No thanks. I don’t need bings and beeps telling me my door is open, telling me I’m not wearing my seatbelt. Or freaking lane assist... I know how to stay between the lines. I passed colouring-in in kindergarten. And when something goes... I don’t want to break out a laptop. I’m happy using screwdrivers and sockets to fix something.

The beetle I have at the moment I got from a guy who had purchased it for his daughter. She just couldn't get the hang of shifting so he sold it. Once I go into it, found that $2 bushing on the shifter was gone and wrong clutch cable that was maxed out. Once I fixed those she shifts easy. I texted the guy it wasn't his daughters fault. I so want to bring it back and let her try it again. They are about 2 1/2 hours away, but I think having her be able to do it would make it worth it.

Yeah I don't think that would be a good idea either. She might be mad that it was such an easy fix you know what I mean?

Here in the UK, the vast majority of new drivers learn to drive using a manual transmission, those that struggle to drive (perhaps they shouldn't be driving at all?) learn in an automatic! Passing the driving test with a manual transmission means you can drive any car, pass in an automatic means you can only drive automatics (unless you take another test in a manual).
About 90% of new cars sold in UK are manual transmission, automatics are seen as being less desireable, and of course, a manual transmission is MUCH MORE FUN to drive!
Great seeing a novice experience the joys of a manual transmission, let's hope Avery is a convert to the cause! Great filming as always!

Virtually no manual transmission cars are even offered for sale in the USA. 5% is my estimation and the majority are high performance models not suitable for new drivers. Entry level cars like the Honda Fit/Jazz (which I own) and Ford Fiesta are being discontinued in this market. Even basic light trucks, like the Toyota Tacoma/Hilux are automatic only, and no diesel here.

I tried to drive my dad's '74 Chevy pickup when I turned 16. Utter failure! Then, one night near my 18th birthday I had this vivid dream of me driving it-- so the next day, I begged him to let me try again. I hopped in, fired it up, and I was shifting like a pro, no looking back. He kept asking me where I'd practiced! 😂😂😄😄 Since then, it's been smooth sailing!

I don't know how I missed this one the first time around but I'm glad I found it. So much fun to watch. Jake covered all the bases, and Avery was as sure as sure can be - a perfect student, and fun to watch. Her enthusiasm was contagious. My first attempt, in 1977, at learning to drive a manual transmission was with my Dad in his '71 Beetle. I knew I could do it, but it didn't go well. Shortly after that I bought a '71 Corolla 1200 with a 4-speed from our neighbor across the street and taught myself how to drive it in one session. Most of my cars since then have been MTs.

'61 ragtop beetle arrives today and I'm pretty excited.

Great to see the New Gen take control of driving a "Real" car. Congrats Avery! You are hooked now! You will have a complete understanding of our (V-dub folks) passion for the classic VW; the feel, the smell, the drive, the uncertainty if it will stall on you without warning. The stories are never ending, like for example...my first manual gearbox lesson. It was in a 1982 Honda Prelude. Burned the clutch on my brother's girlfriend's new car. This way I had the basics down when I drove brother's 1967 VW Squareback. Great experience with many VW stories!
If you drive to SoCal in a classic VW, then you can say with more confidence, "Yes, I can drive a stick". Remember, "It's not a car, it's a Classic Volkswagen".

When I was about 18, I wanted to buy a Chevy Luv truck my High School English teacher was selling. It was an old farm truck, but it was in great shape still. I asked if I could drive it and she asked "Can you drive a stick shift?" I lied and said I could, but didn't even know how to start the thing (I didn't push the clutch in). She figured out I was fibbing, but was sweet enough to sit in the truck with me while I learned how to drive it...very awkwardly. I didn't end up buying the truck, though. My folks vetoed that plan. I love the feeling of control when driving a stick shift....I've not owned one in a while. My last one was an 80 model Chevy truck with a "three on the tree" but I would love to get another stick shift vehicle.

I didn't see you teach her reverse , which I think is the hardest gear to shift into for beginners . You've probably done that eventually. I learned to drive a stick in my dad's 71 VW Squareback . It came naturally to me , but my brother had a hard time with it. I later had a 74 VW camper with the manual stick. It was fun. Also, when you are wanting to stop from higher speed, you can let the engine and transmission slow you down a few seconds before putting your foot on the clutch and brake. Shifting to a lower gear when stopping helps if you have enough time. It saves your brakes.

Learned to drive a stick on my first VW - a 1968 Type III Squareback. That was a great car! In fact I ended up owning two of them - one on the east coast and one on the west coast.

I learned to drive stick on a '77 Bus and a '68 Corvair. It was a strange route to reverse in the bus, but it is still inbedded in my mind. I really miss those 2 cars. Was fortunate to drive them on a regular basis.

Great stuff.Tom and Ray Magliozzi, the click and clack brothers of "Car Talk" had a great teaching technique: press the clutch, put in first gear, and without accelerating, just teach how to release the clutch, that is perfect to teach someone to learn about the sensitivity of the clutch, without the use of the accelerator, since most cars should move just on idle speed once the clutch is fully out. Then take care of the rest will be easy. Having said all of that Avery had no problem balancing both pedals.

Learned how to drive a stick in my dad’s 1973 Dodge pickup, 318 4 speed with the “granny” first gear, when I was about 13 years old (1976). The first vehicle I bought after getting my drivers license was a 1941 Chevy pickup, 4 speed un-synchronized , learned all about double clutching! Those where the days!

got a job when I was 17 driving a Bomb Pop jeep (ice cream). Its a old jeep with a freezer hanging out of the back. I had learned on a automatic so I think it was easier. My high school buddys family had only sticks. He had to learn to operate the clutch before he could take it out of the driveway. So every night after school we would go to his house, roll the big Ford station wagon down the driveway take off and stop it before he hit the garage door. That was some wild rides and how he never hit the garage door I'll never know :-)

I taught my daughter, and my son to drive stick in a custom '73 Beetle that me and my daughter built together. It was a lot more difficult that Boomer, because it had a fuel injected 2110 cc with a 12.75 lb. flywheel. That engine rev'd so easily that it made taking off in first really hard for an inexperienced manual driver. It made hill holding really hard too. I ended up driving the car for a year before she could get the hang of it.
