    One little detail I love about the Constellation class is that the impulse engines are just two Constitution class impulse engines pulled off and strapped to the side. REALLY shows how it was an attempt to bridge older, reliable technology to the modern experimental stuff, and was not keeping up.

    There is another reference to the name STARGAZER in real history.
    The Stargazer is a modified Lockheed L-1011. It first flew in 1974, but was modified in 1994 as an airborne rocket launching platform for the Pegasus rocket. It would later be used as a launch platform for the X-34 hypersonic rocket.
    The real life Stargazer got it's name from Star Trek.

    You know, I sort of get a maybe-coincidental impression of a pattern where four-nacelle ships maybe make sense as a transitional design between generations of ships, say, you often want that for an improvement on a perfected engine design or as the first version of a new one, either way they keep doing them and keep seeming to move away from them again.
    (Also that new Stargazer just looks great, whatever you think. :) )

    • @davfree9732
      @davfree9732 2 роки тому +4

      Aye. Makes sense that as you get to the end of one technology you start adding more, instead of tweaking the technology for improvements…
      However I reckon the four nacelle design was intended to give it reliability. You only need two nacelles to form a warp bubble. With four nacelles you have options to prolong its time on duty before its coils need replacing…. Either by running the nacelles at half power to spread the load, or running two on, two off.
      Even if you lose two nacelles you don’t need to call in for a tow as the ship is still warp capable. It’s a good front line ship where support is far away. Enterprise may have pushed the frontier, but it should have had an infrastructure being setup behind it to support its mission to expand explored territories. When you don’t have that support behind a ship, not to mention the class is old enough to have the bugs worked out, the Stargazer could be more independent. Only needing resupply.

    The little "extra bits" on these sort of kitbashed models, like the domes on the ventral side of the saucer, actually work really well with the Constellation's apparent troubled development - they imply that there were things added after the original design that just didn't fit properly into the original sleek lines, like how you see excessively crowded masts on late WWII ships with the addition of radars, fire control systems, and anti aircraft guns

      There's no canon reason I know of, but I like to imagine that four nacelles reduces wear-and-tear on the propulsion system, giving the vessel greater endurance and allowing it to run longer missions between visits to the drydock. This would be impractical for anything other than a long-range explorer, which is why we don't see it as often.

    • @CertifiablyIngame
      @CertifiablyIngame  2 роки тому +2

      Anything I look into would be beta canon content, but we know nacelle size played a role in warp factor before they managed to start working around that. See Mirror Trip Tucker's reaction to the Constitution class for that. Then profile mattered more, which is why ships started getting slimmer and streamlined. Could be more nacelles was just an messy way to attain higher warp factors for longer?

    Poor Constellation class. I think it was exactly what it looks like: in a time before large-scale replication, it was an attempt to squeeze more performance out of Constitution and Miranda-class tooling and subassemblies. The Excelsior, by contrast, had a ton of new tech at the time and very little carryover from the earlier ships. That would mean both retraining for crews, and a bottleneck in early production. and possibly component quality issues. The Constitution/Miranda systems, by contrast, were already in service and production for the vast bulk of the fleet, and crews knew them well. So there was almost certainly a push from the San Francisco Fleet Yards to effectively sandwich two Constitution refits together to make the Constellation class. Unfortunately, that doesn't work much better than welding two airplanes together, and it was fraught with problems, while the Excelsior quickly proved itself the much more reliable design and took over the bulk of front-line duties for Starfleet.

  • @axelhopfinger533

    What i like most about the Constellation design is the reasonably thick and roomy looking saucer section/main hull. It doesn't look streamlined but quite rugged and practical for a federation design.

    • @daveh7720
      @daveh7720 2 роки тому +1

      Streamlining doesn't make much difference in space, but it seems like a not-streamlined ship profile would cause more damage to subspace. But I guess that wasn't known to be a concern until later.
      I agree with you about the Constellation's appearance though. It just looks like a workhorse of a ship, like a space pickup truck. But does it really have six shuttlebays?

