    Wasn’t the Nebula Lexington at the Battle of Sector 001? There was a Nebula class at the battle, and Lexington was mentioned over the radio (“96 dead, 22 wounded on the Lexington”). I think they were going to use this ship to show off the movie budget by blowing it up front and center.

    Interesting how for the Enterprise, the registration stayed the same, but with a letter tacked on the end, while the Lexington just gets a new one. You can tell who the favorite child is!

    • @tarn1135

      The reason given, in universe, is that the Enterprise was allowed to keep the registry number, with a letter to differentiate between the ships, in honor of the achievements and heroism by the crew of the original ship. The Enterprise wasn’t the only one to get the letter designation as Star Trek is littered with them really.

    Got a chance to talk to a guy who was a Gunner on the USS Lexington at the battle of the Coral Sea. Has to be one of the most amazing and laid-back person I’ve ever met. During the battle of the Coral Sea his gun area took a hit and he was blown into the water. He got picked up by a destroyer, which the destroyer crew loved because when they transferred him back the USS Lexington, the Lex would give them 36 gallons of Ice Cream in return. Unfortunately, the Lexington was sunk before they could return him. He spent the rest of the War as a Navy Gun Trainer in California.

    About 10 years ago I met an old Marine. As is my custom I stuck my hand out and said Semper Fi. As we chatted I noticed a patch on his jacket. "Gun Director USS Lexington " I pointed at his patch and asked which one? Looked me dead in the eye and said both. He survived CV-2, and he was a Plank Owner on CV-16. He asked when I was in the Marines, I told him I couldn't claim that title. I was a Corpsman, with the Marines. He got quiet and mentioned the Doc that saved his life on CV-2. That was a humbling experience for me.

    When the original Lexington aircraft carrier CVV-2, the "Lady Lex", was hit at the Battle of the Coral Sea, she began to list. The repair crews swung into action, but as the list continued to increase, or at least not appreciably decrease, it became apparent to the crew that they would have to abandon ship. Since they were no longer under fire they had plenty of time to prepare, and affected one of the most orderly, well-executed abandonments in naval history. The crew was so well-organized, and had so much advanced notice that they would have to abandon ship, that as they sat on deck awaiting the inevitable the cooks first passed spoons down the lines of undressed men. Once the spoons had been distributed, the cooks then raided the ship's freezers for all the ice cream they had stored, and sent the containers down the lines of the now spoon-equipped sailors, who (the story goes) did not abandon the ship until all the supplies of ice cream had been, um, denied to the enemy. And to neaby fish with a sweet tooth, I suppose. In any case, the sailors made sure that if they were going to lose their ship, at the very least her ice cream would not be wasted. Priorities, you know?

      Additionally, the USS Jenolan that the Enterprise-D rescued Scotty from was stated to be Sydney class. Given what we know of the nomenclature of Starfleet ship classes, that means that there was a USS Sydney somewhere. Wiki lists 5 HMAS Sydneys.

    The DS9 animation reminds me of a question I have from regular DS9 footage - has there ever been an interview or video that explores or explains the following?
    The shape/lines of DS9 are beautiful, but there are repeated images that point to the impracticality of the layout. There are three upper pylon docking stations and three lower pylon docking stations. When dealing with large ships, only one pylon out of each set of three can be used at a time - the pylons cant inwards from the outer ring diameter, the docking ports are at the ends of the pylons, and the docking ports all face inwards. It limits the space available for docking. It wasn't built as a base for capital ships, true - but it was built as a mining station and would have been dealing with large freighters some of the time.
    If it didn't occur to them in model design during series development, they could have written it in during wartime - retrofit the pylons to have outward-facing docking stations!

    • @huntrovherobrin
      @huntrovherobrin 4 роки тому

      They were probably capable of managing multiple Cardassian ships at once, just not multiple ships of other factions.
      Then again, this is just me attempting to find a rational explanation behind a Star Trek design.

    • @carlbruschnigjr1757
      @carlbruschnigjr1757 4 роки тому

      They probably stage the loads in the pylons arms, then when the ship docks, they have some kind of conveyor moving the material into the holds. As the ship leaves, this opens up the next pylon for a ship to dock at, and the now empty pylon can be reloaded.
      Or, more likely, it's a YATI.

    Lexington. Hmm. In my head. An Akira. Then a Vesta. Both stout fiery classes. Placed on patrol duty but were scrappy. The ships were the first call to arms in a fleet engagement and the last to leave. Albiet in pieces if needs be. The refitted Defiant class was postulated as "Lexington" however the Vesta class pipped the post. The current Lexington is the Lithe Vesta class. It serves officially as part of task force "Omega" however, it's flexible mission proflile allows it missions outside military manouevers due to it's slipstream it can use in limited capacity

    There was no USS Lexington before 1901, because USS wasn't used until then. The first you mention was a Continental Navy vessel before there was a US Navy or a USS.

      The reuse of a registry is by UFP presidential order as a symbol of accomplishment. The names however are reused all the time.

    •  4 роки тому

      In TOS, the number on hull of ship was NCC-1709, not 1703. The 1703 was the USS Hood.
