships at once.
      Combine that with the tradition of naming ships after previous ships and Earth's vast oceans and storied naval history, and you've got an utterly massive bank of ship names to pick from that unintentionally biases towards humanity on top of the names of scientists, scholars, ideals, etc. While I was joking a little earlier, there really are several thousand unique ship names at least among just a couple of major naval powers of the past century.

    I suspect many Starfleet ships are named by human convention due to the fact Sol has at least four shipyards and thus humans are the majority species working on them. “Why are there so many ships with Earth names?” Probably because the writers are lazy and it’s easier to reference Earth history than it is to make up several different histories for alien cultures and then use those names.
    Alternatively, the writers do it for the few viewers who will recognize a name and what it’s in reference to when it’s mentioned in a line.

    A USS Percy Fawcett is almost conspicuously absent, especially since historical allusions alone write at least a stand-alone episode featuring it, and a two parter if you put in a minimum effort. I’m imagining it as a Nova class.
    There was a USS Roosevelt which I’ll assume wasn’t named after Frank’s far cooler cousin because it didn’t survive The Battle of Wolf 359. Not sure what class I’d make a USS Theodore Roosevelt but I’m imagining a warship refitted for exploration or a dedicated exploration ship with major teeth, which is arguably an Intrepid class either way now that I think of it.

    i always thought the Federation used mostly Earth names for ships for three reasons:
    First: The Federation was conceived by humans, founded in the year 2161 in San Francisco, Earth.
    Second: Of the 19 canon Federation shipyards, 9 of them are Earth or Sol system -centric,
    staffed primarily by humans, designing, constructing and repairing Federation ships intended for baseline humans
    as their primary occupants i.e. atmosphere, gravity, and environmental controls all using Earth as their model.
    And finally Third: nearly all of the writers for every Trek series are native to Earth, so we have to assume at least some
    small amount of bias in their reporting.

    • @RogueTwo
      @RogueTwo 4 роки тому +12

      In-universe it's probably the result of Starfleet's primary shipyards being located in and around Earth's solar system. And why is that? you may wonder? Because, for all the distrust and animosity between the founding members of the Federation, the one thing that the Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellerites could agree upon was that they trusted Humans more then they did each other.
      All the founding members had their own space fleets, but a united defense/exploration force would have to be viewed as neutral, and as the race that brought them all together, it made sense that it would fall to humanity. This is also likely the reason why Earth is also the Federation capital. Earth was seen a neutral enough to be the place where they could all come together on common, equal ground, which wouldn't have been the case on any of the other homeworlds.
      But a side effect of all this was that since Humans were building these ships, humans were also naming them.

    • @thepoetoffall7820
      @thepoetoffall7820 4 роки тому +2

      RogueTwo I like your explanation more. It fleshes out the world nicely. The Earth was, after all, not really any type of “power” at the founding of Star Fleet, or even when the original Coalition of Planets was founded. Humans (and Earth) are incidental in a way.
      I mean, you could swap the Humans out for the Ferengi, Talaxians, or even Cardassians. And the scenario could have played out similarly. Hell, if you’re willing to consider Trill’s Beta Canon, and you’re still reading this comment so of course you are, they likely would have created a sort of federation, in the absence the Humanity....

    • @OllamhDrab
      @OllamhDrab 4 роки тому +2

      @@RogueTwo I've also always figured that because the other founding worlds had and to some degree or other still maintain their own defense and/or exploration fleets, they might well still be *using* a lot more of their traditional ship names, whereas Earth folded most of *what they had* into the UFP Starfleet. (I do also figure some of it's just the writing and there really are some more alien names out there than tend to be seen.)

    • @RogueTwo
      @RogueTwo 4 роки тому +1

      @@OllamhDrab Very possible. And it would also explain in-universe why Starfleet ships seem to be disproportionately crewed by Humans. If Vulcans, Andorians and Tellerites are still maintaining their own defense/exploration services and fleets, while Earth's Starfleet became the defense/exploration service for the entire Federation, then there would be more Humans crewing Starfleet ships. Which also suggests that Klingons maybe shouldn't have worried so much about the Federation robbing them of their culture and traditions since the founding members of the Federation were still pretty much doing their own thing. There assumptions were likely based on most often encountering Humans in their confrontations with Starfleet. Hence the: "The Federation is a homo sapiens only club!" It's not, but Starfleet would definitely seem that way to an outsider.

    I assume one reason for so many Earth names being present is because Earth was one of the founders of the Federation and the heads of Starfleet were mostly human and chose those names for ships.
    Now that I think about it, are there ships mentioned as having non-human crews? I wonder if the names we hear for those ships could be translations of the name in the native language. For example a Vulcan ship named "Challenger" could be a translation of the Vulcan name. It just has an English name for it's audiences sake.