    • @axelhopfinger533
      @axelhopfinger533 2 роки тому +2

      @@daveh7720 That's my main gripe with federation ship designs: they all often look unnecessary sleek and aerodynamic at the cost of usable interior space.
      If you just make the saucer sections shaped more like a puck than a frisbee (like the Constellation), you could reduce them in size considerably while retaining and maximizing usable interior space. Which in turn benefits structural integrity. As does getting rid of the separate engineering section and connecting neck.
      The gentle slopes and relatively thin edges on most of the saucer sections are impractical in so many ways and really only serve aesthetic purposes.

    My Head Canon for 4 Nacelle design.
    Efficiency: Finer control over warp bubble allowing greater efficiency and endurance for long range flights. Assuming increasing warp factor takes a greater engine output than maintaining it similar to Newtonian inertia, once a desired warp factor is achieved 2 nacelles could be taken offline in a similar manor to modern high performance engines are setup to reduce the number of cylinders fuelled to reduce fuel consumption.
    Flexibility: Warp field can be better tuned to varied subspace conditions, allowing safer exploration of areas with adverse subspace environments. Similarly running the 4 buzzard collectors but only 2 nacelles could allow the vessel to transit areas with low concentrations of interstellar gasses.
    Redundancy: Even though given time Starfleet vessels seem to able to repair any level of damage. Thee destruction of a nacelle would be the most problematic. 4 nacelles would give the vessel the ability to still produce a warp field and return to spacedock with two nacelles destroyed or disabled (provided they are not diagonally opposite, even then one nacelle could be detached and moved to pylon with line of sight to another). If in field repairs are necessary having a ready supply of spare parts the additional nacelles represent accelerate repairs.
    Durability: Part of redundancy and flexibility. It is far less likely to for the diagonally opposite nacelles to be damaged or destroyed by mishap or enemy action, leaving the vessel still able to retreat at warp. A damaged but functional nacelle could potentially still be used at a lower output with the remaining nacelles compensating for the reduced functionality.
    Higher sustained cruise: Starship Cruise speeds are determined by the warp factor the engines can maintain without unsustainable wear on engine components. 4 nacelles = 1/2 the load per nacelle at a given warp factor to a comparable 2 nacelle design.
    Reduced transit times: Assuming the entire warp engine system is doubled as it appears to be on the constellation class. One system can maintain a perhaps slightly reduced warp factor while the other is taken offline for repairs/maintenance. Maintaining a higher average warp factor for a long transit. (ships do this).

    I always thought that more necelles made better longrange ships.
    Better fuel efficiency. More Speed at same fuel consumption. Less load on the reactor. More ability to deal with "hard suspace terrain". Even some redundancy in case one necelle is damaged or lost.

    • @marksherman6584
      @marksherman6584 2 роки тому +2

      My thought is if a nacelle or two is damaged or otherwise not working, you still have two, reducing the risk of getting stranded and/or making in-flight repairs easier to schedule.
      Two-nacelle designs appear to be superior, which I'd guess for simplicity and reliability, but those are less important compared to repairability without downtime for some mission profiles

    did the federation change the way their warp field works after introducing the variable geometry pylon design of the intrepid class to stop the damage being done to subspace?
    how does a 4 nacelle design after the intrepid class, with what looks like stationary pylons, fair in this regard?

    • @Jesse.Crenshaw
      @Jesse.Crenshaw 2 роки тому +1

      My understanding is that the variable geometry of the intrepid was a transition design to prevent damage to subspace, and that newer designs didn't need to physically move the nacelles they could just internally manipulate the shape of the warp field. Much faster acting and much less subspace damage than just moving the pylon angle.
      Think of how if you have one large electromagnet it just creates a magnetic field around it. BUT if you have a whole bunch of electromagnets you can turn some of them on or off, or even reverse the polarity of some of them, and actively change the magnetic field. Think of how a rail gun.

    I view "new" Trek like the books, it's both canon and non-canon at the same time...

    I'm not the only one that thought the Sagan class's design looks less advanced than the other ships in the fleet at this time? It looks out of place as a new design compared to say the Gagarin, Sutherland, Reliant.

    I don't regard anything from the Picard series as cannon.
